The title of the "Strange Pursuit" thread is from a Louis L'Amour novel. I just liked the sound of the title, it may or may not end up being appropriate for the thread.

An interesting article in today’s Washington Post on old west guns and an unknown lawman:

Reminder that a character shoots at -4 accuracy per Serious wound, -1 per Light wound. If they add up, the effects can be pretty dramatic in a fight, for either side.

Well great! We’re in a face off! Anybody have any good ideas on how to flush the bandits out? Wait ‘em out or be en ‘em out? Rush the house?

Whatever we decide, we’ll have to come up with a logical comm plan in character.

We’ll see what Gidean finds on the East side of the house.

Maybe we could use the bandit’s horses to shield a couple of our guy’s approach to the porch. Ride or lead the horses up on the porch as both cover and confusion so we can get a look inside? Do our own “In without knocking”?

Dynamite!!! I knew I should have bought it..

Smoky Fire?

Low crawl to house.

Wait for dark, after taking the horses away.

What about weather? Any chance of something different?

There's a bank off clouds to the north. It looks like it might rain tomorrow.

I haven't waited for Andreas' post the past two turns, only because the NPCs didn't do anything of note that he could have observed and acted on. And, knowing what I've seen of Andreas's nature so far, I think he would quietly, patiently and discretely observe and wait for something actionable to happen. cybersavat, if you'd like to retcon those two turns, we can easily do that.

In the Strange Pursuit thread:
My calculus on the situation. Assuming the entire Shepherd gang are in the house that makes 5 of them plus possibly the survivor from the Duncan gang for a total 6.

The Duncan gang survivor is wounded.
One Shepherd gang is dead
One is wounded with 3 serious wounds, and perhaps one light.
That leaves four Shepherds/Duncan. One is likely wounded already.

Of course, some may have been away from the station at the moment.

If we rush the house, we have the same advantage and disadvantage as they did behind the house walls. Can still get shot, damage is reduced...not stopped as in the case of hard cover.

If I was the Shepherds, I'd be barricaded inside the interior of the house with more cover than just the plank house walls. Hard cover. Gonna need to be able to move shots to the shoulders, chest or head to get them.

There may be an element of distrust built between the Shepherd and Duncan gang survivors...no way to verify that.

If any bandits are away from the station, the ploy now could be a delaying action until reinforcements arrive.

I think the only successful way to assault the place is to use as much cover as possible (horses, saddles held in front of us like shields, stealth through the grass, etc.). Getting the horses us next to the house can provide the needed cover to get a human up to the house, and the horse provides a distraction to those inside as well.

DT is going to start crawling through the grass to the house. Once a big distraction on the South side occurs, he may go for the sprint to the house NW corner.

Remember, we discussed the potential for one or more to slither out the East side and under the house or into the cellar (depending on what the door was like).

What am I missing? What other considerations are needed for a smart assault on the house?

I believe we also had a runner, or at least a guy seen in the distance, so I think these guys are waiting for the cavalry to show up.
I think William's position is still unknown, as the only guy who saw him got fatally shot. But he may have said something in the split second between seeing and getting shot.

I think the two best courses are
1. To rush the house as you outline
or, if we're a bit evil ( I don't think William would come up with this in his development arc where it is)
2. Move the horses a bit away, pile up brush and set the house on fire on two sides, and pick them off as they run out.

We could also take all their horses and move off to safe plinking distances and have a siege, hoping that they get desperate. I think that's got lots of problems, though.

While we're only a few game minutes into this, I don't think time will be on our side once dusk hits (or that other spotted guy gets reinforcements). At the very least, we need to have their horses before then.

To clarify, the rider William saw in the distance turned out to be Gideon. No one has seen any sign of reinforcements.

Good to note, I totally misread that! In that case, I'm not nearly as anxious about reinforcements, though they are always a concern.
