Vesper opens with her best smile and says "Good Morning! We are hired by the City to deal with an outbreak of rat swarms below the streets. I was hoping to buy a sheaf of arrows and the crossbow in the window to assist us in that endeavour. Of course any reputation we gain will reflect well on the gear we use which will be well displayed in any and all of our dealings with the City".

The young woman's eyebrows go up and she says with concern, "Rats! An OUTBREAK of rat swarms below the streets? Nobody told us about that. Why weren't we told?"

She turns and calls loudly toward the back, "Ma! Have you heard anything about swarms of rats under the streets?"

From the back you hear, "Cara? Rats? Where in the world did you hear that?" and the sound of feet walking hurriedly toward you over a wooden floor.

Emerging from the back room you see a woman of maybe 50, gray streaks in her dark hair and fine lines around her mouth noticeable and between her eyes because of her frown on her face. She is wearing a simple white coif over her hair and a leather apron over a long dress. She is carrying a stave of wood in one hand and a drawknife in the other.

"Who, the hell, is talking about rat swarms?" she says before noticing Vesper and the rest of the party, "Oh! Sorry, didn't know we had customers."

"How can we help you?" she says, but is it clear she wants to ask, "What's this about rat swarms?

Draven leans over to the others and whispers out of the side of his mouth, knowing she can hear him. "I wonder if she can fit both of those shapely feet into her mouth."

Galreth steps forward and looks at the woman who is just a bit older than him and speaks up with a fatherly voice.

"Oh Vesper, I appreciate your storytelling skills, truly, but perhaps this isn’t the time to exercise your... overactive imagination. Words have power, Vesper—use them wisely. Looking at proprietor Ma'am, it's nothing serious—just a routine inspection job for some old tunnels. We’re just making sure there’s nothing dangerous down there. Probably just a rumor. We were hired to check out some unusual activity in the lower tunnels. Water leaks or somesuch, I'm sure. It might not even be rats, but we’re looking into it. Have you noticed anything strange around here Ma'am?"

In fairness, and as my wise comrade points out, that doesn't mean there's any need to upset yourself or indeed that there are any rats at all. We surely won't know until we've looked but I had hoped to have one of your innovative crossbows in hand while I do".

Cara has her hand over her mouth to cover the giggles, but her mother's eyebrows are drawn together and she is frowning, "I won't put up with that sort of talk in my shop!"


"Cara, back of the shop. Go work on those bow strings you started." after Cara scuttles through the curtain into the back room you hear the giggles really break out from several girls voices.

'Ma' looks back and forth between Vesper and Draven saying in a serious tone, "Now if you're serious about doing some business let's get on with it, shall we?"


"We sell all sorts of bows and crossbows, and the arrows and bolts that go with them. We also have darts if you're interested in those." she says, "Yes, we do have a hand crossbow for sale, it's quite pricey and doesn't hit as hard as any of our other bows, but it's good if you need to use it one-handed.

Looking at the bow slung over Draven's back she adds, "We also have a new type of bow we've been working on that is an improvement on the Longbow. It's a bit shorter in length and a little heavier, but has a longer range and hits harder if you'd be interested, I'm calling it the Recurve Bow because the shaft has forward curved tips rather than just the straight staff length curve."

"The hand crossbow is a plinker compared to either a light or heavy one and it's range is oh...well, effective out to 30 feet or so, I'd say." Ma then adds leaning forward so she isn't heard in the back room where her daughters are probably still listening "And no, we don't have an old well that is covered up. Is that were the rats are coming from?"
