Barrowmaze (LL/AEC)
Re: Barrowmaze (LL/AEC)
Here's the stats for my new character, Bredo. He will be a gnomish illusionist/thief.
Stats: INT:15, CON:14, CHR:9, STR:13, WIS:7, DEX:17

Re: Barrowmaze (LL/AEC)
Ok thanks for that advice!
I've edited the link out of my post, if you could do the same that would be great.
I've also edited the sheet as you suggest.
As you can tell, I'm looking forward to it.

Re: Barrowmaze (LL/AEC)
I'd be interested in playing.
A bit of background: I've never played LL or a PbP game before. I'm a career DM and have been running ACKS for a few months now.
If you don't mind a complete newbie signing on, I'd like to play. If not, I completely understand.
Ideally, I'd like to play a phalanx-style fighter (heavy armor, shield, spear)
Thanks!

Rolls here:
Stats: STR:16, INT:18, WIS:13, DEX:13, CON:14, CHR:12
Think I will arrange these to be an Elven Cleric/Magic-User or maybe a human cleric. Still on the fence.

Re: Barrowmaze (LL/AEC)
If you've played DnD3e or any D20 system, then you are already familiar to the ascending system. In the descending system, no armor is 9 and armor modifies down from there. In the ascending system, no armor is 10 and armor modifies it up from there. In your example, chain mail modifies your AC by 4 either way. In descending, it modifies it down to 5; in ascending, it modifies it up to 14. The shield then modifies it by 1 from there: 4[15] to use the Swords & Wizardry notation (they note it that way as it is up to the GM to decide which system is used.)DMStue wrote:Not having played S&W, how does this work?

I use the ascending system because, at 1st level for ALL characters, the base to hit is the same as the AC you are trying to hit. If you are trying to hit an AC of 4 in the descending system, you would need a 15 before any modifiers. As you advance in levels, you will get an attack bonus (in DnD3e it is called BAB - Base Attack Bonus). This will be the same bonus you would receive in the descending system.
Re: Barrowmaze (LL/AEC)
Thanks for the clarification .... Baring in mind Thieves can wear only leather and can not carry a shield, that gives me a grand AC of 12! *gulp*
So I guess now is the time to ask whether you will be using the Optional HD rule on page 21 of the AEC?

Don't forget your Dex modifier; not that it is a great improvement, but it does raise your AC to 13. And yes, I will be using the Optional HD rule. Thank you for reminding me.
Re: Barrowmaze (LL/AEC)
Woot! 6hp looks so much better than 4hp
Hmmm ... Not sure about the AC ...
If Unarmoured = 9 [10], and Leather = 8 and my DEX bonus = -1 doesn't this make my AC 12?

In the ascending AC method, the DEX bonus is a plus, not a minus.DMStue wrote:Woot! 6hp looks so much better than 4hp

So leather armour is AC 8[12]. Leather plus DEX is AC 7[13].

Pyrrhic, Battlefield Tactician reporting for duty!
Stats: STR:14, CHR:15, DEX:9, INT:6, CON:15, WIS:7
Are we allowed to start with hirelings, or should we get them through play? (or does LL not let you have hirelings at level 1?)
Working Character Sheet:
I still have a little bit of shopping to do.

Do you have room for one more? I'm always the GM and never the player in these things, but I'd like to try.

Re: Barrowmaze (LL/AEC)
Ain't that the truth. And I thought I was being nice by doing 4d6 drop the lowest and if the total mod is 0 or negative, roll again. Well, its not as bad as some DCC characters I've seen. Multiple 0-level characters with 3d6 stats run through the funnel to decide which character you end up playing.hedgeknight wrote:I love those old school random stat rolls!

Re: Barrowmaze (LL/AEC)
I really like old-style stats. Coming from a 3.x background, my players and I really got into how "important" stats are, and how 14/16 was a "mandatory minimum" for your trope. With how small of a range the modifier table in B/X is, it seems like stats matter less, and at the same time there is a significant difference between a 10 and 16 [+0 and +2, respectively)ybn1197 wrote:Ain't that the truth. This is a game about killing things and taking their stuff so you can become more powerful in order to kill bigger things and take even better stuff.

One thing I noticed about this ( as I'm also a new forum member ), when you approve the posts, they get put in sequence where they were originally posted, so they are easy to overlook if you've already read past that part when the post gets approved.rredmond wrote:Just approved this post. I'm including my first post here, for a bit more GM visibility ( and a second chance to tell me to take a hike

I will take anyone and everyone who are interested in playing in this game. If I have to, I will have two separate groups running through it, I am that enthusiastic about running this game.

Re: Barrowmaze (LL/AEC)
How are we doing spell selection for magic-users?
Re: Barrowmaze (LL/AEC)
Thanks. I'll get a character together as soon as I can get approved for the dice-roller.ybn1197 wrote:I will take anyone and everyone who are interested in playing in this game. If I have to, I will have two separate groups running through it, I am that enthusiastic about running this game.
