Gyb happily reduces the lamplight, along with his chances of getting an arrow in his chest. As best he can, he moves a little closer, preferring to stay in cover.

Footfalls and guttural growls join the sounds of frogs and running water behind the group, coming from just beyond their light source.

Peering into the area where the gruff voice came from, the clouds overhead part momentarily, revealing the moonlight for the first time, and allowing the group a quick glimpse of who they face in this woods.

When Rida continues forward, the clouds reform to dispel the natural light again. He hears a crossbow bolt suddenly zip past his head to stick into a tree a few feet away.

The voice returns.

"STOP!"

"GNOME!"

"GREY!"

"WHERE?"

Rida returns fire where the crossbow bolt came from. Then he drops his crossbow, grabs his halbred and charges.

"Gnome here!" Bugs calls out and waves an arm, only partially poking his head out from behind the tree.

As Rida does his best to end the conversation, Bugs curses. "Dammit. WAIT!"

Loyn has no intentions of trying to attack, sounds like we may be surrounded. He yells out, “RIDA! YOU FOOL!! We’re on a search and rescue mission!! What in the nine hells are you doing?”

He stays behind his tree and turns to see what is coming from behind.

"See? Gyb said that someone would shoot", Gyb mutters. A moment later, he adds " Grey? What's grey? Nothing here but dark!"

Need an action from Haldric before I can update here.

Haldric sees Rida charge and moves to back him up. "I shoulda stayed with the wine...."

The voice parlaying from the dark wood stops once the battle commences, obviously.

Bugs starts to answer the voice, but his attempt at gaining information is suddenly thwarted by those charging in beyond him.

Gyb remains where he is, trying to figure out what the Grey comment was all about, like the others somehow forgetting who they are actually searching for our here.

With no light to see by, Rida blindly fires into the darkness before dropping his crossbow, equipping his halberd, and charging into the shadows ahead. He is immediately accosted by a number of creatures who were hiding there in the dark, instigating a skirmish in the trees. Unable to see his enemy, their advantage over the unintelligent fighter is devastating, as he is attacked and hit several times for his aggression. 6 dam

Loyn yells out for the others to stop their attacks just as Haldric rushes past to join in the melee. The dwarf spots the shapes of several gnolls beating the snot out of Rida, but in his altered state of mind, Haldric misses his single target completely.

When Loyn turns to see what might be coming up from behind, he spots the heat sources of several figures advancing towards them in the darkness.

The sound of another battle commences from the darkness on the groups left flank, where Keya was earlier, but nothing can be seen in that direction as long as the light from the lantern shines softly.

Though the darkness makes it difficult to be certain, if you were to guess, it seems like you are outnumbered here by at least three to one.

Rida tries to to get himself back out while still fighting and hopefully keeping them off him.

Halbred [1d20]=17 to hit [1d10]=8 s/m damage [2d6]=5 lg damage

So much for relying on a 2 AC to keep him up.

Bugs

"$#!&!" Bugs exclaims as things devolve. He turns and races around to the right flank, yelling while he goes.

"Stop! Stop! Gnome Talk!"

He weaves from tree to tree, hopefully dodging any larger gnolls trying to catch the diminutive gnome.

Haldric looks around worried. "Parlay? Sure! Why not - Parlay!" He tries to help Rida back away from pissing off any more of the numerous creatures...

He shouts these words thru the chaos, still trying to communicate.
“No Fight…Fish Man Missing…Search…No Fight!!!”

Gyb raises his hands and joins the chorus.

"STOP! NO FIGHT! STOP! GNOME! NO FIGHT!"

Rida again attempts to fight these monsters despite their overwhelming numbers and his major disadvantage of being in near total darkness. Unable to use his pole arm in any way besides as a thrusting weapon in this thick vegetation, he is still somehow able to wound one of the gnolls as he backpedals. Seeing that he hasn't stopped his aggression, the remaining gnolls surround him and pounce, easily clubbing the young human into unconsciousness. 5 dam

From the flank where Keya disappeared earlier, a torch is suddenly struck alight. Closing in on the group from that direction are three more gnolls. They have an unconscious Keya hoisted up in their arms while the torch bearer holds a spear to his throat.

This finally seems like enough to adjust the thinking of the remaining members, who decide that being outnumbered in the darkness with two of their members already knocked out might be a bad situation. Bugs, Haldric, Loyn, and Gyb all shout out at the same time, trying to get the gnolls to stop defending themselves so well.

After a short pause, the gnolls speak to one another in their barking tongue, but only Gyb is able to understand their words and intentions. (see private thread) They hold their 2 captives tightly, but don't finish them off straight away like you might think they would. Finally their leader steps forward into the torchlight.

The Gnome makes a big deal about putting away his daggers and keeping his hands visible. "No Kill." Bugs points to the downed Rita and then raps his knuckles on his own head. "He rock."

Bugs then turns to those left standing. "Does anyone speak...whatever these guys are?"
