II. The Hole in the Oak

#1 Post by dmw71 »

The Hole in the Oak
As the two parties -- Buzar, Holliss, Rawani, Arbal, Haelan, and Ealga, and Zan -- meet, the conversation, and attention, is drawn to the "hole."

At the base of this massive oak tree, somewhat concealed amongst the roots, is a three-foot-wide hole.

A very compelling hole.

One that appears to lead into, or maybe under this majestic oak tree.

---

Note: For now, I have added Ealga and Zan to the end of the marching order. Please feel free to discuss as a group (maybe in the Logistics topic?) and decide upon a new order, if necessary.

The Hole in the Oak

“Dunno ‘bout ever one of youse, but I’m fixing to go down into this ‘ere hole," Ealga growls with a sneer. "Can’t abide all this standing and whutnot under all this open sky."

Zan, who's most familiar with the brazen dwarf, searches through his pack until he locates his lantern, which he proceeds to light.

The others -- those from the original adventuring party -- perhaps still dazed from their strange new circumstances, or perhaps still not fully trusting of these two new prospective mates, stand silently.

"Bah!" Ealga grunts, seemingly not caring whether the others join her and Zan or not.

She returns to all fours and completes clearing the roots away from the hole, fully exposing it.

Peering into the hole reveals what appears to be a shaft of some kind leading down at a gradual angle, ending after maybe 20-feet at which point it opens into a new area with a sandy floor.

There are plenty of natural tree roots from the ancient tree overhead to form a natural ladder down the sides of this shaft.

"So who ‘ere is coming wi’ us?” Ealga challenges the rest.

Note: For now, I've moved Ealga and Zan into the first two spots in the marching order, but these, again, can be rearranged as needed.

Ealga snorts derisively, ”Least one o’ youse gets it. Get that lantern lit, Stick? Ach, good. Then let’s go.”. The dwarf then crouches and carefully makes her way down the gradual incline, taking time to search for booby traps one might leave in a hole such as this one.

Bottom of the Shaft
Those that descend the shaft are eventually deposited into the expected sandy floor, which is littered with a jumble of boot-prints... and what appear to be hoof-prints.

The Earthen walls in this mostly circular chamber -- with a diameter of roughly 10-feet -- are riddled with roots of all sizes.

A path, maybe 5-feet wide, continues in the same direction of your descent, running for roughly 20-feet before ending at a T-intersection, with branches running off in either direction.

Zan

Zan joins the others, holding his lantern aloft. He spots a suitable position inline with the others just in front of Rawani where his light may provide help to the fore and rear. But before they move forward, he takes a closer inspection of the peculiar tracks in the earth. "Peculiar these hoof marks!"

Ealga

Ach, feels good t’ be under the surface again. Now what do we have ‘ere?” the dwarf says, kneeling down to trace both a foot and hoof print.

Since they are boot prints, can Ealga glean anything as to what wore the boots by size, shape, weight? Same with the hoofs?

Also, with the dwarven knowledge of underground construction, are there any clues she might pick up? Is the floor level or inclining down? Are there tool marks in the exposed stone/rock in walls? Or did something bore the tunnel?

Haelan will join the others in print analysis. Can he tell if the prints belong to something walking on 2 or 4 legs? "I doubt any pack animals could be carried down here, so probably not a mule."

Prints
"Ach, feels good t’ be under the surface again," Ealga proclaims. "Now what do we have ‘ere?” the dwarf says, kneeling down to inspect the various prints left behind in the sand.

"I doubt any pack animals could be carried down here, so probably not a mule." Haelan theorizes of the animal tracks, which present two slightly curved hoofed toes that come to a point on one end, and are generally two to three inches in length.

Not all, but a few of the prints also appear to possess small circular shapes just behind the rounded edge of the main print; possibly representing an extra set of vestigial toes.

"Peculiar," Zan agrees.

Eagla, knowing her companion has the necessary supplies, asks Zan to make a quick sketch of the print appearances. While not his specialty, the mage sets down his own lantern and begins to fetch his cartography supplies from his pack.

Rawani ignites her lantern as a secondary light source.

It takes but a few minutes for the simple sketch to be completed:

Hoof Print.jpg
Hoof Print.jpg (19.38 KiB) Viewed 1332 times

While the artist was at work, Ealga switches her attention to the underground area itself. Its construction or formation appears natural, but something about it just doesn't make sense -- which fits with her impression of the new, dreamlike realm she and Zan -- and the original adventuring group -- now find themselves in. With the continuation of the tunnel leading forward, at a very slight decline, the brutish dwarf suspects this hole has led them into a dungeon -- or maybe a lair -- of sorts.

In her examinations, however --

Message in the Roots

Ealga notices, carved into a large root near the floor just outside the entrance, the following writing:

NOLLY’S KINGDOM

The name doesn't register with anyone.

Tunnel

Buzar, continuing in his role as a scout, aided by his keen ability to see underground, distances himself from the lantern light to explore a bit of the tunnel leading away from the current area.

Both forms of prints -- boot and hoof -- continue off in this direction.

The passage feels more cramped than the entry area as it narrows to maybe 5-feet across and the ceiling dips to a height of maybe 6-feet.

The walls appear to be mostly formed from earth and roots, and are covered with moss... crawling with worms.

A distant rushing sound is heard -- with the source likely being either wind or water.

Junction

Pressing forward to the intersection, the half-orc is able to determine that the rushing sound he hears is coming from the passage to his left.

To the right, it appears as if the passage is at least partially blocked by an overgrown section of roots. Beyond which, however, an inviting faint green glow is detected.

Zan

Zan hastily completes his documentation and takes his place in line, holding aloft his lantern. “My curiosity begs first to explore the greenish light yonder to the right,” he whispers to the others.
