Re: (5) Beyond the Wall
Yes, this is possible with a small shield.
Re: (5) Beyond the Wall
Dawn, Unknown Day and Year - likely Winter
The party moves closer to the creatures to try and get a better look at what they are dealing with, but no one takes any further action, hoping to remain unseen.
Grom attempts to read the strange writing - and though it is a bit far for him to fully comprehend, he does recognize it as a sort of magical script not unlike is sometimes found in magical scrolls, that could perhaps be of interest if they get a chance to look at it more closely.
But, given the danger ahead, the group is wary, considering slipping away again and trying another path - to their immediate west, they do detect a cobblestone path, albeit overgrown like all the others, leading south, and they could skirt by in the nearby brush fields to the east and rejoin the road after clearing the gaunts.
Square=5 feet
Note the positioning here is not set in stone since we're moving from theater of the mind to a grid - so if you feel that you be in a different spot, I can move you without use of an "action" in combat. And of course, retreat/evasion is still an option. Actions?
Kordrak Lvl4 Huntsman - 33/33 FA 4 AC 5
Akrisios Lvl4 Mountebank - 18/18 FA 3 AC 4
Grae Lvl4 Death Solider - 27/27 FA 4 AC 6 Bullseye Lantern: 230/360
Cían Lvl4 Druid - 23/23 FA 3 AC 4
Grom Lvl4 Magician - 13/14 FA 1 AC 9
Caradoc Lvl4 Bard - 19/19 FA 3 AC 5
Zosime Lvl4 Cleric - 22/24 FA 3 AC 4

"We can ambush them later, Zosime. The more we know about the area, the more informed we are about possible escape routes and so on.
I'd say we continue on the same path."

"All right, I will follow along. We need to keep alert, those things can fly and an ambush from above will be difficult to deal with."

"I agree," Grae states while keeping an eye on the creatures. "Best to avoid them if we can. And get a full grasp of what lies beyond them before engaging in combat."

Re: (5) Beyond the Wall
Keeping one eye on Akrisios and the black spot circling him, Grom agrees with those who wish to back away from these monsters.
“The fresh dirt may indicate this just happened recently, but despite the possible magical writings, I would rather attempt to learn more about it before we get closer, just in case.”
He urges the others to back away before heading off towards the nearby trail.

"Agreed Grom, if we are going to try and avoid them we should give them a wide berth."

"Understood" - the huntsman leads the way in a wide roundabout way.

Dawn, Unknown Day and Year - likely Winter
Wary of entering into another battle against these winged horrors, the party turns back to the brush and beats a retreat while darkness is still on their side, gradually turning back towards the road well out of sight, and back into the clear grassland beside the road.
The glow on the horizon continues to grow slowly and the stars on the eastern horizon fade, though the sun still stubbornly remains hidden. Still, the light is enough that they can now move comfortably without torchlight.
The cobblestone path continues south before meeting up with a larger road running east and west, seeming to lead back towards the gate they encountered yesterday.
Red X= position of the party
Black rectangle at the end of the road = the monolith
Hex=1/2 mile
Actions? edit: forgot to flip the map, the book has west at the top and I have to rotate it to keep it intuitive!
