Carousing through the Night of 6/20 [Vesper, Draven, Galreth, Gaurbal]

#221 Post by Eris »

The group returns to The Trident and Shield and starts to party. There is singing, dancing and drinking...a lot of drinking! It all gets a bit hazy as you party through the night....Carousing is in progress!

OOC: It appears you have put up 20 gp to CAROUSE which is less than the 30 gp from the book, but you also got some "on the house" drinks during/after the performance, so I'll say you get the 30 gp +0 level bonus on your rolls.

Now about LUCK and Carousing Outcome rolls:

  1. Vesper gets 1 LUCK as part of her performance;
  2. Because you are using 20 gp rather than the 30 I'm only going to allow 1d8+1d3 for this Carousing Outcome on the In-Book Table, I will often generate Alternate Carousing Outcome Tables, but this time we'll use the one from the book;
  3. You can use a LUCK on the Carousing Outcome roll (If I roll for you, I'll not use it unless you tell me you want me to re-roll but then you'll have to accept the re-rolled outcome) but only one of the d8 or d3, and you have to call it;
  4. Draven said I should roll for him, so I will, but I'll list your names and you can either post a roll or tell me to do it.
  5. After the rolls are in I'll edit THIS post with the results and you can tell me if you are using a LUCK to re-roll and which of the 2 dice (or if I should for you).
  6. There will very likely be some role playing connected with the Outcomes for each of you as I will add complications to pretty much all of the outcomes! :)

Is that all clear, and fair?
  • Draven: [1d8]=4+[1d3]=3
You are awaken the next morning when a woman rises from the bed you are in. She puts on the dress Vesper was wearing the night before, but she isn't Vesper...you can't remember her name or how you came to be here! Looking down, you realize you are naked and don't see your clothing anywhere in the room either. All you remember is you led the entire tavern in a wildly insulting song about the Earl of Loclair, a powerful but disliked noble from your homeland and a woman who smelled like roses gave you a long deep kiss...you still smell the roses. Gain 4 XP.

  • Vesper: 8
You survived a blindfolded knife-throwing demonstration unscathed Gain 4 XP and a luck
    token

  • Galreth: [1d8]=7+[1d3]=2
By trickery, you beat a rival crawler in a test of skill Gain 5 XP and an NPC enemy.

Saman, the Warrior, challenged any of you to an arm wrestling contest. Draven was already off with some women and Vesper disappeared after she won the knife throwing contest and both were too drunk to do anything anyway, so Galreth stepped up...and hypnotized Saman then told him he was weak as water! Galreth didn't win anything as the gambler taking bets said he was cheating by using a spell! Galreith was just happy that he and Gaurbal were able to get out of The Sea Cow and back to The Shield and Trident in one piece after the gambler taking bets, his half dozen thugs, and Saman started getting nasty. Saman was throwing threats as Galreith and Gaurbal retreated, Galreth should consider him an enemy now! On the plus side, Galreith knows his Hypnotize spell works now, and he has a good idea of who he should avoid over in the North District.

  • Gaurbal: 6
The Thieves' Guild bilked you for 5% of your total wealth Gain 4 XP.

You knew the party shouldn't have wandered up into the North District to party at The Sea Cow, but they did anyhow. Gaurbal, thinking he should support Galreth bet against Saman in the arm wrestling contest, but the gambler taking the bets wouldn't pay off, saying he and Galreith cheated and lost the 1 Silver he put up, and backed it up with a half-dozen armed thugs. He did learn to be more careful in the North District! Maybe not go already drunk, and maybe not with just Galreith around to watch your back.

Draven will tell the woman she was terrific even though he has no idea. Then he will ask if she knows where he left his clothes.

Vesper:

"You survived a blindfolded knife-throwing demonstration (contest???) unscathed"

This seems so fabulously chaotic an outcome I'll happily keep this so no re-rolls needed.

Therefore for Vesper please insert the below (which hopefully contains enough "hooks" for everyone else and the DM to work with :) ):

Vesper's initial conscious thought was "Arrrgh!" followed by "This isn't my room!" followed by "By the shadows - sooner or later I'm going to need clothes!" Things swam into view... and back out again. Managing to finally coincide growing consciousness with vision she recognized the cloak and hat with a fine feather that she had worn during the bet about...

Knife-throwing!!!

Which drunken soul had she let throw knives at her?!? Who had she pitched her own dagger at? Blindfold! After the knife-throwing - was that so early on? There had been a fine woman join their company... or maybe that was later... and that had set her jealousy and attention seeking off... she really needed to work on her flaws... and also caused the bet. She had set herself to more flirting with Draven and then teasing Gaurbal because she liked him but couldn't admit it and, while sitting on his lap - because it made him uncomfortable, had wildly claimed that getting a kiss from any woman in the room was just a matter of a man "wearing a mysterious cloak or an impressive hat". While Jake seemed entirely convinced Galreth had challenged her theory and quite reasonably stated that both comeliness and human nature undermined her bold claim.

Whereupon... oh, now she groaned aloud in embarrassed recollection.

Whereupon she had claimed she would steal kisses from all about the tap room... but in disguise! She blushed as she remembered demanding the loan of Gaurbal's doublet and then kissing him for both payment and good measure! Then, donning the borrowed doublet, hat and cloak and dropping her voice to match her now manly swagger she had toured the packed room with the intoxicated intent of seducing kisses from females and thereby practically proving the learned Galreth wrong!

It was as she returned to triumphantly report the stealing of two kisses (and wasn't going to mention the thrown drink that she dodged and the slap she didn't) that the tables were turned. She was sure she saw Draven through the press, the clothing was surely his if the build was not, but he now wore what, she had to giddily admit, was... a really impressive hat. Even as she tapped a shoulder the mysterious bravo, face obscured by the hat's brim, swept her into an immediate embrace and a kiss that left her breathless, adrift in the crowd and recalling no more than a faint smell... of... roses???

(OOC: As stated I'm hoping to leave enough slack/vagary in here to leave opportunity for everyone to join in while adding a little to the fragmented tale).

Gaurbal

[1d8]=2;[1d3]=2
I'll use a point of Luck to reroll the d8:
[1d8]=4
So, 6.
Since he's skint of his own money I'm not sure you want to play that one.

She laughs shaking her head and making her red hair shine in the morning sunlight streaming in through a window, "As drunk as you were, you have no idea either way. Your Vesper traded you for my dress and I almost had to carry you up the stairs to get you to bed. At least you don't snore!"

There's a knock on the door, "And that's probably your clothes. Come in!"

A young woman, maybe 16, comes in carrying Draven's clothes folded and cleaned. She is followed by a huge man with four buckets of steaming water.

"Morning Mistress Norra. I cleaned and repaired the clothing and had Harry bring up hot water for your bath." she says as the brute pours the water into a large tub at the side of the room.

"Thank you Hazel." she goes over to her and hands her several coins, "I'll let you distribute this to everyone who has been so helpful while I was here, and I'll settle my bill when I head downstairs. The gentleman may make use of the tub before he departs. Again thank you and I hope to see you again."

"Harry take my trunk, but leave this carpetbag. I'll want the trunk delivered to The Blair Witch at Dock 3. Can you see to that?"

After Hazel and Harry leave with her trunk she turns to Draven and says with a grin, "If I wasn't leaving for the Old Country on the rising tide I might consider keeping you for another day or two to see what you can do when you aren't falling down drunk before returning you to Vesper, but no time for that now."

"Maybe I'll see you when I come back this way, and I'll be sure to sing your song at Court back home. The King will get a good laugh from it."

She removes Vesper dress, which is too loose on her anyway, and tosses it onto the bed then dresses in trousers, and a leather vest and leather jacket over her shirt. A broad brimmed hat goes on her head with her long red hair tucked up inside and then she buckles on a belt with a rapier in a scabbard and places a dagger in her boot.

"There ready for the ship!" she says, "I travel as a young man when I can. It's much more safe than as a woman traveling alone, don't you know?"

"Tell Vesper she can keep my clothing." Norra says adding with a grin, "And If I were you I'd have Vesper's dress cleaned before you give it back to her."

With that she bows, like a man, and then exits through the door leaving Draven alone in the room. The bath is still steaming and he could use a bath he supposes...

Looking around, Vesper sees that she is alone in bed. Whoever was there with her has gone. In a pile next to the bed are clothes. A pair of trousers, a ruffled shirt, a waistcoat in green and red and a jacket striped in red and blue. A floppy hat with a huge white feather is hanging from the bed post. Vaguely she remembers trading her dress for this outfit...it wasn't Draven, no, it was someone who smelled of roses. She has no recollection of where she is, who's bed this is, or how she came to be here! Maybe she should curb her carousing a bit, she could get into a lot of trouble if she's going to blackout like this.

Standing up, she notes that she is still wearing her long underdress and her stockings, but her boots are? There they are over there near the door. In looking around she sees that this room is small, dirty and the single window is glassless, covered only with a wooden shutter that lets in only streaks of light...and it stinks! The slop bucket has been used, and not emptied! The bed is, well she's slept rough and that's worse, but if she doesn't get bedbugs from this bed and its dirty bed sheets she'll start praying again...she thinks as she absently starts to scratch...and that'll be the day!

Vesper is hungry, thirsty, and has a headache. And she still doesn't know where she is...but she hears noises coming through the rough wood of the floorboards from below, the sounds of a tavern she thinks.

"Saman, Saman, Samen... He can't take a joke and would not take a few free drinks to make up for it, that man is headstrong and uptight. At least the gambling guild did not ban me from their games.
Give hem a few days and see if he forgets or not."

Vesper curses her "gift" for ending up in situations like this and then sets to improving her lot. Musing that since she had stopped bothering the gods with an acolyte's imprecations by rote then they might have the decency to reciprocate by excluding her from their caprices. Gagging at the slop bucket she makes escaping its stench a priority and opens the window both for light, clues as to her whereabouts and aids to navigating an escape therefrom. While she does so she decides her underdress is the cleanest thing in the room and rubs herself clean(er) with that before donning "her" manly garb and belting her underdress about her waist as a sash. Taking the view that she won't be either paying for this room or eating any breakfast prepared in this filthy establishment she also sets about climbing down to street level.

Ridiculous!

Setting her magnificent hat at a jaunty angle Vesper smiles a challenge at the new day and begins to walk not too quickly in the direction of where she thinks a better part of town might be.

Setting her magnificent hat at a jaunty angle Vesper smiles a challenge at the new day and begins to walk not too quickly in the direction of where she thinks a better part of town might be.
Throwing open the shutters, Vesper looks down from the 3rd story onto an alley. She catches a glimpse of a busy street to her left and a blank wall to her right that rises up to almost the level she is at. The sun is just rising above the blank wall making it hard to make out much detail, but by squinting her eyes she sees crenellations along its top and concludes it is the city wall...the eastern city wall! That could only mean she is in the southern, Slum District, and has no idea, none at all, how she came to be here. She vaguely remembers Galreith saying something about a gambling hell north of The Shield and Trident , maybe she got turned around and went south instead of north, that would explain where, but not really how especially not the how of her being in what is probably a servant's room.

In any case, the stonework on this wall is rough and poorly done, but great for hand and foot holds and Vesper has absolutely no problem climbing down to the alley. She quickly exits into the busy street beyond and looks around. North is that way and that's the direction back to the Guild Hall, The Shield and Trident, and her actual room and bed.

Vesper gratefully heads North for the Guild Hall. She knows that if keeps the Wall to her right and doesn't cross the Main Street to her left then she must reach the Docks. She relies on the early hour combined with the impressiveness of her hat to avoid interference to her journey. If she makes it out of the slums she plans to buy fresh bread or pastries on the way home.

"If we meet again, I'll try to be less drunk, my lady. The pleasure was mine."

He will take advantage of the bath and then head back to meet the others.

”Gaurbal, I am sorry for what happened, I have not drank like that since my initiation to the priesthood. Allow me to cover your bet.

Hands him a silver.

‘Next time it will be the four of us. Now drink this water and let’s get some food and wait for the other younguns.”

Gaurbal

Gaurbal pockets the coin.

"Thank you." he takes a drink of the water "Any night of drinking that you don't need a chirurgeon after is a good one, is what master Berin would say, and we leant something about the North district too."

I'm a huge fan! The above (and the LUCK mechanic) are wonderful innovations with the former generating plot hooks, ally/rival NPCs, etc as well as both colouring and rounding out the game world.

And apologies for late reply! :)

The entire day of 6/21 is spent resting and recovering. The Guild Master returns late in the day to speak to you privately.

"I was able to speak to the Sherriff and the High Priest of Ord as they were together. The Sherriff authorized the Vermin clearing job for the Guild." he says, "As you started this, you get first crack at taking this job."

He shows you the parchment with the job offer...

By order of the Sherriff of Slateholm an offer of 60 gold pieces, 4 sets of Leather Greaves and anything of value found below ground during the operation is made for the clearance of all vermin in the tunnels below The Market District of this town.

"It's going up on the Job Board, but if you want it it's yours. However, there is one slight complication."
says the Guild Master, "The Sherriff insisted that you take one of his guardsmen with you and once he did, the High Priest insisted one of his acolytes accompany you as well. Them being along doesn't affect your pay or you keeping anything you find, but along with you they must go or the job is off."

Draven will get Versper's clothes cleaned on the day of recovery and will return them in character shortly.

"Fine by me," Draven said. "I'm in."

How is Vesper garbed today?

Galreth will wash his clothing also, since that seems the theme of the day. “Drink up everyone, replace your water, you to Jake. I’m glad everyone is home. I will see if I can get the kids to pick up our bread today. I hope our greaves come before we go in the tunnels.”

Galteth putters around during the day, and lets everyone know of his new enemy. “Dunderhead fighter type.”

Draven will tell an artfully enhanced story of how Vesper traded him to a lady for an evening in exchange the woman's clothes. He is clear that he got the better end of the deal as part of the merchandise.

Gaurbal

"Have they not increased the offered coin for the sewer job? I think so, so I am certainly in, and have no issue with having a gaurd and an acolyte with us."

Are we going to divide up some of the earned silver from last night. Even just a few coins to tide Gaurbal over until we finish with the sewers. Do we also want to start a group fund?

Draven is good with both suggestions.
