OOC
Re: OOC
I think there was one vote for retreating.
I'm trying to balance giving you pure metadata vs giving you a better idea of what your PCs would perceive. Also, I always assume you can see what the monster entries look like in the rulebook. So here is some info on how to perceive your chances of winning this battle.
Suffice to say the Rug is the "big boss" with 3 HD. Low AC but potentially a sizable number of HP. I rolled neither well nor poorly for its HP.
The Swords are high AC but only one HD. I will tell you that I didn't roll particularly well on their HP, but you need to hit them first.
The Armor is in between the two but you can tell that it's "wounded" and close to death.
It's practically impossible to beat the imp in combat, as it's immune to non-magical weapons. But the cat is a result of a roll on the Dungeon Event table and I decided to use it to 'balance the scales', so to speak. The one thing I like the least about Argosa so far is the unbalanced nature of encounters. I get it from a wilderness encounter perspective but less so in a dungeon environment. I think, going forward, I will use a tighter band of possible encounters from a HD perspective.
I'd remind you, especially in 'final' encounters like this, to use all of the skills and powers at your command. Minor and Major Exploits. Rescues. We are using abstract positioning but if we get to the point where there's only one foe remaining, use Flanking.
All that being said, no shame in retreating. It's a tough fight. Just check the rules for Party Retreat to make sure you have a plan.

Re: OOC
If you're trying to move out of the room and use the doorway as a chokepoint, you're essentially "attempting to move out of melee with an active opponent". If we assume you are not retreating from the Armor, which can still attack from the doorway, you will be giving the Rug and both Swords a free melee attack.
There is no "Fighting Retreat", "5 foot step" or "Disengage action" in the ToA rules to get out of melee without provoking an Free Attack.
The only way you can retreat without inviting free attacks is the Party Retreat.

Re: OOC
I though my description of how we would get out there was the Party Retreat. I wasn't sure they would be pursuing beyond the door, but hopefully not, but forming up a defensive line seem a thing do so, otherwise they could pursue us and pick us off one but one. To be honest I found the section on Party Retreat so high level as to be not very helpful at all.
Re: OOC
Party Retreat is a pretty basic flowchart.
PCs say "we retreat"
GM decides if it's possible (e.g. you can't retreat if you're surrounded)
PCs say "we retreat"
GM decides if it's possible (e.g. you can't retreat if you're surrounded)
If not possible, you can withdraw and eat a free melee attack
If possible, group Luck rolls
Each PC rolls Luck
If possible, group Luck rolls
If not all successful, either retreat piecemeal or stick around
If all successful, you get out of melee with no free attacks
GM decides if enemies pursue
If all successful, you get out of melee with no free attacks
If no, you're free!
If yes, move to Chase rules
If yes, move to Chase rules
Re: OOC
So, I need you all to decide:
Sirius, Shysie, Brak - are you retreating or staying in melee combat with Baldwin?
Baldwin - are you withdrawing and eating two free melee attacks or are you standing and fighting another round?
I am going to randomly roll for enemy targets again (unless it's just Baldwin).
Remind me which of Baldwin's styles is his default, please?

Oof. Um, I think Brak, seeing his companion unable to withdraw, will re-enter the room and fight side by side, trying to avoid the rug.sulldawga wrote: ↑Fri Sep 06, 2024 1:40 pm So, I need you all to decide:

Re: OOC
You're in better shape now, with the Armor gone. If you decide to stay and fight, the Rug should be your target, as its 10 AC is the easiest to hit and you should be able to take it out next round before it can attack again.
Then it's a crap shoot if you can take out the 16 AC swords before they do the same to you. One good hit on each should do it.
If Shysie wants to get out of melee range, she can forego her open hand attack and use her Staff from the second rank.
There was a question about Dodging or Total Defense. These are the rules for Dodging. Using your Action on Dodging means you can't use it to attack, obviously.
A character may use their action to dodge or otherwise focus on defence. Until the start of their next turn, a dodging character has advantage on Dex checks and Luck (Dex) saves to resist adverse effects, and enemies suffer disadvantage on attack rolls against them.

Re: OOC
A couple of things to consider:
I would recommend taking a Short Rest before doing anything else.
Don't forget that you don't actually have the book in your possession yet.
It will take an entire day to reach the Wheelhouse Rangers fort. You probably won't reach it if you leave right now. You may recall that you got a Great Success on your Day 2 Guide check when traveling here, which gave you a bonus Watch.

What happens to me, all the time, is that I see an email come in but I forget to click on it, and then I don't see another email update. Possible that happened to you.
I also have had difficulty with Gmail on this site, to the point that I had to switch to my Yahoo account to get any email updates.
Not sure if either situation applies to you but I am very sympathetic to people missing posts.
Re: OOC
Gmail. It has happened in the past so it doesn't surprise me. I just need to be a little more timely checking to see if there are any new posts when I don't receive emails.sulldawga wrote: ↑Tue Sep 17, 2024 4:08 pm What happens to me, all the time, is that I see an email come in but I forget to click on it, and then I don't see another email update.
