Revisiting The Caves: Pt.2

Haldric keeps watch as the others search the new room. He keeps an eye out and sniffs the air for any invisible enemies lurking around.

"Well, he didn't say much about them, aside from what I already said, though he didn't actually refer to them as halflings. I deduced that based on the furniture in this room and that he thought they would want to talk to Pimlan first ... before the other plans they had for him."

"Yes, the Keep", say Gyb. "Flarlanghn was watching Gyb today. So Gyb's new boots are on the road. With Gyb still inside, just. Time to rest".

Magdal thinks of Dredd when she tells the others of her findings, hoping it was no more than a natural animal kill, but harboring her own doubts about that.

Keya decides to lead the way..........this way. The others all agree to head towards the Keep.

As they walk along the quiet Main Road, Lady LeNore answers Crobues. "Thank you Mr. Knight. They were both good men. I had been there three days until you arrived, I think. It was not a pleasant stay, I assure you. As I said, I am from Greyhawk, but as it happens, I was in route to the very Keep you speak of. I have a sister who lives there, who I hoped to catch up with for a couple of weeks before heading back. Do any of you live at the Keep as well? Perhaps you know her already? Her name is Jocelyn, and I believe she is the local tanner, if you can imagine that."

As the sun continues to drop, the group makes it to the area where the trail heads into the woods along the Bandit Bypass. When they stop to decide to continue through the often watched woods, or stay on the road they know to be washed out near the river, the outdoorsy types notice something strange. The sounds of normal wildlife is almost nonexistent here. There are no birds chirping or squirrels chattering, and the only sound is the light wind rustling through the leaves overhead.

Loyn looks over the shaft sticking into his chest for more of the black substance he saw on the needle, fortunately finding no such thing on the much larger wooden bolt.

After Crabgrass makes a comment about children, Meinhardt figures this room is where the halflings live, remembering and piecing together tidbits of information he heard from the bandits.

Bugs gets no reply from his Da this time after calling into the room.

Certain that a third trap would just be stupid at this point, Rida and Bugs let the light shine in before taking a few steps inside the room.

This area seems to be in stark contrast to the stone and dirt of the rest of the cave system, with rich wall coverings and a thick shag carpet upon the floor, all adorned in bright shades of yellows and greens. The tiny furniture scattered about looks well made and comfortable. An expertly tiled fireplace can be seen on the far wall, the smell of recent smoke still obvious, though no embers glow from the remaining ashes. A rack of 5 finely carved pipes sits atop the mantle, next to a decorative wooden box. A nearby bookcase is filled with several small volumes, and 5 small beds are neatly arranged against one side wall.

Rida jumps and shouts after stepping a few feet inside, hopping from one foot to the other. A sharp pain in one foot is replaced with an even worse pain when his second foot hits the floor. 2 dam Unable to understand what is happening, Bugs walks inside too, seeing no wires but also feeling something sharp digging into one foot after he enters. 1 dam

Loyn thinks he might understand what is happening here, so he remains outside the room.

Gyb tilts back his head and searches the sky. "Perhaps a hawk? The squirrels running off to home and safety?" he offers.

"It could be anything, a bear or a bandit, everyone stand and get ready."

Keya nocks a arrow and looks around.

Rida backs out of the room the same way he came in. "Watch out there is a trap in here."

Lots of scorpions running about? Or a roll of boot puncturing stakes, like a stretched out 'Stinger' mat?

"Sneaky little Hobbitses. Wicked, tricksy, false." the cleric declared once he understands that the Halflings have thrown their lot in with the cultists and bandits.

He will strike a new torch to illuminate the room ahead from the doorway. The bookcase interests him, being a scholarly man. Once the room is declared trap free, he will venture in and check the shelves out.

"I suspect the carpet is concealing an uncouth third trap ..." He lifts an edge of the carpet and carefully rolls it back.

Loyn watches the others jump in pain, “Caltrips possibly…they’ll hurt ya? This room seems to be one hazard after another. Either there’s something in here they don’t want anyone to find or it was created for whom ever to linger long enough into getting caught! Maybe hurry it up!” He turns around to listen and watch for anything coming from behind.

Magdal remains quiet, her eyes scanning the nearby terrain as she says softly, "Predators about for sure."

Drawing his sword and raising his shield, he steps in front of Lady LeNore. "Stay in the middle of us for safety, My Lady." He looks around, trying to see if he can spot any threat.

"We could try the route through the woods we took to get here, but I fear we are being watched." he holds his staff across his chest and looks around.

Bugs stops in his tracks and bends down to examine what he stepped on. "I think the first option, Loyn. Something good here and they don't want to share."

If he finds the offending thing, he will show it to the group.

"I think Loyn is on the right track, though. Catbird likely smashed a bottle here to draw our attention to this room, knowing we'd be tied up dealing with the traps."

Every single member of the party stops, gets themselves ready, and looks around.

Magdal and a few others suggest the anomaly may simply be a predator of some kind.

Stobart suggests they take the distant path they took last time, certain they are being watched here.

The former bandit they brought along with them shakes his head and sputters. "If we come across a bunch of shady looking halflings out here, whatever you do, don't trust em."

Suspecting a trap, Rida grabs Bugs and exits the room, trying to step in the same spots they did to enter. Meinhardt picks up the edge of the plush carpet and gives it a hard whip, watching as several small caltrops fly up into the air before landing back down upon the carpeting again. Now that they have been exposed, they are much easier to see and either collect or avoid completely.

With the threat cleared, Crabgrass moves back inside and heads towards the books. He finds several volumes of cookbooks on the shelves. Each one he picks up is tattered, well used, and filled with hand scribbled notes about how to make the recipes inside even better than printed. He also finds books on History, folk tales, and a few investment guides.

No new threats present themselves, so those standing guard have nothing to report.
