Hooded Stranger
"Well, we'll see wha we can do, young man," Oskar says, smiling widely at the compliment of having been singled out. "I've got an appointment with Keep Scatterheart I don't want to miss, but, yes, what is this job?"

"I'm sure a keep isn't going anywhere," the stranger says, still in his exaggerated deep voice. "But time is most definitely a factor in my request, which needs to be completed... well, now." For the first time, you sense a bit of urgency in his voice. The stranger continues: "See, the organization I work for -- which wishes to remain anonymous -- we intercepted a merchant caravan a few hours ago, and learned they were on their way to illegally purchase a red dragon egg."

"The leader of that caravan... he looked like... you --"
the stranger says, again indicating Oskar, a dwarf. "I was on my way to the meeting place myself, to try and pass as him myself, but I clearly bear no resemblance."

"There's a solid plan in place, but the exchange is meant to be taking place, well, now. The meet is twenty minutes away, so if you are to help, I really need that decision now."

Any attempt to read the stranger result in a feeling his request is genuine, and, while you're new to the inn you're staying in, neither Hily nor Briez let on that anything unexpected is in play, which match the findings of everyone paying attention.

Oskar Loderr

Oskar grins incredulously, feeling a bit out of his element. He chews it over a bit. After a moment's thought, he offers.... "Do you think all dwarves look alike??"

Slightly exasperated, he looks to his companions, to see what they think...

Strega

Looking at Oskar and chuckling to herself. "Clearly not, but to most non-dwarves I bet they do. People are funny that way. If we intend to do this, and it is up to you Oskar since you will bear the greatest risk I think, we must decide now and not waste what little time we have."

Oskar Loderr

Oskar considers Strega's words, nodding slowly.

To the hooded stranger, he remarks "I'm open to your proposal. If you wish to remain anonymous, you must pay up front, and we must discuss the egg. What do you want with a red dragon egg?"

To Brenzavur, he asks "What do you know about red dragon eggs? And red dragons? Is this thing going to be dangerous?"

EDIT: Meanwhile, Oskar will try to recall what he knows about dragon eggs, or the dragon egg "trade"

Hooded Stranger
"Do you think all dwarves look alike?" Oskar wonders aloud. "Clearly not, I'm sure, but to most non-dwarves I bet they do," Strega chimes in. Oskar considers the wisdom in Strega's words, nods slowly, then turns his attention back to the hooded stranger.

"I'm open to your proposal, but if you wish to remain anonymous, we must insist upon payment up front, and we must discuss the egg. What do you want with a red dragon egg, anyway?"

The hooded stranger rises to his feet. "I will answer all your questions, but let's walk," he says, nodding at Oskar, then proceeds to leave through the front door. "The exhange is soon, and the area is a short ways north of town, so we need to move."

"You'll still have a chance to back out, don't worry."

Once en route, the stranger talks, still in his disguised deep voice, leading the group out of town to the north along a well-traveled path.

"The merchant we intercepted had a sack of diamonds which he was going to use for the purchase. We've kept those, but here --" he says, handing Oskar a sack filled with what appear to be clear, glistening stones. "Tell me if those won't pass as real?" Taking a quick look at the contents and the dwarf confirms upon his initial inspection that they would almost certainly be able to pass for the real things. "They're near worthless in actual value," the stranger adds.

"As for the egg, it's less a matter of us wanting it for ourselves, but more a matter of whose hands we want to keep it out of." Gerrin, thinking back to his studies, seems to recall that dragon eggs come in various sizes, but that red dragon eggs are on the larger side. "This thing could easily be four feet long, and weigh 50 pounds... or more." The stranger, considering the information, shares that the seller's will already have the egg, and have arranged for its transport, so the accommodations necessary to move it should already be in place.

Gerrin, studying the man as he gives his answer, believes he detects some elven tendencies, which doesn't fit is frame. Perhaps the stranger is half-elven?

"Now, the buyers and sellers have never met, and never exchanged names. The sellers have only shared the location they chose for the exchange, and the buyers have only shared that the point person will be of the dwarven persuasion. So --" he says, patting Oskar on the shoulder, "-- you don't actually look like the real merchant, but close enough." he says with a wink. "If a dwarf shows up at the requested location, with a sack full of diamonds, requesting the exact item for sale -- I'm sure you'll pass."

"There's another thing," he says, speaking quickly as he hurries to the drop point. He reaches into a pocket and produced a small silver, finger-length pin or broach. "I'm going to need someone -- it doesn't need to be our merchant here, and is probably better if it's not -- to plant this pin on someone -- anyone -- from the seller's crew. This pin has been infused with magic and will allow us to track them once the transaction has been completed."

"The person entrusted with this pin should ideally be one that won't draw unnecessary attention to themselves, so maybe not the dragon, or the orc,"
he says, eyeing Bren and Strega. "No offense," he adds, then holds the pin out in the direction of Tannaris, hoping he'll volunteer.

"Now, once this exchange has taken place, you are to return with the egg to the Sleepy Salmon, where I will be waiting for you. I will make arrangements with Madame Hily to make sure your room and lodging expenses will be covered as part of your payment for undertaking this task."

"The rest of the reward funds are safely being held back in the inn,"
he says. "I apologize for not having them on me, but I wasn't going to bring them to the meet with me, and I wasn't expecting to find you... then, in my last minute, I spotted your group."

Assuming the group continues, after approximately 15 minutes, the hooded stranger deviates from the main path and heads west, through a patch of heavy brush.

"The amount of your reward will be considerable, but will also depend upon the successful completion of your task. If the egg is returned unharmed and the pin is successfully planted... well, you will be fairly compensated, I can assure you. Now..."

He pauses -- both his movement and his speech -- and addresses the party in a serious tone; his voice lacking some of the false deepness.

"It should go without saying that the health and survival of the sellers is an important condition, right? Being able to track them and learn their whereabouts is perhaps more important than even the egg."

"Understood?"

Once the party agrees, he continues to wade through the thick brush for another minute or two until he halts again, urging the group into silence. Just beyond your current position is a clearing, and the stranger points to what appears to be an abandoned farmhouse approximately 100 yards in.

"That is where the meet is to take place," he says.

"Be safe, and good luck."

---

I will leave the stranger in place for another round of questions, if needed, but otherwise he is set to retreat back to the inn for your return.

Strega

Strega will look for a good place to hide as close to the farmhouse as possible. Once she finds it "I will be here if you need me." pointing her location out to Oskar. She will prepare herself so she can observe and act quickly if needed.

Perception [1d20+4] = 20+4 = 24

Stealth [1d20+2] = 12+2 = 14

Survival [1d20+4] = 10+4 = 14

Wasn't sure if you use survival for hiding in the woods.

Oskar Loderr

Oskar nods to Strega, after the man leaves.

"I'm gonna need a caravan... some muscle..." he indicates Tannaris and Rumble, "and a dragon expert, to verify the egg is genuine before turning over the diamonds... Now, there may be trouble. If this goes sideways, save each other, and destroy the egg, I think. Can't have it fall in the wrong hands, right?"

Oskar secures the diamond sack on his belt, right next to his sack of ball bearings.

Bren ponders the strange request to secure such an item as a dragon egg. He doesn't like it. "A red dragon egg in the wrong hands can be immensely dangerous. It would take time to hatch and subdue but not impossible. And a red dragon at your beck and call? To someone who has evil intent? It is not the natural order of things - we should be extremely cautious and leary of any we deal with - including this hooded figure. I am hesitant to get involved, but if not us, then who to see it done with justice."

Strega

This assumes the hooded figure is gone.

"I agree Bren, I do not trust those selling the egg or the hooded figure either. Our best course may be to destroy the egg, but I think we have to see what happens first. Oskar, do not hesitate to call for help if you need it."

Oskar nods to Bren. "You know the most about dragon eggs, so your call. You try to inspect, and take the egg. Keep their eyes on you... you're intimidating... and me with the diamonds? That'll leave these folks to work."

Tannaris Vethykos

Having accepted the brooch from the hooded stranger, Tannaris examines it closely.

Investigation roll [1d20 +5] = 12+5 = 17
Perception roll [1d20+2] = 5+2 = 7
History roll [1d20+3] = 16+3 = 19

He places it safely in his belt pouch and stands next to Oskar listening to the plans unfold.

Rumble

A dark shape coalesces from the brush. An unclothed black cat-thing emerges.

"I have a new respect for you Oskar. I didn't think you saw me following you guys. Anyway, I checked the area, that guy was alone. Weird, right? What was his name, by the way?"

Rumble listens and tries to catch up on the situation.

Oskar

Oskar addresses Rumble, "I figured you wouldn't want to miss a chance at this, that's all. I don't know how this will go, but we want at least *one* of these egg sellers to live to take the pin, ok?"

Contemplating the game question, Oskar shrugs. "They said nobody knew his name, so how about Gorm Spikefist?" Oskar follows this up with a shrug.

The Plan
It is currently approaching the darkest stages of twilight, or dusk, which present only dim lighting conditions.

The night air is chill, but calm.

Just beyond the area of tall brush you're currently positioned in, which provides you near complete concealment, extends a clearing; a wide area of almost completely flat land with a total absence of trees, shrubs, or other natural objects which could offer any measure of cover. It's obvious why the seller or sellers of the egg picked this location.

An estimated 100 yards into this clearing stands what appears to be an abandoned two-story wood barn or farm house.

The mysterious stranger departs, affording the group some privacy to discuss their plans and strategies, or even abandoning the request all together.

Strega strains her eyes, scouring the distance between their current location and the barn, and with great persistence, manages to locate a small recession in the ground, maybe 30-feet in front of the barn, which is quite possibly the only location in the entire area that will provide any form of strategic advantage. This spot is so obscure that, in the dim light, Oskar and the rest are unable to locate the targeted area, even with the druid pointing it out, but trust, based on her description of it, that the half-orc will be ideally located in defense of their plans.

This location Strega has identified is still several hundred feet into the clearing, in the wide open, so she knows extreme care and stealthing techniques will be required to reach her point without detection... assuming, of course, anyone or anything is even present to do the detecting.

Tannaris quickly examines the brooch and takes it to be a small silver pin, maybe two inches long, pointed on one end and twisted into a loop on the other. It's simple, and inconspicuous... which, given its intended purpose, is probably ideal.

The elf places it safely in his belt pouch and begins to listen to the others begin to discuss the plan of action.

"I'm gonna need a caravan... some muscle..." Oskar says, indicating Tannaris and Rumble. "... and... he continues, turning to Bren, a dragonborn, "... a dragon expert, to verify the egg is genuine."

"Now, there may be trouble," Oskar continues, securing the sack of fake diamonds to his belt. "If this thing goes sideways, we save each other and destroy the egg, I think... we can't have it fall in the wrong hands, right?"

"A red dragon egg in the wrong hands can be immensely dangerous,"
Bren confirms. "Without knowing the full details of the gestation and incubation period, it'll be difficult to know for sure, but I suspect it will take at least some time to hatch," he adds, while pointing out that keeping such a thing out of the wrong hands is imperative -- potentially including the hands of the hooded figure. "I am hesitant to get involved..." the dragonborn admits, "... but if not us, then who to see it done with justice?"

"You know the most about dragon eggs, so your call."
Oskar says to Bren, nodding in agreement.

"I'll handle the diamonds. You take the egg, and try to inspect. Everyone else, just be ready for anything."

---

Great work, guys! I really appreciate the effort.

So, with the plans in place, are you ready for the approach? If so, I will need everyone to make a Dexterity (Steath) check, please.

The nice thing is, because you're in dim light, the entire area is considered to be lightly obscured, which means Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight will be made at disadvantage. This applies to you guys as well, but for the defenders of the location (e.g. sellers), it will make it more difficult for them to detect you.

Rex, regarding your perception roll, when looking for a spot of cover for Strega, you provided three rolls, including one earmarked for Perception. Naturally, your Perception roll was used for that purpose, but the attempt needed to be made at disadvantage. Since I did not need a Stealth roll (at this time; I will in response to this current update), I took that roll result (e.g. 12) and applied your Perception modifier (e.g. +4) to give you a 16 total; enough to successfully locate the difficult (especially with disadvantage!) spot.

Also, for agreeing to take on this mission, I am going to award you each inspiration, reflected in the footer details below. Regarding inspiration, it does not need to be rolled at the same time as the roll it will be complementing; you're free to consider the result and apply it after the intial roll is made. The only restriction is that it must be made before my next update (e.g. you can see from my details that a roll missed, then attempt to add it).

Oskar

Seeing that we are organized, Oskar sneaks forward to the blind Strega has found...

Stealth [1d20+4] = 1+4 = 5

Ugh, I may want to use my inspiration, but let's see how things play out with everyone else...

As they approach, Oskar will examine the barn. Using his knowledge of how such structures are built, and how this one looks, is there a best way to approach, either in terms of where you can/ can't see out of a barn, or where there might be a back door to let pigs out, or something like that?

Investigation [1d20+4] = 14+4 = 18 if (dis)advantaged: [1d20+4] = 11+4 = 15

This might be perception, which would be 1 higher. Since it's related to wooden construction, it might be advantage. Since it's dark, it might be disadvantage, or they might cancel, so I did two rolls, just in case...

Strega sneaks up as best she can.

Stealth w/inspiration [1d20+2] = 2+2 = 4 [1d20+2] = 19+2 = 21

OOC: No issue with how it was handled Dave, figured better to many then not enough rolls and wasn't sure what I should be rolling against.

Because you're human, without darkvision, your perception check will need to be made at disadvantage because you're in dim light. Because your first roll was a 1, and disadvantage forces you to take the lowest of two rolls... well, that initial 1 kind of seals the deal.

Just an added tidbit:
If you have advantage (e.g. use of inspiration) and disadvantage (e.g. perception check in dim light without darkvision) at the same, the effects just cancel themselves out and you're left with just a normal roll.
