Fingal reels back a couple steps just until he is open to strike with his blade.

The Bigger They Are...
The owlbear is on its last legs, but the bastard won't go down easy. It fights to its death. In desperation it flails about, slicing Wulfhart in the shoulder (3 HP) while missing Fingal.
The adventurers press the attack. Albertus the cleric summons forth divine light. The owlbear's eyes were closed at that instance (made save.)
Brother Bayard's staff lacks the oomph to cause damage. Fingal the thief follows up his backstab with blow that doesn't penetrate its tough hide. Boddin waits for a clear shot that doesn't come.
Eli the elf drops bow, draws sword, and thrusts it deeply into its left side (8 HP.) At the same time Wulfhart hacks into its right leg (7 HP), almost lopping it off.
The owlbear's death scream is piercing. It collapses to the ground quite dead. All is suddenly quiet. Blood soaks into the earth. Clouds part, the sun shines down on you. The owlbear's path behind it is easily seen.

Eli spits on the beast.
We should track to it's lair to kill any young before they grow to cause anymore death.

Boddin emerges from the woods. "I think I preferred the goblins," he says as he looks for his fired arrows.
"Perhaps I should follow the trail to see where it leads before we all go? I may not be much of a warrior, but I am pretty good at not being seen in the forest."

Wulfhart Asgeirsson, fighter.
Covered in blood, the warrior severs one of the owlbear's claws, to keep as a trophy.
"Better watch out, then. One was tough, a pack of them would be our doom."

"Aye, let's follow path after Boddin scouts it," says Foracor the Fleet. "But first let us bury our comrade. And some need healing."

***Albertus, Cleric, After Battling Owl Beast***
Looking over at Luna and the rest of the beaten and battered party, Albertus shakes his head in disbelief."Yes, we need to bury our friend. That is the least we should do. Anyone want to help me?"Going over to Luna he kneels down and says a silent pray. Reaching under Luna's arms and slightly lifting him he drags the body off the road. Finding an area of soft dirt that lies within the shadows of and ancient oak, Albertus begins to dig.

Re: Chp. 2: The Adventure Continues...
While the party buries Luna, Boddin the hobbit slips off into the woods following the owlbear trail. It is not difficult given the broken branches and trodden vegetation. Its meanders for some time, passing a creek; a clearing with a few dead, headless deer; thicker forest; and finally a dark cave mouth.

Actions?

Boddin will get as close to the cave mouth as he can while still under cover of the forest or its floor growth and try to peer inside. If he can't look into the cave mouth without emerging from his hiding, he will not try to. In either case, he'll return to the rest of the party and report what he found.

Boddin / cave entrance
The trees near the black maw of a cave entrance are still too far to see in without revealing self. The daylight robs the hobbit of his infravision. The woods seem too quiet. Boddin returns to camp to report findings.

Bayard raises his holy symbol, and after chanting a short prayer to Tritherion, touches Wulfhart,

Re: Chp. 2: The Adventure Continues...
With some healing done, and a comrade buried, the party follows Boddin to the owlbear's lair.
The cave inside is only about 15' deep. It stinks of owlbear and bodily decay. The nest is against the back wall. A three-foot tall owlbear baby mewls amid bones, branches and a glitter of metal. The young monstrosity is easily put down.
You count at least seven skeletal remains of human, perhaps elf, and dwarf. Victims of the beast you killed, dragged back for leisurely eating. Among the remains you find:
- 323 gp
- 67 sp
- two gems worth 250 gp each
- worn but serviceable splint mail
- a battered by useable buckler shield
- two shields
- 3 daggers
- 2 short swords
- a broken bow and 8 arrows
- dungeoneering equipment: rope, 2 torches, flint and steel, sacks, torn backpack, chalk, 12 iron spikes, thieves tools, holy symbol
- traveling spell book with shield, hold portal, protection from evil
- scroll of detect magic (cleric or magic user)
- a vial of clear sparkly liquid
- a ring with runes on it
