Rhys the Traveler

"The funny thing about picking up rumors in bars is that they aren't always true. I can't speak for the ogres, but Aquar and I have seen the immediate impact of these marauding orcs when we came across a merchant wagon near the logging camp that had been attacked. They are a very real threat and I agree ridding the lands of these orcs should be our priority."

He turns to the new priest and adds, "Anohir, you are welcome to join us on this task. Surely doing good for the people is the best way to spread the good message of your church."

Once the coin is divided evenly, Rhys will immediately head to his friendly jeweler and exchange most of his coin for gemstones.
1600gp minus 10% exchange fee = 1440gp

2 black pearls @ 500 gp value each
4 garnets @ 100 gp value each
4 agates @ 10 gp value each

Character sheet inventory updated.
After that, he will wait at the inn for the others to complete whatever tasks they still have to do (study, training, whatever). He would like to head out to find the orcs as soon as possible.

Mursley, MU

Mursley agrees that tackling these orcs is a priority, making the area safe for everybody, themselves included. He also agrees that we should leave once Thurgan has completed his sword training.
While we wait Mursley will continue to study Magic Missile at the guild. If he is successful, and has time, he will then start on Mirror Image. I was planning to go with Invisibility as his first 2nd level spell, but I've come to the conclusion that Mirror Image will improve his survivability more.

To the extent possible, Severi is also studying MM, although he'll rely on sleep for the run against the orcs. Depending on how long the sword training takes, he may or may not get a check before we leave.

Yarthmont 4, AC 1000

On their first full day back from the wraith's tomb the adventurers pursue their own various agendas. Mursley and Severi pore over Gan's spellbook together, both seeking to memorize the spell that summons an enchanted arrow. Severi, fearful of being unable to learn the spell, takes extra time in practice. Mursley wades into his lessons with gusto, and by the end of the day has mastered the spell!

Thurgan asks around for an instructor, and is directed that there is none better in Threshold than one Black Kate, a member of the city guard and former gladiator in the Thyatian fighting pits. He approaches the weaponsmaster, who contrary to expectation is fair of skin ("the black is for my heart, or so say the men I've beaten"). She charges two hundred gold for a day's lesson, and either Thurgan picks up martial skills with ease or she is as good as she claims, for at the end of the day Thurgan finds himself passable with a sword.
Unless shaidar has an issue with it, we can assume Mursley allows Severi to study MM from his spellbook whilst the mage studies Invisibility in Gan's.

Aquar, cleric

"I recall hearing that more than thirty orcs fell upon a caravan. We'll need to be prepared to take on such numbers. Perhaps get the Baron to lend us us some soldiers, who can hide in a caravan wagon and lend us extra swords in a surprise trap for the orces," says Aquar.
I prefer not to have hirelings, but if we happen to face 30 at once we would be hard-pressed to survive. Hunting around for their base or doing guerilla tactics is an alternate approach.

I'm not opposed to hirelings; I'd prefer to not have any henchmen in the party, unless there is some justification (aside from "because I want one") for it. I'd like to avoid an XP stealer if possible, but I CAN be reasonable if the need is legitimate! :)

I agree guerrilla tactics are the technique du jour when the main course is 30+ orcs.

Rhys the Traveler

Rhys spends his time trying to gather up as much information/rumors about the orcs as he can, specifically seeking first-hand knowledge when possible. He is happy to spend 100 gp throughout the day, in exchange for good intel.

Thurgan spends 100gp in carousing to celebrate his new found skill with a sword.

The rest of his money is banked with the moneylenders guild.

Yarthmon 4, AC 1000

Rhys, Aquar and Anohir spend the day tracking down information on the orcish attackers. It appears that they have struck an additional three times since the initial attack. Only on the second attack was the caravan utterly destroyed; the guards were successful in driving off the orcs the other three times, though not without loss of life or destruction of property. Of the caravans attacked, only one originated from Threshold; the others were traveling south from Darokin.

The companions run into the Ranger, Ronrol, who tells them that the Baron sends out semi-regular patrols up and down the Duke's Road, but they have never encountered an orcish ambush. Likewise, they have taken to accompanying the odd caravan some distance north in the hopes of intercepting a raid, without luck. Ronrol opines that it is unlikely the Baron will agree to spare any of his troops. "You didn't hear it from me," he says, "but me and a bunch of the boys are getting ready to head east, see what we can find out about this cleric Elwyn." He does admit to having done a bit of poking around himself, back when the first caravan was attacked, and seemed convinced the orcs don't actually live that close to the Duke's Road. "There's no good caves nearby -- not within a few miles, nohow -- and there's no way a tribe or orcs that size can live somewhere without despoiling a good bit of land around their lair. It's just in their nature. There's some hills north of Lake Windrush, pretty barren and empty, mostly. My guess is they lair in there, somewhere, and have started ranging east for some reason. I haven't been up there in a while, but there's a trail leads from the Duke's Road to some Elven village, passes through those hills. There some more settlements in the mountains up there, too. Those boys you used to adventure with opened up the trail north for us, so we've been doing some pretty good trade with them. Could be the caravans stopped going west through the hills, and the orcs have had to expand their range.

The companions also find that the merchant heading the latest caravan to be attacked is still in town. He is a dour man of Darokin origin, with fat, beringed fingers and an oiled mustache. He asks what information the adventurers desire of him.
Ronrol indicates he belief that the orcs may be lairing somewhere in the blank section of the map, directly north of Threshold. The map can be found here: viewtopic.php?p=35909#p35909

Blank as in white? So, north of the mountains?

Does Rhys know what any of the things are at the following coordinates?
38.10 - ??
46.18 - ??
48.17 - ??

It seems like 38.10 would be the tower the earlier party was working on clearing out. Did Rhys join up in Jessup? Or was it at the village at 46.18? Either way, I think he would at least have some idea of where the tower was and what they'd been doing there during casual party conversation...

Then I've updated the key below the map with additional information.

I don't suppose you'll let me know if that is accurate? ;)

Rhys the Traveler

Rhys shows the merchant the rough map of the area and asks him to point to about where they were attacked.

"If we are to stop them, we need all of the information we can get. So we need to know how many there were, what time of the day it was when they attacked, what tactics they used. Anything you can think of that would be helpful. And..." he pauses, "if you have anything... useful... you might be willing to part with - potions, items with magical powers - we would be interested in hearing your price."

Map labeling looks good, Al.

Master Riswerd, Merchant

The trader looks at the map and points with a fat finger. "I think they struck about here; the forest runs pretty close to the trail in this section and they came at us out of the trees early evening. Good thing for us one of my guards was taking a piss off the trail and happened to be looking right at him, or they would have caught us completely unawares. We lost two men, another half dozen or so got some minor wounds that they patched up at the temple, probably killed six or so orcs. They took off after some fighting, heading west."

Riswerd seems affronted at the very notion of paying the adventurers, either in coin or supplies. "The Baron's the one supposed to be keeping these roads cleared. Go talk to him about payment, not me!"

Master Riswerd

"Ah!", as he nods appreciately, chins wobbling, "I had assumed as adventurers you would be looking free handouts. But I am afraid I am but a humble wine, silk and opal merchant. I have no dweomered items to sell."
