First Expedition to the Barrowmaze

#1 Post by Distorted Humor »

The party travels, it about half a day from the village, and soon you find the path, you see the map was correct, there is a main mount (barrow) surrounded by other barrows around it. The path leads to a main barrow.

The things that is most noticeable is the utter silence of the moor. You do not even hear a bird or a cricket, it is dead silent. and your voices carry. everyone takes a look around and some of the hirelings realize what they got themselves into.....

In the depressing silence, the party must select which Barrow to search

Caerth Cullwood speaks in a soft voice.

"This seems to be odd behavior for creatures of the heath."

Caerth takes a long look at the map.

"Looking at this map, the main barrow seems to be enticing but I think maybe going to another barrow might be wise to start. Perhaps the one labeled 1 on the map?"

Jericho concurs, "Aye, I believe the road less traveled will yield greater treasure."

Enwuld

Enwuld nods in agreement, "We may face less dangers in a smaller barrow."

You arrive at the first Barrow, and you see that it is a typical barrow with a large stone door over the front. It appears to be sealed from the outside. The good news is that it is untouched, the bad news is that you will need to figure out how to get though the door.

The door is stone with mortar...a sledgehammer and Iron spike could break though, but you don't have a sledge....

Not a sledgehammer, but I did bring a small hammer, iron spikes, a crowbar, a spade and a mining pick! All on the Pony, of course, and ready for excavation...

Looking at the gear, you quickly realize that the mining pick will have to be the main workforce, as the small hammer and the iron spike just won't do the job in the tough rock.

let me know what the party plan to break down the wall :)

Olwë Calmcacil

Olwë slings his bow over his back and picks up the mining pick with both hands. "I'll see what I can do, though slinging a pick should be more familiar to others," he says giving Cobb a friendly good-natured smile. Olwë then hefts the pick and swings at the barrier.

Odger Whitetooth

While the door is being worked with a pick, Odger searches around for any hidden mechanisms in the area.

The Sound rings over the the fields, as the pick goes to work, it is not quick work with only one pick.

CRACK CRACK CRACK as a few ravens look on, and then fly away

CRACK CRACK CRACK CRACK

after about 15-20 min , the door falls away. Light touches the insides of the this barrow for the first time in ages, you see two slabs with skeletons laying on top of them. You cannot see more till you enter the barrow.

Odger Whitetooth

Odger fishes for his flint and steel, lights his lantern, and holding it aloft, says, "no risk, no fortune," and steps into the barrow, eyes alert for any traps or danger.

Jericho cautiously follows Odger into the barrow. He stops just inside the entrance, but off to the side to allow others in, to examine the room.

The Skeletons do not move, in fact, they are quite dead, and not undead. there is a Ampora at the head, and bowls at their feet. There is ~25 gold pieces in each bowl. The artwork is vivid and untouched by time. The air is old. You are most likely the first here in many years.

Jericho advances and slowly examines the slabs the skeletons are lying on. He is looking to see if the slabs are moveable and if they might be hiding anything else. He will also look around to see if what other exits are in the room.

Caerth Cullwood will enter the barrow, and search the sarcophagi, looking for writing of any kind that might identify the occupants.

The writing is of very old language that common derives from. You cannot make much out of it, but you do recall that æðeling means minor lord, and the word is in the inscriptions.

There appears to be no exits or other ways in and out other then the now broken door.
