Innana the Fighter:
thirdkingdom wrote:The main of the party stops by the temple before heading out to visit Myraal the Guildmage. The party is directed to Varis' old office by a ruddy-faced novice, and introduced to the new administrator, a middle-aged woman with greying hair and sparkling blue eyes. "Lady Usyl, may I present the heroes who found Aleena's body? They have some questions regarding items they left with Father Varis several weeks ago."

The companions are welcomed into the office. Lady Usyl proves to be charming and effusive, so it tempers the edge somewhat to learn that the items they described were not found among Varis' possessions. "We have come to believe that Varis was killed on or around the 2nd of Flaurmont. It is entirely possible that the Varis you gave those items to was not the Varis you thought he was. I will let you know if we uncover anything further."

Afterwards, the party mounts up and rides north to visit Myraal in his Tower. The mage is, as always, slightly tipsy and disheveled, but he ushers the companions inside with much gusto. "I have been researching the items you have brought me, my friends, and have discovered many things! Alas, the magics required to create these bowls of far-seeing are beyond my abilities, and I feared to attempt to use it lest I bring the attention of the dark mage upon this Tower. I can tell you the following, however: this bowl is keyed to a specific foci. Bargle is most likely not using a bowl to respond, as he would be required to keep the keyed bowl with him at a times. Most likely it is keyed to an item the mage carries on him, or to the mage himself. I do not believe it would be possible to contact others not in possession of this key." Myraal wrings his hands a bit nervously. "I would also like you to take this bowl with you today, as I fear he who possesses the key may be able to either scry through the bowl or divine its location without it being activated."

"The shield is non-magical, but made it Rockhome. This rune here," he points to a small marking on the back of the mirror, "denotes the Stonefist clan, while the mark next to it tells me it was forged by one Raggas Stonefist. Other than that, there is little I can tell you."

He turns to the last item. "Now this little beauty right here . . . honestly, there's not much I can tell you about it. I'm guessing it is Alphatian in origin, but that's about it. It's outside my area of expertise. Perhaps in a larger city -- Specularum or Darokin -- you might find out more information, but that's as much as I can tell you."
Innana stays quiet and remains her distance from Lady Usyl. She is finding it hard to be around people. She is not sure if it is because there is a chance anyone could be the doppelgänger, or if the long journey has made her sensitive to human company.

When they are finally able to visit with Mage Myral, she pulls out Swift Fang for evaluation. "There is a wire here that hinders my grip. I was wondering if it was removed it would effect the magical effects of the sword." Innana lays the sword on the table near the Mage. "I have been wondering what secrets this sword holds."

Before they leave Innana pulls out the broken Faye stone from her satchel. "This stone saved my life, yet I have not been the same since." For the first time Innana looks the old Mage in the eyes, so that he can see the elongated cat-like pupils, "if you could shed some light on what is happening with me, I would appreciate it."

Innana plans to shop for rations, and buy two capes when the get to town.

Lanny the Elf

Lanny shakes his head no at Drudsa concerning the offer for the cat's skull and speaks quietly aside to the mage.

"If it's going to go into anyone's dining room, it will be going into OUR dining room, the one at Castle Mistamere... well, once we cleanse that room of yellow mold, of course..."

When Innana mentions about the faery stone, Lanny turns to the warrioress.

"I would wager that Zoltar the Blind might know more about that one... After all, it was his lover that gave us that stone. Drudsa says he plans to visit Zoltar in the coming days, perhaps you might wish to accompany him?"

Lanny looks about at all the items returned by Myraal.

"Myraal, there is one item missing, the chain mail armor that we recovered from the cave troll. We already knew that it provides a modest protection, but we were wondering if it possessed any more hidden magical qualities..."

After Myraal tells him about the chain mail armor, Lanny asks him how much that armor might be worth to him (or just its estimated value on the open market) in gold pieces. He then proceeds to show Myraal the other items in need of analysis, identification, and/or research:
Those items include:

a. the silver dagger found in the fireplace at Castle Mistamere (unless Myraal tells him it's pretty much just an old silver dagger)
b. the dark, oily wooden box with 5 buttons on the front
c. the silver medallion of the evil cleric (unless Myraal suggests that we bring that to the Church for analysis and/or destruction)
d. the 3 glass vials (presumably potions)

Other items of housekeeping:

1. I do recall that we did receive XP for those 7 amber gems. I will go ahead and remove those three items (amber gems, bone club, six-finger medallion) from the Treasure List, since they are no longer available.

2. TK, just curious: Is there an elvish shrine in Threshold as well? I did not see one mentioned in the list of shrines you provided.

Al, I believe, by process of elimination, that TK/Myraal was referring to the green figurine when he posted/said this:

By the way, everyone, as usual I have been recording the notes about these items on the Custom/Unique Items thread, as they are explained to us, so be sure to check that thread if you are ever trying to remember any specific details about any of the special items we have obtained.

Myraal, Guildmage

Myraal looks briefly at the sword Innana proffers. "Ah, yes. I had begun to examine this blade, 'ere you took it back from me. I can give you an answer in a week's time, and can examine these other items as well." He waves his hand towards the items Lanny offers. "That box, would you like me to open it?"

Myraal examines the Faery Stone, "Aye, elf, Zoltar could tell you more."

Lanny the Elf

When asked about the box, Lanny glances around at the others.

"Is it even possible to open? My companions and I were under the impression that perhaps some combination of buttons must be pressed in order to gain access to the box without damaging its contents, or its opener. I realize that you would not know the combination either, but maybe you might know something else about these boxes generally, or can divine something about this one specifically, that can help us figure out the combination."

Lanny looks about at the all the items before Myraal.

"I know there are customary fees for your your research, and that we still owe you for past research. Let us know your fee for this latest batch of items."
TK, here is the last mention of the troll's chain mail, from the visit to Myraal on Flaurmont 6 (IC IX, Page 4):
thirdkingdom wrote:He gestures at the pile of books. "As to your most recent charge, I have been doing as you asked. The elven chain mail is as the elves claimed; you may take that today, if you wish. I am still working on the other set of chain."
All: Does anyone want the troll's chain mail if it is just chain mail +1? Should we consider trying to sell it? What about if it has other magical properties?

As Rhys can't wear armour, and it was acquired before he joined the party, I feel I have no goat in this race.

But we probably could use it (or the coin from selling it) to pay Myraal for his services if it is just chainmail +1 and nobody wants to/can use it. This is probably a good general rule for any magical items we find and nobody has use for - better to sell them and use the coin/get the XP than horde stuff we don't need/can't use.

I will award XP for the sale of magic items equal to the amount it is sold for.

Innana raises her right eyebrow at Lanny. "His lover?" Innana gently collects the stones, and puts them in her satchel. "I sure would have like to have seen this Faye. You will have to tell me about her, Lanny. Perhaps some of the mystery can be solved I. Learning about her."

Innana thinks about the troll armor. " I like the fact it is magical, and I would have a sounder sleep in it if I wore it to sleep in, but I would like to wait for magical plate mail. Innana looks around the group. Anyone else interested? "

Myraal, Guildmage

Myraal wiggled his fingers. "The box may be locked to mundane hands, but I possess enchantments that should be able to open it." He gestures to the chain mail. "Aye, it only possesses a modest dweomer. You might be able to sell it for three or four thousand gold for it in Threshold, maybe more in a larger city. "

Lanny the Elf

Lanny looks around at the others at the mention of the box.

"Well... I for one would like to see this box opened as soon as possible. It could contain treasure, or it could contain something of even greater importance, such as secret instructions from Bargle. Could you possibly even open it right now, Myraal? Also, what is your fee for the spell to open the box, and for researching this last batch of items for us? We already owe you 2000 in gold."

Lanny glances down at the chain mail and then back at the guild mage.

"By the way, Myraal, are you yourself interested in this suit of chain mail, either for yourself or as a gift for someone you know? If so, what would you offer for it?"
TK, did Myraal say anything about the silver dagger, the cleric's silver medallion, or the three glass vials that Lanny showed him?

Also, I'm not sure if Bregalad presented his magical plate mail and magical spear for research, but if we are getting some sort of "bulk discount" on items submitted for historical research, then it might be good to throw those in as well.

If no one wants the Chain Mail +1, then I think we should sell it. The only question is where and when. Although, if it is possible for additional enchantments to be added to it, would anyone want it then? Is that even possible to do?

Bregalad the elf

Bregalad presents the carved spear and magical plate mail to Myraal. "My apologies, Guildmaster, for taking these before you could complete your research of them. They were needed to defeat the great cat. Since our last meeting, we have learned that the armor possesses a modest enchantment of protection, and that the weapon is a spear of giant slaying. I am curious if these items have other properties yet to be uncovered, and who may have been their makers."
Bregalad is asking if there are other properties besides the +1 AC for the plate mail, and the +1 (+3 vs giants) for the spear. And if possible, he would like to know of their history, e.g. if the items have names and who made them.

"Hmmph!" he snorts as Bregalad turns over his items. "I see you have designs on keeping my busy yet again. Very well, I will do what you ask for the sum of two thousand gold, again."

Lanny the Elf

Lanny approaches Myraal and states quietly that the guild mage had previously agreed to research the sword, spear, and armor (before they were retrieved by the group), as well as several other items, for only 1,000 gold in total, and that the 2,000 gold currently owed was actually from 2 separate batches of items that were researched, each for 1,000 gold.

"We are no penny pinchers, mind you, and your services have been extremely valuable to us. If you insist on an additional 2,000 gold, or 4,000 gold in total, then perhaps you would accept this chain mail armor as payment in full for your services. I would need to confirm this sale with my friends, of course..."
I'm operating under the assumption that having these permanent magic items ID'ed and researched all in one place just make things easier on TK and everyone else.

A 4,000 gp sale price for the chain mail would give each PC approximately 551xp (and 137xp for Semele), assuming 7.25 shares of treasure. Not enough to level up Aquar or Rhys, but it gets them about halfway there. We could then see about turning in the cleric's silver medallion to the Church for destruction for additional XP (assuming it is magical...) and possibly also selling any of the three potions in the glass vials (once we identify them, and IF we have no need for them).

If anyone objects to the sale of the chain mail, please speak up now. Given our current plans to keep exploring the northern frontier for a while, I don't think we'll be visiting any of the big cities any time soon, so 4,000 gold might be the best we can get at this time. (I realize that Myraal has not yet expressed an interest in the armor, so this is still pending that interest.

Quite honestly I'd forgotten about that. I should just charge full price for the hassle of trying to keep track of all this, but since he did quote a price for sword, spear and armor let's just say it's 750 for the new stuff.

Ok then. So, if Myraal is not interested in the armor, then we will have to pay him a total of 2750gp cash in a week's time for all the research that will have been completed up to that point. Then, if we still wish to sell the chain mail, we will have to do that separately in Threshold. (Lanny was hoping to avoid that hassle by offering Myraal the chain mail (valued at 4,000 gp) in exchange for all of Myraal's research services, up to and including the current batch of items.) But if Myraal is not interested in the armor, then I guess this is not an option?)
