I was asked if fleeing is an option. Yes it is...just let me know where your PC is running if you choose this option. If a player is being targeted by a mud creature, please roll a d20+4 with stamina modifier. If your PC's score beats the mud creature's fleeing will be successful over the next three rounds.

Booth, having never seen a pile of dirt he couldn't move, hold his shovel high as he dashes towards one of the mud-men, swing the shovel like a scythe.
Attack: [1d20-1]=10-1=9 Damage: [1d4-1]=4-1=3

Abney hesitantly approaches the mud-men, his newly acquired short sword swinging in front of him hoping to catch one of the mud-men by pure chance.
Attack: [1d20]=20 Damage[1d6]=5

Dilton charges forward with his short sword, hell bent on taking out the latest monstrosity to come across his trail.
Attack: [1d20+1]=7+1=8 Damage [1d6+1]=5+1=6

Perheal stays towards the back of the group, hoping to avoid getting any mud on his clothes. He will defend himself with his spear if any of the mud-men get too close.

Smelly Seth the beggar lets a stone fly from his sling at a mudman and then when another rises up near him to attack, he races away from it....praying to any Gods who may be out there to save him.....

Attack: [1d20+2]=14+2=16

Damage Roll: [1d4]=3

Flee Roll (note, he has the Birth Augur: Wild Child (Speed, each +1 = +5' speed) and his AGI is 16; [1d20+4]=18+4=22

Frank Fruitcastle, yelling wildly and incoherently, attacks a Mudman who was near the fleeing Seth with his newly acquired Kobold Spear, missing badly....

[1d20+1]=5+1=6

Tanya Snaresetter, standing near Seth, attacks the same Mudman as Frank, also with her newly acquired Kobold Spear....

[1d20-1]=13-1=12

If by some miracle that hits, damage roll: [1d6-1]=4-1=3

I went ahead and NPC'ed Keehnelf's and Samwell's characters. Given how many combatants are involved, I'm only going to narrate the hits from the PCs.

<<before this round>>

Seth loads a stone into his sling and lets fly at the mud creature approaching him. It whistles through the air and hits the creature square in its quickly drying chest. The impact blows the creature into motionless chunks on the grassy earth. Smelly Seth then runs back towards the town entrance, yelling out prayers to whomever may hear them.

The first round of mud creatures, now numbering four, are upon the party!

Gerd acts quickly, drawing his handaxe and cleaving the creature attacking Groogones in twain (hits for 4 hp). It loses shape, crumbling into a muddy pile.

One of the mud forms attacks Lars. Its face looks human, but it is utter devoid of emotion as it swings a thick fist at the woodcutter. 1d20 = 5 But Lars reacts quickly and dodges.

Groogonés intercepts the mudman attacking Shopco, clubbing it on the top of its mud head and reducing it to chunks of lifeless dirt -3 hp.

Zelda swings her blacksmith's hammer at the mudman heading towards Elsie, striking a weak glancing blow -1 hp that leaves an indent on the mud body.

Abney plunges his newly acquired short sword into the chest of the mudman that had attacked Lars. The mud creature shatters.

Elsie finishes off the final mud creature in the first wave of attackers -4 hp...but eleven will enter the fray next round!

Smelly Seth, relieved his sling had done the job, looks back to see most of his fellow survivors still in battle with even MORE mud-men. From a distance of some 25-30 yards from the others, he loads his weapon as calls over to Talya "C'mon lass, let's try and help 'em out!" and then yells to everyone; "RUN YOU DANG FOOLS!" as he whips another stone at the 'dirty' creatures.....

Attack roll: 1d20+2: [1d20+2]=11+2=13
If that hits, Damage roll: 1d4: [1d4]=4

Talya Snaresetter leans her spear against the wall of a house and likewise loads up her sling as the beggar had done and asked of her. She tersely answered with, "Okay, but don't expect to stick around for these fools with a hankerin' to get to the afterlife", even as she whipped a stone into the battle at a different mud creature.....

Attack roll: 1d20: [1d20]=19
Damage roll: 1d4 (she's STR 8, but I don't THINK that -1 would apply to a sling stone damage?): [1d4]=2

Frank Fruitcastle stands by the other two, nervously holding his spear, unsure of what to do. He whips his head and entire body eventually in a 360 degree arc to see if anything is coming towards them from any direction.....

Booth, undeterred, continues to swing his shovel.
Attack: [1d20-1]=1-1=0 Damage: [1d4-1]=1-1=0

Abney embolden by his first attack, finds another mudman to swing his sword at.
Attack: [1d20]=2 Damage: [1d6]=1

Dilton continues his reckless onslaught on the mudmen.
Attack: [1d20+1]=10+1=11 Damage [1d6+1]=3+1=4

Perheal carefully approaches the mudmen using Dilton as a shield. He will jab at the same mudman attacked by Dilton.
Attack: [1d20+1]=14+1=15 Damage: [1d6+1]=3+1=4

The battle continues as nearly a dozen mud creatures attack!

Attack targets chosen randomly.

A human-faced mudman dashes towards Torben, catching him off-guard as he draws his club. The mud creature's rock hard fist hits the baker with a sickening thud, caving in his skull and ending his short life of adventure. It then turns towards Ingrid for its next attack next round

Human mudman attacks Torben [1d20]=14 damage [1d4]=4

Dang, sorry GreyWolf!

Smelly Seth loads his sling as he yells RUN YOU DANG FOOLS! Immediately after, two more mud figures rise from the ground. They have human faces and...mud jester hats? It is at this point most of our adventurers realize that speaking the name of animate things summons their hostile form in mud!

Seth's sling whistles as it lets fly a stone. It hits a faceless onrushing mudman square in the chest and it explodes in a brown mist.

A human-faced mudman rushes at Lars, but the woodcutter is ready with his axe and hacks it down, killing it before it strike!

A dog-faced mudman squares off against Wil. Wil swings a savage, but errant shortsword and his agility saves him as he evaded the strike of his foe! Birdsong steps in, striking the creature with his staff -1 hp but it fights on.

Two mudmen rush at Dilton, one human-faced, the other blank-faced. Perhael emerges from behind the hunter and cuts the human-faced one in twain with his newly obtained short sword! Dilton plunges his weapon into the faceless one and it disintegrates into a chunky dirt pile.

The mud-chicken runs towards Seth and Frank. It passes closely by Ingrid, who slashes at it with her sword, but her strike comes too late.

Shopco the halfling kills a human-faced mudman. Orlop, out of arrows and without another weapon, runs towards Seth, Talya, and Frank.

Samuel slashes at a dog-mud-man as it approaches him, but the muddy creature ducks it. It puts it off balance enough that its swinging fist misses the mercenary.

Abney, Gerd, and Elsie fail to land their strikes.

A faceless mudman runs at Booth. The ditch digger makes first contact with his shovel, albeit weakly, -1 hp and the mud creature responds with a weak strike, hitting Booth hard in the ribs!

Faceless mudman attacks Booth [1d20]=12 dmg [1d4]=1

Talya whips a stone at the mud chicken as it continues to advance on Frank. It connects -2 hp, spinning the mud chicken 360 degrees but the sturdy mud creature continues on its path. It finally felled by an arrow from Monty's bow. A faceless mudman then attacks Monty, but misses.

Sonja stabs a dog-mud-man for 1 hp of damage.

Torben lies dead with a total of 8 mud creatures defeated. Five remain in combat. One engaging Monty, one engaging Booth, one engaging Samuel, and another engaging Dilton and Perhael. Torben's slayer will go for Ingrid next.

Two jester-mudmen animate and will join the fray at the end of next round.

That narrates all the hits at least.

Missile fire into melee is done at a -1 penalty. If target is missed, 50% chance of hitting an ally...if the 50% means an ally is targeted, attack roll beating ally's AC means you've hit an ally.

Wil with no idea where to run to decides it is time to cut and run to try and live to fight another day. unsure what options we have for directions to run without going back to the prior enemies,

Lars watching folks drop left and right and foes continuing to rise decides to follow Wil's lead and flee.

Aside from running into houses, there are essentially three ways out. The road they came in on, and two others that are lined with houses then go out into farmsteads. See the post upon entering this village here.

Lars can flee with no penalty. Those engaged in melee will be subject to a free attack by the enemy if they attempt to flee. Since Wil lags his foe in initiative, the foe will get one attack then another free one. You can give a conditional action for Wil (e.g. he flees if Birdsong kills their enemy, but attacks if not). Might really be pushing your luck to dodge two attacks next round.

Initiative orders for the four groups engaged in combat:

1. Faceless mudman acts before Monty
2. Booth acts before faceless mudman
3. Samuel acts before dog-mudman
4. Birdsong acts before dog-mudman who acts before Wil

Smelly Seth decides that using one of the houses for defense is the way to go, so he'll attempt to open the closest door and if that fails, then he'll move to a window and if necessary, break the glass to enter while yelling out, "Let's get inside!"

Talya Snaresetter will see what he's doing and move to help, doing a head-motion in the direction of the house while catching Frank's eye and saying simply, "C'mon!"

Frank Fruitcastle catches Talya's eye, and follows her head motion to the house/building that Seth is breaking into and follows along, helping if needed to gain access......
