Re: WW2 Supers d6: SST 11: Mission Six: Anzio, The Worst has Come
Approximately 3:55 PM; 28 February, 1944; just south of Borgo Sabatino a.k.a. 'Gusville', Italy
The members of SST 11 come together on the battlefield, Heuron and Chisholm holding their wounds as everyone moves to a dead body of a German solider where a faint 'resonance' of a Talent Power can be felt/heard/smelled by all of them. The soldier was wearing glasses and all got the strange impression as they got near the lying on his side body that somehow they were being watched through the glasses, even though the glassy eyes of the corpse were clearly seeing nothing.....and then the Talent sense vanished completely.....
Shortly after that, Phil and Nahum's wounds were treated by Luther Goodfox and a Medic that came running up to them and they were directed off the front lines for the moment....
March 1st-night of March 4th, 1944; Borgo Sabatino a.k.a. 'Gusville', Italy
The next few days include some desultory artillery duels and a few night raids, but SST 11 is given the days off and allowed to rest and recover from the fight before and all feel much better in the pleasant town of 'Gusville' (all WP is recovered). On the night of March 4th they are summoned by a runner to the rear area HQ of General Frederick and there they meet up with the General, Colonel Adams, Major Burhans (the head Intel officer of the Force) and two familiar looking faces; the Talents they had met a few weeks ago; 1st LT Colin 'The Fireman' O'Riley and SGT Scott 'Dust Devil' Hill....
General Frederick greets them warmly, asking about each of them, clearly remembering previous conversations he's had with each of them and asking about family members by name; inquiring if they've heard from the home towns they hail from, etc. Adams is cordial, but doesn't say much while Burhans stays off with the other Two Talents. After some chit-chat, Frederick tells them that there's "Good News" and 'Bad News'...and decides to give the Former first.....
He gives Chisholm and Heuron another Purple Heart; jokingly telling them that they need to stop 'competing for the most of these!' with him as it's the fourth time Nahum and the third time Phil had won the award while the General was up to half a dozen of them. He also had a pair of silver bars brought forward and announces that Chisholm is being Field Promoted to 1st Lieutenant due to his excellent ability to lead the Talent Team in times of combat....
Then it's time for the 'Bad News' and he waves Burhans over. The Major tells them that through 'Special Intelligence channels', they've learned that Uberkommando Group 107; also known as 'Zerberus' has been brought to the area SPECIFICALLY to fight SST 11. This Uberkommando group specializes in eliminating Allied Talents; having successfully done so to a number of Russian Talent Teams on the Eastern Front and then most recently doing the same to a British STS Team operating behind the lines in occupied Greece just 2 months ago. It's also believed they were one of the units that fought on the 19th of February in the massive battle that led to so many Allied Talent casualties....including most of the fellow Team Members that O'Riley and Hill were fighting alongside that day. They had been briefed about who they had fought and were also brought here to 'reinforce as observers and advisors' the members of SST 11....
O'Riley seemed SLIGHTLY less bitter than he had at the Award ceremony a little while ago, but his near sneer and hard look in his eyes showed that he still wasn't a big fan of the members of SST 11. Hill's face was quite stoic, but he didn't display any signs of holding any grudges simply because the members of SST 11 had been on a mission elsewhere. Meanwhile, the two Talents relate that of all the Ubermen they had fought on the 19th, the most dangerous were a group of 5 that seemed to work extremely well together and never got 'too close' to the action....and this would seem to line up with the reports of how 'Zerberus' seemed to operate....
The 5 members seemed to have some ability to 'see' things from far away....utilizing reflective items in a way they didn't fully understand, but definitely giving them an advantage in understanding what Allied Forces and Talents were doing while they remained out of sight. Another Talent could Teleport objects only (i.e. they did not 'come along for the ride'); and frequently this took the form of Grenades or other explosives and the like; sometimes just appearing in the midst of a group. Another Talent had some kind of excellent camouflage or invisibility that was utilized along with one of the new fangled Fully Automatic FG-42 weapons to cause havoc up close and personal. A Hyper Talented Sniper was in the group and it was believed this Talent worked very closely with the 'Obserer' Talent to hit opponents from very far away.
The last Talent was known as 'The Steel Leader' and he was known to have the ability to turn his body to steel and to have some kind of 'Commanding Voice' that could cause those who heard it to follow his orders instantly, even if it was for only a few moments. Burhans soberly tells all the members of SST 11 that every member of the Uberkommando Group had been awarded the Knights Cross by SS Leader Himmler personally.......these were among the best of the best the Germans could field and they had collectively killed hundreds of Allied troops and perhaps a couple dozen Talents in their time.
Frederick cleared his throat and told them that he believed from all he had seen first hand from them, he felt SST 11 was not the equal of the German SS Talents, but in fact they were FAR BETTER. The powers that be in the SSO (Special Services Office) were concerned enough to lend the services of O'Riley (who had the ability to project flames from his hands and turn himself fire-proof as well) and Hill (who had the ability to see through nearly any conditions such as darkness or storms, etc. AND to create localized 'dust devils' or small tornadoes of dust/dirt that could obscure and harass people and knock them off their feet) to the Force to counter the threat that 'Zerberus' posed to them.
Frederick then told them that he wanted them to get to know each other and come up with ideas on how to go after these 'Super Jerry bastards' as he'd rather hit them first before they started taking out Forcemen.....

After his promotion is announced, "Thank you, it is my men who deserve the recognition. Without them I am nothing."
When discussing Zerberus, "I wonder if they can "see" through anything shiny? It would explain their ability to know what is going to happen or where their enemies are exactly."

"As you say, the spirits are strong with them, we will fight with our hearts to win against them. We should leave our mirrors and pictures behind and reflective items. He sounds to be a favorite of the Raven, they can be tricked, if you are willing to pit yourself against them. The warrior Hill will be very helpful with this."

"And we know they are already watching us," Phil adds, thinking about the soldier's glasses from a few days ago, "So it's only a matter of time before we'll need to confront them anyway."
Re: WW2 Supers d6: SST 11: Mission Six: Anzio, The Worst has Come
New guy Luther ventures to say the old joke, How do you tell a 2nd Lieutenant from an officer? By his silver bar. He rather shyly gathers himself up presents a full salute to First Lieutenant Chisolm and the room. The Pawnee don't much speak about personal feelings, so formal presentation and ceremony is important to them. He's fought with Lt. Chisholm, and proud that the Army gave him the rank that he deserves.
Later, with the SST 11 guys, Luke says, From what the Major said, the Wehrmacht specials have a "blinker" with them. Who can move from once place to another, just by thought and... picturing it. And that Special does that carrying explosives. I can do the same thing, y'all. Cat and mouse, mouse and cat. Who's going to spot each other the first? I think that's what we ought to think about. Spotting them first, and taking them out. But I only know my specialties-- blinking and healing. The rest of y'all can say.

Re: WW2 Supers d6: SST 11: Mission Six: Anzio, The Worst has Come
Night of March 7th, 1944; Just North of Borgo Sabatino a.k.a. 'Gusville', Italy
After a few days of little notable activity other than occasional Artillery duels, the night of March 7th would become seared into the minds of the members of SST 11.....
On the Southern edge of 'Gusville', the members of SST 11 were talking with 'Hizzoner the Mayor of Gusville' himself, Captain Gus Heilman and a few others when some scattered small-arms fire suddenly echoes through the night on the North end of town and a messenger came running up. "Captain....Sir!.....Some Germans have taken up positions in the old barn North of Town and are firing at our perimeter!" Gus wastes little time and turns to one of the men near him, "Dave, take a Section of men from your Platoon and go right up the main road, firing heavy and getting their attention." LT Wilson immediately replies, "Yessir!" and moves out as Heilman turns to Chisholm. "Lieutenant, I'd like for you to take your Team and flank them from the right....I'll gather up the rest of Dave's platoon and do the same from the left". "Yes sir!" was Chisholm's reply and the members of SST 11 quickly gathered their gear and began the flanking maneuver.....
As they did so, the short lived fight came to a quick but memorable climax.....
SST 11 members swung out to the right and moved through the fields, crouching low and watching as the 12 men from Wilson's Section opened up on the captured barnhouse, which seemed to hold something less than a squad of German troops. The Germans didn't seem to be either numerous, fighting particularly had or good marksmen....mostly just a few Rifles firing 'blind' into the night. Then, as the Section got to assault range and rushed in and SST 11 were in position to flank/cut off retreat from the left and Heilman's men were doing the same to the right....everything changed....
At extreme Talent detection range....maybe 250-300 yards or so, numerous strange Talents could be heard/felt by the members of SST 11. First, something very faint could be felt, something very close to the barnhouse but VERY faint....it was DEFINITELY the same Talent power they felt a few days before. Then a new Talent power was heard and the crack of a Scoped Kar 98 rifle was heard and a Forcemen went down instantly from a head shot....
Then yet another Talent Power was felt and a primed grenade just 'appeared' in the middle of the Section and the night was suddenly briefly lit up as it exploded and several Forcemen went down in pieces or clutching painful wounds. The Sniper Rifle Talent flashed again as it cracked and one of the wounded was put out of his misery and a new Talent Power was felt as a full powered FG-42 cut loose and the last few standing members of the Section were dropped. Chisholm called for his team to rush forward as Heilman did the same from the opposite side......but it was too late as the German Ubers vanished and used a couple of Kubelwagons to disappear into the night even as a few of the Captain's troops ran into a minefield they had planted to help cover their retreat....
Back at the 'scene of the crime', 9 out of the 13 man Section (the 12 in the Section plus LT Wilson) were KIA, including the Lieutenant and the others were all badly injured. In addition, two of Heilman's men were KIA and 2 more WIA from the minefield. There WERE 5 Germans at the scene, 3 KIA and the other 2 wounded......but none of them had the 'Ubermen' runes or SS lightning bolts. In fact, they were from a 'penal battalion'; a unit made up of criminals and deserters and the like...which helped explain their terrible marksmanship and lack of intelligent tactics. Of more interest were the small cameras they each had hanging around their necks.....probably how the German 'Observer' Talent was able to use his Talent Power to help spring the ambush.....
Over the next few days, the FSSF was surprised to learn that the German Division facing them across the Canal Front was being pulled out and replaced by an Italian unit. While Italy had formally surrendered in September of last year, the Fascists rallied around Mussolini and declared a new Italian Stated that continued to support the Germans. Some of these fanatics, the equivalent of the Italian SS, were now squaring off against the Forcemen.....
Near Dusk, 15 March, 1944; North of 'Gusville'
As the sun was getting low on the horizon, the drone of aircraft engines and the distinctive sound of flak and falling bombs echoed out over the units all along the Anzio front. B-24 'Liberator' heavy bombers were attacking German positions along the north end of the lines, probably towards 'The Factory' (the Italian town of Aprilia, an Axis stronghold). The members of SST 11 and the 3rd Regiment of the First Special Service Force suddenly heard and saw the distinctive sounds of a Bomber getting hit hard by flak and start to plummet down to earth, not too farm from them.
As the Liberator comes arcing down towards the ground, it eventually slams into the ground just east of the canal; flames and smoke rising into the sky even as somebody nearby calls out '"Parachutes!" and indeed a pair of the silk canopies can be seen, falling gently toward the 'no-man's land' between the Allied and Axis positions....
Colonel Adams, the Regimental Commander moves quickly and sends out a pair of Sections to cover two sectors while turning to LTs Chisholm and O'Riely. "Okay, we need to get those flyboys home before Jerry takes them. Your team has Sector 11....good Hunting!"
Twilight is starting to fall as the men of SST 11 move out. They start to approach a cluster of barns and houses, most ruined by artillery fire near a cross roads which certainly looks like the spot the 'chutes came down.....

Near Dusk, 15 March, 1944; Cluster of small buildings near a crossroads, North of 'Gusville', Italy
The 8 members of SST 11 approached the cluster of farm houses near the cross roads where they had seen two 'chutes from the stricken bomber touch down carefully as the day ended and the night dawned....
1st LT Chisholm was in the center of the group, moving carefully in a crouch along the side of the road, the rest of his team arrayed in two groups of 3, one consisting of Luther 'Luke' Goodfox, Mark 'Mike' Battaglia and Koda to his left and the other consisting of Phil Heuron, Colin O'Riley and Tom Nado to his right and SSGT 'Dust Devil' Hill was bringing up the rear behind him....
Nahum could see the mostly intact farmhouse in front of him (Makred B on the map) with a tool shed near it (makred C) and no lights or movement of any kind could be seen coming from either. Just beyond and behind it though, a partially ruined barn could be seen in the dying light and through a large hole in the side, he could just make out the silhouette of a figure moving around inside of it for a moment before it vanished out of sight....
To the left of the road, the trio of Talents moved towards an abandoned one story small building when they all dropped to one knee at the sound of a figure running and firing a Colt .45 automatic and then the sharper and unfamiliar crack of Rifles in response. Koda, with his night vision goggles, looked out and he saw the figure of a U.S. Air Corps member running and then collapsing against the side of the building (Marked number 4 on the map) clutching his leg and firing his .45 pistol at some figures some 50-60 yards in the distance. When the 1st Nations Canadian looked that way, he saw a trio of figures dressed in an unfamiliar Blue Uniform and firing a short carbine back at him. He then remembered a briefing and realized these must be the 'San Marco Marines' of the Italians who were still fighting on the side of the Germans. The building was about 30 yards from his position, which meant the Italians were about 80-90 yards away....

Mark Battaglia and Luther Goodfox dropped to one knee near Koda, pointing their weapons towards the sound of the gunshots and Battaglia asked, "Whatcha see Sarge?"
On the other side of the road, CPL Heuron and SGT Nado hear the gunshots coming from the other side of the road and start to move that way when O'Riley stops them and says, "Hang on a second....we've got movement in that barn ahead....it could be a sniper or it could be one of the Bomber crew...let's go ifnd out"......
Nado and Heuron looked at each other.....O'Riley was TECHNICALLY just an observer but he was also an Officer....

Luke Goodfox drawls in his Oklahoma accent, Three rifles on one pistol. Better not waste no time. He activates his teleportation talent, aiming to travel 100 yard to a position flanking the Italians, around 50 yards away.
