Good question.

That is correct, but the way I read the spell description, it contemplates that natural/corporeal forms only be taken, so things like elementals, spectres, will 'o wisps etc. would not be permitted. Many of these creatures have no mass, so they are "smaller" than a hummingbird and also rely on magic to exist and move -- and the spell does not grant the user the magic abilities of the target, only the physical form.

Make sense?

A frost giant would be permitted, but it weighs over 2000 lbs -- 2800 to be exact.

(I don't have OSRIC in front of me, but do not think the weight changed between editions.)

A female might weight less or a diminutive male could be smaller. So if I say 2000 lb frost giant it should be ok or 2000 lb hummingbird. Does the form have to be factual to the real thing?

Now yer talking...a female or juvenile would certainly work.

Giant or dimunitive forms are permissible.

Lorath still has Charm monster on his ring, but I would like to charm a LT or Capt or above for intel purposes depending on our future plans within the Rift assuming I'm still alive when we get to that.

Even your faithful DM here is caught aback somewhat by the incremental power of the frost giants...though bad rolling has left its mark as well.

As a fan of game, I think a few big moves by the casters are necessary here.

For some reason I thought they weren't all frost giants. Maybe I was just thinking, "Twenty? No way those could all be frost giants!"

Yeah.

It's fireball AOE calculation time!

And this one's tricky. If Vorsyin can target the fireball just right, he can get all the giants to the north and just miss Arqos, Gaerys, and Marcus (and himself and Hollis):

Anything overlapping walls is not included in the AoE calculation. It's just easier to draw as rectangles.
I think aiming for the upper left corner of "16" should just about get the AOE shown. I left the lowest FG out of the area of effect because Gaerys and Arqos should hopefully have it taken care of. Or course, Vorsyin doesn't know that, but he'd hopefully want to keep his allies out of the AOE.

A fireball will make a hell of a mess, though, so it might make sense to draw it back a little more by, say, aiming into the middle of the FGs (right above 16), which should still get the northernmost FG in the group A, G, and M are fighting.

The downside is that this AoE would "only" hit 5 or 6 giants. But I don't see a better fireball option in the near future given V's current line of sight.

Oh, and I wouldn't worry much about doubling flame strike and fireball AoEs. In the steading, we hit a frost giant with a fireball in the great hall, and it still lived. So a fireball is no longer insta-kill. Yay.

Also, it probably goes without saying (or maybe not) that if Vorsyin fires off that fireball, he and Hollis will have to go the long way around to catch up with the rest of the party. Anything marked in red above (and probably near it), it going to be a pool of messy, steamy, rainy sludge for a while.

Another thing---the party has an absurd amount of healing, so I am going to stop feeling sorry for y'all.

We're gonna need it!

It might be a good idea to make sure we keep using our choke points, though. We do not want to let ourselves get surrounded by these things.

I used my only lay hands for the day on myself after the yeti battle so let me see if i had a potion my bad for forgetting to use it. Other than that I would have to rely on the healers in the group. I agree we will need it.

The one that was hurt badly and apparently the only one concerned about it. So far it has not appeared that anyone was really acting like a healer so ... I went commando

Updated!

Does anyone want to roll for Olaf or Marcus?

Sam, Marcus is technically your follower...

Any takers for Olaf? Anyone want to play a second character (it's fine if you only want to play him in combat)?

I am leaning toward calling Karstarks members of the "mountain clan" and applying dwarven racial modifiers to him. He would be a much more powerful character then, and the mechanics would be true to the module.

Anything that makes us more powerful is fine with me. :)

I'd suggest we mount a fighting retreat into the entrance area if possible. It would limit the range from which giants could throw things at us.

My instinct is to have Arqos hold off the remaining giant to the north while Gaerys and Marcus run around to cut off the giants going through the boulder. Or I could do it the other way, having Gaerys fight the giant while Arqos takes on the others. Arqos could probably down a potion of super-heroism on the way.

Thoughts?
