Left behind, Urkazzar sits down, cross legged, and begins to pray in a low, droning tone, the sound of sand blowing across the dunes.

As the chains smash into the Jackal, they fall into the sand, sinking, passing through it. Finally, the magic takes hold, catching something deep inside that holds tight.

The creature doesn't turn toward Suen-Magir. It waves upon itself until it faces toward him, ignoring Lilly as she rushes in. With an ascending shriek of anger, it rushes over toward the party, leaving Nutesh, Farouk and Bassam behind.

Lilly, you have Help from Mekertu for any action you want to take in the moment. In a moment, Finnithir will begin a new song, which might help in this situation!
Lilly charges at the creature, attempting to sink her sword deep into its flank before it can close on Suen.
@Eric: Let me know if the sword even engages... and if so is this a Stardard test? a Bloody Versus?

My thought on this is that it isn't likely to pay attention to you unless you do some serious damage. So Standard test, I think. Your weapon skill vs. its speed as it's moving by. Beat it and it will pay attention to you instead. Lose, and it continues on its course.

Jackal Speed: [_5d6s4]=(4, 6, 6, 5, 2)=4=4

B5 Sword:

+ Dwarven Sword Balance Die and Brawling FoRK (forgot about those)

I'll spend a Fate IF the number of extra successes matter:
Lilly charges the jackal, jumping with her full force into the creature's flank, driving her sword-arm into the sand and shadows that compose it!

You hit!

Lilly smashes through the monster as it dashes at Suen-Magir, blowing through its flank with her sword, smashing sand onto the ground below, leaving writhing shadows tearing out at the night. A caterwaul erupts from the monster, and it spins away to face off against Lilly, discordant mews shattering the night. The shadows stitch themselves back together, a gash of midnight slowly refilling with sand that falls from its back, shrinking just a few inches as it does.

Urkazzar Faith Test [_5d6s4]=(6, 1, 3, 5, 2)=2=2
Urkazzar continues to pray, rocking back and forth on the sand. A small glow burns in his palms, barely noticeable, and certainly not of import in this moment, but though she is too far to see, Lilly feels a sudden surge of energy, adrenaline dripping through her veins. Lilly now has open-ended Sword tests for the duration of the scene.

Finnithir, his eyes watching the creature with hatred, begins to hum in a dark tongue that belies his beauty, his words vicious and cruel. "Pathetic," he sneers at the creature, his voice crescendoing with grating spite, "You can't even walk without taking a blow. A monster? Nay, a pathetic ripple of dust."

Finnithir Twisted Tongue [_4d6s4]=(1, 4, 6, 4)=3=3

This will cause a Steel test for all in Finnithir's presence (each of you, except Nutesh, of course). Lilly, this triggers your Instinct about carrying useful stuff.

Jackal Steel Test [_6d6s4]=(3, 5, 5, 3, 2, 6)=3=3

The Jackal melts to look at Finnithir, setting it's feet and staring at him, uncertain.

The Jackal is hesitating for 4 rounds.

Mekertu Steel Test [_6d6s4]=(4, 5, 1, 1, 1, 2)=2=2

Mekertu is hesitating for 5 rounds.

Urkazzar Steel Test [_4d6s4]=(1, 6, 5, 3)=2=2

Urkazzar is hesitating for 6 rounds.

The sand around Nutesh continues to run like water, and it laps ever closer to the party, now standing uncertain. It is mere seconds away, if even that far.

"Twisted Tongue" Ob6 Steel test; B3 + 1D for being among allies [_4d6s4]=(4, 6, 1, 2)=2=2 and the exploder: "Twisted Tongue" Steel test, Open ended; [_1d6s4]=(4)=1=1
3 Actions of standing and drooling for the Intense Sorrow.
The Skill song-, Faith- and the Steel tests of the NPCs should have been open ended as well, but I'm okay with neglecting that for the sake of simplicity. Especially since the tables have turned surprisingly fast. ^^

Amazed by the magical display that Suen conjures, Lilly's courage to attack, Finnithir's beautiful yet menacing chanting and the fact that all that actually drives off the shaytan, Farouk forgets the vortex of sand around him. The muscles in his arms relax and the fabric of Nuteshs coat slip through his hands, causing Nutesh to sink a bit further into the desert. As soon as the overwhelming echoes of Finnithir's alien words in his skull subside and Farouk regains control over his body, he shakes his head and becomes aware of the situation they are still in, and he instantly resumes his efforts to keep them both above the surface.
  • Is it fair to say that Farouk figured out, that Nutesh is the source of the flowing sand, and that it's no good to try to get him out?
  • How is Bassam doing, now that the demons attention veered off? He is not affected by the song since he doesn't understand high speech. :)

In case it matters: My IMS is B4/B8/B12 so:
1) If we're treating it as a regular Skill vs Stat I get a B8 Mark
2) If we're treating it as a Fight! Avoid (no double obstacle penalty), it is a B4 Incidental

Lilly grunts and staggers sideways as the spin of the creature's massive stature forces her to regain her footing... squaring off to fight it.

(I'm assuming you're letting me skill the Steel Test if I succeed)
The opening chords of Finnithir's disquieting melody bring a smile to her face, memories of past fights in the criminal-filled streets of Terracielo, her roll as a harbinger of destruction for her beloved Siren. Her finger passes through the inner rim of her helmet, finding small recess filled with wax to plug her earning.
B5 Scavenging + Stuff-Wise FoRK:

(@Eric, I'm assuming Ob is between '2: common household items' and '3: hard to find items')

As the Demon Hesitates, Lilly advances on the creature, bloodlust in her eyes...
B5 Sword + Balance Die + Brawling FoRK (Ob 1?):

Edit: Open-ended by Urkazzar's Boon...

That'd be 4 successes for a B8 Mark.

Edit: Alternative scenario if I'm required the Steel Test after all:
B5 Steel + 1D from 'group of friends/allies':

Open-ended:

9 Successes vs Hesitation 6!

Since Lilly doesn't Hesitate anyway the remaining description of the attack remains the same just removing the wax thing.

As the creature stares, uncertain, at Finnithir, Lilly's sword lands true, cutting through its neck, and its head falls away in a shower of dust and sand. It recoils in a tornado of violent, whispered shouts, reforming itself a few feet away, smaller, less threatening. It howls, a thousand voices crying at once, and sinks into the sand. A curtain of dust kicks up, and the creature, formless now, retreats away at inhuman speed over a dune.

"The gods above be praised," Mekertu exclaims in the silence that follows. Then, to Lilly, "It will return. They do not die."

A distance away, near the rest of the group, Urkazzar murmurs, so low that only those nearest can hear, "It will not. It has gone to the Great Mother."

Finnithir hears this, and looks sharply at Urkazzar, but says nothing.

Sabit and Suen-Magir, also nearby, hear it. But Sabit is alight with pleasure and pays him no mind.

"That was incredible, Suen! If it weren't for you, surely we'd all be dead!"

In the running sands, Bassam grunts in terror.

Farouk:

Your gear instantly falls into the sand as it continues to rush like water. Nutesh is a dead weight in your arms. Bassam snorts and splutters as he falls deeper, ever deeper into the sandwater. The curtain of sand flashes by, the demon retreating, but your focus is now here, with Bassam in this terrifying moment.

As his neck falls into the sand, his descent miraculously stops and he floats atop the running sand as though it truly were water. The sandwater brushes against your legs, cold and harsh. Bassam's plaintive grunts wane as he realizes that he is no longer sinking, and with a sudden certainty, he begins to swim away from the center of the water, but the water expands as he moves, following Nutesh, the source of this strangeness.

I struggle to get the situation... So the sand has stopped flowing like water but still behaves like it. A lake instead of a river (or a avalanche?)?! Bassam is neck deep in the sand and tries to "swim" to the edge of the area which is expanding.
The trait sais
The effects of Lawbreaker extend to
the limits of the Presence for black
shade Will and 10x Presence for gray
shade Will.

and the rules
Presence Origin
If the caster could speak to the recipient in a normal speaking voice
and be understood (regardless of other ambient noise), then the
recipient is in the Presence of the caster. The caster’s Presence does
not go through walls, but can pass through doors and windows.

and
Presence Area of Effect
Certain spells have an area of effect equal to the presence of the caster.
If a measure is needed, presence is equal to the Will of the caster in
paces. Otherwise, use the Area of Effect in Combat heading in Spells as
Weapons.

-> for Nutesh (Will B4) 4 paces
Nutesh and Farouk are in the center of the area, with the sand only reaching to their shins since they didn't move as much as Bassam did. Is that what you have in mind as well?

I forgot the fact you were not mounted. Sorry, it can be hard to hold the situation in my head! I should add that you have continued to sink, as well. :lorcl: But if Bassam is not with Nutesh, he will escape.

Bassam swims to the edge, quite rapidly, and pulls himself out, hurrying away rapidly until he is a fair distance away. You continue to sink, and at first it appears that Nutesh sinks with you, but as you sink further into the sandwater, he rests atop it, as if it were still solid, though the sand flows beneath him still. He appears to be unaffected by whatever his magic has wrought for the rest of the world.

The sandwater snatches at you, and you find yourself instinctively treating it like actual water, and find that you, like Bassam, can keep yourself above it with great effort.

Cool. Thanks for the clarification! :)
To be honest: I'm a bit sad that Nutesh just floats. I didn't want him to die of course and it makes sense for him, to not be affected, but this way Farouk achieved nothing for the group, except for loosing a bunch of their supplies :P (He contributed to the scene though. Yeah! :)). If you remember, during character creation I already hesitated to play a mundane character. Maybe this manifests in an inferiority-komplex-belief for Farouk. ^^
Realising that Nutesh won't drown in the sand Farouk starts swimming behind Bassam. As he crosses the spot, where he cut lose the loads, he keeps an eye out for the saddle and their belongings.
When acceptable I would like to make a Wise test (maybe Stuff-wise?) to have a length of rope (Farouk has traveling gear) strapped to the saddle that he can grab one end of, so they can later dig along the rope to find the stuff.

This is cool and dramatic, the in-character realization that maybe you are in the presence of people who are your betters, or at least more capable. Don't be upset that your character is developing an arc! I'm excited to see how this plays out, and what Farouk does about it. Being jealous couldn't possibly lead to something interesting occurring later, could it?

The Jackal being resolved, I think now is an appropriate time for that. This seems not that unlikely to me, so Ob 2?

Sounds good!
BL Stuff-wise Ob2; Perception B5 [_5d6s4]=(3, 2, 4, 5, 6)=3=3
Even though it's not that heroic, this roll is the most exciting for me, yet. ^^ Maybe because I'm only awake for 10 minutes or because the odds to succeed are well balanced.
Of course I will challenge the fate on that 6!

BL Stuff-wise Ob2; exploding with fate [_1d6s4]=(4)=1=1
Yeah!!! This feels good!!! :D
Aaaah shit... this is post-breakfast-me... I forgot the +1Ob on Perception tests for being exhausted... So no rope for Farouk
Edit:
BL Stuff-wise; Help from Lilly [_1d6s4]=(3)=0=0
Too bad... Still appreciate the effort, Lilly!
Passing the floating, colorful blanket, that used to protect Bassam from the cold of night, Farouks foot brushes something solid, deep beneath the surface and an idea springs to his mind. The Saddle! Farouk remembers a coiled up rope that Lilly fastened to the side of it. I can't possibly drag the saddle out myself BUT I can make sure we can find it later on! He gropes for the slowly descending rope and finally finds it. With a sigh of relief he reaches for the loop that holds the rope in place but suddenly feels a shift in the torrent surrounding him. The saddle beneath him slowly, but unstoppable turns away and threatens pull him under. With a resigned "Fuck..." pressed through his teeth he lets go and continues to swim.

You will stand, have stood, are standing, at the gates of the Black Citadel, where Algash once ruled over the dead. Time, space, these are things of the material world. Once, if such a thing were true—perhaps where—Algash forced them onto this place and the Citadel was firm as the world which you came from, but nevernow.

Ku-Aya is here, waiting, from somewhen that has not yet happened and has already passed. In this when she is full in her vitality, not a shade, but a presence, a power that animates the very fabric of now and here. Her warm gaze distracts from pain, somewhere in the back of your mind, and you fall into it as a child into his mother's arms. The Citadel, all times and forms of it, are awash in pastel, softness. Her eyes surround you, envelop you. Her voice hums, distant birdsong on distant wind. She speaks, and it is clarion.

"The Jackal is a spirit. It seeks you and the desert man, because you can hear it."

The Jackal rears up in the Citadel, black and pastel, and shattered apart, scatters, a thousand thousand tiny jackals, small as mice, spreading out like a putrid wave across the whens and wheres.

"It is perhaps right to say it is many spirits. But there is only one mind, the rest are its slaves, and they act together."

The jackals wave past your feet, and with them came a thousand thousand tiny voices. They will climb up and over you, across whatever part of you is now or then or yet to come. Your ears fill with tiny sobs, cries of loneliness and desperation, and they swarmed through you and over you and in you and—Ku Aya is there. Only her. She is right in front of you. She is right now.

"It isn't an enemy. You must tell them. They will not believe. I cannot keep you. You must make them understand, or it will kill them." There will be strain in her voice.
Nutesh steps to her, taking her in his arms, perhaps truthfully for the first time. She is vital here, real. This is what they wanted...

"You cannot... keep me? I would stay forever, habibti... You must keep us together..."

"Why do you still speak of the jackal? We have this moment. Here. Us..."

His own hands become less substantial, unable to grasp her as she has always been able to grasp him.

"No! Do not let me return! Must I die again? Must I die again to return here? Don't... let it fade..."

He reaches for his own magic, desperation to remain here. With her. Nothing in the living world can hold him thus.

She pushes again about the Jackal. Does she not understand?

habibti = "my love (feminine)"

I assume he can't beginner's luck a Death Art roll or a Sorcery roll while he's dead from burning out his magic. But if he could, he would try!

...I probably also need a belief or trait about trying to die.

She smiles even as you plead, gentle, kind, a swirling evanescence. The Black Citadel is suddenly solid, black walls, black sky, black... just black. She is not there. There is nothing but blackness. The vision is gone, and so are your thoughts, as you slip unwittingly away, back to your own world.
I thought long and hard about it, tapped a few friends, and decided that a test isn't the right course. What spell would you cast? What test could you make to leave your own body behind and willingly die? No, much better to let you write a Belief about it. ;)

Suen:

As the creature retreats and your magic fades, Sabit embraces you, arms around your neck, melting into you, far too familiar for a sister. "That was incredible," she exclaims, "I knew you could do it."

Without warning, before you can even answer, she squeezes tightly, her fingernails digging into your neck, and her voice drops down to a husky, menacing, vicious whisper meant for your ears only, "Don't ever, ever let yourself slip up like that again."

She lets go, and draws back, smiling, beaming, a proud sister for all the world to see. She turns to the other members of the Church, black robed, ambling, watching the interaction as though nothing else matters. "See? Have I not said that Suen is the keystone of our Church? He answers my call, as you do, and we are protected. Do not forget that I have protected us tonight."

Marta, an old crone, one of the Church's first followers, prostrates herself before you, "Hail Suen, our savior. Hail Sabit, our matriarch, who speaks with the voices of the god!"

Sabit turns back to you and grins wryly, and in a low whisper as the rest of the cult follows Marta's lead, whispers, "See? Listen to me, and they will worship you. It is all going as intended."

Farouk:

Mekertu meets you at the edge of the sandwater, extending his hand to help you out, even as the ground laps and falls beneath his feet. "Do not be too upset, Farouk. The desert takes and we live. And now Akhom cannot complain that you overburden Bassam."

He looks behind you as you scrabble up, eyeing Nutesh's crumpled form that floats on the sand. "What do we do with the sorcerer? Is he injured? I did not see the beast get him."

Lilly:

As Mekertu makes his way toward Farouk, Finnithir runs toward you, his feet light, a concerned look on his face. "Are you well, my love?"

Urkazzar shambles behind him, head bobbing, eyes averted, a lost child, and he speaks to the dunes off to your right, "I've never seen anyone face a demon like that. Amazing."

Huffing and puffing Farouk thankfully reaches for Mekertus hand and crawls out of the sandwater. Streams of sand run out of the folds of his clothes and out of his hair. Tears of relief and exhaustion leave their paths on his dust covered cheeks. "Thank you, sadiq."
He takes a look around, searching for the demon and then for Bassam and the rest of the group. Farouk missed most of the action, that took place after the demon went for Suen. "Where is it gone? Is everyone okay?"
After Mekertu explained to him that Suen, Lilly and (to an extent) Urkazzar managed to chase the demon away, and assured him that Suen worked his magic only on the demon, Farouk calms down a bit. Manifesting the Belief about keeping everyone away from deamon-magic, and his paranoid-trait.
"They bested a shaytan of the desert!? These people really are remarkable! And look at me, what have I accomplished?" Farouk looks over to the dark, floating form of Nuteshs body: "What ever I did, was not much help to him, but I think he is alive. He caused the sands to move like water and collapsed when the shaytan closed in... but if the Whispers didn't tricked my ears, I believe I heard him breathing..."
The blank stare of Farouks pale blue eyes rest a little longer on Nutesh. "I'm not sure if I should envy or fear the powers they wield..." Narrator voice: "Deep down inside he knew, it wasn't fear he felt." :P
Now that "we" lost a hefty chunk of our water supplies, Farouk thinks about alternatives. Unless you (Eric) have something else in mind, I would like to roll a City of Telkomel-wise test, to establish that the Sipe River runs through the city. I bet it's corrupted like the rest of the city, but nevertheless it's a start. ^^ That should be common knowledge, right?

As Mekertu makes his way toward Farouk, Finnithir runs toward you, his feet light, a concerned look on his face. "Are you well, my love?"

Urkazzar shambles behind him, head bobbing, eyes averted, a lost child, and he speaks to the dunes off to your right, "I've never seen anyone face a demon like that. Amazing."
At first, Lilly does not hear him call out and turns menacingly when he is but a few steps away. For half an heartbeat, it looks like she's ready to keep fighting... Then she wavers and her expression softens. She glances around, finds no more threats, and lets the tip of her sword fall to the sand.

"I think we're safe, My Light." - she turns to stare at Nunesh flowting on the sand. - "Now how are we dealing with that?... WHAT? What did you say?"- She tilts her head embarrassed, pull off her helmet and starts trying to dig the wax out of her ears... - "Look away. LOOK AWAY!" - she yells jokingly at Finnithir - "There are some things boys should not see their girl do!"
