Agreed. The Thane and his standard bearer/Champion can kill anyone in the group in one lucky round. If we can take them out that increases our odds, but the other 8 wights are still going to be a struggle.roobeastie wrote: ↑Sun Oct 27, 2024 5:28 pm Morwen figures Macnav can use his lightning bolt javelins, and then is absolutely intending to use her scroll of Lightning Bolt on the Runepriest. After that, Magic Missle all the way.

Re: Discussion (out of character thread)
I'm not sure how many missiles an Oil of Sharpness will cover, but at this point I recommend we weaken the wights with as many missiles as possible. Hemia can take Si-woo's Oil of Sharpness and dip arrowheads and crossbow bolts into it. Korev and Borav also have those potions so we can potentially force the wights to come to us while we shoot them. Of course, if some of the wights move forward and the rune priest stays back then that makes him an easier target for Morwen, Macnav, and Earnan.
Our spell casters are still hindered by the area effects. We have 81 HP of wight to deal with and their two best fighters are more than 30% tougher than any of ours. If we can do this then now is the time. We need your best and most creative thinking or our characters will not survive.
Roobeastie, CarrieVS, tibbius, what can you come up with?

Re: Discussion (out of character thread)
My best idea is that Dramm wades through the skellies with his potion of invulnerability, clearing a path for Barnabas, who then breathes fire onto the Thane before Dramm cuts off the Thane's head.

Re: Discussion (out of character thread)
With the controlled and enhanced skeletons on our side, and three barrels of firesand, Korev can also toss one of the barrels just before Barnaby breathes fire.
How long will it take Dramm to make contact? If Dramm gets into melee too early then it will negate our ability to shoot missiles, unless the wights spread out.
Re: Discussion (out of character thread)
Dramm can smash apart hostile skeletons until missile fire has concluded.
I think it would be a better idea to toss the barrel, then Dramm and Barnaby close in and do their thing. No need to catch PCs in an explosion.

Re: Discussion (out of character thread)
Makes sense to me. Especially the "don't blow up PCs" bit.

Re: Discussion (out of character thread)
Targeting the priest is going to be difficult for a while but might just be we have to bite the bullet and go through some of the other wights first.
If we're using up ___ of Sharpness, might as well use my scroll up first, since by my reckoning it's less valuable than a potion - Earnan can cast it next round, unless Morwen is at a loose end (technically it's better value if she does it but the only benefit is lasting longer so if we expect to use up the results in this fight, it won't matter.)
How does throwing Holy Water work? What's the range and is this an appropriate time to bring it out?

Re: Discussion (out of character thread)
Sharpness affects up to a dozen arrowheads.
Throwing weapons count as 2 arrowheads.
Spears count as 4
Swords and battle axes as 6.
There are no weapons larger than that in this setting.
Holy water can be thrown with a long range of 40feet accurately. After that it can still go 80 but it's a wild throw and will scatter. It makes a 2SD spell attack on a 10foot square splash radius. Undead directly hit suffer the HD of the thrower in damage dice.

Re: Discussion (out of character thread)
Seems like (10' squares yes?) we might be just out that 40' range. I'm not certain exactly which squares we (and the wights) are now occupying after round 1. Or precisely what diagonals count as: I assume it does cost some extra distance. We're not in 5e any more, Toto.
Re: Discussion (out of character thread)
We use trigonometry and I know you can compute the distance knowing that each square is 10' per side. If rounding is needed I usually round toward the PCs' benefit.CarrieVS wrote: ↑Tue Nov 05, 2024 4:55 pmSeems like (10' squares yes?) we might be just out that 40' range. Re: Discussion (out of character thread)
If Dramm doesn't mind waiting until after Morwen, I was going to have Morwen use her scroll of lightning bolt to help clear the path while (hopefully) hitting a few wights. After that, since we have the ghost!dawi taking out the other skellies, Macnav will also be making his way towards the wights to unleash lightning javelin hell, which Morwen will back up with magic missles.
Re: Discussion (out of character thread)
I think that JJh, Si-woo, and Hemia are at the upper door between rooms 3 and 4 according to this map. The reinvigorated Dawi on our side have moved forward to engage, the wights near the far wall are now closed up a little to protect their runepriest, which seems to make them a great target for holy water. However, they are about 80 feet away, so for a good shot you'd need to move forward or let them come to us.CarrieVS wrote: ↑Tue Nov 05, 2024 4:55 pmSeems like (10' squares yes?) we might be just out that 40' range. JJh has taken one potion of invulnerability and his cousin is using him as a shield as they shoot from the door. Hemia the priestess is near the doorway but not in it, she's the center of the bless.
If movement is 1 per 10' then a lightly armored person could get within 40' and throw. Of course, you'd hope the skeleton Dawi enemy and wights ignored you. If you chose to use Dramm or JJh as a shield, I think they move at 30' per round. It would take two rounds to get within throwing range. The good news is the area of effect; if you can hit a group of them, and each takes up to 2 HP, then it's a big win. We have plenty of Holy Water.
Wights drain energy, which is why JJh is trying to get as much done with distance as he can.
Re: Discussion (out of character thread)
The newly empowered ghost!dawi (as Roo puts it) will not make contact this round, they only go 30'. Once they do you will have more ability to maneuver.
Holy water will hit 4 wights or up to 9 skeletons in formation. Undead get no save vs holy water so the splash effect always hits on 2+ and the direct attack needs a 4+.

Re: Discussion (out of character thread)
Or throw the water and light it with flame breath for a holy sauna. .
Re: Discussion (out of character thread)
I think the enemy skeletons are effectively neutralized; JJh and Dramm have potions of invulnerability, the ghost!dawi are moving forward in front of us to draw fire and deal with the melee enemy dawi for a bit.
Hemia will Oil of Sharpness 3 arrows each for JJh, Earnan, and Si-woo, and 3 quarrels for Hodlar. That's 3 rounds of shooting wights, which we may or may not get. Of course, that's good for Shadows, too. Her Bless gives her (and those in it?) the ability to hit the wights when in melee, correct? Does Dramm have a missile weapon?
Borav has Oil of Sharpness that should be able to cover all of the living Dawi throwing weapons. The more we can get on the wights before contact, the better!
If JJh and Dramm slowly move forward in tandem then Si-woo, Earnan (holy water, arrows), Barnaby (flamebreath), Hodlar (crossbow, flamebreath), Korev (toss firesand) can use them as shields. JJh can shoot wights until in melee.
If the holy water is saved for after arrows, it can be thrown into melee with the wights. Since it won't hurt non-undead the "don't shoot into melee" issue should be reduced. Splash effect is good, too. Less damage to a single wight, more to the group of them.

Re: Discussion (out of character thread)
I'll take it for granted that JJh yells something to redirect Dramm from a headlong charge through the skeletons to something more measured.

Guarenteed! I am doing my best to not order PCs around, but JJh is a much better leader.
Re: Discussion (out of character thread)
Everyone, we have been working up to this moment for two weeks. scarik posted a challenging battle scene and we have a good plan. I am confident in us and I look forward to a shared (virtual) toast when the last enemy is fallen.
Re: Discussion (out of character thread)
I started a Current Combat Status thread so we can keep things up to date and easy to find.
Spell casters, please make sure I tracked your SP correctly. scarik, I'm not sure if Borav's animation took SP or not.

Re: Discussion (out of character thread)
In the Current Combat thread, I updated the Combat Sequence at the top of the main post.
