doesn't matter on my part

We can move on!
Re: OOC II
So, are we going to sell the two pieces of jewellery from the drake horde for 8 gold crowns? (a crown is worth 300-400 pennies)
This might partially depend on the cost of the armour, I suppose.

Re: OOC II
Not my call. I need to work some armor costs up today and get them posted for you. Could you list out what pieces/type you are looking to price? By type I mean just leather or kurbal (hardened leather). I can give multiple costs for different sizes easy enough so who it is for can be figured out later.
Re: OOC II
From what I remember we were looking for armour for Algrim and Turnip, so I guess prices for both types for those sizes. The various parts to cover a body.
Arngeir was interested in leather leggings and vambraces. Not sure if they can be of either type.
The others maybe able to add more info to the first part.

Re: OOC II
Leggings would be leather only.
Leather can be made for any location, is soft and flexible. Used more for clothing than armor.
Kurbal is hardened and would be used like early plate armor for spot protection. Examples would be helm, back/breast plate (cuirass), greaves (calf height and over knee), vambraces, or rerebraces. Kurbal is usually worn over leather or quilt.
From a rules perspective:
Leather protection is Blunt 2, Edge 4, Point 3, Fire/Frost 3, for cost comparison a Leather Cap (covers skull only) base cost is 16d and weights 0.8 lbs
Kurbal protection is Blunt 4, Edge 4, Point 3, Fire/Frost 3, for cost comparison a Kurbal Half Helm (covers skull only) base cost is 20d and weights 1.0 lbs
From a gamer perspective:
Leather is therefore 0.75 protection points per 1d or 15 protection points per lb.
Kurbal is therefore 0.70 protection points per 1d or 14 protection points per lb.

Re: OOC II
I'm looking for kurbal protection for arms (rerebraces and vambraces?), plus gauntlets if they'll improve on his current ones.
On his legs he has leather leggings, so how about kurbal greaves over the top (to cover as much as possible) and boots?

Re: OOC II
Rerebraces are upper arms. Vambraces are forearms. Gauntlets are leather only. Greaves can be made to cover the top of the foot, front of the calf, and over the knee. Boots would be leather only.
Re: OOC II
So kurbal rerebraces, vambraces and leather gauntlets.
It sounds like foot greaves would be sufficient rather than new boots. So foot, calf and knee kurbal greaves. Although new leather boots might look fancy, so price them up too.
What about protecting the thighs? Are they called tassets?

Re: OOC II
Tassets are not in the rules. i just looked them up and it looks like they are a little later then the time period Harn is meant to represent (1100 for armor). For knights the thighs are usually covered by over lapping layers from leggings (leather), gambeson (quilt), hauberk (mail or scale), and surcoat (leather).
Re: OOC II
On jewelry, the question seems to be "How much do we need the cash vs how much do we need to influence to reach our goals?" Giving the gift of jewelry might help a negotiation in a way that's worth more than the straight cash value. In this case, I'm thinking that the dwarf outpost is an issue that needs to be resolved well. I don't know how things stand with Baron Rythal, though. The drake head should be a win, and maybe the hunt will give us more chances to influence things.
I'm okay either way.

Re: OOC II
Yeah, I guess we need to see what the armour is going to cost and make a decision. It may be that we don't have to sell both, or one and some of the gold coins.
Arngeir doesn't have a huge amount of cash, so we are likely to need to sell something.
Add some kurbal coudes to the list.

OK, so we are really looking at swapping his chain byrnie for a hauberk, which is expensive. Or getting chain leggings.Rex wrote: ↑Sat Aug 19, 2023 4:23 pm Tassets are not in the rules. i just looked them up and it looks like they are a little later then the time period Harn is meant to represent (1100 for armor). Re: OOC II
Reminder that I posted some more info in the Chybisa thread. The hunt will involve both the marshal and the prince. It is common knowledge that the king and his son don't get along. The marshal is the king's son in law and in most peoples view the princes chief rival/competition.
Re: OOC II
What about a leather surcoat? it covers shoulders to bottom of thighs.shaidar wrote: ↑Sat Aug 19, 2023 4:45 pm Yeah, I guess we need to see what the armour is going to cost and make a decision. It may be that we don't have to sell both, or one and some of the gold coins.

Re: OOC II
That's an interesting idea, I'm guessing it might look rather snazzy too. Could it be reinforced with kurbal 'plates' in certain areas?
How does armour stack?
I think I avoided the idea of a surcoat initially because most of the hide would be used for Algrim and Turnip, and there would be a limited amount left.

Re: OOC II
Armor stacks by addition. There are house rules for lessening the total for lots of layers but we are using minimal house rules so simple addition as long as we keep the number of layers reasonable. The standard knight has 3 layers on chest (quilt, mail, and leather), 4 layers on hips/thighs (leather, quilt, mail, leather). A heavy knight adds plate breast/backplates for chest. So I will call it a max of 4 layers to be reasonable.
Re: OOC II
Thanks for the explanation.
Assuming there is enough hide, the simplest answer seems to be surcoat, then kurbal greaves for knee, calf and foot.

Re: OOC II
Now we just need to figure out what Turnip wants.

Re: OOC II
I wasn't overly worried about armor. It's too technical and I'm just here for the RPing.

Re: OOC II
I figured that was the case. I will try and get some more role play up and going soon. Trying to squeeze stuff around getting some errand type stuff done at the moment.
