The Knife

The Knife inspects the boar's white-spotted innards. "Maybe it's got something to do with the mold on those bales? Hogs eat anything after all." After a few moments he says, "What's that? Mmm? Good point...Here's an idea Keg: what if the boar was sick from this stuff? Too sick notice what was going on around it until you grabbed hold of it?"

Feanol

Blushes at Darklin's feverish remarks, and then quickly checks to see if Keyon heard it.

After studying the parchments she will let all know that they seem to have found someone's work on tracking down the magical sites on this Island from the Ogres. She'll show it to any and all, she'll particularly make sure to show it to Darklin when he wakes up enough and is able to view it.

Keyon

The elf sends his comrade a sideways glance at the fevered flirtation, then chuckles under his breath. "I stand over your bleeding body to fight a wild boar and this is how you thank me, eh?" He mutters to the unconscious man. "Flirting with the lady I'm after." He spares a grin and makes certain the wounded man is comfortable before turning to The Knife.

"Forgive me, friend. I missed your question. I'm fine remaining out, as well. Now that we have food and some semblance of shelter." He peers into the jungle outside. "Then again, who knows what manner of beasts live in this accursed place? We might be lucky to survive the night."

He glances at the odd spots on the innards and his brow furrows. "Perhaps I will eat rations tonight," he says while liberating one of the four packs they discovered.

White Spots
Moonday, 22nd of Goodmonth
Late Afternoon, Sunny, Hot, Humid, Buggy

When Keg asks around about the white spots covering the boars organs, TK thinks he might have the answer, claiming that the animal could have gotten sick from extended exposure to the fumes and smoke from burning the moldering plants. It might be a longshot, but nobody else comes up with a more likely reason for the anomaly.

The gnome and Elnaerel continue working on the walls that will be used to cover the open ends of the lean-to. Moving the stinking bales away from the camp without actually touching them proves difficult, but seems much safer and can be done with enough effort. Eventually they get one of the screens finished and are eager to try it out for size, to see how it will work for keeping the bugs at bay.

Feanol studies the markings on the parchment, noting the words in the common tongue. She is pretty sure that these items were taken from someone else and not drawn by the nearly mindless ogres. Passing the page around, many theories are shared about the markings. Most of those gathered have at least heard of the ruined temple found out in the jungle several miles north of Beachtown. Could that be the same landmark noted on this sheet? And if so, it is possible that the other markings on the page could certainly be the strange obelisks that have been the talk of the town for the last few days. Flipping through the pages to make sure the rest are indeed empty, the aspiring mage finds another sheet stuck in with the others that also contains writing. These writings look magical in nature.

Keyon looks over the animals best and most nutritious portions before suggesting that he might just eat rations tonight instead. He takes one of the packs for himself and notices that the now empty firepit will need to be stoked before any of the meat can be cooked anyway.

While the others work, Darklin talks in his sleep, much to the chagrin of the now slightly embarrassed Feanol.

The Knife

"No, it's not worth the risk", agrees The Knife. "We're not starving". He keeps on working on the screens for the lean-to.

Elnaerel

"Looks like parasites. Anyway, that's something we have to get rid of, lest it attract any predators or carrion-eaters." She signs at the dead boar. "A pity. We would've had a good feast. At least the animals of the forest and the soil will profit from its death." She keeps on helping The Knife with the screens and looks at the sky. "We still have some hours before sundown." She's already sweating from the effort and the heat.

Keyon

The young rogue slips outside to make a slow circuit of the immediate area, remaining close but getting a good look at their surroundings and picking out useful spots for keeping watch later. He grimaces at the notion of spending an evening with the insects, but admits that it's better than passing through the belly of some other beast from the jungle.

Bacon Caution
Moonday, 22nd of Goodmonth
Early Evening, Warm, Humid, Buggy

Once it is agreed upon that the animal shouldn't be eaten, TK and Elnaerel continue their work on the shelter walls.

Keyon looks around the rough clearing, searching for trees and other places to set up watch once night approaches. Looking at the sky, the elf determines that they only have a couple hours of sunlight left before darkness creeps in.

The Knife

When he sees Keyon scouting the area, The Knife pipes up with his own idea.

"I know I've already mentioned rigging up that falling log trap. But I'm thinking we should put it over there." He points at the narrow trail the ogres made towards the river. "That's the most likely way an intelligent attacker would come. They'd risk making too much noise creeping through the bushes in any other direction".

"And things like giant snakes or spiders probably wouldn't set it off. And they're probably the most likely things to just drop out of the trees."

"I bet Keyon and I could rig up a few tripwires too. Something that would make a noise. Like a pouch of iron spikes dropped on the ground. We could put those in other likely spots. If we have time,"
he says, peering at the low sun.

"Maybe we should rig the log trap first though, eh?"

Elnaerel will help where it's needed.

Sorry I don't elaborate, but I'm pretty busy these days!

Keyon

The elf will assist TK with preparing traps, rigging tripwires with noise-makers, and attempting to hoist the deadfall trap into position. He's been uncharacteristically silent since emerging from the reeking lean-to, his mind chewing on recent events. Something about their encounter with the other group continues to gnaw at the back of his mind.

Meat Pile
Moonday, 22nd of Goodmonth
Evening, Warm, Humid, Buggy

Keg drags the bloody sow carcass away from the clearing, adding it to the massive pile of dead meat the party has accrued recently. The bodies are already starting to reek and bloat in the heat of the moist jungle.

TK, Elnaerel, and Keyon set up trip wire alarms and other traps, whatever they can create from the surrounding natural materials. They notice all to soon that, the darker it gets, the more the bugs come out.

Feanol keeps an eye on Darklin, clearing out the shelter as best she can and starting a small fire in the pit before it becomes too dark to see well. Noticing that flying insects are starting to accumulate inside the leanto, she tries to set the end screens in place, but is too weak to do so on her own.

In what seems like a few seconds, darkness descends upon the clearing, and the deafening noise of the night jungle begins its daily crescendo.

Actions?

Can I get a watch order for the night, please?

Keyon

"Here..." The young elf lends his strength to Feanol's in an effort to work the makeshift screens into place. He smiles briefly in the near-darkness, a quick flash of white teeth in the fire's dim glow.

"I'll take the first watch. Who shall I wake when it's time?"

The Knife

The Knife smiles at Keyon. "I do have a suggestion....Of course, it's just a suggestion..."

"Perhaps Keg could take the first shift? Since he's the only one of us who can't see well in the dark, we could build up the fire while he's on guard, for more light. Then once the fire dies down, Keyon could take over, then me, then Feanol and finally Elnaerel."

Keg

Is about to volunteer for the second shift then shuts his mouth as The Knife makes the suggestion he takes the first. He looks torn between offended and thankful... the war plays out briefly over his face and...

Well, dammit... you make a good point i suppose... I'll take first watch. I know you'll find it hard to believe, but I can be a bit grumpy when I'm woke up. Or so I'm told...

Keyon

The affable rogue nods once. "Works for me, mate." If his aid is required in building up the fire, he'll do so. Then he settles back against something solid, curls his hand loosely around the hilt of his dagger, and closes his eyes.

Elnaerel

"I'm fine with The Knife's advice." says the elfin woman, clapping one of the bothersome bugs on her neck. She starts to wonder if the stinky bales might have been a means to keep the insects away. "And, please, if you hear something while on watch, wake us up! Don't go investigate by yourselves."

Will Elnaerel's waking up earlier interfere with her getting her spells back?
