(005B) Zombies!

Zombies Turn 1

Suddenly, you see a figure emerging from the open doorway to the left side of the inner graveyard. It is quickly followed by 2 more figures. More may be still inside...

The lead figure is a hulking orc in ragged clothing carrying a burned out torch up like he is lighting the way along the path. His eyes are vacant and staring and he has no expression on his face like he is in a trance. His movement is slow and ponderous as he/it moves down the path of beaten grass toward you!

The two figures behind him are just as he is except each is carrying what look like spears over their shoulders.

None appear to be giving any of you a single thought. Right now, it is like they don't even see you even though you are standing right in front of them on the path. All continue to walk forward toward you down the path toward the central mausoleum.

Darian holds up his hands like he is gong to cast a spell and thinks better of it and dragging Kazan Good boy, Come, Guard.' moves 'east' 3 blocks and one 'north' by the corner of the building, holding a dart.

"I think they are automatons, smarter might be inside. How do you want to handle this?

Point of rules/character versus player knowledge. It's been a LONG time since I faced zombies in a D&D game, before the current Zombie revival, in fact; and my character in that game was a cleric, so I was just casting Turn Undead. Are they killed with headshots or not?

OOC: What you know about...

Zombies!
  • Undead
  • generally slow moving
  • take regular damage but hard to "kill"
  • do low damage with slam attacks (occasionally will use weapons, but only those already in hand)
  • turn away when "turned" rather than take damage (at this level)
  • given a task when "raised" that they will steadfastly continue unless attacked at which point they will "defend themselves" then go back to the task they were given.

Skeletons
  • Undead
  • fast moving
  • take regular damage from blunt/bludgeoning weapons (maces/axes/clubs/etc)
  • take half damage from piercing/slashing weapons (swords/arrows/bolts/etc)
  • generally, low hit points
  • use weapons: Swords, axes, bows, etc. at regular weapon damage
  • turn away when "turned" rather than take damage (at this level)
  • given a task when "raised", typically to guard an area, object, person or group



BTW, I'm going to wait a bit because Magdal, Callista and Valerian (although Bruce asked a question) haven't posted a reaction to the appearance of the zombies (if that is what they are...muhahaha)

Magdal had never seen such creatures before but follows the actions of the others and moves out of their path, shivering a bit as she does.

As usual, it's very difficult to figure out what Callista is actually feeling when she sees the walking dead. However, noticing that they don't seem to be paying the living beings that she cares about any mind, she simply steps out of their way for now. However, she watches them very closely, ready to step in if they should turn hostile.

Agreeing with Valerin, though not stating it aloud, Magdal waits for the dead to pass and then slowly begins to follow in their wake.

As the Zombies get close you see that what you first thought were spears are actually shovels. Shovels?

As you turn to follow the Zombies, you hear a clattering sound from behind, and turning see two more of the Zombie creatures emerging from the dark doorway and something else...

The clattering of bone and metal reach you as three skeletal monsters skitter out of the doorway to join the Zombies. These new monsters are nothing but bone under rags, but where their eyes should be are red glowing lights! The skeletons are each armed with short bows and have what look like rusty short swords lodged in between their ribs.

With the shrill sound of a trumpet the skeletons raise their bows and fire them at you! The five Zombies stop in their tracks and take the shovels from over their shoulders and turn towards you. You are in for it now!

You are in combat mode and Turn 1 begins!

Darren feels a sharp pain as the arrow pierces his arm (4hp) hurting him badly! He struggles to maintain his dancing lights and succeeds, but is still reeling with pain. The other two shots fly by Des and Callista with no effect.

The Zombie we are calling 1 is right next to Eodrien and swings his shovel clumsily at her. She steps aside and the shovel swings past doing her no harm. Up close to one she can see a faint red glow in this Zombie's eyes that wasn't there before.

Everyone goes simultaneously. Tell me what you want your PC to do and I'll work it all out. If I don't hear from you, I'll make your turn for you (defensive mostly).

Des will charge skeleton #1. His friends don't need ranged attacks on them while they're in the deep end. His axe won't be the best against these monsters, but it's what he has.

And of course he fumbles. ;) Also, my character sheet shows 27 hp. I've slept since I rolled the character, but I assume it's correct. If not, I need to change it.

Two-Handed Axe to hit [1d20+3]=1+3=4 damage [1d12+1]=6+1=7

He assisted with a thrown war dart.

Caught by surprise, the Skeletons fire arrows at Darren, Des and Callista. The Zombies ready their shovels holding them like spears ready to attack.

Darren feels a sharp pain as the arrow pierces his arm (4hp) hurting him badly! He struggles to maintain his dancing lights and succeeds, but is still reeling with pain. The other two shots fly by Des and Callista with no effect.

Eodrien returns the favor of an attack on Zombie #1, slashing it with her war axe and strikes it in the shoulder (9 pt) removing it's left arm from the shoulder...but it stays up!!!

Valerin Draws his bow and aims at Zombie 1 The red eye makes for a handy target point (15) and his arrow strikes the monster in the back (4 pt) and Eodrien sees the point sticking out of its chest. The light in its eyes fades out and it crumples to the ground...dead again.

Des will charge skeleton #1. as he rushes forward both Zombie3 and Zombie2 poke at him with their shovels, but both miss! His friends don't need ranged attacks on them while they're in the deep end. His axe won't be the best against these monsters, but it's what he has. Zombie1, twisting from Eodrien's chop and Valerin's arrow strike just avoids Des' chop with his war ax as it collapses to the ground!

Pointing at zombie #2 Darren shouts, Get `Em boy sending Kazan to attack. Kazan grabs at the rotting clothing of the monster and rips a pant leg off, but does no harm. Darren's war dart buzzes past Zombie2's ear as it turns toward Des who is rushing past, missing it entirely!

Dead folk, ya just can't trust them. Magdal already carrying her sword and shield rushes forward to strike zombie #2. She weaves behind Valerin and in front of Callista to get to Zombie2. Holding up her shield she thrusts her sword toward the monster. Her blade slides off the shovel it is holding and into the monster's stomach (3pt) for some damage, but it is still up and is prepared to return her attack!

OOC: Bob hasn't replied, so Calista get's NPCed this turn! She is a cleric, so turn undead seems like a thing to do, so....

Callista holds up her holy symbol and commands the undead to "Be GONE!" in a loud voice. Immediately two of the Skeletons (s1, s2) and one of the Zombies (z4) turn and flee from her going as far away as they can! Unfortunately, the rest remain to fight you seeming to throw off the powerful command from Callista.

Skeleton 3, draws its bow and shoots off an arrow at Callista, but it misses, whizzing past her and thunking into a tree trunk across the inner courtyard.

Zombie 5 has more luck, though, as it moves forward toward Callista thrusting its shovel, like a spear into her side (4 pt) penetrating her armor.

Both Zombie3 and Zombie2 thrust at Magdal! She blocks one thrust with her shield and parries the other with her sword and takes no damage. The Zombies appear sluggish and slow.

Frank plunges the end of the torch he is holding into the ground to provide light and pulls out his bow. He fires at Skeleton 3, but misses! He curses and looks around to make sure no other monsters are coming at you from behind, then turns back drawing another arrow to fire next turn.
