Original Dungeons & Dragons - Tournament Game
Original Dungeons & Dragons - Tournament Game
I've been putting together a tournament scenario for OD&D, and now I'm ready to run it.
In this scenario, you'll begin play as unfortunate prisoners, who are being thrown down into a dungeon as a sacrifice to a terrible monster. Due to this game's very restricted scope (the dungeon), coupled with a concrete goal (escape alive), I aim to avoid many of the usual pitfalls of a play-by-post game, where the game can meander and lose pace as time goes on. This game will very much be a "sprint, not a marathon", and I expect there to be a high degree of lethality. Since this is a tournament scenario, there is a competitive element to this game. Escaping the dungeon alive is a victory in itself, but there will also be the possibility of acquiring treasure during the escape. The character who successfully escapes the dungeon with the most treasure will be considered the overall winner of this tournament.
If you want to play this game, then you will start off with two first-level OD&D characters. Given that your characters are prisoners, you'll be starting with no weapons, no adventuring equipment, and no spells memorised. All you'll have are your wits, and what you can find in the dungeon itself. If your character is killed, there will be no opportunity to bring in a new character, and if both your characters are killed, then you're effectively "eliminated" from the tournament.
In terms of inspirational material for this game, I would say that the major touchstones include the TSR module "A4: In the Dungeons of The Slave Lords", Arnold Kemp's introductory dungeon "Lair of the Lamb", and the video game, "Legend of Grimrock". I'll be running this game at fast pace, with one post per day. I'll be handling all dice rolling on my end, so as players, all you need to do is interact with the game world, and let me know what you want to do.
If reading this has caught your interest, and you're wanting to play, put your name down below, and I'll kick off the game shortly.

Welcome, Diogenes.
The game you’re proposing sounds interesting. I’m sure you’ll find more than a few interested players.

Welcome Diogenes! I'm going to merge your two threads together. The rules for us include your first two posts requiring Moderator approval
You should now be good to go!

This is a game about killing things and taking their stuff so you can become more powerful in order to kill bigger things and take even better stuff.
Re: Original Dungeons & Dragons - Tournament Game
Unfortunately, I’m too busy to participate but will be watching with great interest to see how this plays out.
Good luck with this concept, it looks like a great idea!

Re: Original Dungeons & Dragons - Tournament Game
Am I seeing double again?

Re: Original Dungeons & Dragons - Tournament Game
Ordinarily I would be interested but I am currently running the A1: Slave Pits and subject to the module success, will hope to run the subsequent A-series in order, which would include the Slave Lord Dungeon escape too.
So I shall wish you success but count myself out.

Welcome Aboard Diogenes!
I am interested in playing, posting daily shouldn't be an issue for me.

Re: Original Dungeons & Dragons - Tournament Game
Rex, glad you can make it, feel free to roll up two characters, and we can get started whenever you're ready.
Straither, I wouldn't worry about this scenario being too similar to A4, that's just one module amongst many that I took some general inspiration from, rather than any specific elements being lifted.
Also, I'm not sure why the first message double-posted, I thought I only posted once.

Re: Original Dungeons & Dragons - Tournament Game
You will need to set up a campaign number for me to roll against first. Plus I have a couple of questions (rolling method, classes, which supplements if any).
Re: Original Dungeons & Dragons - Tournament Game
How do I set up a campaign number? I don't know what that is.
As for rolling method, 3d6 down the line, usual order (STR, INT, WIS, CON, DEX, CHA) and available classes are Fighting-Man, Magic-User, and Cleric. 3 LBB rules, I usually don't use any of the supplements, like Greyhawk or whatever.

Re: Original Dungeons & Dragons - Tournament Game
You will need to to register with the Dice Roller forum, a link to that should be at the top left of your screen. How do I set up a campaign number? I don't know what that is.
You register in that forum the same way as the Unseen Servant forum, the are relationally linked but separate entities. Once registered there you can 'create a new character's or 'create a campaign'. Pressing that will generate a campaign ID number. All players in your game should be added to a group profile, (how to do that is answered in the above FAQ's) and then any rolls players make are linked for transparency purposes to one game archive.
Re: Original Dungeons & Dragons - Tournament Game
You can make a request in the Admin thread to get a forum for your game once we have enough players and they will give to instructions as well and links to how to guides, although Straither has covered most of it already. You can also just ask and someone will usually step up and help out.
Re: Original Dungeons & Dragons - Tournament Game
I’ll set up a game when I get back home on Tuesday, I’m visiting a friend inter-state at the moment.
Re: Original Dungeons & Dragons - Tournament Game
Thanks. I will keep an eye out for it.

I'm interested.
