The Delivery 6/20 [Tinu, Morvith, Ferd & Robin]

Morvith nods in agreement. "Unexpected allies, but not unwelcome."

Once the party has moved a hundred feet Mazie looks at you and says, "See? Barklings are reasonable folk. You treat them respectfully and they'll do the same with you. You wouldn't want to be their enemy in this forest, though. Remember that."

"We will," tinu replies. She trots forward to take up her post ahead of the wagon, and resumes her watchful walk.

"Curious indeed! Ferd smiles, fascinated. "They reference Goblins, then?" He resumes his post and continues along.

"That was the rumor I heard. Not a raiding party either, a tribe looking to settle as permanently as they ever do." nods Mazie, "In my experience, Goblin tribes usually stay south of here by a good distance. I wonder what brought them up this way?"

"Also, in my experience, Goblin tribes make poor neighbors." says Mazie glancing up at the sun moving toward the west, "We've made good time today, so we're a little ahead of my schedule. I think we'll camp at the 'Old Church' tonight. That's another hour's travel from here. There's fresh water there, some shelter and it's still in the Barkling's territory so it should be as safe as it ever gets out here. Another day like today and we'll get to Jessleton mid day tomorrow."

Morvith begins to chat with Mazie as they walk, his shoulders noticeably looser. He no longer mutters to himself. "You seem to know a lot about them, Mazie. Hopefully it doesn't come to fighting with them, but if it does, can you tell us anything about them? Do they fight in close, or do they use bows or javelins? Are any of them skilled in the arcane arts?" He sounds almost...hopeful? with the last question.

"Barklings or Goblins?" asks Mazie, "The former, I haven't fought with, but expect traps, death from arrows or stones you never see coming, and pack style ambushes from them is what I've heard."

"As for the latter..." Mazie rubs her left arm, "Goblins are skilled with short bows, that's how I got wounded by one back at The Battle for Jasselton. However, as a rule, they prefer ambushes and pile-on attacks all in the dark. They can see a lot better than any of us, even in total darkness, but they have trouble in bright light. Arcane arts, sure. They have the occasional Mage and their Shamans are dangerous for their curses and poisons."

Morvith rubs his chin thoughtfully as he walks beside the cart. "Curses. Huh. Could be useful."

As the long day begins to end and the sun begins to set, the party comes to a set of ruins off to the left of the path. There are the remains of a stone wall with three stone buildings inside its perimeter. The buildings have certainly seen better days with no roofs and much of their walls collapsed, but you can tell they were once well built with fitted stone.

There is something of a path off the road and into the compound made by the stone wall and it is up to this that Mazie Thistle urges her donkeys. Standing in the cart she looks over the remains of the walls and nods, "Seems safe enough."

"I've overnighted here many times." she says, "The Barklings keep this area fairly safe compared to the area south of here. There is a well inside the walls where I can water Toby and Tilly and the light of a small campfire will be hidden if we make it in that firepit over there." she points to a ring of stones laid next to the stone wall and well protected from being seen outside the compound."

Ferd nods, accepting her direction and setting to work. He first checks the immediate area carefully - after all, he has spent many nights trying to avoid being noticed and he learned to be wary of snares and traps that would catch him.

"I will stand a watch as well," Morvith replies. "I'm well-acquainted with the small hours of the night."

"Well then, I guess first watch is mine," Ferd grins. "Better to sleep in until the smell of bacon."

Morvith shudders at the halfling's mention of bacon. "Ugh, I can't eat meat anymore. The smell always reminds me of sacrifices."

[Eris]

Mazie chuckles at the mention of bacon, "Sorry, I didn't bring any bacon. You'll just have to do with standard rations...mostly dried meats and vegetables and water. Unless someone wants to try their hand at hunting, that is?"

OOC: If anyone wants to try hunting right now, it's DC15 to find suitable game, then DC12 to kill said game. Ranger background would give advantage on finding the game, but not killing it.

DC 6 for an encounter:

During the night, the group settles next to a small fire wrapped in blankets or bedrolls and tries to get some sleep...

Ferd's watch passes quietly and he passes it off to Tinu. The night is dark with little light coming from a crescent moon, but Tinu's watch goes quietly as well. Morvith's watch comes as the light from the moon disappears behind the trees making it well and truly pitch black beyond the few feet of dim light from the campfire, now almost burned down to embers. Time passes and Morvith struggles to remain alert...

DC 8: [1d20+2]=6+2=8 Suddenly, Morvith's ears pick up sounds from beyond the wall and he hears the donkey's start to move their feet...they are picking up something, too. Morvith hears a grunting, snuffling, sound and it's paused just outside the stone wall...an animal certainly! Everyone else is blessfully asleep. What does he do?

Morvith steps quickly toward the fire, grabbing one end of a burning branch (if one's not accessible, he'll light a torch from the fire) and walks toward the wall, holding the brand out above his head to illuminate the darkness. He does not disturb his companions, yet.

Morvith lights a torch (T1) and moves quietly toward the wall holding up the light. He sees a large lump of a shape beyond the opening in the wall where you entered. As he watches the lump turns toward him and begins to rise on its hind legs....it's a bear!

As they ascertain the campsite is safe and unroll bedrolls near the fire, Ferd grins at them and begins to tell tales by the campfire. His voice takes on a portentious tone. "Miss Mazie is right, about the ominous things in the woods..." he begins, as sharing campfire stories is the tradition of vagabonds everywhere and he is clearly practiced at such quiet performances as intimate campfires as these, "but have you heard of Dismal Swamp? Why, even across the sea they speak of it, and... the rats. Rats as big as swine. Perhaps they feasted under the table of the cloud giants and came to the earth below when the crumbs ran out. Perhaps they're a foul creation of the dark wizards of Vellon, upon whose lands we now stand..." his tale continues, telling of the coming of the rats, of the outlying village beset by them, and about the triumph of the local heroes, who happen to be an elven ranger, an apprentice wizard, and some wily hobbits. "So, I figure, if the heroes of that little village can defeat such teeth and claws as those, there's naught we should fear here." He smiles, humming and then lightly vocalizing a wordless sean-nós song. The tune seems familiar, but elusive, and he continues until all his companions are asleep.
