(LFP) Languard: The Northern Holdfast (Shadowdark)

Storied Languard - capital of Ashlar and its greatest city - stands strong against Hard Bay’s turbulent, stormy waters. To the northwest across the bay lie the curse-haunted ruins of Greystone and Gloamhold’s doom-wreathed halls. Languard is a noisy, dirty, rain sodden place. Here, amid broad, muddy streets teeming with life and danger-filled alleyways, there is little that cannot be bought - for the right price.

Even in the warmer summer months there is almost always a handful of storms that can last more than
a week, the locals chalk them up to “The Old Bitch”, the goddess of storms, Serat. Winters are cold and wet, and the winter storms all but cut off the city and the duchy from the outside world. “If it isn’t raining in Languard, just wait” is a common phrase due to the year-round downpours.

Although it is Ashlar’s largest and richest settlement, living in Languard still feels like living on the frontier, and its proximity to Gloamhold throws a pall over its alleys and thoroughfares. For many Crawlers, the legendary ruin of Gloamhold draws them to Languard like moths to a flame.

I'm looking to run a Shadowdark campaign in Raging Swan Press's Duchy of Ashlar (the OSR/SN version).
  • The game system being used is Shadowdark.
    • Core or quick start for rules.
    • I have the core rules and I'm willing to help new players and those who only have the quick start.
  • Characters begin at 1st level.
  • Characters roll their stats in order, using 3d6 (If none of your stats are 12 or higher. Then reroll all 6 stats.)
  • Available character races are Human, Dwarf, Elf, Halfling, and Half-Orc.
  • Available character classes are
    • Core rules:
      • Fighter, Priest, Thief and Wizard
    • Backer Extra:
      • Bard and Ranger
    • Cursed Scroll #01
      • Warlock and Witch
  • Starting level 1 hit points will be the maximum for your class plus your CON modifier. At level 2 onwards you will roll your class hit die.
  • Each character will start with 1 rumor. Roll 2d6+Cha, a result of 9 or higher means that you have heard a 2nd rumor.
In this game you will be “Crawlers”, desperate or foolhardy rogues delving into ancient ruins in pursuit of wealth, power and forgotten knowledge. Below are some of the accepted facts of being a Crawler and how the game world works:
  • The deep dark of Gloamhold – None of the player races have dark vision. Torches only last 1 hour due to the unnatural darkness that envelops Gloamhold.
  • Your enemies want you dead – Exploring the ancient precincts, crypts, and chambers of the most dangerous place in the known world is not for the faint hearted. Encounters will not be balanced for your party level or size, but they will never be unfair. Retreat is often an option.
  • Don’t get too attached – Your characters are likely to die unless they are lucky, skillful, or smartly played. Don’t worry too much. New characters are quick to roll up and you can be back in the game very quickly. With that in mind it’s probably best to limit any background for new characters to a paragraph or two at most.
  • The more the merrier – If the party is shorthanded (less than 5-6 bodies) then add some hirelings to the group. Languard has no shortage of brave and desperate souls who will accompany you for some coin.
  • Motivation – Your character should be motivated by fame, riches, desperation, lost knowledge, or a passion for exploration of the unknown. Nobody else would dare the journey across Hard Bay to Gloamhold.
  • XP – This is earned through treasure gained or boons acquired while crawling, not necessarily through defeating enemies. More XP is awarded according to how rare or meaningful the treasure or boon is. Acquiring a boon could be learning an important secret, receiving a great blessing, or taking a meaningful oath. In short, this is any revelation which significantly impacts the character and the way they see/interact with the game world.

Please do not hesitate to ask questions.

Interested!!
Count me in if possible.
Can we just use Shadowdarklings? I am ok with you rolling a pregen after I choose the class :)

If you mean the website (https://shadowdarklings.net/), of course. I have no problem with that.

Nice. I like the randomness of it.

This looks interesting. I started in AD&D 2ED and has a similar feel though the rules seem more basic which isn't bad. Needless to say I haven't played this before but may have read some about it. The torch mechanic seems vaguely familiar.

I tried out shadowdarklings and made a good priest then when I went to create an account to save it, it disappeared.

If you run this and will have me do you want rolls on here or shadowdarklings?

Thank you

I will take either. I am a firm believer this is a game and cheating the die rolls only hurts yourself.

I am interested. I have the Shadowdark rules and played in 1 game on here. I am fine with a pregen.

Sounds like a good time.
I have the rulebook (unopened) so please add me to the player list ;)
And I'm fine with a pre-gen or rolling up a character.

Count me in if there is still room. I have the Quickstart rules and am already playing in one other Shadowdark game.

I don't have any pregens except the couple which came with the Kickstarter so I would prefer everyone create their own characters. You can roll here or use the shadowdarklings site. I am ok with either.

I'm playing a Human Warlock named Nolthar.
Working on the character sheet now. The website is pretty cool.

So we have a priest, warlock and fighter so far. I will see if I can make a thief when I have some time.

Looks like we have a nicely rounded group. I will give Rex a little more time to get his character ready and take in any more players that may be interested. I would like to get the game going as early next week as possible.

That sounds good to me. I hope Rex can make his thief. I was trying to make a thief and ended up with a fighter. :)

I keep getting "Too Many Requests" errors.
