Slavers & Sewers: explorations. 'Team Alpha'

#1 Post by Straither »

Sneaking in the tunnels:

Descending about thirty feet of rough cut steep stairs, the tunnel is dug out of the earth and the structure is supported by thick beams and planking every few feet to hold back subsidence and keep the ceiling from collapsed. The stairs are well worn and the plank risers are slippy with mud. In the rush to pass the Kennels undetected and with the dimmest of lanterns to illuminate your steps, a foot misplaced is an accident waiting to happen.

Actions each person please give a Dexterity [1d20] check. Succeed and keep your feet, fail and slip the last 15'ft taking -1hp damage from the mud-cushioned fall.

Slip on stairs: fall damage [1d6]=1

The stairs descend to an earthen passage, it is about 8'ft wide and just a bit more than that high. The passage goes left and right, the former narrowing to half the width, a stinky rotting smell comes from this direction. The latter direction seems to be the way those orcs and the ogre took judging from the recent footprints that lead that way. There are no other telltale sights or sounds.

Rushing down the staircase after his companions, Olleg trips and stumbles down the last half of the stairs, landing hard at the bottom. Unfazed, the dwarf jumps to his feet and reorients himself. Concerned that the party no longer has either of their thieves, Olleg begins doing his best to check the surrounding passage for any suspicious construction.

The magic user manages to keep his footing, and remains on the lookout.

"Shall we try to chase down the ogre and orcs?" - Edel offered a whispered suggestion.

Mortar glides down the muddy steps with ease, trying to secure any of the less graceful folks who are still accompanying the group as they all descend.

Dex Check (16) [1d20]=12

He uses his Gnomish underground senses to have a quick look around at the shoddy construction before addressing the others. (I will assume we can control the area of the silence spell by tossing it in front of us, so we can still communicate verbally.)

"Good job, gang! Now.......This is where your old uncle Mortar-Mer has a little trick up his sleeve." He pulls out what looks like a common stick before waving it in the air and looking down both directions of tunnel. (using one charge of his magic wand to locate any nearby enemies)

"Let's remember to stay together and help each other out down here now. Nobody else runs off on their own, okay? I would agree with Edel on following the patrol from behind, but I would like to get an idea of what lies this other way first, so we know if it's a safe area for us to hide out if we find that necessary in the near future."

After getting the reading from his wand, the Gnome will take a quick look down the stinky tunnel first using his infravision, unless of course he senses enemies in that direction.

Durrant Winterflame - Human Magic User

While physically frail, the little mage's feet are nearly as nimble as his mind, allowing him to easily make his way down the stairs unharmed. He will stay out of the way of the demihumans who are using their special senses to ascertain the safety of their current location.

Excavated Tunnels under the Ruin.

Olleg slips, taking with him Rogger & Esther, -1hp each, they land in a heap at the bottom of the excavated stairs.

The dwarf sets about testing the buffeted support struts in case the crash into them is going to weaken into a full blown tunnel collapse. He can reason from his mining experience that the tunnels are generally sound and the woodwork planking thick enough to buttress a heavy weight. Fire remains a potential hazard or any kind of blast or physical area of effect spell could also weaken the supports. Should a collapse happen, maybe a ton or more of earth could fall in an area approximately equalling a man sized radius and the potential for being buried alive is quite high. There no hidden construction and the muddy stairs are just slippy not trapped.

Once everyone is on their feet, the group can explore a little. A dimmed lantern lit, just enough radiance to assess your immediate surrounds, anyone striking a torch or using a lantern, please indicate.

Going up the right tunnel are distinct boot prints that lead away for about thirty feet, passing a small knee high burrow before tacking in a NE direction. The prints continue onwards that way for the best part of 50'ft or more. Firelight from a torch casts flickering shadows on the wall at the end of the tunnel which must open into a small cave like chamber. Hushed voices talk in a 'pidgin' common.

The burrow hole is enough for an unarmoured Halfling to wriggle into like a worm, a tight squeeze, if such an idea was thought.

To the left, the passage arches to the south and west going about thirty feet before opening to another larger chamber. Mortar goes this way, sneaking as best he can to the turn of the passage. He beholds a very strange sight, one not expected at all.

As he nears the end of the passage, a tall figure steps into view as if to block the way. It looks like a giant weasel, a black chitinous insect creature standing upon its two rear legs as a human does. In two other legs it holds crafted shields and over shoulder raises two serrated blades. The creature has bug multi-faceted eyes and a long probing proboscis. Antenna sense the air as it studies the gnome. Mortar can hold forth his wand which doesn't initially ping any sensation or alarm as each seems to 'put the feelers' out to test whether the other is 'friend or foe'. The creature chitters and from around his feet, several giant ants line up and then go scurrying into the passage to follow the gnome. There are five giant ants and you get five wand pulses which indicates these insects have more hostile intent.

Mortar can hurry back to the others knowing the ants follow, giving comrades a heads up on what you have seen.

Actions please and as this passage is quite narrow, two abreast at most, can you organise from left to right, where each character and NPC are as that will help me adjudicate any combat.

(What the heck is that thing? :D)

The elf takes position away from the front line, not equipped or trained for martial combat - his mind tingles with readiness, in case his magic is required.

@Straither - how many fit side by side?

Olleg, Dwarf

Communicating his findings to the others, Olleg reports, "The passage around us is sound enough for now. Fire or a blast of some kind could quickly bring it down around us though, so be careful." Seeing Mortar return with ants on his heels, Olleg draws his sword and moves to join Brick at the front of the group. "Found a few friends, eh, Master Mortar?" asks Olleg, taking a swing at the first ant to come in reach.

Bastard sword (1H) to hit [1d20]=14 for [1d8]=4 damage

Durrant Winterflame - Human Magic User

Durrant is happy to stay in the middle of the group, away from the gi-ant that is threatening the party. He is more than willing to hold a torch or lantern, though he himself does not own one.

Didn't attack outright, eh? Interesting......

Mortar

With 5 giant ants hot on his heels, the Gnome rushes back to the others, hurrying past the big guys with their weapons drawn in hopes he can pass between them without interrupting their attacks.

"I think these guys have a boss back there, and if you think they're giant, wait till ya get a load of that one."

If he can make it by the front line fighters, he will assess the situation from behind, ready to aid the battle with his magic, if necessary.

Thanks for all posting. Ideally someone can stretch the team out and position figures on behalf of the group.

I have Olleg & Brick squishing giant ants on the left. Who backs up into the staircase passage, does anyone check out the smaller tunnel or check out the right hand side where the boot prints follow the orcs & ogre?

I will give a day to set places 'just in case' as the passage is narrow so a marching order type note is needed. If the left is 'front, staircase centre and right hand is party rear' then the 'two abreast' presently looks like this: left to right.

Olleg & Brick
Mortar & Jacupo
Galadria & Esther
Durrant & Edel
Rogger & Vennar

That works.

Mortar looks over the condition of the members of the group.

"Perhaps a little more healing is in order before we head in any further?"

If he can squeeze by the others, the gnome will investigate a few feet into the smaller tunnel carefully, trying to remain unseen himself.

The Tunnels below the Temple Ruin.

Brick & Olleg shield the group and after Mortar passes them by, the pair close ranks and attack the file of Giant drone ants that scurry inquisitively and agitatedly after the gnome. The first pair feel nothing, their minds go blank as they as smashed to pulp by the fighters. The next pair climb over the bodies of their squished nestmates and try to nip back with powerful gripping mandibles.

The fifth ant stops to feel the two corpses, touching them carefully with antenna before stroking each once them turning around to scurry back down the tunnel.

Mortar chooses to investigate the smaller burrow. He crawls head first inside wriggling along for a few yards until he stops. A thought comes to him, too late perhaps. Giant Ants often communicate via pheromone emissions, given off as multi component cues in cuticular hydrocarbon profiles. Emitted when they meet each other, when agitated, when a food source is found or danger alerted ... A feeler strokes his face to bring his conclusion to a sudden realisation that crawling head first into a Giant Ant tunnel looks like asking for trouble. A trouble looks him in the face through another pair of multi-faceted eyes.

Tunnels trouble vs 1: [1d6]=1

Vennar & Rogger move past the burrow as they watch out on the right end of the passage. The flickering of torch light fifty feet plus ahead glows brighter as the orc guards start back down from the cave ahead. Behind the two Orc guards they note the huge bulky frame of the ogre, his shoulders brushing both walls as he swaggers behind. They stop after they turn into the passage, seeing the dimmed lantern light and shadowy figures of the clerics. They don't immediately become hostile, instead call for you to identify yourselves.

Seeing the potential for further conflict and advised to petition for divine aid, Jacupo, Rogger & Galadria minister cure wounds in anticipation of blood being spilt.

CLW on most injured in order [1d8]=4[1d8]=6[1d8]=7 Jacupo +4hp, Rogger +6hp, Mortar +7hp

Actions everyone please
