Rules and Character Generation

#1 Post by mattchkn »

We are using the Old School Essentials: Advanced rules, with the same optional/homebrew rules that are used in our in person game (to be documented here as time permits.)

Rules specific to these PbP games
To minimize back and forth with rolls and comparisons, the GM will roll initiative each round as necessary (d6, 1-3: PCs go first, 4-6: PCs go last). In addition, the GM will secretly roll for Move Silently, Hide, Listen, Find Secret Doors, and Find Room Traps when players designate those actions.

Posting In Character (IC)
All official actions/dialogue for the game world should be posted in the Current Quest thread, with the name of the character acting placed at the beginning of the post. Players should use a third person tense when discussing their character's action to avoid confusion, should clearly state any actions be taken as part of the current turn/round, and may use as much or little embellishing language as they like. All spoken dialogue should be marked in blue text, to distinguish it from narration.
Each player should only speak for the actions/dialogue of their own character, except in instances where another player cannot post at the moment and have designated their actions out of game. When posting for another player/character, please make a separate post and place that character's name at the beginning of it as usual.

~~
Lancelot
The knight moves forward, examining the man on the ground.
"Good sir, are you well? What has happened here?"
He will keep his shield ready in case of trouble, but is not brandishing a weapon.
~~

When designating an action with a known roll associated with it (a d20 for a melee attack, a d6 for an attempt at Breaking Doors, etc) the player should post the results, on their own line and colored red, in the following format: [Action] [die rolled] : [die result] [modifiers listed separately (annotated if they like)] : [final total] . If the action is one which the player knows the odds/target number for (testing an Attribute by trying to roll under their character's score, rolling an exploration skill they have known chances at, etc) they should post that info as well. Players are welcome to roll physical dice and post the results using the Honor System, or utilize Unseen Servant's online dice system.

~~
Sword Attack d20: 12 +1 (STR) +2 (TH) : 15.
or
Sword Attack d20: 12 +1 +2: 15.
~~
Break Door d6: 1. (2-in-6)

Posting Out of Character (OOC)
The Discussion thread is there to ask questions of the GM, discuss options/strategies with other players, and other posts related to the game at hand. Nothing posted in this thread is considered to be action on the characters' parts, all official actions must be posted in the Current Quest thread before they are considered Locked In.

Character Generation
New characters will be generated follow the default Basic Method rules as written in the OSE books with the following exceptions:
-Players roll three sets of attribute sets (3d6 down the line each). Any set of stats with a single roll of 3 or four or more rolls of 8 or less may be considered Sub-Par and the entire set may be thrown out and rerolled if the player chooses.
-Their first two character must each use one of these three sets of stats. For their third character, they may either use the remaining set of stats or roll a new range of three, starting over.
-When applying the rolled stats to a character, the player may swap any two results from a single set of stats. After doing this, the may adjust values following the written rules.
-Minimum starting HP is 3, regardless of hit die rolls and CON modifiers.
-Starting equipment will be rolled used the Carcass Crawler random equipment rules
-All characters made with these rules will also receive one of the random Secondary Skills in the optional rules. The player may roll for two different skills and pick one.

When creating a new character, start a new thread in the game forum titled "[Character Name] : [Player Name] : [Status (Active, Retired, Deceased, etc)]"

Lancelot : Matt : Active

The first post in that thread should be a copy paste of the below character sheet, filled in with applicable information where all of # symbols appear. As game proceeds, this original sheet should be edited (instead of reposted) and no one other than the controlling player should make edits to it. As a point of etiquette, only the GM and controlling player should view these sheets, unless encouraged otherwise by the controlling player. As play progresses, the player is welcome to add additional posts highlighting key moments from the character's life, and should certainly make a post detailing any untimely demises. The top/first post should always be the up to date character sheet.
