Aristotelis smiles at Tiv: Normally, yes, far too late, but you’re in luck today – he leans down to offer his hand in assistance to rise – we’re making exceptions.
Tiv accepts the hand up. He walks in silence being led by Aristotelis. He hands over the key fob when asked. He’s’ deep in thought and trying hard to not let his embarrassment show…keeping a stoic Oghman face. Since he came to Blackrock on a trade mission, he’s been trying to unravel the mysteries of the rock. Now, he hardly pays any attention to non-public passages of the station into which he has tried so hard to get electronic glimpses.

He is preoccupied with reflection on the last few moments. How could he have been so stupid as to allow himself to get roped into Raven’s maniacal paranoia? He figured she recognized something he missed…but no…just her asinine ego. She put the whole operation at risk…and he went along with it. Ummimmir did warn them to “play nice with Medusa in the morning”, did he not? Stupid, Freaking Stupid!! Medusa’s an insider…perhaps one of the hidden Theev Lord representatives…at least complicit with the station commanders. They have the best tech in the universe, and they know how to use it. This whole operation is in jeopardy now. How to repair the damage…

Did he make the wrong decision to bring Kar and Raven in on this job? Maybe he should have been patient and waited for Niels and his very experienced Raid Chieftain. No that’s not it…still an Oghman raid warrior. Maybe, as Lady Vigdis has demonstrated, Raiders just aren’t cut out for operations involving interactions with outsiders. Keep them out of sight until real leaders decide violence is required. Heretical…yes. Effective…yes. But Jarl Hallsteinn chose her…and Vigdis probably whispered the idea to him…

And he let Raven lead him right into this fiasco. He knew better! Ummimmir and Soraia had to teach him that Oghmite ways are both an advantage and an impediment out in the larger sector. Know when to use your uniqueness effectively. This is the second time on this rock in the past few days he’s had to swallow humble pie.

He snaps out of his reflection upon coming into Medusa’s presence, and he listens to her patiently.
So, it seems I have a lapse in judgement. I think your crew are different to the common run of Oghmen, because of your reputation, and the deals you make with Scarlett Sal and Ummiimir, and yet, this morning, you arrive with a warparty and display unruly and reckless aggression, such as is to be expected of thugs. This is disappointing, because I think you are such a crew as considers situations carefully, and yet all I see is a Gun-shark with a hair trigger.

I think I make a contract with a useful sort of Oghman, but it seems all I have is another weapon, such as Theev has in abundance already. A dangerous weapon, yes, but much like many another.

What is needed here, is a smart weapon, not another jagged blade or scattergun.

She sighs:

However, you show some smarts, eventually, the weapon was shown in private, and drew no blood, so I have no need to advertise a price for such a display of poor etiquette. You understand, if you publicly doubt my good faith, make some show of force such as would suggest you think you can strong-arm my operation, this is bad for my business, and I would have to make an example of any person who does such a thing.

But, as I say, everything is in private, and no harm is done.

Except.

You parade an armed party through the station to a business that people who know things, know I have an interest in. This draws attention of a sort I prefer not to have. Fortunately, they are children, and it is early, so nobody who matters sees them, and so the offense is not taken seriously.

However. This thing you are proposing to do, that I do not know the details of, it is such a thing that is best done without drawing attention. Now, I am compelled to ask, can you finesse this job or will you just kick in the doors and start shooting?

In fact, I do not care so much whichever way, as long the thing is done, but perhaps I can save you money.

She gestures to some sealed medical transport modules:

The prescription medicines and their dispensers are here, and delivery is arranged, but perhaps I will honour my previous arrangement regarding the Dust Spice. If you are merely a weapon, you have no need for the subtlety of the culinary arts, and so I keep my word to Uisuikaa and you keep your credits.

What do you say?
Tiv momentarily holds both hands up with open palms at shoulder height as he looks her in the eye. He drops them after the first statement:
You are right, Medusa. Bringing the warband brought undue attention to our exchange. And I am embarrassed to admit, the altercation put our whole operation, your business, and a hoped-for alliance between us at risk. Aristotelis’ preparations subdued the situation admirably. That they were needed…I am deeply sorry.

As to your concerns for my, our, discretion in the, er, operation? The entire plan depends heavily on discretion, secrecy, and what can show on digital recordings. Even Raven recognizes that. It can’t succeed any other way. Hence our deal. You would be well within your rights to keep Raven’s retainer and back away from the Dust Spice deal given our bad faith showing a few minutes ago.

It is a hard thing to take Oghma out of Oghmen. Some of us within Clan Aesgir aim to branch out into the wider expanse of the sector. Turn from the old ways. That distinguishes us… Makes us heretics amongst our own. It also requires us to learn new ways. Please understand, there is a learning curve to these things. But please also know this: Lord Hallsteinn entrusted his flagship to Skippare Kar Tolen and Raid Leader Raven Sorrow precisely because, while we may have growing pains, they (we) have demonstrated an ability to learn different ways...follow non-traditional paths for us. You may have seen some of that yourself; and, as you say, you have heard of it from others. I like to think missteps such as this can be learning opportunities. Our friends from outside our traditional sphere may aid our progress, if they can forgive and show us patience. You have shown some of that willingness already. Our honor dictates that we always remember our allies.

With a little patience, we can become laser-scalpels instead of jagged blades…

Given the proclivity of Aslans for Dust Spice, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Pouncer has a supply on board. It is yours, if it’s there, for half price. Then you may meet both customers’ demand and still profit from both. I’ll also propose that you get free samples of any other Aslan formularies aboard for your research and reverse engineering.

Perhaps there is a way we can salvage the public image of the warband showing up on Aristotelis’ doorstep. We did an Oghman thing…send us home to the Serpent in an Oghman way. Have you any medications that resolve hangovers in the dispensary? Any “party” formulations? Perhaps it is too much to ask that you brew ale? Perhaps we buy crates of each and make a public showing of that on the walk back. What could look more Oghman? We hide our folly in plain sight. Our bad behavior behind closed doors remains known by a closed few. I can have Kar wire the purchase price to you now.

Your thoughts?

I'd normally call for a Computer roll, but Sigbjørn doesn't seem to have that skill. Astrogation will serve (but I'm increasing the difficulty of the task to reflect the off-label use - there's "missing" data).

Sigbjørn looks through the Serpent’s NavLog, starting from his last contact with the ship. Mostly it is the usual record of Jumps between Marduk, Borite and Oghma, with some diversions to the Gas Giants, and Blackrock.

Occasionally there are gaps in the data, where the ship makes a series of Jumps with missing coordinates. Typically these gaps are followed by data in systems like Thebus, Noricum, Torpol, and beyond, before another gap returns the ship to Oghma.

The missing data may be hidden, or encrypted, in the Serpent’s memory, or it might have been deleted. It is also possible the Jump solution was provided by a networked Fleet Jump, leaving no trace.

Sigbjørn either needs a compter Tech, or a lot more time, to solve the problem.

Medusa smiles at Tiv:

Aha, there it is, the thinking Oghman. And a of the masculine gender, too. Truly, we are in times of change.

It is not a bad scheme you come up with. We do not sell recreationals through that outlet, of course, but a pallet of rehydration salts and analgesics, this is a plausible story.

She considers the crates:

These are labelled as breathing apparatus consumables and livestock sedatives.

I can pad some new crates with inert powders, put a layer of actives on top, the dust goes in the middle. The cost is negligible, and I will put it against taxes - her smile broadens briefly, enjoying her joke - Your band of baby brigands walk it back, in plain sight. It is probable that, with the eagerness of youth, they might open a case and mix a restorative draught as they go, I should think.

Well, then, you are a smart Oghman, you are in company with smart Oghmites, and your people are spoken well of. Even your Gunshark. A friend of mine – and hers - vouched for her, and at the right time.

She becomes confidential

Those preparations you speak of, they are mine, not Tele’s. I do not usually choose such a temporary method of putting wild dogs to sleep. I do not get the name I have because of the second chances I offer. If anyone hears I give a pass to someone who comes heavy at a friend of mine, this is bad for my business, because some citizens might think I go soft, and chance their luck. I would have to do something very dramatic then, both to those poor gamblers, and the person who gives them the idea.

Returning to her normal, brisk, tone:

You have my credits, I have your prescription, we have a deal.

And this thing that did not happen at Tele’s shop, there are no pictures of, which proves it did not happen.

She looks at Arestotelis, who nods, and taps away at a tablet, setting robot workers in motion.

Medusa becomes amiable:

One thing your Raven proved, at least, is that Oghmites are a match for Aslan in aggression.

You make a generous offer, but I do not think you find Dust Spice on this Empire ship, because few trade with them, and expensive product like that is not common there. Perhaps there is synthetic, but this is not something I bother with.

In return, I give you some recipes. Aslan preparations that use Dust Spice. These are such that you can increase the dose without it being obvious. I am told your Steward is a Drinaxian courtesan, she will have the art of it.

At this, Tiv looks visibly relieved! He patiently continues to listen.

Tiv smiles and extends his hand to shake as a symbol of sealing the deal.

Some change is by choice..some born of necessity!

I do not know of anything that happened in Aristotelis’ shop. We may not speak of things that never transpired, huh?

I am very certain the warband will be happy to lug the cargo back to our hangar.

Thank you for the recipes. I’m sure they will be quite delicious! But if this goes the way I plan, there will be no match. The game will be over as it is only beginning! The opponent must be severely outmatched from the start. Speaking of which, If I remember correctly, an order of ammunition and grenades were ordered. I presume they are packed away in these crates as well?

And thank you for your patience of things that never occurred. By the end of this, a number of mutual problems will be solved. I appreciate your faith and trust…as undeserved as it sometimes may seem.

Shall I make the payment?

Medusa offers a gloved hand for Tiv to shake. The leather is thin, and warm to the touch.

This is a token that we are not on the outs, and may do business. As to the details of that business, we shall see how things go.

When he asks about ammunition and grenades, she gives him a quizzical look:

As I say, livestock sedatives, and breathing apparatus consumables. Quite a common purchase among dealers in the personnel solutions market here, although these are more in the nature of veterinary supplies.

These are ready to go, and I have a delivery robot assigned.

She glances at Aristotelis, and he steps in to take Tiv’s cash.

Normally Tele would transact business like this at a store-front, but I thought a private conversation might be pleasant. So that I could speak on behalf of a friend of mine, who cannot be present for reasons of discretion. - she pauses briefly - I regret it is a one-to-one conversation, things would have easier if the principals were present. It is no disrespect to you to observe that you are not directly in command of the ship called Serpent, or the Oghmen on it. However, you are a person of some account in your own right, and you will be listened to when you relate the things I say here, so I will lay out the proposition.

This party, who I will not name, wishes success to your enterprise, and offers you a deal.

If you come across certain commodities in the course of your business, they will pay well for them.

As to the deal, I will speak plainly, so there is no mistake. My friend will buy the VIP, alive, for a very good price, permanently disappeared, a somewhat smaller sum. A good price for her retinue alive, a fair price for irretrievably lost. Finally, a generous offer for a copy of any data on the ship. The price offered is in excess of market value, as stock. Nothing at all if any of the items are in the wind. It is a package deal.

These commodities are only valuable if the trade in them is secret, because when certain parties know such things are on the market, the wrong sort of attention is paid, and the value collapses.

Here I speak for myself, as well as my associate. Dead, this party is worth less than nothing, because in fact they will bring more trouble than they are worth. In fact, none of this crew must turn up iced. Missing, this is a mystery, and while questions are asked, nobody is accountable. Found deceased, this is a circumstance where questions become inquiries, and accusations are made. This is bad for business, and altogether a most undesirable thing. The good citizens who operate this facility, and their partners, rely on its reputation for safety. So, if there is wastage, hygienic eradication is the watchword. I have an interest in a business that specialises in bio-waste cleaning, disposal and recycling, if you think you need such a service.

As a gesture of goodwill, the client has arranged to make a secure, high capacity data link available. This is self-interest, of course, because the information they want requires it, but, nonetheless, it is not nothing that they offer you. This data link is not their own, it is the opportunity to perform a temporary re-routing of the Blackrock system. This is a delicate matter, though, and it both assists and relies on your doing business invisibly. To protect my friend, you will perform the re-routing. This way, if you turn out to be merely Oghman, only Oghmen are involved.

I understand you are not in a position to make decisions for Captain Tollerson and his extremely protective fellow commander, so I leave you make them the offer. If they like the sound of it, we will come to terms, but you can tell them that, depending on how carefully they harvest this crop, they might earn a nice six figure bonus. If the deal is not to their taste, don’t bother replying, but if there is good news, Ashes can contact me. Tell your Gunshark she is lucky such a person speaks up for her.

A door opens in the glass wall, and to the sound of powerful extractor fans working, a robot cargo cart exits, bearing a pallet of white boxes (not the hard-shell modules already packed).

Your restoratives. Tele will take you back to the shop with them, and your eager youth can carry them home them from there. The dust is bottom middle, in the package with the Trokh text.

She considers briefly:

I had planned to use standard delivery of these cases, but your fabulation will be more persuasive with more to carry. Oghma is known to disdain robots in favour of, as the Tyrians say, “guest workers”.

She looks at Aristotelis, then back to Tiv: You have comms, of a sort. Enough to send text. Call your people to collect your cargo.

Aristotelis taps away again, and another package delivery cart arrives, with a loading robot in company. In short order the modules are loaded, and the two carts stand ready.

I hope to hear from you later, but even if I do not, good luck to you, Mr Thingvallir, in whatever your crew do next. It has been not uninteresting doing business with you.

Aristotelis leads Tiv and the carts back through the cargo bay and the tunnels, into the storeroom of the pharmacy, where another loading robot is waiting to unload the carts.

(Either the war-band arrives or Aristotelis summons another pair of carts. Whichever, Tiv and the cargo are back at the Serpent.)

EDITED in several small ways.

And several times...

Serially.

Almost to a fault, actually.

On the return to the Serpent Raven calls an officers meeting for Tiv to relay what he has learned from his encounter with Medusa. She asks "Did you get what we need to take the ship? If not we should discuss doing the job without, whether the job is still viable given that we might be betrayed - because I now don't trust Medusa at all or if we should just seek better and simpler prospects elsewhere".

She smiles coldly at Tiv "At least I was able to prime your negotiating position".

OOC, Tiv seeks clarification of the high capacity data link. Is it his to reroute before or after the fight? What is the nature of the link? Is it for the purpose of copying ship data?

Tiv accepts the terms Medusa offers, then follows Aristotelis back. Meeting back up with Raven and her band, he retrieves his weapons and says nothing as he walks back to the Serpent. He then sidles up close to Raven and says in a low voice for only the two of them to hear among the din of the warnand: You were within a hair’s-breadth of ruining the mission. How can a rabid dog be counted on by our Jarl to make friends and allies when she’s so paranoid? Learn to bridle your passions Raid Leader, or you won’t last long outside the hunting grounds. This is a different environ. Adapt or die…nuances matter. But the nature of this episode need not be known by the rest of the crew, or anyone who wasn’t present. Edited[/

Back on the ship, he breaks open the crates of tranq munitions and asks Raven to assign a warrior to take inventory, and he asks Kar to assign Regina to validate the tranquilizer and testing 1 random sample of each munition. Someone around here has an atmosphere tester..and Regina can run it. Take another sampling to Remington for chemical analysis, if the first tests prove inconclusive. Report results to the Bridge immediately. The box containing the spice he carries to Remington and asks him to validate the composition of the Dust Spice. Following that, he moves to the Bridge for the officers call, and asks Remington to join them when he validates a random sampling of the tranq and spice.
Tiv stops and looks at Raven for a moment considering his words before responding: Yes, in a way. You did…because Medusa is deeply committed to eradicating the Empiracle threat. So it did help in a roundabout way. EDITED

He turns his eyes toward Ashilder. It seems Ashilder brings a great deal of diplomatic expertise to the expedition. Her timely intervention ended the altercation and permitted us to succeed.

Turning to the room full of officers, Diplomacy got me everything we need. Remington is validating the chemistry of the Dust Spice and Regina the tranquilizers. They will bring word soon. Empirical evidence, not paranoia, shall validate whether the mission is still a go, or whether we should abort.

If we are a go, we will receive a bounty on all Aslan. Captured Aslan are much more valuable to Medusa and her customer than carcasses. They particularly want Her Words…alive. Big bonuses are available for her and her captured retinue. This should be a kill as necessary, capture whenever possible…prioritizing securing the Pouncer above all else. We are live hunters after all, are we not?

We have been warned by the station that there must remain no trace of Aslan carcasses. We must therefore carry bodies with us on the Pouncer or the Serpent for future disposal when we leave, or we must pay Medusa to dispose of the bodies. All is to be done in utmost secrecy and with uncharacteristic discretion.

Let us hear from Remington, then decide? While we wait, what is the pattern of behavior observed by the Empire while I was gone?

He is unable to find any astrogation records for the missing periods. The Jump coordinates and location data appear to have either never been recorded or purposely removed.

Leon's cross-references the Nav-Log gaps Sigbjørn found with other databases in the ship’s memory.

There are fuel and power consumption data indicating Jumps and refuelling (with refined LHyd) in the lacunas, and life-support system records indicate the ship remained sealed and fully occupied. Gunnery logs show no activity.

The conclusion Leon and Sigbjørn come to is that the data required to recreate the missing Jumps has been deliberately erased, since even a one-time “Jump Tape”, or networked Fleet Jump, would leave some traces in the avionics system. It is unclear whether this was done by the Astrogator, or by some automatic routine within the operating system.

Raven locks her dark eyes on Tiv and replies with cold certainty “A hair's breadth you think? I've snatched victory from narrower margins! You wonder why the Jarl set me to diplomacy when I have no skill in it? So did I! So, why did he send a raider?” She gives Tiv a chillingly feral smile “Because a raider will not fail! Because the Jarl knows that where a negotiator would compromise I will ruthlessly complete the mission”.

Her smile broadens into a wild challenging grin “How are your old heretical knees? Hopefully with the start I gave you with Medusa you only had to bend a little and not overly debase yourself? She can dress it up all she likes but it is not diplomats but Oghman raiders she needs as allies - because diplomats can't handle Aslan for her”.

If not we should discuss doing the job without, whether the job is still viable given that we might be betrayed - because I now don't trust Medusa at all or if we should just seek better and simpler prospects elsewhere". She smiles coldly at Tiv "At least I was able to prime your negotiating position".
Tiv stops and looks at Raven for a moment considering his words before responding: Yes, in a way. You did…only because Medusa is deeply committed to eradicating the Empiracle threat. So it did help in a roundabout way.

He turns his eyes toward Ashilder. It seems Ashilder brings a great deal of diplomatic expertise to the expedition. Her timely intervention ended the altercation and permitted us to succeed.
To the assembled ship's officers Raven responds “The Lords of Theev are powerful indeed. It is said they have no interest in courting weak allies and will indeed make new subjects where they may. You were able to be diplomatic from a position of strength for we are the Heirs of the Dragon and no one's vassals!"

She switches an appreciative gaze to Áshildr "Nevertheless I will declare how fortunate we are to have Áshildr to aid us. We are all no doubt grateful for the Jarl's wisdom in bringing her aboard”.

“Since we are taking stock then our diplomatic mission on Blackrock must rate as a success. The Clan now has business connections with the Lords of Theev and good contacts with the Tyrians. I have made a pact with Scarlet Sal which may yet benefit the Clan and The Serpent both”.

“We can now focus on more traditional business and must remember that this involves no negotiation or diplomacy. Medusa offers a bounty on prisoners. Let us take it if we may but the value is a mere fraction of that of the ship we plan to cut out from Blackrock's hanger. This must be our focus with prisoners forming a valid but necessarily secondary objective”.

Raven will direct the warband's armourer Dagný to assist with the validation of the non lethal rounds.

(OOC: Minor edits for (hopefully) sense/clarity).

Is the Raid Leader going to come back soon? We have a lot to discuss.

Privately, as Tiv and Raven stroll back to the Serpent:
Her smile broadens into a wild challenging grin “How are your old heretical knees? Hopefully with the start I gave you with Medusa you only had to bend a little and not overly debase yourself? She can dress it up all she likes but it is not diplomats but Oghman raiders she needs as allies - because diplomats can't handle Aslan for her”.

Tiv noticeably rolls his eyes again… And yet, one of us was locked outside while there was still a deal to close. I have no problem doing what is required to further the clan’s interest. The door was closed to you, for you needlessly slammed it by overreacting to gross misreading of the situation.
“You think we should not talk of the meeting? That they tested us and that we met their gaze and did not blink? I can see that her man "Arsgat" would not want it known that he refused my challenge - the gutless turd. If it helps Medusa then I'll have Áshildr tell her that I will not put it about that the níðingr soiled his breeks at the thought of looking at me over Battle Hag's blade”.
I only suggest that so as not to diminish your value before your warband and the other officers. I have not given up on this crew yet…despite the poor performance back there. Should you wish to discuss details of what transpired, I have no misgivings…though I will have a weakened Raid Leader on my hand. Still, this job should get done with this crew. Your choice…

There was no test. You and I both know that they decided, and committed, to rid themselves of the Aslan through us long before you strolled in this morning. Yet, you will never admit as such. At best you validated their hopes a little. Don't worry, I will ensure to lift you in the esteem of the others when we meet…unless you want to reveal the truth. Again…your choice…

To Tiv
Diplomacy got me everything we need.

I don't want to be rude, and partially you had explained to me but... What are you wolves up to?
The conclusion Leon and Sigbjørn come to is that the data required to recreate the missing Jumps has been deliberately erased, since even a one-time “Jump Tape”, or networked Fleet Jump, would leave some traces in the avionics system. It is unclear whether this was done by the Astrogator, or by some automatic routine within the operating system.
Sigbjørn logs off for now, but he seems to think about it for a while.
Since we are taking stock then our diplomatic mission on Blackrock must rate as a success. The Clan now has business connections with the Lords of Theev and good contacts with the Tyrians. I have made a pact with Scarlet Sal which may yet benefit the Clan and The Serpent both”.
what are lords of theev, tyrians and the scarlet sal? Seems like a book's title lol.
Raven approaches Sigbjørn and Leon and with a respectful nod to the Priest and a comradely greeting to Leon says "I was told you wanted to speak to me? I was making a collection from the port but we were delayed by... diplomacy".
if diplomacy was what you needed, maybe I should join you next time. The tongue of Gods is a nice sword sometimes.

the footrest ahahahhaha
I have spoken to the Serpent, and maybe I will spoke when all of you will be quiet, but I have a question insoluted. How far you wolves have jump in the past? Before you, someone had used the ship?
The stars themselves once lived and died at our command, yet you still dare to oppose our will.
