OOC for Bogdan, Caelvanna & party

#81 Post by Argennian »

OOC: yeah, you guys roll your damage and then I make some rolls to see if it's max damage for that weapon, x2 or x3 damage, etc. I also handle the critical fumble stuff as well.

Speaking of criticals, you guys crushed it with 3 this round alone, and for big damage! Way to go Team Northern trail! :P

POP1: I had an oversight on that 20 that Dave rolled for Caelvanna's 3rd arrow, and did forgot to add that in when I was rushing to get that post up this am before work. That was for x2 damage, which I corrected (sorry, Dave! ) in my previous post. I still need to get Bog's and Ulrich's crits adjudicated but yeah, it's looking like this one's gonna be giant crab cakes! :D

~ Heading over to get Group 2 & 3 caught up now and will get the action resolved for you guys later this am if I can. If not, hopefully by not too late tonight after work. I know I'm still tardy on those pms and offer apols for the lag there. Hope to get that done too shortly.

Thanks again for the quick responses and glad to see the party all together and ready to put their training to the test!

Giant crab #2 moves out watery cave to attack party...

#83 Post by Argennian »

~ The wave of another giant crab breaks upon the rocks that are the party. It lashes out instinctively with it's two massive claws, one towards Bogdan and the other at Caelvanna. The Wild elf archer ducks out of the way easily and the heavily armored half-orc batters the blow away with his shield.

Bog swings his longsword in retaliation and lands a massive blow! The blade of the masterwork Karagonian weapon cleaves completely through the center of the giant crab's face, top to bottom right between it's eye stalks. The creature shudders heavily. At nearly the same time, Ulrich winds up with his mace and delivers a mighty blow of his own, bashing completely through the giant crustacean's well-worn outer shell and cracking it all the way back. Emm lunges forward to strike between her companions with her spear. It stabs nothing but the coastal sea air, as the giant crab steps backwards and collapses in a big pile of dead. Not suffering any damage or even breaking a sweat, the party ends the threat in a moment.

A closer inspection of the dead monster reveals it to be a bit bigger than the other one you killed and shaped slightly different. It has a flatter, longer profile and darker coloring with spots. Perhaps another species of the robust ecosystem. All is still again and after eyes adjust to the darker conditions, no threat can be seen up ahead at the rock ledge or once again still water there.

Actions?

******************************************

OOC: Damn, with those three critical hits, you guys did a combined 68 points damage there!

Bog's hit was for x2 rolled weapon damage (34 dam) and Ulrich's was for x3 damage (12), which is very rare. The poor sucker only had 29hp, so Caelvanna darn near dropped the thing in it's tracks with that 3rd arrow!

Bogdan stands, fists just in front of his hips, and flexes his shoulders. The walls of the cave bow out as waves of green pixilation flow from his body. He turns his head to one side, cracking his neck in several places.

Bogdan wipes his sword clean before replacing it in its sheath, then glances at the others and says, "Looks like crab's back on the menu, boys..." Assuming the giant crab is way too big to move on their own, he'll step around it and use the coin to light up the hole to see if anything else is obviously present.

If he cannot spot anything that is an obviously immediate danger, he will continue with his previously indicated plan (remove bulky armour, take a dose of the potion, grab the two sacks, and enter the hole with his spear, etc.)

Emm gazes momentarily at the huge crustacean. The Great Owl will be pleased, she mutters with a slight smile, then moves ahead.

Party dispatches giant crab #2; moves inside watery cave...

#87 Post by Argennian »

~ The party notes the results of their training and teamwork and cannot help but feel pride in their mutual capability and quick accomplishment. The giant crab is likely as heavy as it looks, and unless the entire party is going to make the effort, it will remain lying dead just inside the entrance to the watery cave.

Bogdan retrieves his spears and produces Billy's light coin from it's leather pouch he wears around his thick neck. He climbs over the cracked body of the big crustacean and leads the others deeper into the watery cave. They arrive unchallenged at the rocky ledge, which appears to be above the waterline by a few feet. The passage tappers down even more here, say to about 10 feet wide by 8 1/2 feet tall, and looks to be about 4 feet tall above the ledge to the ceiling. Beyond the area of the ledge, the passage looks to continue further in around a corner some 25 feet away. The water is also deeper here, say about 2 1/2 to just under 3 feet deep. The magical light from the coin also illuminates the floor and entrance to the crab hole at the base of the ledge. The party notes that there are pieces of giant baby crab scattered about in the water here. A few legs and claws here and there and the entire top portion of one's shell are evidence that someone or something else other than the party was in here looking for a crab dinner as well.

Eliciting no further encounters and seeing no other threats present, Bog begins taking off his metal armor and making preparations to undertake their previously discussed plans of underwater exploration and recovery operations. There is room up on the rock ledge for any that do not wish to remain standing in the deeper water.

******************************************

OOC: okay then gang, please detail your character's positioning, i.e. if your character is standing in the water by the crab den entrance or perhaps climbing up on the rock ledge there.

~ Please notate if anyone else is going to prepare another light source here, as it will get dark again in the watery cave once the light coin is underwater.

TOD: 7:45am of Day 6 on island (Total time since departed Karagonia: 18 days)

Caelvanna sheathes her sword, cursing its ineffectiveness while doing so, and quickly scampers up the rocky ledge and perches above the water. Once she locates a sturdy base, she brings her bow back to hand and nocks an arrow. Lowering her already small frame into a crouch, she props her back against the cave wall and begins alternating her gaze from the entrance, Bog's dive location and the passage beyond; remaining on high alert for any unexpected visitors.

Prepared for an underwater excursion, Lauranna sheaths her short sword and follows Bog, at least for a bit, making sure she can back to the surface with her deep breath.

Emm also follows Bog, trusting to Shanny's potion and keeping her own Water Breathing spell in reserve. She sets her shield on the ledge and prepares to back up the Half-Orc with her spear and spells.

OOC: wait, so how many are going into the hole? I'm not so sure it's that big or necessary. Might be better to just have one check it out. If he needs help, he won't be a hero... ;)

OOC clarifications for the party

#92 Post by Argennian »

OOC: alrighty then! :)

Okay so we have the following declared actions:

- Bog: (wearing no armor, taking dose of potion of water breathing) diving underwater into the crab den
- Lauranna: (wearing leather armor, just holding breath) following Bog underwater into the crab den
- Emm: (wearing leather armor, holding breath or taking dose of potion??) following Bog & Lauranna underwater into the crab den(?)
- Caelvanna: (wearing leather armor) confirmed on the rock ledge locked & loaded on lookout
- Ulrich: (wearing chain/shield/mace) standing in the water by the entrance to assist those going in and out of the hole, play relay to stuff he's handed, etc. (unless otherwise noted by SL)

tkrexx wrote:Emm also follows Bog, trusting to Shanny's potion and keeping her own Water Breathing spell in reserve. She sets her shield on the ledge and prepares to back up the Half-Orc with her spear and spells.
POP1: Shanny's potion is a homebrew healing elixir (for d8+1), each one of you has one. The potion of water breathing (4 doses) was Gentleman Billy's. Bog just took a gulp (dose), so there are 3 gulp/doses left. (Duration: 1hour + 1d10 rounds/dose ... and I get to roll the 1d10 all secret-like if you push it! )

So is Emm planning on taking a dose as well, Rexx?

Just as a point of order, the potion of water breathing and the water breathing spell allow users to breath underwater, but they do not allow speech or the casting of spells with verbal components. The caster would need to be within an air bubble or have some other magical means. Just want to make sure we're clear on that before Emm goes swimming! ;)
(Note: Somatic gestures can still be made underwater, but at a penalty of -2 to -4 segments to their rolled initiative, depending upon casting time.)

OOC: also forgot to ask if either caster is going underwater with their spell components. Many material components need to make a saving throw when they are immersed underwater. Failure indicates the component immediately disperses or is spoiled!

Edit: obviously things like mistletoe & plants could potentially be "dried out" after getting wet, and do have a good saving throw, but there is a potential for the salt water to contaminate the components. FWIW, I'm not looking to be overly hard-ass here folks, just wanting to confirm with you guys that there is a mechanic involved for such things, so that there is realization beforehand. As previously promised, anytime stuff like that arises in the game, I always want to make sure we're on the same page, that way the player(s) can make informed decisions & understand any possible consequences.

Ahhh... ain't underwater adventuring just the best! :P

OOC: I thought the original plan was just Bog. Nobody had ever previously mentioned going underwater or I would have said something to the effect you just did...

OOC for Al & the party

#94 Post by Argennian »

Alethan wrote:OOC: I thought the original plan was just Bog. Nobody had ever previously mentioned going underwater or I would have said something to the effect you just did...
OOC: that's what I thought as well, Al, but it appears a decision to follow Bog underwater is being made here. As DM, I don't want to assume anything and certainly don't have a problem with players changing their minds, even at the last moment, so we'll see what folks want to do first.

POP1: made an edit to my previous post to clarify a few details. If you guys have any questions at all regarding what I posted please respond in the OOC/Questions? thread or shoot me a pm.

Caelvanna remains perched and on the lookout; perhaps too eager to give her improved archery skills another test.

Indeed, this puts a different spin on things. Re-eval is in order!

Emm wades to Bog, making no sound, yet drawing spiritual sigils around the large Half-Orc with a handful of holly, then does the same for herself.

Invisibility to Animals Emm will also cast this on anyone else entering the water cave.

If there are any crabs remaining inside the cave, they will not see us for at least 10 minutes. Instead of the potion, she will use oak leaves to cast Water Breathing on herself. She would not only want to back Bog up, but also see what befell the crablings. Her pouches (With her material components) will be left of dry land with her shield.

Thanks for the clarification, Arg! Component marked off.

OOC: YOU just want to make sure Bog doesn't spear them all for good measure, to make sure they don't all grow up to be 10' wide crabs themselves!

OOC2 clarifications for Emm & the party

#99 Post by Argennian »

OOC: okay then folks, everyone has checked in (thank you!) and I think we are finally resolved on clarifications moving forward.

Emm will cast Invisibility to Animals on those going underwater into the crab hole, being Bogdan, Lauranna and herself (so 3 spells there). She will then cast her Water Breathing spell on herself and dive in after the other two. She will leave her spell component pouch on the rock ledge next to Bog's armor & gear.

POP1: Al, question: if Emm is casting the above spell, will Bog still be taking the bag of food-chum with him?

~ Since we have multiple characters going underwater into the crab den, I'll just go ahead and make a post here in the main action thread. Update coming tonight!

"shrug" Didn't count on most of the above activity, so I haven't thought about it...

Probably not. Don't want to attract attention TO us if anything else is down there.
