Law of the Gun OOC
Re: Law of the Gun OOC
Thumper, from what I've read, that seems about right. It seems that bounties for criminals were published in newspapers. But in newsmen's articles, and not as paid advertisements. Newspapers seem to have been incredibly big and important at the time. Like radio in the 1930s, TV in the 50s, and phones now. Reporters and editors made stories and stars out of Wild West criminals and lawmen. Avid readers bought papers and followed along. According to the Time-Life Old West series I love so much, Wild Bill Hickok said to a reporter, "Nah, I didn't gun down 20 men. It was a hundred." Seems that the whole Old West was full of bullsheet, money and opportunists.
But the root of the money is always about cattle. And driving herds of cash on the hoof to the railhead at Dodge City, Kansas.

Ft Clark’s fort town is/was Bracketville, TX. Just outside of town is a movie set built by John Wayne with a complete full-scale brick and mortar rendition of the Alamo and small old west town. JW filmed the Alamo there, and dozens of movies have used that location. Those buildings are still there, though someone told me the area was closed to the public some years back.
I watched a segment of a Chinese-made “martial arts Western” filmed there. The quintessential hero rides in to shoot the gallows rope to save their friend from the mob/corrupt judge. Pretty comical to spend a day watching a western filmed in Chinese. I had to move my car for a scene, ‘cause the bumper was peeking around the corner in the camera view.

That must have been a lot of fun!
Anyone seen the 1950s movie "Winchester '73" with James Stewart? If so, you'll spot that the shooting contest and the current situation in the saloon were snagged from it. Great movie with a great plot. I think I've watched it three times over the years. https://images.app.goo.gl/x2bVycYgDuwo4T3Z6

The movie set sounds fun. The closest I came to the old west was a visit to Tombstone, AZ many years ago. And a less authentic old west entertainment experience at Rawhide! also in AZ.
I’ll have to track down Winchester ‘73. I’ve listened to Stewart in The Six Shooter ( https://www.radioechoes.com/?page=serie ... %20Shooter ), an old time radio show. And of course, Have Gun Will Travel.

Didja know that Jimmy Stewart was a WWII pilot and later a Brig General in the US Air Force Reserve? He was a bonafide combat bomber pilot over NAZI Germany then as a General flew a combat mission over Vietnam to observe. He was the real deal!
Re: Law of the Gun OOC
Wow. Jimmy was pretty cool.
Slight spoiler for Winchester '73. The main character is kind of the rifle. The story revolves around it and t ends up travelling all around the Old West. It's an interesting concept for a story, I thought.

Any northerners with the Linguistics skill have the option of switching one of their languages to Texan. That is. Inland South/Appalachian American American English. It will also work in AK, northern LA, TN and NC. (Just in case your PC ever wants to go there).

"Y'all, I may be from Massachusetts originally and all educated at West Point, but I sure do have a lot of respect for them there regional dialects,” jawed Mister Paladin. “When I'm in Rome, I reckon I'll do like them Romans do."
Re: Law of the Gun OOC
That was pretty convincing. But I think Paladin may have moved his lips and opened his mouth a little too much. To talk like a Texas cowboy, you have to barely move your lips, and keep them almost closed, like you're worried that a fly might fly in. Forget about making and facial expressions, and as for gestures and "talking with your hands"-- absolutely off limits.
By the way, German Andreas being from Fredericksburg is good RP with authenticity. The town is still very German, with a distinct Tex-German dishes. Some people are still bilingual in German and English. Maybe not fully fluent in German, but they can converse about things around the home and the farm-ranch.

Yes, Thumper's correct, Burnet is pronounced "Burnit." As in "Dadburnit!"

Paladin was never a lawyer, in case folks think that. He was a soldier.ateno wrote: ↑Tue Dec 19, 2023 9:02 pm"Your experience as a army officer and a army lawyer should help, I would have to look at law books for precedents, but I think we have a good case with that. The $300 award divided by six ($50), assuming all five PCs and Gideon participate, is less than each taking two weeks of $5/day ($70).jemmus wrote: ↑Sat Dec 30, 2023 3:46 am
That said, gentlemen, do you have a proposal for acting as such security? The wage would be $5 a day, two week's of employment guaranteed. But for a guaranteed wage, you'd need to forsake any claim on the posted reward. You'd have complete freedom to plan your actions, subject to presentation of proposals to ourselves.[/dialog]
