Hiyas everyone

#1 Post by GoblinTown »

Hiyas everyone.

I began gaming ages ago as a little tyke when a classmate of mine began telling me stories of the marvelous adventures that he and his big brothers were having, exploring caverns and dungeons, slaying monsters I had never heard of or imagined, and finding treasure and amazing magical items. I remember sitting on his front stairs one day after school and looking through the Monster Manual for the 1st time and being completely blown away. I HAD to play this new game!

For my birthday that year, my Father asked me what I wanted. I took him to the store and pointed out the Moldvay Basic Set. He picked it up, looked at it and said, "You sure you want this? Looks kind of complicated..." I was never more sure of anything in my life. He picked it up for me and shortly after, my classmate ran the Caves of Chaos for me. Things were never the same since.

Over the next 20 years I played and ran almost every flavor of D&D/AD&D up through 3.0 and lots of other systems including Call of Cthulhu, a number of Palladium titles, Deadlands, Castles & Crusades and a number of others whenever I had the time and people available. My favorite throughout the years has always been 1st edition.

A little over 10 years ago, fate saw fit to remove me from the gaming table. I play lots of games online but have not had a good "tabletop rpg" online in about as long.

I'm hoping to rectify that here.

The old, well-worn tomes call to me.
Should anyone by chance be starting an old-ed D&D game atm/soon, please drop me a line, I'd be happy to get my feet wet again.

Welcome GoblinTown!
This is a game about killing things and taking their stuff so you can become more powerful in order to kill bigger things and take even better stuff.

Scott308: ...everyone should be reminded of just how wonderful the people they play games with here can be in real life.
Leitz: Quality and quantity wise, I think US is the best I've seen.
Paladin: I can promise terror, glory, and riches...or a quick and brutal death.
Inferno: Come on! That's was Vicar's Head, a completely different doomed village!
Rex: I can move to the wait list to let someone else into the game.

Welcome, GoblinTown.

I've been itching to play a B/X or BECMI game of late as well, so I would think it's only a matter of time before a new game gets started. In the meantime, you should feel free to add yourself to the waiting list for the In Search of Adventure game currently being run by thirdkingdom. I added myself to the waiting list a few days ago, but would gladly let you cut in line in front of me seeing as how I'm already actively involved in several other games.

If you haven't already read it, you might find this thread useful while you're waiting for a game: So you want to play in a game on The Unseen Servant?

- Dave

P.S. Good to see another player from Illinois.

Hey GoblinTown, I think Distorted Humor is looking for players in his game. The looking for thread is here: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=589

and the game is here, if you want to take a peek: viewforum.php?f=42

That's a great introduction, GoblinTown, and is very similar to how I got into the game.

Welcome to the forums, and I hope you find a good game quickly. As you've already found out, there are many around here who are very helpful and friendly.

Thank you very much for the warm, and helpful, welcome everyone. I appreciate it, you guys seem like a friendly bunch...unless you're poor Dave.

I am currently checking out the FAQ page. Quite a few useful tools here, very nice.

Thank you for the leads, I will be checking those out as soon as I can as well.

I was wondering, when you sign up for someone's wait list, do you/are you expected to keep track of what is going on in their game, or do you tend to wait to see if you hear something back and then work out getting worked into the game? The former would seem to make it easier to integrate, but the latter seems more practical if you have a number of requests out and would make more sense rp'ing wise, unless you are taking over an npc/missing pc.

I just moved back to the south suburbs of Chicago after a long stay in Indiana. It's nice to be back. I did almost all of my previous gaming in Chicago.

You would be expected to have at least a general idea of what is going on in the game, I'd imagine. So stay caught up or catch up if your number is called - pick your poison.

Just to clarify, Dave is the one from IL.

Ron is over on the East coast.

Greetings...

I have taken over at least 3 AOL PCs, and agree that waiting to hear is easier. Unless there was a game requiring 3-4 posts a day, you would have plenty of time to catch up. Or do like I did the last one, and just ask for a recap. Chances are, you will easily have a week to read up on the history before your new PC is in a position of making a decision requiring knowledge of the game to date.

But, if you did sign up for a particular waiting list, it wouldnt hurt to read the background and skim the action thread occasionally.

Again, welcome.

Oops. Not quite sure how I messed up the quote that badly. That's what I get for posting sleepy. That was meant to be from Dave's post.

Thank you guys for the input, and for the line cut Dave, much appreciated.

Glad to help! It's great to see the increased popularity of this website, and it makes sense to get the new players involved as quickly as possible. Hopefully an opportunity will present itself soon.

You've been given great advice so far, GoblinTown. Just keep checking the boards - replacement players are needed from time to time. And waiting lists are a good thing.

And welcome to the forums - it's a great place with some mighty fine folks!

Hey GT, two things:

1. You might want to check here: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=1220 if you aren't too much against clones of the classic D&D game;

2. Thanks for the never ending goblins singing "yo ho my lads" in my head!

;)

I agree HedgeKnight, lots of great advice, and I appreciate it.

For Ron:
Feel free to join in the chorus, all are welcome in Goblin Town

Thank you for the heads up on the game. I sent him a message last night about another lead and he has mentioned this game. I requested to join in the game today, hopefully I will be able to get in. I was hoping for either a 1st ed or basic D&D type game so I think this would suit me quite well.

Edit: Just got a note saying I can play in it :D
