Chapter Eight: Breakfast on the Queen

Reven Stiilpahth listens to the police. Once he is able to take the Captain and/or the XO aside, he whispers, "So, we get a gift of weapons - and a bomb to trigger them? I think once we get the hull repaired we should check the internals - see if there are any secreted storage holes, or devices stuffed inside walls. If the Queen was used for smuggling, the regular crew were unaware - so there must be some unknown spaces inside."

Indrani nods. "I agree. Pranit, who would be best for this job, the people who've been aboard the Queen before?"

"Hmmm, do we want to go down the rabbit hold of asking herself? Also, I could search it, I have the experience, but it might take me 3 or four days without my specialized crew. But the old pilot is on our crew.

"While the ship is in a hiatus I am going into Sparks to check on an old merchant and his scrapyard. It deals with space junk and auctioned off ex-military spares. Might be able to pick up a few pointers to fine tune those lasers.

Anybody want to join me?"

"All we have right now is a pile of parts that aren't even cataloged yet," Indrani replies. "It might be better to wait the trip until we know what we need."

Is there anything that you have found while you were aboard that might have meant that there is some reason for this?

"Apart from two dead bodies? No everything seems to tickety-boo." he says with a deadpan face.

Do the bomb squad take the device away. Can we inspect it at all? Collect the serial numbers, get info on the make and model. Who from the police is going to be appointed to investigate this attempted murder?

Arnwulf shrugs waiting for the all clear and the next task he has to do.

She continues to stand near the edge of the crew, while they are talking, taking in the information. While she does that, on her data pad, she starts running a search for information on the Queen.

Now that the bomb has been removed, the police want to be relatively quick in making themselves scarce. They seem intent on arriving at the Port Authority Offices with a grim demeanour!

The most senior officer approaches Indrani:

Captain, The Port are supposed to ensure your vessel is secure - It really reflects badly on Sparks and puts off trade if their security useless. We'll make sure that they keep a proper eye on you vessel while you are here.

"Thank you," Indrani replies. "We will also increase our readiness level and passive sensor scans."

A relatively quick search for information about the Queen shows an all to exciting week preceded by a few years of layup while the legal arguments regarding ownership were contested. "The State of Sparks Vs Celisse/Kole" crawled through the courts. The details of the arrest of the Queen look dubious - with Captain Celisse being indicted on the evidence of one of his crew and (almost) in the face of all contrary indications. You can see why Ngora Kole (nee Celisse) was successful in her suit.

One concern is the large number of former crew who seems to have suffered fatalities over the last four years. (And one of the remaining two (Jinga Busai) seems to have recently had a lucky escape.)

Another is the fact that two dead bodies (one of a notorious swindler) and a whole heap of dead plants were found on it despite the ship being locked down and secured!

Both Nalani and Reven were crew - Nalani for 4 years; Reven for over a decade (Reven seems to have worked for the ship then for a company that hired the ship) - but they had left before the catastrophe that saw the ship arrested.

There is something about the vessel being wanted at the Afro-Pacific Orbital Complex for a departure without clearance, for which it was fined but has never paid.

Finally, the media have noted that one of the shareholders (Noor) is on the run from a murderous group that attacked and killed her mother and retainers on Touchdown! Where she is now is anyone's guess - but the two missing crew the captain mentioned may well include her.

Oh - The police look like they are preparing to go!

"I will join you in that hope," Indrani sighs.

When the police are gone, Indrani turns to the crew. "Nalani and Reven, the two of you are most familiar with the Queen. Please work with Pranit to organize a sweep of the ship, both inside and out, for anything that shouldn't be here. I will participate until lunch, since I have a meeting to attend. This is an all-hands evolution, so let's be about it."

If you want to muck in as crew you can help me tinker with missile warheads and grease up the turret mounts. If you want more hands off involvement then maybe accompany the Captain or contact Mr O'Hare. I think he is organising various business contacts."

He greets the newcomer in the bay and returns to the ship and cargo bay where the armaments are stored.

Since you're apparently headed that way, search the cargo bay and everything in it to be sure nothing is aboard that shouldn't be aboard. Check in with Pranit when you've finished, and alert Reven or Nalani if you find something questionable or just plain odd."

"So Reven. I hear you have been collecting various gizmo's and gadgets found about the ship. Can we take a look at them so we know what other similarly strange or out of place objects, apart from ex-belter navy mining charges, might be about the ship?"

Indrani turns to the inspectors. "You may continue your survey, but you may want to look over the hull to be sure nothing else is attached to us. We will be checking, too, but you can do it faster."

To Arnwolf: I am very much interested in hands-on work. I would rather not spend time talking to business people, or lawyers. I do have previous experience with life-support systems maintenance and mechanical repairs.
I certainly do, especially repairing pieces while the ship is in battle.

Reven Stiilpahth looks quizzically at the man. "Excuse me? What are you talking about?"

Pranit searches the net to see if any of his former navys ships are in fort wit the idea he could hire some the the boarding crew to help in the search. They are specialized and current. He would like to hire 4 active crewmen if they are available.

After that, Pranit will start with a 1 hour discussion on boarding and searching techniques and downloading a blueprint to his phone and look at it for potential spaces.

He would also like to see the ship skin survey for anything out of place.

"We are going to start here, Its the most likely smart spot for smugglers in my opinion."

Pranit searches the net to see if any of his former navys ships are in fort wit the idea he could hire some the the boarding crew to help in the search. They are specialized and current. He would like to hire 4 active crewmen if they are available.
