ECHOES FROM HOTH: Episode One: Fire on the Ice

#1 Post by max_vale »

Sector 31; East Ridge of Echo Base; Planet Hoth

It had been three long, bloody years since the Rebel Alliance had won its first major victory at the Battle of Yavin. Now, the Empire was in the process of hammering the upstart revolutionaries across the galaxy. The Alliance high command had fallen back to a remote, frigid ice-ball of a planet named Hoth; and built a base carved out of the frozen rock named 'Echo'. For over a year, successful operations had been launched out of this site; but now, the Empire had found it and a desperate battle had to be waged to give the high command and most of the base's personnel time to try and flee for safety in the dozen Gallofree Yards Medium Transports before the Empire's assault force knocked out the Shield Generator and the Fleet could destroy the base from orbit or land attack shuttles to cut-thru and capture the leadership rapidly.....

Sector 31 on the rocky East Ridge of Echo Base was very thinly defended. The steep rise up to the single tunnel entrance to the base on this side made it unlikely that the Empire would make much of an effort to approach Echo base from this direction and therefore the Alliance had not allocated much in the way of forces to protect it. Sure enough as the battle began....almost all of the Imperial assault force was mustered on the North Ridge....but a smaller force did indeed make its way around on a flanking march to face the Rebel troops huddling in the trench dug in the top of the Ridge; just in front of the tunnel entrance and supported by a single Golan Arms DF-9 Laser Turret Tower, a single Atgar 1.4 FD Laser Cannon; a Single E-Webb Heavy Repeat Blaster mounted on a tripod situated in the trench and a squad of a dozen Rebel Troopers (in addition to the half-dozen operators of the DF-9, Atgar Laser Cannon and E-Webb...2 each) armed with Blastech A-280 Blaster Rifles and a very experience team of half-a-dozen Rebel Intel Operatives who had found themselves in the wrong place, at the wrong time, in between missions....

Image

Professor Clark Jones shivered in the trench as he used a hand-held monocular (telescope) lent to him by his long time Team-mate Jackson Crodowski and he in the distance he saw the Imperial force come into sight at the bottom of the long, steep hill. He called out to everyone near by; "Okay people....they're here! Looks like a single AT-AT; two AT-STs and yep....the AT-AT is kneeling down....ramp lowering....out comes the 40 man Snowtrooper platoon. Cal, Jackson....you got that Speeder working yet?" he asked into his commlink....

Jackson Crodowksi and Cahal 'Cal' Tak Dornan had been feverishly working on a T-47 'Snowspeeder' that the Rebel repair teams had despaired of ever being able to get it off the ground in the freezing temperatures of Hoth and abandoned it in the Hangar Bay when the rest of the Snowspeeders had taken off to go meet the main group of Imperial Walkes on the North Ridge a short while ago. While Jackson was SURE he had not managed to do his best work on the troublesome machine; he WAS sure the T-47 would indeed fly.....for a short time anyway....

With Cal in the front seat flying the snowspeeder and manning its forward twin laser cannons, Jackson sat in the back seat with a power-harpoon launcher and the sensors controls in front of him. "Yeah Clark, we've got it flying...we'll be over your position in just a minute....sounds like things are about to get hot out there, watch yourselves!".....

A new member to the Rebel Intel team; the albino Wookie Kitkatarra, bellowed about the cold again and adjusted her satchel holding several Medpacs as she nervously clutched her Blaster Carbine and watched the Imperial machines start to slowly make their way up the hill. Nearby, she new Professor Clark and the strange human male named Vale Starcloud were the only ones who could fully understand her language....and sure enough, Vale smiled over at her and said; "Yeah, I wouldn't mind just letting those jerks have this frozen ice-ball either....but I guess we gotta make sure all the people in the base have a chance to get out first"; the earnest young Jedi Student answered the snow-white Wookie....

Shivering in his layers of cold-protection gear; the last member of the Intel Team; the reptillian Barabel Zuul Ksska opened his fanged mouth and chattered out; "Yesss, let ussss blassst these Imperial foolssss and leave thissss place"....as he clutched the various weapons of his arsenal closely, ready and eager to use them.....

Each of the Rebel Intel team members had been issued a single Magnetic 'Dual-Purpose' Grenade....it could be armed and thrown like any other anti-personnel grenade; or a switch could be activated to power-on the magnets and it could then be armed and hurled against any metallic vehicle and if it 'stuck'; it would deliver a powerful charge to the vehicle itself. Of course, the down-side was that one had to be fairly close to said vehicle to try and make the throw to 'stick it'....

Professor Clark watched as the last of the 40 snowtroopers dismounted from the AT-AT and it lurched to its feet and the entire Imperial force fanned out and began to climb the long, steep hill. Behind him, the Laser Tower and the Laser Cannon started to take ranging shots and the hum of the Snowspeeder's engines assaulted their ears as it flew overhead of the trench carrying Cal and Jackson in it as the battle began....

The 2 AT-STs quickly surged to the front of the Imperial force and split wide apart, both turning their cannons up and firing at the incoming Snowspeeder.....

Behind them, the 40 Imperial Snowtroopers split into 5 eight-man squads and spread out; still at too far a range for any Blaster Rifles....and probably even the E-Webb Repeat blaster.....whose crew was hoping to wait until they could pour in good fire at the enemy before announcing their existence....

Finally, the Imperial AT-AT was at the rear, the big twin Laser Cannons under its 'chin'; opening up and raising big heaps of snow and rock from the ground in short-lived explosions as they landed a few dozen meters short of the Alliance trench lines....

*Right now, Cal and Jackson are in a T-47 (stats coming up shortly....but basically the pilot flies and fires the twin laser cannons and can operate the sensors and the comm in a reduced mannor...and the gunner/systems operator sits in the back and can fire the rear power-harpoon gun and operate the sensors and comms at full capacity)....the AT-STs are currently at Medium Range (Difficulty 15 to hit) if you want to maintain this range....the Ground Troops are at Long Range and the AT-ATs are at a range too great for the Snowspeeder's cannons, but its big chin lasers can probably reach the Snowspeeder...but it'd be an awfully lucky hit).....you guys can easily close the range this turn....attempt to evade fire....shoot at one or more targets...etc.

**The guys in the trench....everybody BESIDES Cal and Jackson....are too far away yet to be able to hit anything with any of the weapons they are currently carrying.....and the plan, like in the Movie Empire Strikes Back...is basically to buy time for people to get out.

***The Outrunner is in the hangar that the tunnel behind you guys leads too

Zuul

Zuul is freezing. How he was convinced to land on this iceball is anyone’s guess. He alternates between shivering and looking for warmth. “Maybe that walker will set a fire nearby. How can you manage thiss cold?”

He looks longingly at the fur of the nearby Wookiee and continues. “Yess. A fur coat would do nicely. Do you shed?”

A nearby shot forces his attention back to the fight. “Right.” Zuul waits until something is within blaster range, then targets anyone with heavy weapons. In the meantime he fires in the general direction, trying to gain warmth from the blaster barrel.

Kitkatarra

The white Wookie stalked up and down the trench checking between the troops around her for injured and the approaching imperials, waiting impatiently for them to close within range of her blaster. Once within range she will begin to concentrate her fire on a single target until it goes down, then move to the next.

Cal

"Looks like the AT-STs got a little overexcited! They're out pretty far ahead of the troops and way out in front of the AT-ATs. I dunno how long this thing will stay airborne, but we can take a few shots at 'em, maybe take one or both out. If the ground team provides us with some fire from that Atgar tower, we may be able to split their attention and do more damage. Jackson, you fixed the lasers on this speeder, right?"

Clark remains silent for now, watching the approaching troops with the monocular and keeping an eye out for any unusual activity.

"Of course I fixed the lasers," quipped Jackson. The nerve of this newbie questioning me if I fixed the lasers... I did fix the lasers didn't I Jackson thought to himself. Guess we'll find out. Jackson adjusted the knobs on the scanners and readings making sure this tin rust bucket would stay airborne long enough to get central command out. At least he knew the Out Runner was ready to go as soon as they got down there. "Let's give those ST pilots a reminder why they shouldn't be roaming so freely out here."

Cal

"Alright. Let's take 'em out. Ground team, try to lay down some fire with that Atgar, if you can! Hang on, Jackson!"

I'd like to do the following, if possible:

Break high and starboard or high and port, get above the AT-ST's gun elevation (at least for the chin guns), and start to dive towards them from their flank, firing at the nearest walker in a strafing run, then pull up and fly overhead again, to get back above their gun elevation.

So, basically, break off to the side, fly up higher than they can aim their guns, and do a strafing run where I pull up at the end to fly over them and set up a second run from the other side.

I'm not sure how that breaks down in terms of numbers of actions and such...

Vale Starcloud runs up to the crew of the laser turret and Atgar cannon. "It looks like the snowspeeder is moving out to occupy those scout walkers. I'll keep an eye on them and let you know if they need help… In the meantime, try to use your fire to herd those troopers in. Our large cannons probably won't do much damage to them way out there, but we might be able to keep them from fanning out to much. We can't afford to get surrounded, try to direct your fire to the flanks so that they come straight up the middle."

Sector 31; East Ridge of Echo Base; Planet Hoth

The battle of Hoth intensified on the East Ridge as the lone Snowspeeder flown by Cal and Jackson dove at the AT-STs and the Imperial platoon of Snowtroopers surged forward towards the Rebel squad in the trench waiting for them at the top of the ridge....

The front wave of Imperial troops broke into three squads of 8 troops each, one split out to the right, another to the left and one in the center. Each squad had a trooper with a Light Repeat Blaster and as they closed within 300 meters, these men began firing the sling-braced weapons from the hip....most of the shots falling short or passing high over the Rebel troops' heads; but nonetheless, giving everyone something to think about...

Behind the Snowtroopers the two AT-STs each turned to a different task....One began a methodical march towards the Rebel lines with the last pair of Imperial squads filing in behind it, using it for cover while the other AT-ST began a strange, side-ways crab-walk, tilting its 'head' back and up and tracking the Rebel Snowspeeder angling towards it and firing blasts from both its front Heavy Twin blasters and its side-mounted twin light Blasters....

The Rebel Golan Arms and Atgar laser cannons opened fire as well...

The Golan Turret fired a pair of blasts at the incoming Imperial troops; one blast flying high to impact harmlessly on a snow-bank in the distance behind the Imperials while the second blast landed in the middle of the Center Imperial squad of snowtroopers, throwing a pair of troops up and into the air for a brief moment, only to land in twisted piles that didn't move again....

The Atgar Arms Turret fired a bright gold pulse of energy that shredded the twin, light blaster cannon mounted on the side of the AT-ST that was charging forward towards the Rebel position; leaving only sparking wires and dangling hunks of metal....

From the gunner's seat in the rear of the Snowspeeder, Jackson Crodowski carefully watched his scanners. He smiled a bit when he saw the damage to one of the AT-STs from the Atgar tower, but then his smile kinda fell when he noticed how quickly that same AT-ST was moving towards the Rebel lines AND how deceptively quick the AT-AT that was once in the far distance was eating up that same distance. Glancing at his displays, he noted that the Power Harpoon gun that he controlled had 3 harpoons that with the flick of a switch could be fitted with a fusion-disk and 100 meters of cable; or just fired as a ballistic weapon....

In the pilot's seat of the T-47 Snowspeeder, Cal was noting how forgiving and easy to maneuver he Snowspeeder was and thought to himself that the designers had done a good job on this craft. Then he lifted the Speeder up and banked over, while diving at the flank of one of the AT-STs....only to be chagrined when the AT-ST deftly maneuvered with a side-step and cranked its 'head' up and back to open up with its Blasters at them. He easily avoided the bolts from the main, front Twin Cannon, but the side mounted light blaster cannon managed to clip the starboard 'wing' of the wedge-shaped Rebel Speeder causing the vehicle to shake and shudder for a moment; but Cal soon had control regained and other than a trail of smoke now leaking from the Snowspeeder, the craft SEEMED in good shape....Cal attempted to line up the AT-ST and cut loose a shot from the T-47s front twin laser cannons, but was dismayed to see the shots impact the ground right in front of the Imperial Scout Walker and in a flash, the Snowspeeder had zipped past the AT-ST and he was hauling back and around on the controls to line up another pass....

In the trench, the Rebel troops noted the rapid approach of the Imperial troops and one of the AT-STs and the first shots began to be fired from their Rifles and Carbine....most falling way short or flying high over the heads of the enemies coming uphill...though the blaster barrels DID warm up; making Zuul feel slightly better about the situation...

In the far distance the massive AT-AT loped froward and the big, twin Assault Laser cannons mounted in its 'chin' opened up, one of them landing a direct hit on the Golan Arms Laser Tower; causing it to turn into a pile of rubble and a pair of charred bodies in a short-lived explosion of a moment....

Image

As one of the AT-STs surged forward towards them; 3 Imperial squads raced out ahead of it...coming to within about 300 meters and the two Rebels manning the Repeat Blaster opened up on the remnants of the center squad; scything bursts of fire into the Snowtroopers midst. A ragged cheer went up as 3 troops were cut-down....only to be cut-off as the AT-ST opened up with its own Blasters....most of the shots just melting snow and throwing perma-frost and rock up into the air; but one blast managing to land inside the trench and fry a pair of unlucky Rebels. The two squads trailing the AT-STs fell down into the snow...belly-crawling for a moment as the Imperial vehicle 'ran' ahead....getting to within 200 meters of the Rebel position while the two still intact Snowtrooper squads from the first wave moved fast to the extreme left and extreme right of the Rebel trench....

Zuul and Kitkatarra along with a pair of Rebel troops were on the Right side; watching as the 8 Imperials moved to within about 150 meters....ducking down as the trooper carrying the Light Repeat Blaster sent a burst of blaster fire their way....though it passed over-head and hurt no-one....

In the center of the trench; Vale Starcloud had instinctively crouched down when the Golan Laser Tower behind him had been hit, sending shrapnel raining down...though none of it hurt the nascent Jedi. To one side of him were the pair of Rebels manning the tripod mounted Repeat Blaster, while to the other were a quartet of obviously scared Rebel troops ducking down and still clearly shaking off the impact of watching the Tower get destroyed right behind them.....The young Jedi noticed the three remaining Snowtroopers of the Center squad slowly getting to their feet and gathering their weapons....intending no doubt to charge the Rebel position...

On the far Left side of the Trench, Professor Clark watched the battle thru his monocular, putting it away now that the close-up fight was about to begin. The veteran academic-turned-Rebel barely flinched when a pair of unlucky Rebel infantrymen were fried about 10 meters away from him, but he noted the panic in the other half-dozen Rebel troops nearby; though the pair of Gunners working hard to recharge the Atgar tower behind him were admirably showing discipline in the face of enemy fire. His attention was drawn to the Imperial Snowtrooper squad coming in from their side as the Imperial carrying the Light Repeat Blaster flicked down its bi-pod, dropped to the ground and fired a well-aimed burst that took out a Rebel soldier near him, and caused him to duck down just as a couple of blaster bolts flashed over where his head had been a moment ago....

How close are the stormtroopers in the middle and on Clark's flank? Are either of them within 100m?

Sorry if it wasn't obvious....the Stormtroopers in the lead wave are about 150 meters away at this point and the closest AT-ST is about 200 meters away

Kitkatarra

Kitkatarra taps her companions on the shoulders and points at the oncoming troopers. Then she roars her defiance and concentrates her blaster fire on the approaching troopers.

Clark fires at the Imperial Light Repeat Blaster, although it's long range he hopes to at least provide some covering fire to give the Atgar Tower team time to ready it.

Jackson begins fiddling with some of the gauges on his console. With a tilt of his head so Cal can hear him better, "Bring us around for another pass. I've shunter some more power to the stabilizers. You should be able to get off a clear shot."

Cal banks the speeder around again and calls out, "Roger that. Coming around for another pass."

Cal will aim and fire his cannons at the AT-ST closest to the friendly troops.

Vale Starcloud

Vale is most concerned about being surrounded. He rushes over to Professor Clark's side to find the squad of stormtroopers advancing faster than he had expected. They're too far away for his blaster pistol, so Vale activates his lightsaber and readies himself to protect the rebels by deflecting incoming fire.

OOC: Using lightsaber parry.

Zuul

Zuul blames the cold for his slowness. He was holding the heated barrel of his rifle near his face when Kitkatarra tapped him on the shoulder, forcing him to begrudgingly move the weapon away from himself and point it at the oncoming enemy. He'll wait until they reach medium range, then fire at the trooper holding the repeating blaster.

Sector 31; East Ridge of Echo Base; Planet Hoth

The battle at the East Ridge of the Rebellion's Echo Base intensified....

On the far right of the trench, the Wookie Kitkatarra yelled out a roar of defiance and fired a blast from her Blaster Carbine that sizzled some snow a few meters in front of the squad of Snowtroopers charging forward at them as the shot fell short. Her actions though inspired the trio of Rebel soldiers near her and they too let out shouts of anger and confidence as they leveled their Blaster Rifles and fired; two of them managing to hit a pair of Snowtroopers and drop them down to the ground and permanently out of the fight. The roars were abruptly cut off when the Snowtrooper wielding a Light Repeat Blaster however cut loose an accurate spray of fire that took out two of the Rebel soldiers and sent the Albino Wookie female and the last Rebel Soldier ducking down in the trench; narrowly avoiding getting hit themselves....

A few meters away, calmly surveying the battle, Zuul the Barabel did his best to throw off the cold and he took careful aim at the Imperial Snowtrooper who had just done so much damage through the scope of his Blastech Blaster Rifle. His clawed finger curled around the trigger and at just the right moment, he stroked it....sending a bolt of energy zipping down over a 100 meters away and smashing right into and through the Imperial's armored helmet and ending that threat forever....

The 5 remaining members of that Snowtrooper squad rushed forward, firing shots from their blaster carbines, but none found a target and the Imperials moved to within 75 meters of the 3 remaining Rebel troops on the far right side of the trench....

In the center of the trench the pair of veteran Rebel troops manning the Repeat Blaster called out to their four junior fellow troops who were huddling a bit scared in the trench as an Imperial fire rained down all around them. The Repeat Blaster crew concentrated on the remnants of the Imperial Snowtrooper squad in front of them and with cool efficiency, they managed to 'walk' their weapons' fire into two of the three remaining Imperial troopers while the four junior Rebel troops shook themselves out of their fear and between the four of them, they managed to drop the last Snowtrooper, leading to a brief moment of victory cheering. The moment was short-lived as the once distant AT-AT continued to lumber forward and with a another barrage of its powerful weapons, a massive blaster cannon bolt took out the Repeat Blaster and its crew in an instant....leaving all four newbie Rebel troops cowering in the trench again....

Vale Starcloud had raced away from the central trench and thus missed the sight of the Repeat Blaster getting hit, but out of the corner of one eye as he moved towards Professor Clark and the left flank of the trench he saw the Atgar laser tower flare up and cut loose a bolt at the AT-ST that was moving in quick in on the other side of his peripheral vision. The young Jedi Student saw the bolt hit, but do little more than peel away paint as it glanced off the front of the angular 'head' of the two-legged walker and in return the AT-ST cut loose a volley of Concussion Grenades, that landed on the far side of the trench and ripped the Tower and its brave crew into pieces. Vale had just reached Clark and ignited his Lightsaber when he saw the Professor fire and miss an Imperial Snowtrooper that returned fire with a Repeat Blaster and those bolts would have hit the Professor if Vale's Force-guided parries with his Lightsaber hadn't intercepted and deflected the bolts to either side of the trench....

On the far left side of the trench, a quartet of surviving Rebel troops opened up with their Blaster Rifles at the approaching Imperial squad of Snowtroopers and managed to put down two of them. They lost one of their own members in the return fire however. Also on that flank, Professor Clark took careful aim with his Blaster Carbine that had an attached Vibro-bayonet...a souvenir taken from an earlier adventure, and he sent a bolt that just barley missed his intended target; the Imperial Snowtrooper carrying a Light Repeat Blaster and causing the Academic to swear in frustration. The Professor had just heard the distinctive sound of a Lightsaber being ignited before Vale Starcloud was suddenly right next to him and whipping the humming blade here and there and causing the Blaster bolts being fired from the Imperial's rapid-fire weapon to be deflected this way and that. The logical Professor KNEW that surely this was impossible; but at the same time CLEARLY it had just happened and once again the Academic was left shaking his head in wonder whenever he witnessed this kind of.....Force Power....being used. The Professor had little time to wonder though as the sight and sound of a Snowspeeder diving in from behind the AT-ST and then firing a blast that turned the Walker into a fireball registered in his eyes and ears and the shock wave knocked Clark and Vale down into the trench together....

Cal had swung the Snowspeeer back around and he raced in towards the AT-ST that was cutting loose with concussion grenades at the Rebels; taking out the Atgar Laser Tower and crew and the Pilot snarled in anger and he took careful aim as he pointed the T-47 Airspeeder directly at the back of the two-legged Imperial instrument of destruction and he fired a blast from the Rebel craft's front laser cannons. He was DELIGHTED to see that his shot slammed directly into the center of the Walker's 'head' and turned it into a fire-ball and pieces of junk splattering all over the surrounding snow. Cal's joy didn't last long though as Jackson was screaming at him and a moment later the Snowspeeder lurched hard as something slammed hard into the craft's left side; making Cal's instruments go crazy and the stick to feel sluggish in his hands. It was all he could do to keep the Snowspeeder from slamming into the ground and he managed to just BARELY get the T-47 clawing back into the air as black smoke billowed out of it's left side*.....

From the rear-seat of the Snowspeeder, Jackson could follow the battle on the sensors and he was quite alarmed to see the AT-AT moving steadily towards the center of the Rebel lines as the battles on the flanks looked to be getting hot. Cal lined up the speeder with the AT-ST that had just taken out Atgar laser tower and with a well-placed blast he destroyed the Imperial Walker; but the other AT-ST had tracked the T-47's approach vector and even as the Engineer yelled out a warning for Cal to juke hard and evade the incoming fire; the Walker cut loose with a well placed volley of Blaster Cannon fire. One of the bolts slammed hard into the left side of the T-47 and Crodowski's stomach immediately jumped into his throat as the Airspeeder wobbled and fell quickly. Somehow, Cal managed to keep the T-47 in the air....the kid could fly, no doubt about that. Looking quickly over his gauges, Jackson could tell the Snowspeeder had been hit hard and maneuvering would be quite difficult and they were certainly gonna be flying slower than before....but luckily, weapons power and targeting systems were still fully functional....

*The Snowspeeder is SERIOUSLY damaged and its current Speed and Maneuverability are reduced to just +2.

Right now the situation is 1 remaining AT-ST at short range to the Snowspeeder (and about 300 meters from the guys in the Center trench); 1 AT-AT at Medium range to the Snowspeeder (and likewise out of range of the guys on the ground). 1 Reduced Squad of 6 Snowtroopers on the Left Flank (facing Clark, Vale and 2 Rebel troops).....1 Reduced Squad of 5 Snowtroopers on the Right Flank facing Kitkatarra, Zuul and 1 Rebel trooper....both of these fights are at about 75 meters at the moment.

In the center there are Currently 4 scared Rebel Troops and not much else....but the last AT-ST is about 300 meters from this position and likely to move fast that way.....with 16 Imperial troops behind it.

Kitkatarra

Kitkatarra targets the nearest storm trooper with a single blast from her blaster carbine. She makes a low growl noise as she tries to hit the trooper. Thinking her plan out she tries to figure out the quickest way to get herself under one of the AT-AT so she can use her magnetic grenade.

Vale looks around at the carnage surrounding him to see if there is a blaster rifle within reach. If there is, he picks it up and starts to fire away at the stormtroopers on his flank. If he can't find anything, he will use his own blaster pistol.

"We have to secure the flanks immediately, so that we can concentrate our firepower at the center!"
