Quest #28 "Kegenstien's Expedition Over the River"
Re: Quest #28 "Kegenstien's Expedition Over the River"
The Knife
The Knife nods approvingly as Feanol explains her idea. "That's a very good plan! May I make a suggestion? If we do come back, and get here with enough time, maybe we could haul some dry branches up there? If we can get those to burn, that might really hurt those nasty bugs."
He goes over to look at the lean-to. "You know, I've had another idea...what?...no, I'm not trying to get all the credit...oh, alright then...It has been suggested to me...by my WHAT? I am not saying that...you are NOT my intellectual superior...are NOT...ARE NOT!..." The Knife suddenly stops and looks around at everybody. He blushes.
"Er...anyway...this idea...the lean-to...can we dismantle it and take it with us, perhaps? We gnomes are rather handy at engineering" The Knife starts to examine the pieces of the structure, possibly closer than is necessary. Anybody standing close notices that he's muttering as he does so. "Are not...are not...are not..."

Nods as he listens to ideas while munching on some of his rations. I like the oil idea. Practical and direct, has its own contingency plan.
For now, let's head north and explore more of this cliff face. From what I understand it will lead us to where the natives live. Maybe we will learn something from then too.

Feanol
Hearing Darklin's question she remembers that he was unconscious when they looked at the map that was found. "Well I'm not sure, how close we are to the other side of the Island, I know we're not very far from the shore we were on. But I do have a map that may interest you. We found this stashed away by the Ogres" She will walk quickly over and flounce down beside him, and pull the map they found out of her pouch and show it to him.

While the others study spells, say prayers, or whatever else their morning routines entail, the young rogue climbs a tree, loops his rope around a stout brach and snaps it tight before climbing down, hand over hand, without using his feet at all.
He rests a moment and stretches his shoulders, back, and chest, then leaps up and climbs the rope before descending again. This performance is repeated several times before he loosens the rope and coils it back up.
He flips himself into a handstand, his lower back tightly-arched, and presses himself up several times. This is also repeated a handful of times, along with several other movements to tax his muscles, though not impair them so much that he'll be tired and sore. More to stimulate them and push blood through the muscles.
His exercises complete, the thief feels warm, loose, and nimble. Ready to go.
"I like burning them out," he says as he ambles back into camp. "Dirty beggars." He gathers his belongings and looks to the others with a lopsided smile. "Ready when you are."

Darklin
Darklin takes the map and looks at it. Shakes his head in disbelief.
This map looks just like the one that was given to my party before we left Greyhawk City. The paper is different but the drawing is the same. If this was draw by someone then the library is in one of these buildings that space out between the monoliths.
He looks at Feanol with a serious look.
Do you mind if I copy this map? The one I had was lost with my friends to the dwarves. Can you imagine the knowledge that could be in that library? Ancient tomes full of forgotten spells and ways to increase magical powers. Maybe even information on crafting magical items. If there is a way we have to find it. I got a score to settle with the dwarves here, ever since they slaughtered my crew.
He gets a glassy eyed look and stares off into space. Still holding the map, Feanol can see his hand shaking.

A Beautiful Buggy Day
Godsday, 23rd of Goodmonth
Morning, Warm, Humid, Buggy
With the indomitable insects still chomping away at them, the party tries to pretend that this is just another normal morning out in the woods.
Feanol suggests a popular plan to deal with the openings in the cliff face while TK carries on a different conversation. The gnome puts his tiny hand on one of the three huge, easily 500 pound tree trunks used to prop up the single wall of the ogres shelter, wondering how easy it would be to bring the structure along with him. If the others could actually hear his blades side of the story......
Keg suggests that the group continue searching north, along the face of the cliff, to see if they can find the rumored native camp, using this area as a back-up plan if they need to return. He watches the elf doing his morning stretches, wondering how many handstands he could do if he tried that routine.
Darklin looks over the drawing from the discarded packs found in the shelter, seeing something very familiar. He assures the others that the markings must be where the obelisks can be found, and that the ancient library he came here to find must be one of the other structures listed. His desire to find the place only grows in intensity when he compares it to the map he once owned, but none of the others seem to share in his excitement.

Elnaerel
"As interesting as the obelisks might look, we're out here for an entirely different purpose... We should bring this information to the town, of course, and maybe later we, or others, would be able to take care of it. But, now, we should try to find suitable defensible land for the whole town to move...
That's also why I'm with Keg. We should continue exploring and pushing north."
I really would like to develop these answers a bit more, but I don't have much time lately, sorry!

She sees his hand and that look in his eye. "Don't worry Feanol you can make a copy, and I agree it is a terribly interesting option to try to find. Would you like some help packing up? It looks like we're about ready to move." With that she'll go get her bag and gear and come back to get the map

The Knife
The Knife goes around the edge of the clearing collecting the various tripwires he set up the previous evening and returning them to his beltpouch. Once that's done, he starts to muse about the upcoming day's travel.
"So we're heading further north then? Fair enough. I've heard there's a waterfall further up the river. That seems to indicate that the river and the cliffs meet at some point. Could be an interesting sight".
The Knife starts to pack up the rest of his gear.

We should repair and upgrade this shelter if we are to use it on the return back. If we can make shelters every night we stop then it could safe our bacon in the long run. Being out in these bugs at night will wear us down. We should travel on and stop early to build another lean-to or some other type shelter. And keep going until we find a good spot for town.
With that said he gathers his gear and weapons in preparation for moving out.

Re: Quest #28 "Kegenstien's Expedition Over the River"
A Beautiful Buggy Day
Godsday, 23rd of Goodmonth
Mid Morning, Hot, Humid, Buggy
After packing up and storing their gear, the group gets ready to head further north along the cliff face. The higher the sun climbs in the morning sky, the less flying insects they have to deal with, but even the daytime bugs are plentiful and extremely annoying.
Breaking a new trail along the cliff face where there is slightly less vegetation to deal with seems to be the path of least resistance. After an hour or two passes, their slog through the thick bush never seems to get any easier, but at least they don't find anything more dangerous than the ogres out here. Signs of normal animal and bird activity are seen everywhere now, and the jungle is alive with all manner of unseen chirping and squawking wildlife. The ground here is far less sandy than it is closer to shore and back in town, already showing better promise for more successful farming.
As Keyon leads the way north, hacking at limbs and vines as he hikes, he suddenly stops the group and points up ahead at a few strange looking large mounds of dried dirt that appear to be packed tight against the rocky cliff wall. The mounds stand about 6 or seven feet high and are dotted with small holes that cover their surface.

"Obviously," the elf mutters, "something deadly and aggressive lives there. Do you know how I know?" He pauses and raises an eyebrow for dramatic effect. "Because every single living creature I've encountered outside of Beachtown--and more than a few within it--has tried to attack me, eat me, or enslave me in a mine." He shakes his head and, with a wry chuckle, gestures toward the mounds. "Avoiding the damn things at all cost is my advice."

I agree. Let's make a note of about where this is and maybe on another expedition we can come prepared to burn it out with oil. Just like the rest of this hell-pot island, the bugs are everywhere and big enough to kill a man. as he non-ironically slaps a biter fly on the back of his neck.

A Beautiful Buggy Day
Godsday, 23rd of Goodmonth
Late Morning, Hot, Humid, Buggy
Wisely suggesting that the group bypass this area one at a time, Keyon gives the mounds of dirt a wide berth as they continue along on their journey north. Nothing more can be made out of the area through the thick bush, but nothing rushes out to attack them either, which seems like a plus for once.
Hacking and cutting their way around them, the group eventually veers back towards the easier path along the base of the cliffs again. As the morning slowly passes, the bugs continue to harass, though their numbers are a bit more tolerable during the sunny parts of the day. Those with a knack for such things notice that the natural bird and animal life continues to thrive in this portion of the jungle, with much better conditions than what has been seen around the overhunted town. And again, the dirt below their feet looks dark and rich, nothing like the sandy soil closer to the beach.
After another hour or so, the group is about to take a quick break for lunch under a shady overhead rocky outcropping when Keyon hears a strange whistling noise coming from directly above his head.
