As Ingulfr says this, the air ripples, and the assorted gear begins to bob closer to him. There's a squelching sound, and Ingulfr realizes that the room isn't empty at all. The far half of the room seems to be filled with some sort of mostly transparent goo, and the goo is drawing closer.

Ingulfr

Does he know what a gelatinous cube is?

Ingulfr attacks it with his torch. "Help, its attacking me!"

Torch attack [1d20]=5 to hit [1d4]=3 damage

Intelligence check 1d20 <= 10: 9 <= 10, yes. He knows what a gelatinous cube is, and that it isn't especially harmed by, but is slowed by extremely low temperatures. He also knows that they slide through the dungeon, absorbing anything they slide over and dissolving organic material for food. He knows that their bodies are filled with a substance that paralyzes at a touch.

And we are in initiative! I need action declarations from everyone else.

The party is at the moment roughly clumped up where the P is. I will allow people to decide where exactly in the room they may have dispersed to while Ingulfr was peeking into the next room.

Hektor and Tulius

Ingulfr is already in melee, right? Which means we cannot throw missiles or oil at the creature - am I correct?

That is correct. You can try a ranged attack, but the target is determined randomly, so you might strike Ingulfr. And even if you strike the cube with flaming Ingulfr might be hit by splash damage.

Hektor and Tulius

Gotcha!

Tulius advances without hesitation - not knowing if his weapon will do anything to the creature, he still swings valiantly!

I gave him a light mace, but... are Heavy Maces also 1h? If so I would prefer one of those.
Right behind him comes Hektor, thrusting forward with his spear from the second line!

Iacchus also takes a mace attack!
[1d20]=2 [1d6]=2
Oofa! Assuming it's 1d6 and not +1, GC is size Large, yeah? (I mean I know it doesn't matter with that TH roll :D )

Martin steps back to take in the situation. He's loathe to use his MM or web spell at this point, but will if things go south!

Initiative:
Team: 4
Monster: 1
Team wins initiative

Tulius charges in and swings his mace at the gelatinous cube while Ingulfr swings his torch as the cube advances, and the cube shrinks away from the flames. Its sudden cringing means Tulius' mace comes just short, and Ingulfr's torch too strikes only air. On the other hand, the cube fails to find an opening to strike either of them.

Hektor and Iacchus approach carefully. However, Tulius and Ingulfr are standing at the archway, while the cube stands in the short, 10-foot corridor between the two rooms. The reach of Hektor's spear means he will probably be able to thrust past his companions, but Iacchus cannot reach the cube.

Martin remains where he is, watching carefully but not yet ready to commit one of his spells. Seeing that they can't reach the cube, and not daring to risk trying to shoot or throw into the melee, Ulfric, Randall and Anker spread out to the edges of the room, from which they can move in if they need to, without blocking any retreat from their allies.

Everyone missed, including the gelatinous cube 1d20 = 3, miss.

Martin has a torch as well, I think. If so can he reach in from behind? Not swinging the torch, just poking it in? :)

If not can he toss some oil up on top of the Cube? Since it’s so big and all :beg:

Not on top. The cube fills the corridor it's in wall-to-wall and floor-to-ceiling. But! Since the cube takes up the entirety of the hallway it's in, you don't really need to aim either. Just throw over your allies' head. Plus, gelatinous cubes tend to absorb things that strike them. So I think in this particular case here is what I'll say. Missile weapons can be fired safely (since there's no aiming, just shoot above your allies). A successful hit from flaming oil means the cube absorbs it, in which case it takes damage inside, but none of the splash strikes anybody else. A miss means it bounces off the cube. If the attack roll <= 5, it bounces off the cube, lands at your allies' feet and bad things happen. If the attack roll > 5, but still misses, then the oil bounces off hard enough for it to land harmlessly somewhere in the room behind the front line.

Martin lights up a flask of oil and tosses it at the gelatinous creature!

[1d20]=20

Well isn't that neato!! Let me know if something needs to change :) I'm good as long as I get to keep the roll for the throw!

The team presses their advantage, while the cube is on its backfoot (so to speak)
from Ingulfr's torch. The cube's flexible body collapses and rolls around the
torch, evading Ingulfr's swing and Tulius' mace.

But all the swirling in the world doesn't protect it from a direct, deep thrust
of Hektor's spear, the sharpened tip driving into the cube. Hektor's spear sticks
fast, but after a bit of tugging and grunting, Hektor is able to rip it free,
tearing great swaths of gooey slime from the cube.

Twin arrows and a stone arc over the group's head, burying themselves in the
cube, followed closely behind by a flaming flask of oil. The oil lands in the
gash recently ripped open by the spear right as the cube closes back over it.
The flask shatters under the pressure, and flames burst free of the cube's surface.
They race along the edges, burning it down into a still puddle. The scraps of
equipment floating inside it fall to the ground with an echoing clatter.

-----

Initiative:
players: 5
cube: 4

Players win initiative.

Ingulfr misses.
Ulfr takes advantage of the fact that the cube fills up the
entire corridor (and thus he just needs to aim above his allies)
and whips a sling stone at the cube.
1d20 = 5, miss
Tulius misses
Hektor hits for 6 damage
Martin throws a flask
1d20 = 20, hit. Absorbed by the cube.
damage: 2d6 = 6 damage this round, 1d6 next round
Randall fires a sling: 1d20 = 19, hit, damage = 2
Anker firing shortbow. 2x 1d20 = 16, 18. Damage: Doesn't matter, it's dead.

Quick note: @Edeldhur, should have rolled 1d8 rather than
1d6 for Hektor's damage. Spears are 1d8 against large, and the
cube is large. I'll use your roll as is, but bear that in mind
for the future.

The team gets 210/8 = 26.25 XP, round up to 27. Henchmen get half, so 8.5, rounded up to
9 XP.

He starts working on cleaning everything up.

As Ingulfr recovers the items, both Hektor and Tulius keep watch, one peering toward where the cube came from, and the other watching at their back.

We are still going with two torches?
Martin will light a second torch, if needed. And keep an eye out for things that might be coming up from the rear.

Torch: 60 minutes (Martin, fresh torch)
Torch: 55 minutes (Ingulfr)

Ingulfr and Ulfr take a moment to wipe off the gear and study it. They find a suit of chainmail, worn clean by the cube's digestion but apparently undamaged, a spearhead, five arrows (one of which looks to be especially well made), 40 gold pieces, and a gem.
