004: The Mean Streets of Aki

”Well Captain Evans, I’m a former cop and Marine before that. So I’ll try to be succinct. Your officers didn’t really follow the long story. Or maybe it was the way it was broken up.
We are licensed Bounty Hunters. Here are our licenses and the issued Bounty for two men (Jack-o Campbell and Maston Wiastona) wanted for Murder…Arker can provide the few specs we have on them. We apprehended one of their underworld associates on Glisten last week, and turned him over to the authorities…all a matter of record. Law enforcement, we hear, has been shaken up a bit by the revelations from that arrest and the data it provided. We’ve been traveling here, so do not know the full extent of the ensuing investigation.
What we know of these criminals:
1) They both arrived and departed on the Overland Express and transited the high and low ports each direction.
2) They brought with them to Aki some kind of ore or mineral nodules. For what purpose we don’t know they have a reputation as thugs and smugglers.
3) From piecing together other scattered bits of information, we speculate that that shipment may have been a cover for smuggling. That would be consistent with known criminal MO. We speculated that they were coming to Aki to smuggle both directions.
4) We further speculated that some or all of the smuggling in could be meat since it is a highly priced commodity here.
5) We caught their tracks as they were leaving two days ago. They brought two crates up through this station…looking nervous. We speculate they were smuggling something else out. Don’t know what.
6) We want to backtrack their steps from here and try to find what they are smuggling off Aki, so we can track them to their next layover or beyond. Actually getting ahead of them.
I am quickly learning that meat trade here is viewed even more harshly than I had heard about. Our accusations of meat smuggling are premature, a result of speculative inference. We were obviously very wrong to state that in public. We put that out there irresponsibly. How can we mitigate this grievous error? What can we do? Now that we’ve stepped really in it? “

I think I see where the confusion is coming from. Item two is incorrect. As I said earlier when it was brought up there was that there was nothing like that. The bad guys were stealing a PATENT about mining and exotic element extraction. I have no idea how that morphed into them taking something physical.Thumper wrote: ↑Mon Aug 26, 2024 3:32 am Walt keeps a Neural Link open to Roscoe for external recording purposes. Take a moment to rephrase all this with that taken into account and I’ll go from there. I’ll allow some leeway in earlier issues with security because of the misunderstanding.

William will go with Garvin and Jaelah to the rental vehicle counters. He will ask the helpful gentlemen at the counter. "Do you track where the vehicles have been? Is there a planetwide traffic monitoring network? If not can we take a look at the vehicle and take samples of the plant life and debris to try to narrow down where they went."

Well damn. That was part of my rationale/reasoning all along. I thought the patent theft gave Jack-0 et al a physical product they shipped off Glisten when they left. I swore I read that somewhere but no wonder I can’t find it now. Let me see what I can do. I’ll report back when a suitable amendment is made.terrymixon wrote: ↑Mon Aug 26, 2024 3:52 amI think I see where the confusion is coming from. Item two is incorrect. Sounds fine. And you might just get out of this without starting a riot.

Maybe we want to unleash a disintegrator bomb on the unruly mob… That is what the new voices in my head say to do to the disobedient ones. They must be purged with antimatter! All must bow before me.terrymixon wrote: ↑Mon Aug 26, 2024 4:19 amSounds fine. And you might just get out of this without starting a riot.![]()

William will nod and place another 100 credit chip so that it shows between his fingers. "We are licensed Imperial bounty hunters seeking registered criminals. These two are suspects but have already left planet so there is no danger from them. We do not believe any local laws were violated but if we find out we will of course contact the appropriate authorities here. We apologize for the inconvenience to your business but are willing to pay handsomely for a few favors and information. After that we will leave and never be back." He opened his wallet and showed the man his identity card and license.terrymixon wrote: ↑Mon Aug 26, 2024 3:58 am“Only in the city, but it has a navigation system. Jaelah sits back and takes a breath. "Captain Evans, I'm truly sorry that we stepped out of line. It's not our intent to cause trouble. All we want to do is to collect our bounty on two men who killed our friend. We are from out-system, so we didn't realize how poorly our questions and statements would be received."

The four three of you troop back to a repair shop on the premises and the grab van he shows you does look a little dinged up. Like it had went through some trees at speed.
A quick check shows that the data was erased, but as we all know, that doesn’t mean it’s gone. Garvin might be the best bet with his electronics (intrusion) to get the data you’re after.
As it was simply erased, let’s have a 8+ INT electronics (intrusion) check, oh master of breaking and entering.

I thought you were with Garvin. Reality rearranges itself and you are now here.joertexas wrote: ↑Mon Aug 26, 2024 4:38 amJaelah sits back and takes a breath. She’ll turn her attention to you. “I’ve got my people out telling everyone that it’s an unsustained rumor, so maybe nothing will come of it, but ignorance won’t cut it. You specifically used a an act that would outrage people. That means you knew it was a hot button topic. Whichever one of you came up with the idea was negligent and if this blows up, you will be held to account. Let me see those pictures.”
She’ll examine them and then call for someone to come take them away. “We’ll run them through our camera systems and see what they were doing. It’ll take a few hours. My folks tell me you came down on a ship. That ship is now grounded until this mess is sorted. You’re free to go but if you cause any more trouble, I’ll lock your assess under the jail. Give my people your comm code and go before I change my mind.”
They’ll take your code and boot you.

William hand the gentleman the coin. "Thank you very much." He will investigate the inside and outside of the vehicle including under and behind seats and any compartments. He will take samples of vegetation and dirt or other debris that might narrow down the location.terrymixon wrote: ↑Mon Aug 26, 2024 4:41 am“Sure,” the man said. “If you want to take a look at the van, we have it in the shop out back. I highly revised the bad actual information out of the spin Walt was putting on the situation with Capt Evans. /
Walt-
”Of course Capt Evans. I feel horrible about putting people in such a bad position. You know best, but I’d be happy to make a public statement or whatever might mitigate the consequences of the situation. I personally am horrified that I may have brought harm on everyday people.”
Walt exchanges contact info with the officers and makes his walk of shame out of the police station.

Re: 004: The Mean Streets of Aki
Walt-
”Got that right.”
Walt stops off at the pub near the police station to see if there are off-duty officers. If this looks like the place the squad would hang out in, he’ll approach the bar and drop $5000 cr tab for all cops. While intending to be seen by a handful of officers, but not trying to grandstand, he’ll humbly say Law enforcement is seldom appreciated, and I just made their lives harder today. Please open this for all law enforcers. (He’s trying to make sure the word gets out to the force and the owner doesn’t palm it, but he will avoid any further discussion with the officers other than, Thank you guys!
