010: Off to The Deeps

Jaelah speaks to Roscoe over their link. "See if you can find out who lives on this floor in the apartments we passed." She reaches out to read the people coming up the stairs.

That place, once you get the directions to get there, is fancier with beefier bouncers. It feels mobbed up even before you get to the front door and get the arm block from a bouncer. "We're full."

Walt, having expected the door bouncer to want a “tip” had bills ready. He leans in a little:

”Didn’t I just see three people leave? Someone who looked like this?” And he presses over 3 large…

"Auctioneer De Silva, Your Excellency," he says with a bow. "If you intend to bid, you'll need to provide some bona fides and provide proof of solvency sufficient to cover your bids. The latter can be arranged via a local banking entity willing to back you."

I was thinking that the certified check would be something raised on a local bank from our account to prove bona fides. I would imagine instead the deposit of 100 million credits in a local bank would've done the same thing. I knew they would be asking about financial solvency having been to several industrial equipment auctions.

William provides his Imperial identification along with his immigration papers. "If you query the firm of Banks, Poppins and Dawes under my name you will find a full financial portfolio."

He replies to Garvin via link. "Bastards. See if you can keep them off my target and fuck them up on the others. We may very well get messed up with these gangsters sooner or later."

I was meandering around the Mongoose forums and they inadvertently talked about something like what we are dealing with: having you cash and credit with you.

Since storage is effectively infinite, it does not take up much room to have a 1 Google-digit encryption validating your current credit balance, updated every time the ID or device is used or accesses the planetary or starbase database.
At least, that's how I explain it to my players.
Doesn't sound as hand-wavium that way. It just works, because they've had 5,000 years to MAKE it work.

I'm handwaving that there are theoretically uncrackable (though you folks have the tools to do so) bank cards with the major banks that can handle purchases wherever the person is, so long as the place is spacefaring and the tech for this will have made its way there. For less advanced societies, yeah, that wouldn't work. In the case of the auction, a scan of your card will verify you meet the minimum balance to bid. Problem solved.

“Of course. The business description has already been circulated or you wouldn’t be here. There is a minimum bid to start things and there must be three independent bidders to make for a valid auction. Once the first bid is registered, I will increment by the minimum amount though a bidder is free to bid higher. Five bids must be registered before the potential sale becomes live. The sky is the limit so far as bids though there are rarely bidding wars. I am paid on a commission basis, so a higher selling price is in my interests. Once bidding starts, the auction continues until there are no more bids and if the threshold is met, the payment is made to the auction house and the business becomes the property if the highest bidder. Do I need to clarify any aspects of the process for you?”

There are people in the stairwell and in. Lift coming up. ETA for the lift: 15 seconds. The stairwell will be a few seconds later than that. You can tell they are from the security service and are responding to a call of someone intruding on a crime scene.

The server will escort you past a pair of bouncers and into a well lit private hallway leading to a single door. He raps on it and briefly sticks his head in to speak with someone.

Then he turns back to you three. “They’re ready for you, sir. I hope your evening meets your expectations.”

When the three of you enter the room, you find that it is indeed spacious and well appointed. It also has several people already in it.

The problem is that it is dominated by a large bed and the six ladies there are very scantily clad. This isn’t a gambling room.

Walt grins crookedly at Bona then at Arkar. He just looks at Arkar…
