IC XI

Flaurmont 22-29

Upon returning to Threshold the bulk of the companions decide to seek their fortunes in distant lands, leaving Aquar and Rhys as the only members of the party. Luckily, both have practiced with their chosen weapons for long enough that a period of intensive training would be of great benefit to them, so they decide to spend their time practicing in the hopes of improving their combat prowess. Over the course of the week both achieve the insights they had hoped for, Aquar more quickly than Rhys.

During that time they become acquainted with two other adventurous souls -- an elf named Severi the Silvertongue and a dwarf named Thurgan. By this time, the party reasons, Myraal must surely have finished identifying the items that were last left with him.

Severi has taken great enjoyment from sitting on a nearby stump and watching Rhys and Aquar practice their weapons.

"So. I have told you of the tower that I heard rumor of. But where I have only a rumor, you have seen this strange stone door with your own eyes. If we can put together strong arms enough to pry it open, I think it worth an attempt."

Rhys nods, "Aye, we'll need a bit more muscle to force that door, I reckon. You know anyone who might need the work? In the mean time, we can go visit Myraal and pick up the rest of our gear..."

As soon as Rhys completes his training the companions saddle up and ride the short distance north to visit Myraal in his tower. The adventurers are welcomed in, and the mage has their possessions in a tidy pile on his massive oaken table. "The spear and plate armor are both of dwarven make, but meant for a human. This rune right here," he points to a three glyphs inscribed at the base of the spearhead, "tells me it was forged by one Glofu the stout, the next tells me it was forged roughly three hundred years ago in the reign of the dwarvish jarl Dogad, and that it was forged for one Vasilyevich. Clearly a Traladaran, but I know nothing more of him. The spear is named Ubiysta, the plate Zashchitnik."

He then lifts the Alphatian sword from the pile. "I have discovered the purpose of this wire. There are forms of magic in this world that require a sacrifice; this is one such type. At the beginning of each day, the first time this blade is drawn, one should prick their sword hand with the tip of the wire. The blood drawn will attune weapon and wielder, and you will find that the wrapping ceases to interfere with your use of the weapon. In addition, the power of the blade may be called upon to enhance the wielder's speed and dexterity, but only for a limited time."

He brings forth the three glass vials. "These are potions. The first enables the drinker to camouflage himself and his belongings into the background, the second will heal the drinker of minor wounds and injuries and the third will allow he who consumes it to breath water for a given period of time."

"This box required me to cast my spell of opening twice; it is a tricky lock, likely made in Minrothad, and has a set combination that cannot be changed." He demonstrates the order in which the studs must be pressed. He cracks open the lid and spills the contents onto the table. Eight glimmering opals roll out on the surface, seemingly lit by an inner fire. "These are undoubtedly worth one thousand gold a piece," the mage ventures.

When "blooded" the wielder may choose to use the power of the sword. For four rounds the wielder has his Dexterity increased to 18 and his base speed increased by 10'. It takes one round of concentration to initiate the power of the sword, and the four rounds can be used all at once or broken up into discrete increments. The power can be ended as desired without spending any actions.

The potions are Blending, Healing and Water Breathing.

"Thank you for all of your hard work, Myraal," Rhys says as he gathers the box, sword, and spear up from the table.

Before he leaves, Rhys reaches into his pack and pulls out a piece of parchment paper and continues, "One last thing, Myraal. We found an ancient doorway in a hillside when we were hunting the great cat. It did not appear to be magically sealed in any way, but it did have this inscription around the doorframe. Can you tell us what it says?"
Rhys is just picking stuff up to carry. Who gets what can be determined later. The only thing he would rather not carry is any kind of armour or shield; he takes his vows very seriously.

Myraal peruses the parchment. "Why," he exclaims with excitement, "I believe you may have discovered the final resting place of Blego the Bloated, a prince from Traladar's prehistory! This script is a sort of proto-Traladaran, and dates to the time before Halav, when this region was supposedly ruled by some sort of beastmen." Myraal's eyes gleam. "As a student of Traladar's past I would be most interested in any relics you uncover, and would recompense you accordingly."

"Was Blego one of these beastmen? What can you tell us about him?" Rhys asks, his curiosity peaked.
While he is curious about the history, I'm not so sure how Rhys feels about grave robbing just for the purpose of grave robbing...

I think it's worth our while to make an examination of his grave goods. They can do him no good, and may be to the profit of those who still must eat, drink, and toil below the sun. To wit: us."

Maybe Rhys should think of it as wealth redistribution as opposed to grave robbery.

Hahaha... sorry, won't comment on the term 'wealth redistribution' on this forum. I'll figure out something, though. ;)

"Aquar shut up!" Aquar was training with one of Threshold's better hammer masters, an intense bearded man who was a former gladiator. "You swing as well as you chatter."

"Never lose focus! Not even if Athena herself were to rip open the heavens and dangle her teats from the sky!"

The training session over, Aquar wipes the sweat from his brow and tells his new friend, sitting nearby:  "Aye Severi, the stone door seems a mystery worth plumbing."

The cleric looks up to the sky, ever hopeful.

Later, in the tower of Myraal the Magician, Aquar marvels at the mage's mystic identifications.

"My my, the potion of water breathing is sacred to my particular religion. That of Procan, god of the seas."

"My sect forbids use of bladed weapons, and though I possess divine magics I am unable to comprehend arcane dweomers."

The next night Aquar blesses the barrels, again, at the The Elemental Plane of Beer tavern. He is looking forward to getting underway In Search of Adventure.

"Though a sword is not my favoured weapon I feel the need to improve my handling of weapons and I would look to take it".

Guildmaster's Tower

As the adventurers prepare to leave to return to Threshold Myraal introduces them to a muscular mage named Mursley, who professes a desire to join their band. Thus, bearing puissant arms and one member stronger, the group returns to Threshold. Determined to set off for the Traladaran tomb the next day they sell what items they are determined not ro keep. The cat's head fetches 400 gold, the pelt 75; a buyer is found for the cunning box -- a haughty Thurston immigrant offers one hundred gold for it.
Assuming those prices work, the party nets 8575 gp. That works out to 1715 a PC in both gold and XP (before Ability modifiers).

Possible for Rhys to retain an opal and take most of his remaining share of the gold in the form of the platinum? Might be a good time, as well, to point out the bank function in your game, TK.

Aquar turns to Rhys and quietly says, "Such heavy coin burdens travel. Seek us the money changer to switch riches. Platinum and gem will make our step lighter."

Severi is clearly not a morning person, but daylight finds him brushing down his black-dappled horse, Pepper, and ensuring that all of his equipment is packed correctly. "How far from here does the door lay, and will there be other way-stations along the road? I want to know if a week of rations is sufficient, or if I should carry more supplies."

Aquar, cleric

Before leaving, Aquar is feeling pious and visits the Church.

"I bear donation," says the priest of Procan. "I have 888 gold pieces to give. Perhaps the funds can help feed the poor, or educate urchins. Let it be known that the monies were donated by the Free Fighting Fellowship."

Aquar keeps the remaining half of his money. He privately dreams of establishing a chapel to Procan here in the North, perhaps next to a lake or river, to bring the wisdom, words and goodness of Procan to the region.

Later that day he girds for travel. He purchases necessary rations, eight first aid kits, an extra throwing hammer, and an extra Rowan shield. The cleric transfers his potions - particularly the sacred elixir of water breathing - to his metal vials to ensure they are safe from breakage.
