Changing of the Tides
Round 4

Luther, Wes, Chauncey, Saracen, Raythan, and Brufrig all tumble around on the deck some more after the second collision. Wes flounders around badly, eventually falling towards the she elf that is still tied to the mast. She attempts to convince him to go down into the water to do a little fishing, which he quickly and firmly declines. He then points towards the huge fighter Monocar, who has just armed himself with a long pole that has a gaff hook attached to it. The big brute heads to the battered rail with his gaff, hoping to do a little fishing for himself.

The handsome halfling is not afraid in the least to go down below deck with the others, even with the huge beasts smashing themselves into the hull. The inside of the ship is also a scene of total chaos with bodies scrambling around everywhere. There are a few bunks spread around and a tiny galley with minimal furnishings, but nothing worth stealing immediately jumps out to the thief. There is a huge rent in the hull on the port side where water continuously pours into the vessel. There are at least a dozen commoners there, all of them are bailing buckets of water off of the floor of the ship and tossing them out of a small porthole. A tiny male gnome is down there as well, tearing through the pots and pans of the galley. Lightfinger is pretty sure that he hasn’t seen this young fellow on the ship yet until just now.

Jack is having a ball during this whole event, yelling out sailing clichés the whole time. Despite being a little annoying, he has a blast demonstrating his impressive prowess with a bow. He continues plunking the oncoming fish with arrows along with the other crew and passengers who are still able to fire.

One of the first pair of creatures begins to fall behind the other. Eventually tiring of the many pokes it is taking, it slowly begins swimming away. It leaves a trail of crimson in its impressively large wake. That leaves only 2 creatures remaining to hunt the ship. The first monster is just about to bash into the ship again, despite the many arrows and bolts already sticking out of it.

Lightfinger

The diminutive Thief heads toward the Gnome, but not too close. Hey! Nothing good down here? He belts out in the Gnomish tongue, You do notice the gaping fissure in the hull, the one with the ocean pouring in, right? I think UP would be the single smartest direction to go at the moment! If we get underfoot we'll likely never make it topside. If it is noticed we are pillaging in a time of distress, topside won't help us!

Brufrig Granitesunder

Having been knocked off his feet twice already, the dwarf is not willing to risk a third chance to get sent overboard. Removing the rope from his pack, he quickly loops it around the railing, wrapping it around himself as well to tie himself fast to the rail.

Monocar Jemara

Moving to the rail he loops his leg around one of the rail posts in an effort to hold himself somewhat stable at impact, planting his other foot firmly behind him as he readies the gaff for a downward stroke on one of the creatures when it nears. "Anyone that has a line or something to lash me to this rail would be appreciated!" That said he looks out over the water and takes a deep breath focusing on his onrushing target. "Here fishy, fishy, fishy...." he says to himself as he prepares to wack one on the head with the big hook.

Wes

Wes returns to the rail and decides to try and use his magic to distract the bluntskulls and buy some time for the defenders of the Twisted Fate. He focusses clearly on the message he wishes to send and casts Speak With Animals, declaiming loudly:

"Oh Great and Noble creatures of the deep! Blessings of Obad-Hai be upon you! Why do you assault our vessel? If we have transgressed on your territory, we are sorry! We did not know. Perhaps you can lead us away from here, in peace and friendship?"

Jack, lost boy:

Having the time of his long life, young Jack laughs as he fires more perfect bullseyes, and clever witticisms (or so he believes), at the monstrous dragons of the high seas, "Ha ha ha! En garde! Touche! Take that! Yay!"

Jack: Arrows: to hit: [1d20+4] = 20+4 = 24, [1d20+4] = 8+4 = 12, damage: [1d6] = 3, [1d6] = 2 A natural 20. :)

Miss Tal'

'US Beauregarde' casts a loop around the waist of Monacar, in place of the druid, tying him to the rope and one end attached to the mast. With only a 50'ft rope he is probably near the end of it dangling like a man descending an abseil only going face first over the water.

Leaving him suspended, Krystal runs through the open cabin doors and descends to the galley dodging pales of water and the havoc of the boat leaking. Amidst the mayhem she spies the little gnome fellow in the galley and Lightfinger. "I need some chunks of meat or fish, from the galley stores, to stick on the end of the grapnel and we can hook a blunthead shark up."

Chauncey the Adequate

Loathe to release any of his darts and wondering where he'll ever be able to find replacements on a sparsely inhabited island, Chauncey nevertheless deems dartlessness a better alternative to lifelessness. Wrapping one arm tightly around the railing or some netting or, you know, ship rope, with the other he plucks three darts from his bandolier and hurls them in quick succession at the approaching shape, aiming for the blowhole or dorsal fin, whatever it takes: "Take that, you... oh! ...goodness, my bad, pardon me."

The little fellow, big for a gnome but still little compared to all those hurrying in panic beside him, (except for the littler Littlefinger of course), stands upright on top off a bucket and peers over the galley counter and tables. He is busy passing even the smallest of saucepans to big hands to bail sea water through the portholes.

"Well don't just stand there do something useful!" he says to the Halfling, sure he just accused him of raiding the cupboards. In the cupboards he does look in fact and through the salt barrels. Grabbing any tail fins, fish heads, tuna chunks (in brine) and a jellied eel, he fills a pale. "That one is holed so no good for bailing water, good enough for these fish bits though. Take them to young Missy then."

Then young Ferris goes about raiding the cupboards, this time ripping the doors off to pass to folk hammering boards over the splintered hull.

LIE Down if you can! Hold onto the folks around you! We can get through this if we work together!

Luther is shouting this stuff to the crowd in general, trying to boost the settler's morale while he recovers his footing enough to use his bow.

Gone Fishing
Round 5

Saracen, Luther, and Brufrig all have to pick themselves up off of the deck for the second time. The dwarf finally grows tired of the constant battering so he decides to lash himself to the railing before the next collision. Luther shouts out for the others to group up together to prevent anyone else from going overboard. Miss Tal just shakes her head at Wes’s wisdom and decides to peg another for her idea. She commands her invisible helper to tie the rope around the giant Monocar this time instead……which he agrees to almost instantly……naturally. He flops over the railing painfully with his gaff at the ready as the pretty elf rushes towards the lower decks to find him some shark bait. The captain’s eyes grow as big as saucers at this action. He seems very concerned about his 10 foot gaff hook.

Amidst the chaos in the galley, the halfling and the gnome become acquainted. Lightfinger suggests that the tiny pair get themselves topside before they are crushed in the confusion of all the longshank bodies flying around in the cramped quarters. Ferris knows his way around the bowels of the ship and isn’t willing to abandon his position as cooks helper. He tosses the she elf some fish heads that he was saving for tonight’s stew and begins tearing off cupboard doors to use as makeshift hull patches. The little fellow grabs up a hammer and some thick nails, along with a pail of black pitch. He uses his crafting skills to start on the repairs while the others continue to bail out water.

Wes stands at the rail chanting and waving his arms around frantically. He begins making odd squeaking and clicking noises very loudly in yet another incredibly bizarre scene. Just as the beast is about to bash into the hull again, it stops its advance right at the side of the boat and looks up at the druid with a hint of understanding in its dark eyes. This leaves the door open for the others to fly into action. Chauncey, Raythan, Jack, and Monocar all assail the creature without mercy, shooting, sizzling, darting, and hooking the thing to death right in front of the on looking druid.

The ship quickly begins to pull away from the upturned, bloody, arrow ridden carcass as Wes looks on in horror. The remaining creature sees that it is now the only one left in the fight so it decides better than to continue attacking the ship all alone. It begins to veer off of its original course and turns around to devour its dead pod mate. The captain and crew all burst out in a raucous celebration of shouting and jumping around, possibly indicating just how serious the situation was getting. They soon regain their composure and get down to business of getting the rent in the hull repaired so they can still reach their destination.

The cap'n is eventually going to make a little speech, but I thought I would give everyone a little time to respond to the last turn of events in character first if they want to.

Jack, lost boy:

Jack nimbly climbs down among all the big, lumbering, clumsy grownups who are struggling to pull themselves up off the deck.
He helps one up and smiles, "That was fun! Can we do it again?"

Brufrig Granitesunder

The dwarf removes the rope he had tied around himself, coiling it and returning to its location on his back pack. Don't know why he didn't just talk to them earlier. Save us all a lot of hassle. Nature priests! he mutters, shaking his head.

Wes

Wes looks on in dismay as the great beast meets its end. As a druid, he is loathe to use a human word like tragic to describe the death of an animal following its instincts. It was simply the way of things: the prey does not meekly walk into the jaws of death, and the predator does not always escape unharmed.

What perturbs Wes more is the knowledge that all of this death and destruction could have been avoided if he had but tried to speak to the animals sooner. Instead, at the crucial point, his faith in the power of Obad-Hai had wavered: he had doubted that his feeble magic would work on the minds of such creatures. "Forgive me, O Shalm. I am humbled by my error and doubt. I shall learn from this, and draw strength for the future."

Wes stands for a few moments longer at the rail, gazing at the corpse of the creature receding in their wake, then turns and joins the other folk on deck.

Ah! His nose wrinkled from the smell of chum, I present you with supper, lovely Miss! Tho I'd much rather... The Hobbit's eyes wander upward, noticing the silence followed by cheers. What just happened? He begins scrambling his way back topside to satisfy his natural curiosity.

Monocar Jerama

"Yay... wonderful.... I'm still down here you know....... Anybody...? No...? okay... I'll just hang around............" He hangs over the side of the ship like a worm on a hook still holding the bloody gaff. While he dangles and twist in the air he looks over the hull to see what kind of damage there is and takes stock of what kind of proper work and materials are needed or a repair.
