Y2156.12.08 The Colony (Bldg 7) [Guy, Joe and Nyota]

Y2156.12.08:morning The Colony (Bldg 7) [Guy, Joe and Nyota]

Your initial time with Sam eventually transitioned to a meeting with Mark Jensen. Mark was a large man in his mid-forties with all the earmarks of a sedentary lifestyle. He was slow and not particularly graceful in movements, but his eyes were sharp … missing nothing.

The group sat in the living area chatting informally with Mark. Guy opened the conversation with a suggestion that he might be able to offer any assistance Mark might require in obtaining components or avoiding trouble “under the present climate” . It was slightly surreal experience as the glass walls around the room became displays and filled with information about Sir Guillaume Dubois …

Guy’s entire life was laid bare upon the office walls. There were even Personnel evaluations from a decade ago displayed on the wall and photographs of him from Government surveillance.

As you talked, Mark was both interested in and impressed with Guy’s Computer skill … however it was also clear that he did not completely trust your Government and Criminal connections. So Mark ultimately sent mixed signals, both intense interest and deep mistrust.

Mark likewise briefly posted a scan of Joe Black but almost instantly dismissed him as irrelevant “hired muscle”. Joe suppressed a smile. Most of his greatest successes began with people underestimating him.

Whatever his expertise, Mark was not a poker player. When he scanned the displayed records of Doctor Nyota Elskaour Seren … including records that she had never seen from colonies in the Beau system … he leaned forward with obvious intense visible interest. “No wonder they took you away for questioning.” he said “What surprises me is that they let you go.” .
Guy roll [7] … neutral
Joe roll [5] … disinterested
Nyota roll [10] … very interested

Mark Jensen (Age 45):
Below average (2-5) DEX, END; Average (6-8) SOC; Above average (9-C) STR, INT, EDU.
Skills: Computer, Streetwise, Admin, Pistol, Vehicle (Ground)
A career Bureaucrat, Mark spent 4 terms as a Government Hacker [White Hat] and 2 terms in Corporate Cyber-security [Grey Hat] before being retired to the Colony to manage a small COMM office due to dark-web connections [Black Hat].

Guy Dubois

Guy smiles as Jensen puts files up on the display walls for all to see.
Indicating the surveillance photos only generally, he says, "I always thought that one could have been from a better angle."

He thinks to bring the discussion back a bit, if only to get some time for Nyota to gather her thoughts, "So certainly there's something we could help you obtain, or avoid . . .?"

Nyota appreciates the time. She seems to be knee deep in a conspiracy and missing lots of relevant data. Certainly not the quite Locum work she'd dreaded being about to bury herself in. More exciting but exceedingly confusing.

Joe sat quietly, letting Guy do the talking, but he is practicing some of the talents that have been awakened in his mind while he does it. He is satisfied to be underestimated and ignored while he sees if he can help Guy...silently.

Joe subtlety probes Jenson's mind to see if he can sense any sort of weaknesses he may harbor. He has used this mostly for sensing weakness in combat situations, but...in a sense...this is also a combat. A combat of wills and words, but a combat all the same. Joe will also tap at Jenson's confidence and see if he can make him less sure of himself as Guy negotiates with him.

Guy: "So certainly there's something we could help you obtain, or avoid . . .?"

Joe:
A probe for weakness reveals unusual results. Confidence in Mark’s infiltration of the Police network and perfect awareness of their location, movement and plans in advance. Yet an extreme vulnerability in the area of Medicine. You cannot explain what or how, but Mark was heavily dependent upon Dr Ellie for her MEDICAL expertise and is compensating for a vulnerability created by her loss.
Mark: "We?" he raised his eyebrows and leaned forward "An interesting choice of words." Mark leaned back, pondering for a moment. "A Hacker and a Doctor visit asking if THEY can help." a small smile crosses his face and data covers all the glass walls. "What do you make of this?"

The walls contain a random collection of data. Mathematical symbols. Chemical formula. Strings of letters and symbols. Lines of computer coding. All of it mashed together side by side in discreet and seemingly unrelated screens.

Guy can recognize some of the coding as Logic Modules for synthetic AI - core programming to enable Machine Learning and the backbone of things like modern (TL 11) Robotic Brains. Other things were Chemical equations, but they were unfamiliar to him. Some were schematic diagrams for CPU’s and Integrated Circuits, but they were not layers of wafers but designed as actual 3D lattices … some sort of advanced Crystal Electronics.

Nyota glanced past most of the Electronics, her MECHANICAL skill identifying some constructs that she suspected were nanotechnology designs - mechanical assemblers operating on a molecular level. What caught her attention was the MEDICAL data. It was like DNA sequencing and Organic Chemistry, but the molecular formulas all indicated an inorganic chemistry base. It appeared to be data on non-carbon based life - a theoretical possibility, but never actually discovered or replicated in a lab. Only Nyota had seen some similar data twice before … in Ellie’s notes and in the Ship’s AI.

Joe just stared at the complex technical data that was above his pay grade, but his “gift” allowed him to sense the fundamental shift in the room. Whatever this was, it clearly meant something to Guy and Nyota, who both rose and scanned the data on the walls. Joe could hear the air from the vent as the only sound in the room as complete silence reigned.

Mark: "So, any helpful thoughts?" he paused. "I seem to be stuck in my research."

Turning towards Nyota, "This is why people were interested when someone with your unusual skill set and background suddenly showed up. This is why they had ‘questions’ for you."

Nyota

Well, I can see why the notes were never published. Dr Ellie wasn't finished.

And she looks at the AI

Do you know if Ellie used her own synaptic system as a basis on which the substrate was modeled: Not the Biology of course but the pseudo-neuron linkages?

With the combination of Mechanic and Medical skills Nyota tries to give the impression of knowing which way is up on the pages available. Her (J-o-T) improvisation skills may be more use.

Do you have all Dr Ellie's databases and source references. I think I'll need to take this slowly to try and figure out what all this implies. I suspect that this just tells us that Tab A went into Slot B, not that the resulting item was a windmill.

Guy

Seeing that this code is an intersection of different skills, Guy, if possible, takes a moment to caucus with Nyota and Joe about what they each observed in what Jensen put up on the walls. Especially including whether it looks like Jensen withheld anything from being on the walls . . .

Joe says quietly, "I'd say Mr. Jensen is the type of person to have arranged to be listening to anything we say whether he is physically present or not. So, we might as well speak openly."

He waves at the data on the wall, "I understand only a little of what is up there, but from what I can understand and what Mr. Jensen has said, I think he could use some assistance in certain areas."

"Even before we arrived I wondered about Mr. Jensen being left alone by the Security that has descended on The Colony. I would think both the Government and the Corps would be beating down his door." Joe says with a slight smile, "The Government because it seems to think that Dr. Ellie was associated with some sort of survivalist slash terrorist group and Mark, here, has had dealing with her, and the Corporate types because of the research he is doing here...again with Dr. Ellie's assistance...might be of great interest to them."

"I can't think of any other reason Corporations would be so heavily interested in the piddling little interests of The Colony. Their interest must be Building 7 and what Mr. Jensen is doing in here. "

"So, isn't it interesting that Building 7 has been left alone?" Joe smiles again, "Looking at Mr. Jensen I can tell he feels pretty confident that this state is going to continue as well. I would like to know why he feels that way, wouldn't you?" Joe glances at Guy in particular when he says this.

"However, he does have a worry." Joe waves at the data on the wall again then looks at Dr. Nyota, "I think he is worried, very worried, about the health of his project, and I use the word health advisedly."

Turning to Mark, Joe continues to speak quietly, "Mr. Jensen, Ellie was a doctor, a Medical Doctor. It seems clear to me that you were quite dependent upon her assistance in certain areas of your project. So, we must assume that your project has a medical aspect. Since Dr. Ellie's disappearance her help has also disappeared and I think you need some help keeping your project alive...figuratively if not literally... don't you?"

"We, you see, want to keep the Security Apparatus of both the Government and Corporations out of our business. Probably for similar reasons as you, I think. Our group has other goals that might be separate from those you and Dr. Ellie were pursuing, but at this point their separation isn't really clear. Murky, at best."
Joe cocks his head to one side and continues, "Now, none of our group has the background and expertise of Dr. Ellie, but we do seem to be continuing some of her work, as best we can. It appears you are as well, as best you can."

"To me, it is quite likely that we have common cause here. Wouldn't it be better for us to join forces than to both face the chance that what you and Dr. Ellie were working on dies out?"

Y2156.12.08:afternoon The Colony (Bldg 7) [Guy, Joe and Nyota]

The meeting proved both illuminating and productive. On the subject of “security”, Mark shared that he had little personal concern from the Government or Corporations. Mark had created a “doomsday file” hidden on the Dark Web full of dirty little secrets that powerful people wanted kept secret. As long as no harm befell Mark, the file would remain asleep. If anything bad happened to Mark, then there would be nobody to reset the clock and all those secrets would become public information. That information could cause the collapse of corporations or shatter planetary alliances. So, Building 7 was probably the safest place on Beau.

Mark clarified that Ellie was the genius conducting theoretical research into non-carbon lifeforms. She had discovered that this non-carbon biology had an affinity for electronic circuitry and could be used as an overlaid film to enhance traditional massively parallel electronic architecture. Mark was exploring practical Computer Engineering applications to her theoretical work. Their early collaborations seemed to indicate a potential for a significant leap forward in both processing capacity and Synaptic networks.

Mark became excited at the prospects … “I know what the most advanced research and even theoretical predictions are working towards for TL 12 and even TL 13 Computer architectures … Ellie’s alternative inorganic bio-computing technology has the potential to leapfrog over both the experimental prototypes and the theoretical models to something even more advanced!”

Mark needed help in continuing Ellie’s work. People with extreme skills to think outside of conventional research norms and unlock the remaining mysteries to mastering this new technology. He asked if you wanted to see the working prototype?

Through the glass door was a large, but conventional server room. Guy estimated it was likely a TL 11, Model 2 Fib Starship Computer. Beyond that was another glass wall leading to a room full of bio-organic circuits that resembled those in the Starship’s AI.

As the group studied them, you observed that the synaptic patterns and DNA sequences were both significantly simpler than those on the Starship. It was as if Ellie had shared her early notes, but not her most advanced findings. Nyota concluded that Marc must have started with a small sample and attempted to synthesize something similar to the alien lifeform … like a bad engineered cloned tissue compared to a complete living organism.

What was clear is that Mark and Ellie were working towards divergent goals. Not conflicting, just very different.

Mark wanted to master a technology to build a new generation of computers better than anything that existed or would exist for a hundred years. Ellie wanted to understand how the inorganic life interacted with Electronic systems to help her treat her recovering patient.

Mark could be a wealth of information about actually getting the ship operational, but you had to be careful what to reveal to him and how you explained discovering that information.

It seemed, for better or worse, Mark and the group would be working together in the near future.
Mark was anxious for any information you could provide to advance the project.
Nyota roll [11]+3 = 13 … Medical success (extreme insight)
Guy roll [5]+4 = 9 … Computer success (insight)
Joe roll [6]+2 = 8 … JoT success (insight)

[Mark roll = 9 … Computer success]
Reaction roll [10] … friendly

A note on advancing this research. Each 8 hours invested in “research” gains a research roll [2d6+skill]. Apply any skill you deem appropriate (MED, ELEC, COMP, JoT). Each 12+ is a major advancement. Each 10+ is a minor advancement (2 minor advancements = 1 major advancement). The researchers do not know how many “advancements” are needed to complete the project and reach the “prototype” stage.

Guy Dubois

Since Guy doesn't know all that much about Ellie's other project, he figures he can keep from disclosing things that he doesn't even know, and rolls up his sleeves to put his computer skill to work.

The first eight hours are a bit slow going.

Moving to Day 9

You had a copy of Mark's research and agreed to work on it and search for Ellie's notes [Of course you had Ellie's notes and would probably not share them, since she had not.]
With the sun setting, the group headed back towards the Camp.
