Quest #28 "Kegenstien's Expedition Over the River"
Re: Quest #28 "Kegenstien's Expedition Over the River"
Keyon
"It's always something with this place," Keyon mutters. "And that 'something' is always trying to kill us. It's like some demented sadist crafted this place for his personal playground and likes to watch us squirm." He pauses and his brow furrows. "I should say 'her' playground, shouldn't I?" He sends Feanol and Elnaerel a playful wink. "It'd take a woman's wicked mind to come up with all this." If it isn't clear from the wink that he's joking, Keyon's ever-present grin makes it obvious.
He surveys the insect mounds with displeasure. "I'm in favor of avoiding anything sharp, pointy, bitey, clawy, chewy, or growly. At least until I've had a little snack and some shut-eye," he adds. "Or a good blast of Elnaerel's healing touch."

Elnaerel "I hear you." says the elven cleric as she hears Keyon's remarks on the luring dangers of the island. "Yes, women are always evil, so be careful. I can't heal anyone for the rest of the day, so don't count on that also." She smirks but doesn't pay any more attention at the subject.
She stares at the mounds. "Regarding those, we better avoid them. Maybe they're not big, but they are many and I don't know how we could fight them. It's a thought we can keep at the back of our heads, The Knife's remark on them eating the wood from the houses makes a lot of sense. This makes things more difficult... We can discuss about it once we get to the river. Be careful, Darklin, you look way to weaken from the last fight." She helps the spellsword walk if he needs it.

Re: Quest #28 "Kegenstien's Expedition Over the River"
Just for clarification, the muddy, holey mounds built into the cliff wall were similar to this in construction, but the material and shape is not consistent, making it unlikely that the horrible monsters living inside them are the same creatures.

This entire jungle is comprised of thousands of different trees and plants of all makes and sizes, including strange hardwoods the elf has never seen before.

"I understand the reticence, but again urge that we show some speed in choosing and acting. Every minute we sit still in this place more creatures are heading toward us."

The Knife
"The thing about a raft," muses The Knife, "is that it would probably take as long to build it and float down the river as it would to just walk there. We can't be that far from the sea by now."
"If we are planning to raft somewhere else, like back to Beachtown, it would probably be worth the effort. Though of course floating across open water on a raft might be quite risky".

Already moving west towards the river but avoiding the termite? Mounds. Agreed. Lets move.
Maybe we would be better off swimming out on the current.

The Dutty River
Godsday, 23rd of Goodmonth
Early Afternoon, Rainy, Humid, Wet
Giving the strange conical mounds a wide berth, the group moves on for a short time, eventually coming to a muddy riverbank containing a 25 foot wide, swiftly flowing river. They see a few animal tracks here and there, as if they had been drinking from the water, but don't spot any other immediate threats nearby. It is apparent from this side that their is a trail that runs along the waterway just above the opposite bank.
There is talk of building a raft, but TK reminds the others that an endeavor like that would take several hours, if not days, to complete. When Keg suggests swimming for it, Elnaerel looks down at her chainmail armor and sighs heavily.

Elnaerel
"I think it's better if we go by foot. We could follow the river if you will, so that we have water at have, but I can't think of any safe place, not even the ogre camp with all those giant insects you said you saw at night.
The cave we saw didn't look like a good option, but if we compare with the rest..."
How long would it take to go back to the beach and to go back to town?

The Knife
The Knife nods in agreement with Elnaerel. "I think that's a good plan. Head back to the river mouth and the crossing there. At that point we can decide if we cross the river and head back to town, or spend the night in the cave." He looks around. "I mean, we've covered a lot of ground here, between the river and the cliffs. Do you think there's anything else to find?"

Darklin
I for one would like to regroup and heal up. I am at a disadvantage with my bow so Heading back to the giants is my vote. Grab a few tendons and maybe stay by the cave at the river mouth. We will not make it back to town before all the night creatures come out. We have to stay away from the octopus or whatever it is in the cave but that will be easy.
Someone should go across and see if there is anything in the water. We can toss your chainmail across and then you can put it back on if you wish.

"Are you sure about being able to get a new bowstring from the remains of the ogres?" The Knife asks Darklin. "It sounded like they were being eaten up pretty well by scavengers last night. There may not be much of them left".

Elnaerel to Darklin. "I'm not taking off my chainmail here by any chance. But I think going back to the ogre camp might be a good idea, if nothing else. We could spent last night there, we can spend another one, and you get to rest and also to collect your tendons. What do you all say?"

Goes to the water where he fills his waterskin and waits for the others to do the same while they hash it out. He doesn't add to the conversation, but despite possibly looking like he is ignoring them, he listens even as she assesses the river and both banks both north and south. After he splashes himself off a bit to wash away some of the grim from the last couple days, he stands and begins walking south. We can argue while we walk.

Fills his skin and follows after Keg.
I am following Keg. He is our leader. Are you ready Feanol? I don't know how much of a body guard I will be right now, but stay close. I'll do what I can.

The elf shrugs. "Anywhere but here is fine by me." He grins as he falls in behind the ladies. "But I admit, the local scenery isn't terrible."

The Dutty River
Godsday, 23rd of Goodmonth
Early Afternoon, Rainy, Humid, Wet
Taking the time to refill their depleted water supply, the group seems to be at a stalemate on what to do next. The majority of the party seems content to find the rocky cave again where they can rest.
Noting the indecision, Keg starts walking south, back towards the beach, along the eastern side of the river, opposite the trail. The going is not easy with all the vegetation growing this close to the water's edge, causing the group to move inland around large trees and rocks several times as they travel. It becomes painfully obvious right away that the trip back to the beach will take a long, long time moving cross country through the thick, untamed jungle.

What about finding a narrow spot in the river and felling a tree. We can then pick up speed on the trail and get back faster?
OOC- Are we on the same river that passes through the Old Pirate Village?
