Durgo

"Good ideas everyone...As Behlus says, Here's the plan...Duvall and Yngvar to the northern door area of the map, Durgo in the first door to the west, Brother Symeon, Fydmar and Wrathbone just in front of Duvall and Yngvar and his pet, Gen in the east hallway with all the doors behind Behlus and badger at the front of the hallway to strike at the ghouls too. Everyone should be able to engage the ghouls for the most part while shielding the wizards. If the ghouls are on fire, we'll take fire damage possibly. Brother Symeon perhaps once they get in you can persuade them to go back out and we follow them attacking just one of them at a time."

Unless there is an objection, he says everyone get in place while He and those in forward position of the plan hold the door long enough to get everyone set up.

"Someone say ready when everyone is in place and we'll back away to our spots. Watch my lantern in the north area."

Durgo is shield and sword ready.

Bhelnus

Should Fydmar attempt to lock the door first? And will Rickford use his bow from the North or join you in the West or me in the East? I will douse the benches in oil and create a trail back the group in the North that they can ignite it with a torch using 2 flasks of oil to ensure there is enough oil.

Brother Symeon

Symeon takes his position at the front and stands ready to attempt to Turn Undead.

These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority!

Wrathbone

We must be off our heads! Taking on a ghoul pack. If I fall, take off my head, I don't want to ruse up as a ghoul afterwards.

I will station myself with Duvall. " Yngvarsen, forgive me. But you are no warrior and should not be a target. Take you mastiff and flank them from the side passage. Let them fall upon me if they dare."

With that (and a hope nothing comes from these side rooms!), I will go to the North end. Taking my halberd out to plant at my feet while with throwing axe and hammer in each hand, psyche myself up with a little Moradin' ancestral warcry and pre-battle dance.

"Ka mate, ka mate! ka ora! ka ora!
Ka mate! ka mate! ka ora! ka ora!
Tēnei te tangata pūhuruhuru
Nāna nei i tiki mai whakawhiti te rā
Ā, upane! ka upane!
Ā, upane, ka upane, whiti te rā!

It is death, it is death, it is life, it is life
It is death, it is death, it is life, it is life
Or do I see a hairy man
who brought back the Sun so it can shine on me once more?
Then I will put one foot in front of the other—
One foot, then the other—until the Sun shines on me!"

Wrathbone: throwing axe: [1d20]=8 [1d6]=1 throwing hammer [1d20]=6 [1d4+1]=4+1=5
Wrathbone: Halberd [1d20]=3 damage [1d10]=5

it seems neither Moradin or his ancestors are impressed enough to bless his martial skills however ...

Fydmar
Will attempt to lock the door; Let me try to buy us some time to set up. I like the bench idea. Make it hard to come through while we pepper them with bolts & arrows & oil. Does anyone need an oil to throw? (he'll provide if so) I think 2 will be enough on the benches/floor for the beginning. When ready, he will use the bone, saying, Moridin Soulforger, I beseech thee - send a guardian to protect us from these abominations of unlife" Next, he will to get to his position in the north hall w/his X-bow.

Exploring beyond the Harpy Shaft.

As the alert goes up and characters frantically hold back the Undead horde. Fydmar fights against a losing battle, not able to securely lock the entrance door. As four brace themselves against a stronger foe pounding and grappling the other side, others bring the wooden benches from the side room. Spilling multiple flasks of oil upon the broken furnishings and piling that as a further hazard in the corridor.

Eventually with a surge, the door is breached and the defenders rush to prepared positions. Wrathbone summons ancestral memories, to draw the ghoulish figures towards him. Fydmar casts his python bone token. Others take refuge on the flanks ready to attack when advantages present.

Brother Symeon shelters behind the side door, a prayer on his lips. Genaromes & Yngvar repeat arcane mantras. Durgo, Rickford & Duvall, split one to each side, drawing bows to add suppressive shafts. Bhelnus bears shield and his ancestral hammer, hoping to 'Knock' these opponents to Kingdom Come.

The retched figures enter, pushing aside the door and clambering over the oil drenched barricade. They see Wrathbone and taste blood, sweet and a promise of tenderised blubbery flesh.

At the given moment, Yngvar casts Burning Hands, sending a stream of fiery flames out of the open side door to burn the vanguard of ghoulies. -1hp each

It also ignites the oil into a greater bonfire, Oil damage: [2d6]=7 [1d6]=6 -7hp each.Azer warrior type: [1d4]=3

The dwarves toss weapons and bones. The axe and hammer go wide of their mark. The Python bone lands in the maelstrom of flames and flailing limbs. Another fiery burst erupts and a glowing bronzed dwarven warrior is summoned to stand in the midst of the fight. Short stabbing Assegai spear in one hand, forge-hammer in the other.

The Azer responds to nearby dwarven battle cries with his own rally as several ghouls grapple and burn around him.

Actions everyone please.

Wrathbone

using the halberd attack from before.

Wrathbone: Halberd [1d20]=3 damage [1d10]=5

Trying to strike a ghoul and keep it from exiting the conflagration and keep their focus forwards so the sidemen can have flanking or rear attack advantages.

nicely written Spearmint.

Bhelnus exhorts the Azer Aldrorz thar en droggr!

I dont think Bhelnus gets any bonus "to hit" from a flanking attack and I don't think I am far enough from the ghouls to use my crossbow (I had rolled for that first) so I will attempt to attack using my hammer and shield bash to keep the ghoul in the flames for as long as possible.

Agreed, nice write up and graphics!

First swinging wildly to avoid both the flames and his enemies touch, Bhelnus' hammer misses the mark:

Warhammer To hit: [1d20]=6, Damage: [1d8+1]=7+1=8 vs. s/m, [1d10+1]=1+1=2 vs. L

Trying to unbalance his opponent also does not go well for the dwarf.

Shield Bash To Hit:[1d20]=10

Rickford let thy aim be true and dispatch this ghoulish creature!

as long as you are 5'ft+, you have enough distance. The 'Bhelnus' name should be in the corridor, yiu can take a step backwards too.

Bhelnus would prefer to avoid hand to hand combat as long as possible, so I will switch the attack from melee to range and step back into the corridor to the east with unopened doors. I still do not think I get a "to hit" bonus from my flank attack.

Bhelnus looses a bolt from his crossbow (appropriately the dice gods provide a "miss"). He drops his crossbow and prepares to engage his enemies in hand to hand combat.

Provided Genaromes has a clear view, he releases arcane magic against the closest burning undead creature to accelerate its demise.

Durgo

Durgo positions himself shield and sword to keep the ghouls over the benches cooking. "Hold the line so they fight over the flames." Brother let the first two ghoul fall and then call on our god to hold the others back. Keep trying folks. Steel your nerves and send them back to the bowel from wince they came.

Durgo attempts a shield bash to push the ghoul back. Thankfully the flame hides Durgo's embarrassment from his poor use of his shield.

Hoping he can follow up with an attack swing at the ghoul.

I will move the encounter on somI can update before the weekend when I am away.
The attacks from multiple fronts in the advanced rank of undead ghouls has mixed results. In the blazing corridor many attacks are stifled, Rickford getting managing to pierce the foremost Undead, -4hp.

Durgo beheads the one nearest the side room, -11hp Its fearsome and grotesque skull rolling across the floor. Brutus savages it, grabbing a fleshy cheek and shaking it like a ragdoll toy. Yngvar readies more oil flasks should they be needed.

Brother Symeon stretches out his Morningstar but his swing just hammers into the door frame. Genaromes arrows the other one in the fray, -2hp

Fydmar follows up Rickford's shaft and the magic missile by impaling the creature a third time, -4hp It falls back clutching the two shafts and burning alive. The creature cannot retreat however as it is pressed forward by the crowding ghouls behind. Falling, its misery ended by the bludgeoning hammer of the summoned 'fire-dwarf' kinsman. -5hp

The ghouls keep on surging however and though first blood goes to the group with two creatures slain, the fiery barricade will not keep the remaining horde hemmed in for long. The bravest risk the fire to try and snatch a victim with a paralyzing touch. A trio of ghouls leap into the fray to set about characters despite the tongues of flames burning them severely -6hp each. while another trio slobber and gnash in anticipation of a feast behind them.

The Azer Warrior, gives a war cry, turning to the dwarven allies and gesturing them to come stand alongside in the burning barricade and get into glorious melee with him.

you will get initiative before the ghouls can strike. Make them good attacks as they have a fearsome routine.

next attacks please.

Bhelnus

o’ voth thjold juz l' aldrorz zurran ugog droggr

Bhelnus is inspired by the Azer's call and charges swinging his hammer for the closest ghoul's head:

Warhammer To hit: [1d20]=17, Damage: [1d8+1]=8+1=9 vs. s/m, [1d10+1]=5+1=6 vs. L

Hoping to unbalance his foe and keep it from escaping the flames, he uses his shield to bash the ghoul:

Shield Bash To Hit:[1d20]=14

he is inviting us to join him inside the fire? He is not burning?

I try to remember anything I may have learned or experienced about these cousin warriors.

I will stab out, missing again with my halberd.

Time to feed the flames some more. It don't expect it to hurt that one that seems immune, but it can take out the ghoulies.

Horrified by the sheer number of hostile undead creatures, Genaromes concentrates on his magic and attempts to use it again. Fortunately, he kept enough composure to be able to to cast his arcane missile spell again.

Spell retention [4d6+2]=11+2=13

Magic missile damage [1d4+1]=2+1=3

Durgo

OOC - Is there one that is immune to the fire?

Durgo tries again to shield bash and then attack with his sword. If he sees a ghoul not taking damage from the fire and is able to attack it he does otherwise he hits the nearest ghoul or supports another friend by attack the same one.

He struggles to make contact..."St. Ygg bless us this day."
