Or there was a lot of grav vehicle use on Beau, especially to the better hunting grounds? Sort of like the Land Rovers, they are built to last but need routine work like all things. Since they were often out in the bush, Mick learned to take care of the vehicles instead of having to call a repair in from way out in the boonies.

Re: Character Generation
Re: Character Generation
Think more like a NEW Grav Vehicle costs more than your BOAT and NEVER BREAKS DOWN ... but a 30 year old Grav Vehicle costs about half the price of your BOAT and is CONSTANTLY needing "encouragement" to start. You had a lot of opportunity to "encourage" the PP & Grav Drive on your Air Raft [Eng-0] ... but not much opportunity to formally study [Eng-1] and become a certified Engineer (rebuilding the thing). The difference between an Air Raft, a Modular Cutter and a Starship when speaking of a Fusion PP and Grav Drive is SIZE. Like Motorcycle vs Pickup Truck vs Tugboat engines ... same skill, different scale.

Option 3: Wing it.
Pilot - 1
Gun Combat - 1
He was kicked out without a commission or promotion
Benefit a Blade
He was a promising young officer candidate (hence the 9 commission) roll, and as part of the hazing he was asked to steal the captains cutlass and was caught. He was discharged from the navy and given a cutlass for his troubles.

First, the list of skills JUST for being in the Navy (EDU 8+)
Admin-0, Blade-0, Computer-0, Electronic-0, Engineering-0, FwdObs/Recon-0, GunCbt (Pistol)-0, GunCbt (Rifle)-0, GunCbt (SMG)-0, Gunnery-0, JoT-0, Mechanical-0, Medical-0, Navigation-0, Pilot-0, VaccSuit-0, Vehicle (air/Grav)-0, Vehicle (water)-0, Vehicle (wheel/track)-0
Second, a shameless REFEREE BRIBE:
Any Character that just happens to originally come from "COBALT" or "TURQUOISE" gains a free VEHICLE (Watercraft)-1 skill that applies to sailboats, motorboats, hydrofoils, submarines ... anything that travels in, on or under the water.
Any Character that just happens to originally come from "BEAU" or "OXFORD" gains a free VEHICLE (wheeled/tracked)-1 skill that applies to wheeled and tracked vehicles ... anything that travels over the ground.
- FYI: I lump AIR together as well, but you need to roll that skill for Vehicle (Grav/Air) that covers things that FLY (including Hovercraft which "Fly" really low).
Third, make a friend:
To borrow a concept from later versions of Traveller.
If two players can agree on a story for how their CHARACTERS already know one another from their past service history ... each Character may gain (select) one additional SKILL-1 or CHARACTERISTIC+1 from their CharGen tables. [This benefit can only be received once ... you cannot know 5 people and gain 5 skills.]
This is to reward "group cohesion" by creating interlinked backstories. It makes the Characters and the adventures more interesting.

Re: Character Generation
If I could suggest a connection … the last 4 years in the Navy of the Blue World Confederation has involved an extensive “piracy suppression” campaign within the actual Blue Systems (Beau, Cobalt and Turquoise) that has actually been less about “piracy” and more about the alien Ursoids clandestinely probing to access strength or weakness. That saw a young Navy pilot assigned to the same anti-piracy Corvette as an old Prospector that found his retirement plans sidetracked by a clause in his contract with Ville d’ Espoir Technologies [VET] which allowed him to be forced into ‘wartime’ service by the Beau System Navy.
You were mostly used as a decoy to draw out enemy ships to gauge their strength. That gave an inexperienced pilot a lot of “combat experience” and an inexperienced Prospector-Engineer a lot of “Damage Control experience”. It also led to a lot of one-sided fights that did not go well for your ship and earned nobody fame or promotions. The Navy thanked you for your service and you were discharged together at Beau (where you had to file paperwork to collect your discharge papers and back pay with the Civil Service Bureaucracy Government.
Just an idea for consideration.

Works for me assuming I was the young pilot . . .

Also Thumper and I are connecting.
He brought me on a camping/hiking/hunting vacation, and we got in a bit of trouble.
He has agreed, but I
wanted to bring it in to character generation.
OK?

Re: Character Generation
Yup. I am easy going about such things.
Since we stuck you in the NAVY for the LAST TERM ... you can even take the free skill from the Navy list (instead of the Prospector list) if you wanted. We have allowed that for unusual circumstances before. [Joe was not born on a planet, he was born and raised in SPACE ... so Joe has VaccSuit-1 instead of any Vehicle-1 skill].
Anything interesting that does not break the 2d6 curve is generally allowed.

Re: Character Generation
Just a quick question for my clarification: You rolled a [2] for survival and it was modified with a +8 to a [10] in that term ... [snake eyes to high success] now THAT suggests an interesting story!
[Perhaps "Lucky" should be his nickname!]

Re: Character Generation
After looking at the skills, is rifle - 1 acceptable?
Re: Character Generation
As a skill, yes.
Remember that you only get 1 bonus skill for knowing people (no matter how many you know).
