Re: On the island: Exploring the northern trail
"The Abyss take you!" Ulrich curses as the rat bites him. He swings his mighty mace again, aiming for the rat that bit him.
To hit with mace [1d20] = 7
"Curse you and your unclean kind!" he shouts, splashing the water where a rat used to be.

How do we know you're not a donkey-brained man?
Re: On the island: Exploring the northern trail
Seeing the group is almost to the end of the hoard of rats, Lauranna decides to pop off two more daggers.
[1d20+3] = 10+3 = 13 to hit [1d4] = 3 damage
[1d20+3] = 7+3 = 10 to hit [1d4] = 3 damage

OOC clarification for Dave; retro announcement
OOC: Oh snap! Yeah, we're going to be using those rules, Dave. My bad there, man...dmw71 wrote:That was so much fun, I have to ask: Are we using the "fighting the unskilled" rules? If so, I could have been poking and prodding at these things three times per round.

*** Please edit Caelvanna's Round 1 action post and add two more attack rolls, and then make 3 rolls total for Round 2! ***
Note: In the interest of keeping things clean and linear, Dave, you can take the roll you just made for Rd 2 and add that + one more for Round 1, and then make 3 new rolls in your action post for Round 2. Or you can just make 4 more rolls and I'll apply them to the correct post when I get home and am not on my stupid smartphone. Apols again for my oversight. I'm claiming uber-con preparation diversions! Yeah, that's it!

I wasn't even aware of the rule -- a little birdie told me.Argennian wrote:Or you can just make 4 more rolls and I'll apply them to the correct post when I get home and am not on my stupid smartphone. Apols again for my oversight.

Round 1
Short Sword (vs. s/m) [1d20+1] = 3+1 = 4 [1d6+1] = 3+1 = 4
Short Sword (vs. s/m) [1d20+1] = 13+1 = 14 [1d6+1] = 5+1 = 6
Round 2
Short Sword (vs. s/m) [1d20+1] = 6+1 = 7 [1d6+1] = 5+1 = 6
Short Sword (vs. s/m) [1d20+1] = 3+1 = 4 [1d6+1] = 4+1 = 5
Almost not even worth it.

OOC2 for Dave
OOC: so noted and thanks, Dave. Btw, 100xp bonus for the little bird that told you!dmw71 wrote:I wasn't even aware of the rule -- a little birdie told me.I went ahead and just made four rolls -- two for round 2 and two more for round 3, which is the current round, right? (She was using her bow in round 1.)

As a point of order, Caelvanna fired those 3 arrows in the surprise round, and then went to her short sword in Round 1 and afterward. I'll apply those 4 additional rolls to Rounds 1 & 2 and still need 3 attack/damage rolls for Caelvanna for Round 3!

IWC: Encounter #9 Giant rat attack Rd 3
Encounter with the Giant Rats: Round 3 (TOD: 0810hrs)
Initiative
Party: 4
Giant Rats: 2
~ The trio of island explorers begin to turn the tide and push their deadly steel intentions upon the remaining verminous horde in the watery cave...
Caelvanna spouts a series of angry exaltations through gritted teeth and continues to swing her elven blade in malevolent earnest. This time she not only dispatches the last remaining giant rat facing her but also does in one the two remaining rodents facing off against Ulrich. The dwarf cleric proffers a statement of intent regarding the disposition of his hungry opponents and swings his bloodied mace yet again. Whether it's his hungry target's slippery moves or the sudden appearance of the Wild elf's steel in the picture, he misses the mark and follows that up with a proper curse. Standing in the water at the edge of the rock ledge, just behind Ulrich and Caelvanna, Lauranna draws and fires another two daggers at the lone remaining giant rat. This time she's not so lucky, as her first shot ricochets off the dwarf's right leg, thankfully not penetrating his protective chain armor grieves, and the other one goes skittering off down the tunnel.
The lone remaining giant rat facing off against the island invader trio seems unusually determined to get past them and at the awaiting giant crab feast, or at least die trying. It tries to switch targets and take a bite out of Caelvanna but misses horribly. Just beyond the growing pile of dead rodents, the 3 magically-slept giant rats continue to snooze away unaware and unable to wake up.

*** Need Declared Actions and a d6 initiative roll for the party for Round 4! ***
Enemy/opponent casualties: (1 giant rat left: now engaged with both Ulrich & Caelvanna)
- 8 giant rats KIAed (5 - Caelvanna, 1 - Ulrich, 2 - Lauranna)
- 3 giant rats still slept (by Lauranna's sleep spell)
Party casualties:
- Caelvanna: taken 5 points damage (from 3 giant rat bites)
- Ulrich: taken 3 points damage (from 1 giant rat bite)
OOC: ok, I went back and edited the action posts for Rounds 1 & 2 to add in Caelvanna's extra attacks/round garnered from when a fighter-class character is "fighting the unskilled" (i.e. creatures with less than 1d8 hit points). Lauranna fired 2 more daggers into melee but ended up hitting Ulrich with her first shot. Thankfully his AC was low enough to prevent any subsequent damage.
Dave: I asked for one more attack for Caelvanna than I actually needed for Round 3 but will go ahead and apply that last roll made in Round 4. So if she's continuing to attack, please make only 2 attack/damage rolls for Round 4 please, good sir.
As always, please let me know if you have any questions or need any further clarifications!

Assuming Caelvanna dispatched the last remaining conscious rat, Ulrich will help Lauranna take care of the sleeping rats. He nods a quick thanks to Caelvanna as he does so.
Ulrich will use a CLW on Caelvanna once combat is over.

IWC: Encounter #9 Giant rats KIAed at end of Rd 4
Encounter with the Giant Rats: Round 4 (TOD: 0811hrs)
Initiative
Party: 6
Giant Rats: 5
The party continues to react quickly. Caelvanna presses her multiple attacks against the last giant rat while Ulrich watches on, ready to back her up if needed. Lauranna climbs up out of the water on the ledge and sets her sights to finishing off the ones she hit with her sleep spell.
Instead of pressing forward like before, and be forced to brave the sharp, waiting edge of the Wild elf's blade, the last of the large vermin has a sudden change of heart and seeks to withdraw from likely doom. It makes to race back from whence it came but with an impressive athletic lunge, Caelvanna dives after it and her reach is just long enough to catch and cleave it nearly in two!
Lauranna quickly finishes off the first of the three over-sized, sleeping rodents with a straightforward, businesslike manner common in many elves. She then moves over to adjudicate the next one while Ulrich makes to follow her leader. The dwarf cleric steps over and smashes the last giant rat with a mighty downward blow of his mace.
Caelvanna recovers from her elegant, diving kill with satisfaction and sudden appreciation for all those damn exercises that Zimba made them do. A look down the tunnel with her sharp, demi-human eyes garners her a quick peek at more sets of rodent ones looking back at her from the cover of the corner. When she gets to a crouch again and points her sword at them, they collectively decide the dream of a giant crab breakfast is an unattainable one, and flee.
Now finished dispatching the last member of the giant rat horde, Ulrich moves over and offers a cure light wounds spell to Caelvanna...

Re: On the island: Exploring the northern trail
Caelvanna first dusts herself off after her lunge attack, then uses the fur from one of her rat victims to wipe clean her blade before sheathing the weapon. An instant later, she remembers the bow she carefully tossed aside earlier and rushes to secure what has become an almost natural extension to her hand. She gives the string a quick few tugs before dutifully returning to her perch to resume her watch over the pool their water-breathing companions are exploring.
She thanks Ulrich with an appreciative nod after his healing attempt.

Re: On the island: Exploring the northern trail
"Damn rats." Lauranna spits out. She moves to collect her daggers. "Bog and Emm were expecting me back. Where is that potion?"
IWC: the party regroups; Ulrich cast CLW spell...
~ Now that the encounter with the viciously hungry giant rats is over, the trio of island invaders collect themselves, along with their weapons and gear...
Caelvanna dusts herself off and cleans the rodent blood and guts from her blade before returning it to it's scabbard. She moves back over to her previous place and picks up her beloved elven bow to check it over and ensure it's still okay. To her relief, it is.
Knowing that his Wild elf companion suffered more wounds than he from the dirty vermin assault, Ulrich steps over to her and casts a cure light wounds spell (+3hp). Caelvanna can feel the warm wave of divine healing envelop her body and restore most of her lost vitality. She respectfully thanks the dwarf cleric for this.
Meanwhile, Lauranna curses their dead rodent adversaries and moves to recover her thrown daggers. The third one she threw skittered all the way in to where the rats rounded the corner but the High elf finds none waiting there for her when she comes to reclaim the blade. She can, however, hear a few squeaks from further in and smell the rat pee they left behind.
Weapons collected and sorted, Lauranna returns to the rock ledge and queries the others about the location of Gentleman Billy's water breathing potion. Caelvanna nods and Ulrich points to it sitting safely on the ledge by Bogdan's armor and gear.

Re: In the watery cave
~ With their giant rat adversaries either dispatched or fled in fear deeper within the cave, the trio of island explorers sort themselves and settle back in to wait for their comrades.
Lauranna moves over to where Gentleman Billy's potion of water breathing awaits but appears hesitant to take a swig and dive back down in the cold, dark waters to rejoin Bog and Emm. She admits the thought of swimming in complete darkness without an underwater light source is not one she cherishes, also detailing that infravision makes little difference either. In addition to these particular facts, the High elf knows that the druid's invisibility to animals spell has now expired, so she decides to wait it out in the watery cave until they return.
With her trusty bow back to hand and loaded once again, Caelvanna leans over the edge of the rock ledge to peer down through the entrance of the crab den at the dark water within. She sees no signs of the big half-orc fighter and young human druid that are conducting the so far 15 minute underwater reconnoiter. Nearby on the ledge, Ulrich dutifully cleans rat blood and guts from his weapons, armor and gear and appears content to do so without comment.
