Bregalad the elf

Bregalad loves the cleric's suggestion. "I have few items with me and no rope, Aquar. But if you or others do have these items, I will help you set it up."

Innana the Fighter:

Half way through the day Innana gives up trying to keep her mass of curls under control, and just flips the whole tangle of sweat, and red curls on top of her head.

Innana keeps quiet so that she can scan the sectors around the group as they make their way through the snarl of brush and trees. Innana changes her position often to make sure she is flanking the most exposed area of the group in case there is an attack.

The hair on Innana's neck is on end throughout the day as an indicator that they are being watched, but no matter where she looks, she does not see any trace of being spied on. Not even an unsettled bird flying away from a tree. Nothing. Just an eerie feeling of being watched.

Innana listens to the plans for the night watch, and is excited to be invisible, and to wear the night vision goggles. This will her her first time for both experiences. "Yes, that is a good idea." Innana has to walk off after her calm reply, and turns from the group to let out a big grin.

Flaurmont 9-11

Whether because of or in spite of the night passes without incident. The next two days are a lesson in boredom, endurance and hiking. It is determined that the most efficient way to begin the search is to draw a rough circle around the party's camp and methodically begin searching. The mountainous terrain contains a multitude of gullies, crevasses, ravines and valleys -- many with small creeks flowing through -- and the heavily forested slopes severely reduces vision.

However, the exhaustive search reveals no sign that anything, of any interest, is currently or has ever dwelt in this section of woods. It is late morning on the third day, as they are beginning to head south to investigate another patch of forest, that the adventurers stumble across their first excitement of the trip.

Perhaps seventy feet away, up a rocky slope, stalk two giant spiders, each longer than a pack mule. They have glistening black carapaces, on the underside of which glisten a red hourglass. The adventurers sight the spiders at roughly the same time the spiders espy them. But whether the spiders have just fed or have no interest in tangling with an armed group of that size they seem to have no interest in molesting the adventurers.
Okay, so you guys have explored the first hex, with especially boring results. The encounter with the black widow spiders occurs on the southern border of hex 58.16.

Drudsa the dabbler
TK, Drudsa would have memorized Analyse again (twice) on the first day of camping, casting it on Bregalad's plate and, if first casting was sucessful, on the alphatian sword to identify other eventual enchantments.

As of the second day of searching Drudsa reverts to the following spell choice:
Cantrips: Exterminate, Knot, Werelight

Lv1: Magic Missile, Sleep

Lv 2: Invisibility, Mirror Image
Upon seeing the spiders Drudsa will try to cast Sleep centered on them.

Lanny the Elf

Upon spotting the spiders, Lanny is immediately on his guard. He notices, however, that the spiders are not acting aggressively, and when Drudsa states that he will try to put them to sleep, Lanny tries to convince him to hold his spell for any goblins or orcs they might encounter later, and for the group to leave the spiders alone and just move on.

Edit:
My understanding is that this is basically a non-combat encounter (unless we choose to make it a combat encounter). Although the spiders might be easily put to sleep and killed, Lanny does not want to venture near them, for fear of stepping into a whole lair of them.

By the way, Lanny's prepared spells change as soon as Drudsa brings Sleep back into his daily regimen of prepared spells. Lanny's prepared spells are now:

Level 1: Birdsong/Birdcall, Magic Missile
Level 2: Invisibility

Edit:

Note that per a previous ruling by TK, Birdsong/Birdcall can be used on multiple targets:

"The caster can touch a maximum number of targets equal to his level. So a 1st level elf could affect two targets - himself and one other." (OOC I, Page 31)

So, at Level 3, Lanny can use Birdsong/Birdcall to communicate with up to three others.

Drudsa the dabbler

"Lanny my friend, how can we know we will not find a carefully layed web in the middle of our way further ahead? In any event I would rather not have to meet these creatures again when they are not acting so indifferently. This is an opportunity to rid these woods of two unnatural monsters, if they are making it easier by not attacking us straight away then be it."

If the group doesn't seem inclined to fight Drudsa will not cast his spell, otherwise he will try to put the spiders to sleep.

Innana the Fighter:

Innana takes a few steps ahead of the group and focuses her eyes on the moving shadows on the hill. "Ew.. Giant spiders...Great. Innana just stands there looking defeated already. I am so bored I am almost tempted to stir these spiders up. ...almost. She has been practicing her sword skills with Thordin, and has been waiting for the opportunity to use then with Swift Fang.

Innana is undecided about the spiders. She will fight them if the group votes for it.

After a quick conference the adventurers decide to leave the giant arachnids alone and continue their way south. An hour or so before it is time to set camp they stumble across their first feature of interest. Traveling through a steep valley, alongside a small burbling brook, they come across a stone archway set into the western bank. The archway is fashioned from ancient stones, each the size of a man's torso, and cunningly fit so no mortar is need to hold its shape. A large stone door -- as wide as a man is tall and twice that height -- is set into the arch. Weatherworn runes, unrecognizable by any in the party, have been carved into the door around its outside edge.

Drudsa the dabbler

Drudsa looks at the door and the ground around the arch, trying to establish if there are any signs of the door having been opened recently or if there are any other signs of activity such as footprints.

Irrespectively of the success of the above Drudsa will try to note down a copy of the runes found in the door.

"Do you fellas see any tracks around here?"

Rhys the Traveler

Rhys examines the archway, first for traps, then to see if he can determine how to open the door.

Drudsa is unable to find any tracks around the area, whether prints made by man or beast or monster. Rhys examines the door. He sees no evidence of traps, and is unsure as to how the door might open. There is no visible keyhole or handle, and if it is truly made of solid stone as it appears it would likely weigh several tons at the least. It seems to him, however, that it would push in, based on the construction of the archway.

Lanny the Elf

Lanny's first action is to help search for tracks around the entrance of the archway. Finding none, he studies the door for a moment from a short distance, rubbing his chin as if in thought.

"Perhaps it was once the home of a hermitic wizard of centuries past... That might explain the runes along the edges. I don't believe this massive door will be opened by any physical force... Perhaps the runes are the key to opening the door."

Lanny shrugs and looks around at the others.

"I'm not sure what else we can do. I think Drudsa has the right of it by sketching the runes as best he can, another research project for Myraal, I suppose... Let's give Drudsa some time to get that done, and then let's find ourselves a suitable campsite."

Lanny starts to turn away but then turns back.

"Still, I wonder if there is any magic left in that ancient door. Why don't we try running a rowan shield over its surface?"

Drudsa the dabbler

"Yes, it is almost time to set out camp. Let's camp somewhere near, from where we can keep an eye on this structure. Not right here but at a discreet distance. This does not look like it has anything to do with the cat-beast but, then, we don't really know the whole story do we? I'd like to keep an eye on this thing during the nighttime, if nothing fancy happens we resume our search at first light."

Innana the Fighter:

Innana tries pushing on the rock door with her shoulder.

If the door does not open, Innana unloads both her, and Semeles things, and they both set up camp for the night.
Innana will look to see about what time the moon light hits the stone door, if it does, will wear the night goggles at that time while she is on her night watch shift.

Thordin is able to determine two germane facts about the archway and door. It is very old and the stone door does appear to be solid. He estimates it would take the combined strength of four or five of his comrades to open it.
