Oh, be careful what you wish for! :SAN:

Sigrún hears the hammering rain on Silver...

Then the flap of a raven's wings...

There is a moment of calm... and opportunity... because the All Father only watches those who are... interesting.

With utterly clarity she matches her targeting reticule to the plot of Vampire 1 and stamps on the firing pedal. Stupid Imperial design! She squeezes the trigger on her turret's gunnery yoke.

Immolating "Vampire 1".

Over the intercom Sigrún screams a joyous "Já!"

She flips her console to comm mode.
Eris wrote: Sat May 24, 2025 6:25 pm Over the radio "We will track you to the....<static>......"
and transmits in a feral growl "Komdu og hittu mig. Ek man vega þik eins ok svín!"

Switching to intercom she addresses Flighty "Vend þér!" then translating "Flighty come about and put us back into this fight!"

(Swordy Trans Service:
"Come and meet me. I will slay you like a pig!"
"Turn about!")
Not to get in the way of her bravado, but Flighty has control of the transmitter in the bridge. Gunners shoot weapons, not mouths. ;)

Donovan replied as he worked out his fire control solutions. "Take out the missiles first Sigrun and we will deal with the corporates later if time permits. We do not want to be in system when the local Navy locks down jumping out so they can investigate. Besides, these guys sound like frothing maniacs rather than cool Corp operators or bounty hunters."

I’m not sure about the controls but I’ve always thought of the ones on this ship as less morphable. If Eris says you’re transmitting, you are. We put the controls to make sure no one was able to send signals without a green light though, so I feel pretty good about my read.

“I’ll keep that in mind,” he said evenly. “Focus on the weapons for now, please. Zaki, swap out maneuver for maneuver/evade.”

Hitting them harder when the biggie can start shooting as they keep running for the jump point.

I'm persuaded that you're right here. However, I'll leave my original post as is - Sigrun may well be "transmitting" per the medium of her own alternate reality... :SAN:

OOC: After the "devices" were found aboard ship, first the one embedded in Avionics, then the bomb in the secret compartment (which you haven't forgotten about have you), you were all quite worried about a spy aboard so Flighty had Donovan "lock down the comm and avionics systems" tightly. After Bob left the ship, no one changed anything, so no...at this time...Sigrun can't reconfigure the controls in the turret to do ship-to-ship comms nor can she take over the ship's flight system from there. Could the controls be reconfigured to do that? Yes, but there would need to be changes to the programming, the electronics, and Flighty would have to sign off on it all. He is still the actual Captain of this craft, even if he keeps putting Donovan's face out front. (Because the "bad guys" don't know either you or Donovan...is that right Terry?)

Targets:
Bogie 1: Very Long
Vampire 1: Near
Vampire 2: Near
Vampire 3: Long
Vampire 4: Very Long
Vampire 5: Very Long
Computer:
Maneuver/Evade-1
Navigation
Target
Gunner Interact
Space Combat Round 4 Resolved

Bogie 1 released two more missiles in your direction, Vampire 4 & Vampire 5! Then fires lasers at the Merchant ship hitting it again. It looks like it took out a fuel tank.

In quick succession three flashes hit Bogie1 as the SDB's close range and their targeting begins to take effect. Up on the Bridge, and in the turrets, the readings you are getting say it took two hull hits, but one appeared to penetrate to do damage inside. It is still powered and pursuing you...and has fired two more missiles at you.

Suddenly, the "Pirate" ship glows from bow to stern and in a flash disappears!

In Turret2, Sigrun fires at Vampire 1 and this time hits it squarely. The missile explodes!

The shot from Turret1, manned by Donovan, misses Vampire3 badly, but suddenly ship sensors pick up a sudden massive increase in radiation and go dark as your ship shudders! It appears your hull has protected you and all internal systems, but this blast takes an effect on your surface sensors and comm system. They are both now working at only about 30%, and now both turrets are having difficulty locking onto targets. Vampire 3 is not there anymore, it must have exploded and from the burst of radiation you can guess at what kind of explosion it was!

Vampire 4 & 5 continue to close on you fast!

Space Combat Round 5 Begins
Bottom Line for Round 5:
Sigrun needs 12 to hit the either Vampire 4 or Vampire 5.
Donovan needs 12 to hit the either Vampire 4 or Vampire 5.

As soon as the explosion happens and the ship shudders, Flighty sees Red lights flash on his console. There is a hull breech in the cargo area. Sensors are down to 32% and Comm down to 28%. Avionics and other controls are still Green. Flighty sees that the ship will reach his new calculated Jump Point in a little under 10 more minutes, and doesn't think either of those missiles can get into range before then, but if they are nuclear armed? He's not sure he has 10 more minutes now.

Doug has gotten the systems prepared to switch to Jump at a moment's notice, turned off the fuel purifier, and depressurized the ship. Back in Engineering Doug feels the ship shudder and sees the readings on his controls and its effect on the ship's external systems. This shouldn't affect the ship's ability to enter jump space, but it will have an effect on things when she emerges in the Regina system and repairs are going to be impossible while the ship is actually in jump.

Karcsi has the fire-control supplies ready and is prepared to deal with any damage from a hit on the ship...as best as can be done. Red lights flash on Karcsi's console, a minor hull breech in the cargo hold. The ship is depressurized, so there's no explosive decompression, but that hole needs seeing to, and doing it now before the ship enters jump makes it impossible is a priority.

Zaki is still in the Computer Room, having just swapped Maneuver for Maneuver/Evade when she feels the ship shudder...something has hit, but it doesn't appear to have done a lot of damage. That's all she knows at the moment.

Sigrun feels personally affronted at the misses as she fires on Vampire 1, exulting in killing it and sending threats to the Bogie which never make it outside the ship. Then her screens go black, and the ship shudders from what feels to her like a minor hull strike. The screens come back up, but greatly degraded. She can see two missiles in bound, but they aren't in the same places as before, new missiles. Two more at very long range. Where is the Bogie ship? Gone?

Donovan feels much better after splashing one of the missiles. He thinks the ship will have jumped for sure before Vampire 3 can get to them, but he fires on it and misses. Then his screens go black, and the ship shudders. The sensors flicker and come back online, but...Drat! He can't see anything! There are big gaps of nothing on his monitor, slowly, they begin to close as adjacent sensors readjust to expand coverage to areas now blown away or burned out, but that gives a very, very grainy view of the space around them in the direction where the missiles were coming in from. Sweat again trickling down his back, Donovan picks up signals from the ships in the area and then two more signatures, two more missiles in bound...but no Bogie. It should be among the blobs that are the other ships, but it doesn't appear to be there.

Actions for Round 5?
  • To Hit: 8+ on 2d6 after DM's are applied. Natural 12 automatic hit.
  • DM's to consider:
    • Target size: Missile is -1; Opponent Ship is +1
    • Target distance: Very Long -5; Long -3; Near -1; Close -0
    • Predict-1: +1
    • Gunner Interact: +2 (Donovan's Gunnery skill); +1 (Sigurn's Gunnery skill)
  • Round 1: Opponent Ship is Out of Range range closing one range band per 5 rounds, Missile 1 & 2 are Very Long range closing one range band per 2 rounds (Long rounds 2&3, Near rounds 4&5, Close 6&7)
  • Round 1: To Hit Missile 2d6-5-1, 8+ (only a 12 will hit). Ship is out of range.
  • If you hold fire and track for this round you get a +1 To Hit on the tracked target next round.
  • Generate will finish this round and can be swapped out for either Predict-1 or Gunner Interact for next round

Karcsi heads to the cargo area, grabbing emergency hull patch kit, sealant gun and collapsible brace panels.

“That was a nuke,” Flighty confirmed. “Someone really, really doesn’t like us. If the two missiles behind us are nukes, we’ll be in very sad shape. Prepare to jump. We’re getting out of here. Zaki, give me the jump software.”

He knows it will be risky, but he will hold off as long as he estimates it safe with nukes incoming. Then he’ll imitate jump as skillfully as he can.

You can roll for him when the time comes, Eris. Does Flighty know what happened to the boggie? You made it sound like that wasn’t a jump and I want to be sure. If it was a jump, the Boggie was deep in the 100D limit, wasn’t he?

At least temporarily focussed back to a "monoreality state" by a nuclear detonation Sigrún keys the intercom "Streð mik! These people don't hate you enough to just nuke you - they willing to throw a whole handful of proximity fused nukes to take you out! Flighty, my military appreciation is that we simply can't fight here, make the best jump you can to put us anywhere else!"

As to "bombs" I recall there was the one NPC Doug and Sigrún dumped into hyperspace and then what I think was some explosives we found in the "priest hole/smuggling hide". Sigrún stored these in the ship's locker - because no one has Demol skill).

Sigrún replies "Sorðinn, I thought our attackers might be renegade Sword World pirates trying to kill me. However, from the level of brutality and utter lack of honour displayed I now see that this can be nothing but Imperial business. I know what the Imperials accuse me of but neither pirates nor the Imperial Fleet in Lunion would use nuclear weapons to go after me... So, just what did you people do???"

"They want what we have hidden away, Sigrun. Not just me. Now let me focus on the jump. I need to get this right."

As Flighty is preparing for the jump, he'll close his eyes and appeal to whatever has been giving him visons to allow him the insight to tweak things at the last moment to get where they need to go in one piece. When he is ready, he'll verify the settings one last time and jump.

Donovan is swearing softly as he blinks away the afterimages from the nuclear detonation. "They were getting desperate. Let's hope that they don't have a magazine full of nukes. Nuclear weapons certainly raised the game in terms of our opposition." As the sensors settle down he picks up two more incoming missiles. "Two more targets designated Vampires 5 and 6." He attempts to fire at Vampire 5.

trawets wrote: Sun May 25, 2025 8:21 pm Doug checks the boards making sure all is ready to jump still and that the low berths are safe. Ship is ready to jump at your command. Was that a nuke?

OOC: It could have been a jump, but it didn't really look like one. And yes, he was deep inside the 100d limit. Good chance of a mis-jump due to that, but with 3 SDB's closing on him, maybe it was a risk he wanted to take...especially after popping off nukes at a "merchant ship." Nukes are very, very, verboten. It's just about the only rule of war that everybody follows.

Karcsi will head in the cargo area and report when he can.

"Frame 227-281, 3-4 meters tall, no internal damage seen, starting repair."

He will apply the Emergency patch, apply the quick seal around the edge and apply the braces and quick seal again.

"Ready to pressurize the cargo for checking seal."

Karcsi
