The Margrave's Council (Summer 669)
Re: The Margrave's Council (Summer 669)
How would Morwen feel about using her folk as aerial recon over the orcs? What would be the best time of day to maximize view and minimize risk? That should give us a better idea on numbers, see if they have prisoners and what-not, and where they are concentrated.
In reality, any party with a few Ravenkin will benefit from the extra view.

Morwen has no problem allowing her folk to be used for recon purposes. She can probably make a few talismans to help with that, too. Macnav would probably be better at coordinating the logistics.
Re: The Margrave's Council (Summer 669)
JJh will encourage the Dawi to join in the northern march, as it should make scouting KG easier by slowing down a threat. In theory, the initial KG scouting could happen after the northern march, and before winter. That would give the cold season to prepare and plan.
Re: The Margrave's Council (Summer 669)
Dramm suggests that he might be useful to guard the northern scouts. Barnaby eloquently urges his companion's merit: "Be it dragon or giant, Sir Dramm is unafraid and competent to slay. With musical accompaniment to rouse the hearts even of dubious comrades, our force may strike a mighty chord!"
Neil Gaiman: "I started imagining a world in which we replaced the phrase 'politically correct' wherever we could with 'treating other people with respect', and it made me smile."..."I know what you’re thinking now. You’re thinking 'Oh my god, that’s treating other people with respect gone mad!'"

Re: The Margrave's Council (Summer 669)
The consensus is to go to Springkeep.
The Council goes on long into the night until finally a consensus is reached and the details of the undertaking are settled. In the morning they will muster their forces and then head north along the High Road to Springvale. It will take a few days to make the army ready to march, but by weeks end they will muster in Ravenswell and then move north in force. With all available soldiers armed with shovels and picks as well as as many laborers as can be enticed by free stew they will make fortified camps each night by digging earthworks.
It will be four days from Ravenswell to Springkeep and so they will need to prepare three camps.
As the army plods on every knight and rider of the realm will be canvassing the path with an eye on the Northwood.

Re: The Margrave's Council (Summer 669)
The Margrave will muster his forces and march when ready. The Abbot will wait with him.
Jiho needs to get word to Eastfort to muster. He can send someone or do it himself.
The Dawi have to go to Eastfort and rally their people. Mag and Gurav have to go in person.
Morwen will return to Ravenswell.
Dramm can stay with the force or not as he prefers.
Earnan?

Re: The Margrave's Council (Summer 669)
While the late night meeting still swam through his head, along with memories of shared smiles and glances with Fylla, Ji-ho pushed himself to focus on the moment. It was early, but not too early. Aneq had sent half his force, along with half of Zruk's riders, as a guard for Gurav, Magarra, and their people. Eastfort and Goblintown would muster quickly, the Dawi would get the siege weapons broken down and onto carts quickly, and everyone should be at Ravenswell on time.
"A new account, sir?" The banker looked from Malte to Ji-ho. The banker had made a good bit off of transactions in the past year, and as always, seemed happy to see the young lordling.
"Yes. Malte will administer it, and I'd like to keep things clearly seperated," Ji-ho said, smiling.
"Of course, sir." The banker took the large bag of coin, and paused. Not many saw coin from a dragon horde, and he wanted to inspect each and every farthing. "You cousin is a meticulous counter, let me write this out now. I'll count it and send it over the verification this afternoon, if that's acceptable?"
Ji-ho nodded, and stood. "Very, and thank you. I appreciate you taking care of this for us, and look forward to continuing to grow together."

Malte smiled as he walked through Borderton with Sir Ji-ho. It hurt not one bit to be seen with the famous lord, even though everyone knew Malte worked for him. Being reminded of that would help business continue to grow.
Nor did it hurt that Ox and a few of The Lads stayed off to the sides and kept an eye out for trouble. Malte wasn't sure who would be dumb enough to attack his lord, but there was always someone. And, of course, The Lads didn't mind associating, even at a distance. They had gotten to talk to Sir Ji-ho; heard his accent and seen his complete lack of social expectations. Malte wasn't really sure how to explain that to anyone, he just let it happen and enjoyed watching the subsequent confusion. Ox and The Lads walked a little taller now. Lucky had talked about fighting alongside their lord, how he got everyone to give just a little more to win. But now...now The Lads understood it.
Still, there was work to do. "The goblin workers have asked for things and I've gotten them taken care of; some tools, cloth, different foods, and beer."
There was a slight disdain in his voice on that last word. While Borderton's beer was, well, okay; Eastfort's was so much better. Malte was looking forward to a barrel or two, something to tide them over until they could visit Eastfort proper. Malte still hadn't seen the new town buildings and Maja was severely lacking in her letter writing. Of course, if the pass was blocked for a few seasons then the price of Eastfort's beer would go up. And they'd have more production capacity by next spring. Malte smiled, and then got back to the conversation.
"Zruk seemed confused that the and his people (1) would get paid in human coin. You were wise to ration it out by the week, much less chance of someone blowing their entire wage on something unuseful, and skipping out on food. The workers you brought have done an excellent job, and once Zruk showed up and started talking to them face to face, well, they made the local laborers look a bit lax. I think most of them have gained a few pounds too, once they realized that we'd get local food for them." Malte smiled to himself, and didn't mention that local food production was one more enterprise Sir Ji-ho's money had bought into. A few of the buildings near the Polite Society Meeting House needed renovation, and with an army in the making then finding people who wanted to leave a bad life and earn good coin was a lot easier. Buckets of porridge in the morning, loaves of bread and barrels of stew in the evening. There were deals to be made, even though Lucky reminded them all that bringing people up and along was the real business.
Well, that and...
Malte blushed, and kept walking. Business was very good.
(1) Kruk has more riders and laborers than Vuird's duty requires. Thus JJh is paying them in coin, to get Vuird some coin. I'm not sure what the split is between "to the workers" and "to Vuird", but Malte is administering the Borderton bank account for Vuird.

Re: The Margrave's Council (Summer 669)
Earnan stays in Borderton while the army musters. There is plenty to see in the town and no shortage of people to talk to, or watch.
Re: The Margrave's Council (Summer 669)
Let us skip ahead from here.
The messengers are dispatched and you are moving in force through friendly, well patrolled areas until you leave Ravenswell so we will pick up in the shadow of Morwen's tower.
The seventh day arrives and the strongest force seen in the Borderlands in many years sprawls out in the fields around Ravenswell.
Sir Kelemer, the Margrave, brings:
Knights: 1 Troupe
Squires: 2 Troupes
Heavy Infantry: 2 Platoons
Heavy Crossbows: 1 Platoon
Light Infantry: 3 Platoons
Archers: 3 Platoons
Longbows: 1 Platoon (yeomen with family lost to the logging camp massacre out for blood)
Dawi Warriors: 1 Platoon (volunteers from the militia looking to crack some Urk skulls.)
Dawi Quarrelers: 1 Platoon (likewise)
Sir Tylar, the Margrave's vassal bring his Order of the Blue Lily consisting of:
Knights: 1 Troupe
Squires: 1 Troupe
Maggara and Gurav Thanes of Kraka Grak bring:
Warriors: 1 Platoon
Quarrelers: 1 Platoon
Slayers: 1 Platoon
Sappers: 1 Platoon (includes the Thunderers.)
Skirmishers: 2 Platoons (crafters and skilled laborers, includes the Rangers)
Elder Tomas is currently accompanied only by his personal guard consisting of:
Paladins: 1 Troupe
Aspirants: 1 Troupe
Crossbows: 1 Platoon
The Eldar do not form a military unit but each of those present will contribute as they are able. If there is a need they defer to Ryfon as their commander. He is the eldest, kin to Dame Fylla, and the only one of their number that considers himself a warrior for he has mastered the Bladesong.
The basic unit of mass combat is the Platoon. I have rounded a few of these to make it work. A Troupe half as many men as a Platoon, but as many or more bodies due to mounts).
Leitz and Roo: Please respond with which of your forces are going to Springvale.

Re: The Margrave's Council (Summer 669)
And we need to arm Morwen's troops with as much Fire Breath as we can. Not sure how much is left, and how easy it is to make more. And who can help with the work.
I'll work on the details of the troops today, of the 100, it's mostly LI. I need to figure out which Henches are along as well. Will get that done this afternoon.

Unit Type | Unit Composition |
---|---|
Platoon | 30 foot |
Troupe | 15 Mounted |
Company | 4 Platoons/Troupes |
Battalion | 4 Companies |
Brigade | 4 Battalions |
Major Henches include Rolton (along with Voros and Samwood: they can lead knights or join another unit), Hemia (below), Darfilla, Coldred, Varda, and Arforth (with the Ravenkin), Toth, Rodrik, Winifred, and Olgle as scouts. The orcs will likely have been raiding farms and such for a while, so JJh wants the scouts and Ravenkin aerial troupes to be on the lookout for captives.

Re: The Margrave's Council (Summer 669)
Morwen will remain at Ravenswell until she is needed in the north and work in her lab. She sends Macnav with a Platoon on Ravenfolk Skirmishers, a full half of her available forces. Living forces at least.
Before the army leaves she says to Jing Jiho, "When you have need of me, send word with your Raven Sword and I will ride the wind to you."

Re: The Margrave's Council (Summer 669)
I have returned. Leitza and I will do some rolls for the logistics and massed army stuff by PM. This will set the backdrop for the next stage. It will take several weeks most likely which is why Morwen is staying in her lab for now so she can keep working on her latest project and hope to have it finished for the next adventure.
