Dorian glances down at their joined hands, noting how easily she had taken his without hesitation. The contrast between her warmth and his own tempered reserve is not lost on him. For a brief moment, he considers pulling away—not out of rejection, but from habit.
Yet something in Liviel’s open expression, in the way she so effortlessly draws him into the moment, stays his hand.

"Gold that buys health can never be ill spent, Nor hours laid out in harmless merriment." ~ John Webster

Twilight will soon arrive and the party is at its most loud and raucous crescendo. At least four bards stroll about entertaining the crowd as well as a couple of jugglers and a band of mummers.

Kade and Ruskin need not be told twice for they are off before the end of Torvik's statement, moving into the crowd and on to a circle where a makeshift dance line has formed. As Torvik raises a toast to Mallorean, the bard breaks into a battle song favored by the Rangers of the Horn. Several in the crowd stop and drop coins in his feathered cap.

Lucente takes a seat beside Thena, "Hmm, I had forgotten about you giving her permission to speak. Perhaps I should tear up that letter afterall," he grins as he sips his wine. "I expect I can overlook that. She will be back to her duties with the garden and latrine, so long as she keeps chattering to her plants, I see no harm in it. They are good group and devoted to our lord. We are lucky to have all of them here." He pauses a moment and glances at the crowd picking out each of them with his eyes, "If you have need, I suppose I can assign one to be your attendant, if you wish."

Erel listens to Bryne's apprehensions about the feelings she has. He places a hand on her shoulder, "I have lived long enough around my mother and Mave, to not doubt a woman's intuition. But I have enough confidence in you, and those who travel with you, to know that it is evil that should be fearing what is to come. You have Mave, Thena, Torvik, Niserie and the others with you. And this newcomer Dorian seems a solid sort. That is a formidable group. And I know your brother Paden well. If anything untoward happens at the tourney, I'm sure you will all set it right. Now get yourself something to eat. You can't banish evil on an empty stomach."

Liviel smiles at Dorian's response, the scars she received in the Wolf's Grotto still visible on her face, "A plate full of food and my favorite some sweets should do us both some good. Then perhaps you'd indulge me and tell me of your homeland. I've never been to the Vale but my uncle was a Knight there before he met his unfortunate end." She leads him to the nearby table and grabbing one plate for herself, she hands him another.

Mave, clearly getting the cold shoulder from Athan and Morwen, moves off nodding for Wilwarin to follow. The elf, ever reserved and unsure of this land follows her and the two move to talk with Lord and Lady Gallowhawk. The royal couple are interested in hearing where Wilwarin disappeared to at the Vagary fair.

Mediphera seems geniunely happy at the gathering. The normally reclusive witch tapping her feet in time to the music and holding De'Ath's hand. The duo could easily be mistaken for mother and daughter by those who do not know them. They stay close to Abaessa, who sits in a chair near her father, clearly not herself yet. Mediphera after offering a bit of meat from her plate to Ducky, then clears her throat and turns to Niserie, "I...I've been thinking of something I wish to discuss with you sister. I..." She doesn't get more than those words out before a big, rather handsome man in a town guard uniform approaches Niserie, a beaming smile on his face, "Ma'am, one of my brothers in the guard bet me that I couldn't get the most beautiful woman at celebration to have a dance with me. Could I impose on you for one brief fling round the dancing area? It would mean so much to me."

Dorian takes the plate from Liviel with a nod of gratitude

He rests one forearm against the table, his posture composed yet at ease, the other hand idly turning the plate as he surveys the meal before him.

“The Vale is a place of contrasts,” he begins, his voice steady but warm. “It is as unforgiving as it is beautiful, as cold as it is full of life. The mountains rise like sentinels, wrapped in mist, their cliffs so sheer that even the bravest hesitate before the drop. But in the valleys, where the rivers carve their paths, there is peace—great forests of evergreens, lakes so clear you can see the sky staring back at you. The wind is constant, whispering secrets through the peaks, and the air…”

He inhales as if recalling the scent. “It carries the scent of pine and frost, crisp enough to remind you that you are very much alive.”

His green eyes search Liviel’s face, gauging her reaction before he continues, his tone turning more reflective. “Your uncle must have carried that air with him, even after he left. Some places shape a man so deeply they never truly leave him.

"Yes dear," the swashbuckler says to Wilwarin, "what happened at the fair? We feared the worst, though of course I am very happy you returned. Spill it my friend." Her amber eyes look questioningly at the elf magus.

Thena

Relaxes, just a bit, in between sips of wine while chatting with Lucente: Jancinthe would make an excellent attendant, she is following my steps in service to Tempus through combat. I will take you up on that offer as well, if she is amicable as well. I'll pass most of the Gallowhawk's award along to your flock, 150 sovereign, before we leave for the tourney. Can you tell me anything about that?

Nis smiles at her group, a glass of hardly touched honeyed wine in one hand as things finally feel like they are settling back into place. A small furrow forms on her brow at Abasessa's state; she had been through so much. It would take time of course, but her mind was already turning as she placed a comforting hand on her friend's shoulder. Her attention turns to Mediphera as her sister speaks. Eyes of emerald meeting those of ever-changing hazel, now green with a tan ring so light it almost flickered like gold in the candlelight of the hall. A soft smile quirked up one corner of elven lips, but the eyes gazed with openness and honest trust as her more studious companion began to speak... just as the young guardsman approached.

Nis gives a small start, perhaps put-on or a faint reaction to the sudden approach. Oh! Oh my goodness, how flattering! But honestly, you don't need my permission. You should ask her yourself! Nis smiles broadly with a spark of benevolent mischief. Patting Abaessa's shoulder she gingerly scoops her friend's fingertips with her other hand. Abaessa, my dear, this young man has mustered up his courage to ask you to dance! He does seem quite sweet, perhaps you should give him a chance? She leans down and whispers to her friend, for her ears alone. A little frivolity might be just the ticket. And if his breath is bad or you just can't stand his two-left-feet just give me the signal and I'll cut in. ok?

Making sure the young man has no time to protest or clarify she keeps right on bubbling at the pair, Now Abaessa is a beauty to be sure, but she is also the strong silent type; so you must be on your absolute best behavior young sir. She advises him, For if she finds you too forward she may be forced to reprimand you. She adds in a lightly teasing manner. Turning back to Abaessa she says quietly but not so softly that he cannot hear, He really is kind of cute, you know. she grins widely at her friend. In such manner she bustles the two out onto the dance floor, keeping one eye on them. [although if Abaessa firmly does not want to dance, Nis will not try to force her]
Once that is done and the pair out of ear-shot she turns back to Mediphera with a conspiratorial grin, A little salve for the wound, I hope. Now, dear. Where were we...? she asks, taking the dark-haired witch's hand.

"Politicians and diapers must be changed often, and for the same reason." ~ Mark Twain

"The King...," Lucente rolls his eyes a moment, "he is a good man but I fear he has sat the throne too long. He grows old and weak and has allowed the three kingdoms to grow apart. A dying union is tragic when there is so much evil about. And the best of his sires died fighting the northmen. One is a greedy sot who caused the rift between us and the Vale. The other is a politician and little else, in my view, though I suggest you determine that for yourself. Of the younger heirs and the reported bastards, I know little. Unfortunately, the politician, the eldest, and the fool he made Prince of Ravenscar are next in line to the throne. Neither would unite the kingdoms and would likely drive them further apart. We need a leader to inspire us to join against the forces of darkness as we did so long ago." He sips his wine, "Some would call such words traitorous, but if truth makes me a traitor so be it. I will speak to Jacinthe and see if she is willing. Considering the way she goes on about you, she likely will be. Teach her, and make her a fierce warrior against Tempus' foes."

Mallorean finishes his song and approaches Torvik, after grabbing a jug of wine. "So commander of all he surveys, what brings you to the land of gulls and wayward women?" He takes a swig from the bottle and then offers it to Torvik.

Liviel plays gingerly with the food on her plate, more interested in Dorian's words than the plate before her. "You make it sound like paradise," she says with a smile, "A place a bit intimidating and dangerous but also quite intriguing...much like yourself." She takes a bite of fruit, meeting his gaze, "My uncle left when my sister and I were but children. And unfortunately, I did not see him again until Morwen brought his body home. My father always referred to him as a Valeman even though he was not born there. Sadly, they now lie side by side in Lupre." She takes a sip of wine her eyes looking down, "You will watch after Athan won't you? Morwen would be very upset if he isn't returned in one piece."

After Bryne gets something to eat, Erel dining beside her. The Gallowhawk knight leans over and whispers to her, "I hear dance can drive away all dread. Shall we give it a try?"

Wilwarin looks at Mave in silence several moments before responding, "Best not to speak of it here. Later when we are inside far from prying ears...but I will say, I have some information on Zaella."

Abaessa shrugs, knowing she has little hope of dissuading her friend. She approaches the guard who is still a bit confused by Niserie's response and taking his hand leads him to the dancing area. As they start to dance, Abaessa flashes her a thumbs up sign. Mediphera can't help but laugh at what transpired. And then she continues their conversation in Vagary, "I cannot help but think you and De'Ath were brought to me for a reason. And I feel three goddesses are pushing me in one direction with yours and Abaessa's joined by Vör, the Lady of Awareness, whom I follow, have shown me that I am to be the third of the protective circle to watch over De'Ath. So, if you will have me, Octavius and I will be joining you on your journey," said somewhat nervously as if she isn't still fully sure.

The music continues as does the dancing and feasting though Twilight has fully arrived and shadows dance within the compound in praise of his coming.

Dorian watches Liviel carefully, his expression softening at her words. He swirls the wine in his glass before taking a measured sip, considering her for a moment before speaking.

“Paradise is rarely without its thorns,” he muses, a wry smile touching his lips.
“The Vale can be both—intimidating, yet undeniably beautiful. Much like yourself, if I may be so bold.”

His gaze lingers on hers, but as she speaks of her uncle and father, his smile fades into something more thoughtful. He dips his head slightly, a quiet acknowledgment of her loss. “The name of a place matters less than the ties that bind a man to it. The Vale must have shaped him, whether he was born to it or not. And now, he rests with your father. I am sorry for your losses, Liviel.”

At her request, Dorian straightens, the hint of an amused glint returning to his eyes.
“Athan is more capable than he looks, but yes, I will watch over him. I have no desire to incur Morwen’s wrath—or yours, for that matter.” He lifts his glass slightly in a quiet toast. “You have my word, Milady.”

Thena

Thank you for the background brother, my sight is a bit clearer. I will be by on the morrow or the next day to pick up the letter and drop off the offering. Send Jacinthe to me if Tempus wills it in the morn. Thank you brother. She drips his shoulder as she gets up. Tempus be praised!

Thena will circulate for a bit, mostly fishing for information, before turning in for prayers and sleep early.

Nis watches closely at first, making sure Abaessa is not in any distress. If the young man behaved himself in a gentlemanly way, she might let him win his bet (if bet it truly was and not just some line).

When Mediphera shares her revelation, the Fey witch bursts into a rapid series of small claps with an excited squeal before hugging the woman. Oh! I was so hoping you would! You know, I could tell the instant we met, it was fate to cross paths again! I'm so glad you and the studious Mr Octavius Esquire will be joining us! pulling back from the hug she smiles at her friend, spreading it also to De'Ath. I think it will be well recieved by our little group. She says, watching the younger girl to see if she knew about this or overheard.

Taking Mediphera's hands, she draws the other woman to her feet. We should celebrate! This is a feast, after all. Let's dance!

"Zaella?...," she looks questioning at the elf. "Her uncle and his band were below helping us." She knew further questioning of the elf was likely to yield little more for considering the circumstances, so she remain silent on the subject.

“Why do you go away? So that you can come back. So that you can see the place you came from with new eyes and extra colors. And the people there see you differently, too. Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving.” ~ Terry Pratchett, A Hat Full of Sky

The celebration continued far into the night....

Mallorean gives a wry grin at Torvik's jest. He responds to the commander's question saying, "I travel to Lionsgate to play at the tourney. To gather coins and the company of good women or not so good women depending on which the coin will attract." He catches sight of a rich merchant's wife and lifting the bottle high, drains it and sets it upon a nearby table before nodding once at Torvik and dashing off while strumming his lute.

Thena strolls through the crowd gleaming bits of conversion here and there when not catching the eyes of the revelers who heap praise upon the hero. Stray bit of conversation heard as she steps through...*I hear the black sheep is going to represent the family at the tourney.*....*That Mave such a beauty though it looks like she's dressed in a trollop's widow weeds.*....*I hear there's Valemen about, planning attacks here or at the tourney. May the gods save us.*....*They say Tempus himself fought in the battle below. That's how the heroes beat them witches so easily.*....*Elves led the heroes I hear. Them two that's here now were the ones. I hear they came from Birdsong.*....*By the gods, Mediphera Gaunt. I bet you she was in league with them witches. Never trust a one of them.*....

Mave's thoughts of Zaella, clouded her mind. They had traveled together from the roads north of here to Lupre and then to the Wolf's Grotto and back to the battle of Lupre. She recalled Zaella's ride into the portal trying to attack the two wizards that led the attack. Would the two ever meet again? Wilwarin's words made her think that might be a possibility yet.

Liviel nods, "Thank you for your thoughts. And I shall hold you to your word sir," she says to Dorian. She grins mischievously, "Did Lathander give you two left feet? If not, I expect you to give me a twirl round the dancing area. Do they teach dancing to Valemen or are all they too busy fighting and slaying dragons?"

Erel frowns a moment looking at Bryne, "I am a knight as you well know. And there is little difference between battle and dance. Save that preferably when you dance, you don't kill your partner. Isn't that the gist of it?," he grins and grabs her hand, "Let the battle begin."

De'Ath seemingly repeats Nis' actions in unison at Mediphera's declaration. The elder witch almost appears embarrassed at the reactions of the two, before a wide smile appears on her face, "Dance...it has been many a year since I have done so...not since..." her voice trails off, "Why not, it's a celebration so we must...celebrate," she then grabs Nis and De'Ath by the hands and starts towards the dancing area with a lightness in her step.

My next post will move us along to the next day and identification of magic items.

Giving Liviel an appraising look before offering his hand, Dorian confides.. “Fighting and dragon-slaying do keep us busy, but we Valemen know how to celebrate victory, too.”

He holds her hand and makes room for her to stand. “Try to keep up” he says with a smooth smile, as he leads her to the dance floor.

Torvik chuckles and waves a salute to Mallorean. "Sounds bout right, fer a bard anyway." he says in a jovial tone not to anyone specifically. The commander looks around to see what Vari and the other two are up to hoping they are having a good time.

Dances her way around the celebration, imbibing perhaps a bit too much and eating some sweet pastries. She looks at the pastries and then sees Torvik. She is sorely tempted to toss a pie his way but considering her parents are watching, she manages to restrain herself.

"Our revels now are ended....
And, like this insubstantial pageant faded,
Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff
As dreams are made on, and our little life
Is rounded with a sleep." ~ William Shakespeare, The Tempest

The celebrants having strung the stars with their feast and dances retire for a pleasant sleep, perchance to dream...or perchance to sleep off what they have imbibed.

Morning breaks and over a hearty breakfast, Lord Gallowhawk tells the group, he has secured a vessel to take them directly to the port city of Lionsgate, where the tourney is being held. The ship is called The Maiden's Bounty and his lordship has hired it for you and your mounts to sail to the city, a voyage of about three days, assuming the weather holds and no pirates or sea creatures impede their journey.

Malaguerre and Sigismund along with the wizard's other apprentices soon arrive to assist you in identifying items. (Up to ten.)

Those who are leaving your group returning to Lupre make preparations for their journey, his lordship granting a royal escort to the town of six of his best guards.
