The Island of Death, The Underground City, Beneath the Great Pyramid of Xuthalhotep
Lost City of Khemsa, Forgotten Kingdom of Verulia, Great Eastern Desert, the World of Hyboria
Day Ten. Midday?, 23rd day of the month of Yuluk, 1279th year of the Age of Aquilonia

The explorers dock the Dark Ship in the frightful alien harbor of the Island of Death.

The looming primeval pylons embody a blasphemous geometry that evokes half-glimpses of other spaces, other dimensions. The shadows too are wrong and disconcerting, as if cast by towers unseen. The adventurers are disoriented to the point of nausea.

Xorzen stares in disbelief, to no avail. There is no movement nor sound, and the air is rank with an indescribable stench.

By the sickly fungal illumination, they see no path but the devil's causeway. Its stones worn smooth from countless human sacrifices being carried across them, it leads them into the deepest regions of the cavern, and then on into the unsettling ruins that seemingly violate all natural law.

Grotesque and oppressive stone structures bear pictoglyphs from across gulfs of time without measure.

Pools of stagnant water gather everywhere.

The path ends at a towering stair that leads up into a doorway of stygian darkness.

Before it and to the left, a blight of strange black vines flourish. Within them lies a grisly sight.

Four pale dead bodies in various states of decomposition are woven into the ebon stalks that pin them against a crumbling wall. (at the X's) The loathsome vines have wormed their way inside the bodies’ eyes, ears, mouths, and open wounds. In horror, the adventurers suddenly realize the corpses are still moving!

Zahra
The pale green Amazon looks at the victims in their vines and shudders. She looks at the vines, and the area around the bodies. How close can she approach to the bodies without touching the vines?

Amethu stares at the four lost souls forever trapped in the hellish prison. He says a quiet prayer to Uthoth that they are successful in this likely final stage of their impossible journey.

Xorxen keeps his distance from the writhing dead, instead looking for a tall rock or a broken pilar he can climb to get a birds eye view of this stairway area.

We should end the suffering of these unfortunates, says Garrin. If no one disagrees, he plunges his sword into the throat and up into the skull of the first one.

Loche

Seeing the victims of the vines, Loche instinctively veers to the right, giving the vines a wi-i-ide berth- until he heats Xorxen say the word "ambush." He tries to maintain a path between the two, his head on a swivel as he watches for the ambush he fully expects is about to happen.

Cruloc

Cruloc catches Garrin's sword arm in a vice grip.

"Mercy is death here. Be not deceived by this carnival puppetry. Their bodies move, but their spirits are gone. If your god commands you to join them, you do so alone."

He releases the paladin and moves back warily.

Tjoruy watches in horror as the corpses writhe, but he does not yet believe the dead themselves are animated.

"Osorus has filled Xorxen with light and truth! The Dark One thrives on ambush."

"Keep your wits about you" he adds, the irony lost on him. Tjoruy will keep watch behind and to the party's right, watching for any other threats that may arise.

The Island of Death, The Underground City, Beneath the Great Pyramid of Xuthalhotep
Lost City of Khemsa, Forgotten Kingdom of Verulia, Great Eastern Desert, the World of Hyboria
Day Ten. Afternoon?, 23rd day of the month of Yuluk, 1279th year of the Age of Aquilonia

On the blasphemous island under the earth, Amethu prays for the poor wretched souls woven into the black vines. Zahra estimates she might tread within five feet of the moving, rotting dead without touching the thick blight of strange subterranean growth.

The adventurers bare steel and watch, awaiting an imminent ambush of the degenerate beastmen of Zargoth from any direction!

Xorzen scales a strangely angled, crumbling obelisk to better survey the great towering stair that leads into the black abyss of desolate eternities.

The monk of Osorus spies neither light nor movement.

Garrin the paladin moves to mercifully end the suffering of the corpses in the vines but Cruloc the barbarian seizes his sword arm and counsels against pity in this place of horror and madness.

Suddenly, the black creepers release themselves from the ageless wall, freeing the vine-filled corpses to lurch forward in a ghastly mockery of human movement!

Image

As the dead stagger from the insidious tangle of black growth, the adventurers realize in horror that not all of them are entirely human! And that the evil vines writhe and thrash as if with a mind of their own!

Cruloc disagreed, so this if-then action was not taken.

The wary PCs are not 'surprised.'

Loche

Juist pumpin' stoatin! How come amen't a surprised? The Pict moves ahead just enough to get a clear bead on one of the shambling things (x4) before letting loose with his sling.

Tjoruy assumes these corpses are not animated by some dark spirit, but by the vines themselves. And if these writhing vines can animate corpses, they surely can grasp live bodies. He will hold his attack to see if vines grab his companions...if they do, he will swing at the vines to free them. If not, he will attack an animated corpse.

Mace of the Old Kingdom attack [1d20+2] = 8+2 = 10 damage [1d6+3] = 1+3 = 4

Xorxen fires his back-up weapon at one of the oncoming threats that isn't engaged with one of his friends.

Javalin Attack [1d20+1] = 20+1 = 21 Damage [1d6+2] = 5+2 = 7

Cruloc

Charging attack w/ longsword [1d20+4] = 3+4 = 7

Unable to get his land legs under him, Cruloc swings wide yet again.

"Crom! Let me hit something!" he curses.

Amethu will attack with his staff if the opportunity presents itself.

To Hit (THACO 20): [1d20+2] = 15+2 = 17

Staff of Uthoth - Damage: = S/M/L: [1d6+2] = 1+2 = 3
