The young ninja know had they been able to go directly over the mountain, the trip from The Village to the area of the merchant's house would have take around 11 to 12 hours. Detouring to cross the mountain at another point would mean not being able to reach the area this day. They could reach as far as maybe the farms at the edge of the city of Kofu. But then they would have to overnight in the open-- and that is looked upon with deep suspicion in the civilized parts of Nippon. Or they could stay concealed on the slope of the far side of the mountain, rather than descending into the valley. But they know that spending a night in the wilds of a mountainside has it's own risks.

There is also the option of returning to The Village and setting out again by another route to avoid the oni. The nakama were not told that there was any timeframe for completing the mission. The new route could be a detour over the mountain, or taking the River Route instead.

Or, it seems likely that they could reach the Kumo clan's station on the other side of the mountain-- the "woodcutter's hut"-- today. It's a place that every member of the nakama has been shown at some point in their lives. It seems likely that at least one of the four of them would remember the location and be able to find it.

Jinsei, tense and breathing hard from the narrow escape from the oni, relaxed as they reached safety.

"Now I will forever fear for my tender butt," Jinsei joked, hiding his relief and nervousness with humor. This would be a tale to tell his children, if he lived long enough to have any.

Considering the possibilities for their journey, Jinsei said: "Let us push on to the woodcutter's hut for tonight, and tomorrow go to the merchant's house."

Kaida nods her concurrence in silence, keeping her eyes lowered. At least none were injured for my slowness, besides myself.

Is anyone else wounded? I think the subdual damage heals rapidly, otherwise she will attempt to provide magical healing.

FYI for everyone, the Healing Rate is Health/5.That many hit points are regained per day.
There are bonuses and penalties based on what the char did that day. First aid and treatment by a char with Physician skill also help.

Subdual damage heals completely after an hour of reat. Kaida has been traveling, so she heals at her Healing Rate every hour. It's been around 6 hours since she was injured. We can retcon applying a bandage or first aid too. (Section 1095 has the healing rules).

The consensus within the nakama is to go to the Kumo clan's station on the western side of the mountain overlooking the city of Kofu. The wary shinobi hike the side of the mountain, taking a route leading north of the place they encountered the oni. This time they encounter only natural creatures of the forest-- song birds in the branches, a group of deer who shy away, a lizard who does push-ups to declare his territory, a beautiful and lithely-running cock pheasant. The last might be taken as a good omen, because "kiji"** and "beautiful" are the clan's password and response this month. In time they cross the ridgeline of the mountain, and from a clear place have a view of Kofu around two ri* in the distance.
Image

They follow their recollections of the station's location, and are indeed able to find it. It is in a grove of chestnut trees, which may have grown wild here-- or may have not. The ground around is covered with years of layers of the husks that fall away from the nuts. Reaching the hut requires crossing 20 so yards of the things, with audible crunch with each step. (Going from tree branch to tree branch above would also work, for the more nimble human or creature. It's more humble and more ramshackle now than they remember it.

The ground around is covered with years of layers of the husks that fall away from the nuts. Reaching the hut requires crossing 20 so yards of the things, with an audible crunch with each step. (Going from tree branch to tree branch above would also work, for the more nimble and unencumbered human or creature). But the nakama doesn't need to do so, because as they consider doing so, to the right they hear the loud sound of a stick on the forest breaking. The young ninja stop and grow alert. A reassuring voice they know calmly says with embarrassed mirth, It's fine Spring day, isn't it? I saw a proud and perfect kiji. Someone answers, Yes, even a beautiful kiji can enjoy a beautiful day like today. The man stands up from behind a bush and steps forward. It's the Kumo clan man called "Reed," who is the father of one of the nakama's younger classmates. But he is almost unrecognizable in his guise as an almost penniless unwashed woodcutter.

He says, still in that guise, You are welcome to rest in my hut, travelers-san. We can't offer rice, but we have tea and barley. Please come. He bows from the waist and starts crunching over the chestnut husks to the hovel. An equally grubby woman emerges from it and bows. She's the mother of an older classmate who graduated a year ago and hasn't returned to The Village since the Fall, when the war between the samurai Taira and Minamoto clans started. She's called "Erasing Cloth" [as in erasing chalk writing from a slate]. She has quite a fearsome reputation, but the younger generation don't know for what. I'm very sorry about the poor state of our hospitality. But please come inside and rest a while, if you don't mind.

Once inside, Reed shrugs with deep embarrassment, points to the ground, and hold his hands outside his ears and makes a panic face.*** He says to the group. We on the mountain had heard of a group of travelers bravely setting out on a bold journey. We congratulate you for your past and present bravery. And my wife and I wish you the best of luck on your journey. He looks each novice ninja in the eye, nods and smiles an earnest congratulatory smile. Both clan hensu-jutsu agents bow from the waist to the team. Reed stands and says, I'm sorry to be rude, but I have to go and check my snares. If a grouse put her head in one, we'll have roast fowl tonight. He exits the hut, noisily stomping on chestnut husks. But he stops and calls back, in the local dialect of a woodcutter of mountainous Kai province, Dear, I think may have heard a rooster crowing down the mountain to the west, toward Kofu. At sunset. Superstitious people say that if a rooster crows in the dark, that means bad luck. Every cow, tiger, horse, rabbit, monkey, dragon, dog, mouse, boar and snake has to go together or their own way to their homes. How watchful is the Rooster over the brood, even through the night, while the rest of the brood is sleeping? But that's what it does, until the boar becomes the rooster, or the dragon becomes the mouse.... Deliberate munching footsteps can be heard from outside the bare hovel.

Keshi-nuno-san smiles at the first-time visitors to the station and winks. She says, Reed-san has gone to stand guard and circle as a picket. We can speak and act freely, young warriors. We have have tea and a good meal for the young sent-agents. I shot a boar yesterday. But sadly, we cannot risk spreading the smell of it cooking around this mountain. It's salted and hanging high in a tree not so far from here. When you return, you will fetch it and carry it to the village, yes? Otherwise the eagles, ravens, crows, and tengu will eat it.
How did crossing the mountain go? Oh, the oni. It's very old and vicious, and immensely strong. It will eat you, if it can catch you. If it's the same one, it has spells to throw people down to the forest floor. it's very old, mostly stupid, but very wicked. Some day we'll hunt the thing and kill it's body on the mountain. And banish the demon back to hell.

The kettle hanging over the orange embers and the gray ash of the firepit will soon boil for the tea.

To be continued

I'm not sure I'm reading and interpreting this right...
  • Reed is going to be a watchful rooster so we can talk and rest? Or is all the exposition about the animal-signs meant to imply advice for our Nakima?
  • What does "Kaida, you are on the other side, we know" mean? Is she expected to meditate or something? How does it relate to observing the boiling tea (the rest of the paragraph/thought)?

Is there a point of decision or an action here? Or is this just a pause in the narrative and we depart towards Kofu and the mission in the morning?

Thanks for the refresher on healing info. I think we had very little damage and it was all subdual, so even 6 hours of Healing Rate/Hour should be enough for everyone to be recovered? If that's not true for a PC, let us know.

Jinsei was pleased to see the cock pheasant during their mountain travels, choosing to believe it as a good omen.

“konnichiwa, Reed-san, konbanwa,” said Jinsei, bowing. “Thank you for the hospitality.” He accepted the tea and barley.

Jinsei wondered at the significance of the evening crowing cock that Reed mentioned. Did that bad cock omen cancel the good cock omen, essentially cock blocking each other?

Jinsei’s contemplation went further astray as Reed left the barn door open with his animal totem metaphors. “Ah yes!” Jinsei nodded knowingly at such insights, wishing he had listened to aunt Koisa’s animal husbandry lessons more closely as a youth. The humble wisdom of the farmer and all that.

“May your snares bulge with fowl,” Jinsei wished to Reed as he departed.

Speaking with Keshi-nuno-san, Jinsei said: “The mountain crossing was smooth enough, but we encountered that very same oni. It was a fearsome thing, but we managed to escape. I would gladly join a hunt for it, with several dozen other ninja.”

“We would be happy to carry the boar back to the village upon our return,”
Jinsei’s said, in a moment of long-term optimism.

Kaida was the only PC injured in the oni encounter.
Reed is probably reminding the young ninja team of the Rooster’s role. Which is to observe and make the hard decision to call off the mission when success doesn't look likely. In the encounter with the oni, Kaida took the role of the Rooster and called a retreat. Which is OK, in the clan's book. Any member of the nakama can issue an order to everyone or make a suggestion. The Rooster is just stuck with the responsibility of aborting a failing mission, deciding on whether to leave a wounded member behind, trying to execute one, and other things like tha. The role of the Rooster has been mentioned a few times now, so it seems to be a point of emphasis with the Kumo Clan. The Rooster isn't responsible for the mission's success. But he/she is responsible for deciding about proceeding with the mission, or letting it fail to preserve as much of the nakama as possible for future use. And the Kumo Clan does not take failing a mission lightly, and the elders don't just shrug it off.

Sorry, I decided to go another (and hopefully better) direction with how clan members interact with Kaida, who’s kind of the odd woman out. I deleted that text from the post.
Sorry about that.
Keshi-Nuno-san says, You were wise to run from the oni. I don't know what your mission is, but I don't think it was to battle a wild mountain oni. The clan never wastes a resource. And a trained ninja is the most valuable one it has.

Now, follow me and I will show you something.
She takes a burning stick from the fire under the kettle, takes a long bamboo walking stick (that probably doubles as a blowgun) in the other hand, steps out of the hut and observes the outside for a moment. While maintaining her poor peasant woodcutter's wife guise. She leads the group to a spot around 20 yards behind the hovel. It is outside of the circle of crunchy chestnut husks, and beside a dark gray granite boulder covered with spots of green lichen. She gently taps the blowgun on the ground. There is a faint sound of hollow wood beneath the fallen leaves. Erasing Cloth crouches and carefully brushes away the leaves to reveals a shellacked oak trapdoor. It is a yard square. She inspects the oiled, rustproof bronze pull ring and hinges, then smoothly pulls the door open. It opens with hardly a sound, and below it is a pitch-black hole. Keshi-Nuno-san climbs down a light ladder made of a single rung in the middle and half rungs alternating from each side. She lights an oil lamp with the burning stick, and it a small underground room. Erasing Cloth gestures for the ninja to come down.

The room is around two yards wide, two yards high, and 12 yards long. Wooden columns and beams support the planks of a ceiling. There is a wooden plank floor. Great great tree roots have been sawn off and removed to leave remarkably flat and even earthen wall. Light crates, baskets, casks of rice and other items line the two side walls and hang from the columns. The items are cunningly stacked and arranged to the make most efficient use of the space. For example, there is a lightweight box with rope handles, with a smaller box inside it. And the smaller has a smaller one inside it, and it has a smaller box inside it as well. It is labeled with something in katakana. Keshi-nuno-san says, This is the station's storeroom. It has supplies for missions, healing, and basic survival. It is also a place for agents to temporarily shelter or stay concealed. For some reason mukade* really like this place. As do slugs many other kinds of more harmless creatures. It’s not a comfortable place. I suppose that's why some agents jokingly call it "The Hot Springs Resort" or “The Geisha House.” She smiles a mirthful smile.

She indicates a pine board on the wall near the ladder. It has katakana writing in black ink. Beside it is another board, also with katakana, but each word has a marked-out line through it. This is an inventory of what’s in the storeroom. The clan's rule is that any agent can take anything from the storeroom. But he or she must replace it within one month. A separate, unassigned mission to replace an item must be approved by the elders. And that would come from the agent's awarded personal training time. So it is advised to acquire the replacement item during an assigned mission. If doing so would in no way distract one from the objective of the mission, or compromise it if even by the width of a baby’s finger.

She takes the oil lamp and leads the nakama to the little subterranean room’s back wall. She looks into some old, worn-out baskets. Indeed. A big mukade has found a place it very much likes. She carefully moves the baskets aside. A door similar to the trapdoor is on the wall, at floor level. Keshi-Nuno-san again inspects the bronze hardware for its condition, before pulling the door open. She moves the lamp around in a circle to illuminate an earthen tunnel. It’s round, only a yard wide, and soon after the entrance it bends left to avoid a hard tree root. This is the emergency passage. It slopes up toward the forest’s floor for around 32 yards from the hut. There is another door at the end of the tunnel. It stands vertical like this one, like a kitchen door. Beyond it is a little space cleared from the soil between the big roots of an old oak tree and the wall of a great granite rock. It’s a tight space. One task of the maintainers of the station is to keep that space clear.

But nature is always working against that, year-round. It is possible that an agent might find the door difficult or impossible to open, because of fill by mud, debris, or the invasion of plants roots both big and small. And-- I will remind you that a sheltered place such as that tend to be soon found by and inhabited by all kinds of denizens of the wild, great or small. Again, the passage is only to be used in the worst emergency. And never to be spoken of while on this mountain.

You will stay here tonight, while Reed-san and I stay in the hut in our usual roles of impoverished woodcutters. We rarely see anyone on this part of the mountain, but these are long-term hensu-jutsu roles, so we must play them day and night, without relaxing. Now, we will return to the hut and have our tea and barley. And you will have some dried fish for your strength tomorrow-- but you must not mention it or praise it aloud, you must partake as if eating barley porridge. I think I will risk raising the delicious smell of cooking rice in these woods for our honored guests from The Village who have faced the wicked old oni today, and will be on their first mission tomorrow. She opens the bag labeled "Rice," uses a scoop inside to take out three scoops-- then after a moment another one-- and pours them into the smallest box. And quickly takes the nearby brush and inkstone, opens an urn of water, takes a dipper and dribbles water onto the stone. She painstakingly writes three lines onto the pine board with the marked through lines. The ninja motions to the nakama and quickly moves toward the ladder. Oh, yes. You must always take the ladder down behind you. Intruders in heavy o-yoroi armor won't drop into a hole and risk breaking a leg or an ankle.

Remember that many bushi are stupid, and all of them are full of pride. With just a little forethought, they can pretty easily be avoided or erased. And their pride can almost always be used to make them do something unwise.

The ninja and mother of a classmate quickly scales the irregular light ladder and beckons the ninja to silently follow. She reverts to her hensu-jutsu guise and says in the loud voice of a country woman, I'm very sorry, visitors-sama. But a person doesn't see such beautiful bracken growing on a mountainside. And so healthy, and so many. Please go to our shameful hovel and rest while I gather a few for tonight's dinner. She cocks and ear and intently listens.

From far away, Reed's voice resounds across the slope, its trees, gullies and streams-- Mom! I didn't get a kiji [pheasant]! But I got a grouse! A hen! The visitors will have a fine dinner tonight!

A delicious dinner of hot rice and roasted grouse is eaten, everyone maintaining hensu-jutsu roles throughout. Reed-san says, Won’t you stay for the night? The river and the road are just a ri away, but it’s night on the mountain. He shakes his head “no” to the nakama, and Keshi-nuno-san gestures with her head to “The Geisha House.” Someone murmurs something in reply, declining the offer. Yes, we hardly have room for two of us, much less for visitors. Well then, be careful. Come again if you pass this way. Sayonara.

The nakama retire to the storeroom for their night’s sleep. Before an upcoming day of unknown and hardly foreseeable, but nonetheless crucial and likely perilous, events.

"We are honored Keshi-Nuno-san," said Jinsei. He smiled and nodded his head at the tour, admiring the clever workmanship, glad for the concealed cover for the night. Much better than sleeping under the stars.

After Keshi-Nuno left, Jinsei explored the inventory looking to see if there were any healing herbs, unctions, or tinctures. That could be helpful in the dangers ahead.

Jinsei then attempted to read the boards in the storeroom and what Erasing Cloth wrote. He shook his head. "I can't make this out."

Kaida joins Jinsei at the boards, reading the words aloud quietly to the nakadan. There is little about words that a shugenja does not know... words are the center of their practice. She is careful to support Jinsei and not imply any shame.
Kaida - Katakana Script (BCS 19) [1d20]=19

"Minoru and I carry disguises to engage Tanaka Jiro as priests seeking a contract for his oil. He must impress us with his home and treasures to win our business while you, Fuma and Jinsei, prepare to infiltrate with the false teacup..." she trails off, looking over the inventory list with consternation. "Is there anything we wish to bring to bolster our image as clients? Knowing we must return with it or replace it, of course."

Otherwise, she prepares for rest, wishing quietly that she had the comfort of dog-fur under her fingers, missing her companion. She offers to take the last watch, as it is her custom to watch the sunrise as she feels her mother's energy swell within her.

Kaida and Minoru informs the nakama that one board has an inventory of the items stored in the underground room. And that the other is kind a ledger of borrowed items. Erasing Cloth-san has just made an entry for the rice and fish she took, with her name beside it. The entries below are all marked through. Most have a circle drawn beside them-- the symbol in Nippon for "successful" or "alright." Some have an X, which is the symbol for the opposite. These have another person's name written beside the borrower's name. Perhaps this is the name of the agent who returned or replaced the item, instead of the borrower. The members of the nakama imagine situations that could cause a Kumo clan member not to be able to replace an item. The most obvious one being... not able to fulfill one's duty, because of no longer being in this world.

"Colors fade, temples crumble, empires fall, but wise words endure,” said Jinsei to Kaida in a rare moment of philosophical insight about words.

“Yes the plan is as discussed,” commented Jinsei. “It would be wise to observe the house and grounds for a few days to see patterns of guards, visitors and servants.”

Jinsei poked through the inventory and picked out nekote and a bomb.

Remembering that under the house and in the attic could be strategic hiding and observation spots, Jinsei looked at the picks and spikes to see if he could use one to drill a spy hole.

“Is this salve a healing salve? Do we have a lockpick set?” Jinsei pondered aloud to his fellow ninja.

What are the bomb details?

The bomb
This bomb is rather small, around the size of two adult fists held together. From his training, Jinsei guess that it's a Level 1 bomb. It has a long fuse wrapped around it that should burn for a full minute.

Bombs (Uzume-bi): Task Value: 20/Level. Task Turn: 5 days.
Skills: Average Yogen and Gimmickry. Weight: 1 + (.5 per level).
Cost: 100/Level.
The Bomb is a heavy explosive device, requiring a fuse. It is
essentially a heavy pot, stuffed with gunpowder. The Bomb has a
main blast radius of 2 yards. Within this radius, the blast has the
following effects:

-1 D10 of Subdual Damage is done per Level.

-A Bash Attack is delivered, at a value equal to twice the damage.*

-Structure Points are attacked by the Subdual Damage done. If the
Bomb is set by the Ninja specifically to demolish a structure, the
damage roll is multiplied by his Level. Thus a 3rd Level Ninja setting
a 2nd Level Bomb up in order to blow open a heavy door will do
damage to the barrier equal to 3 times the roll on 2D10. Setting such
a demolition charge requires 2D3 Detailed Turns.

The effects of Bomb blasts are reduced by 1 Level per yard once
past the primary radius. For example, a 3rd Level Bomb has a 3rd
Level effect at a range of 0 to 2 yards. At 3 yards, it has a 2nd Level
effect. At 4 yards it has a 1st Level effect. Past 4 yards, the Blast has
no appreciable effect.

Bombs are too heavy to throw accurately or safely. If the Ninja
does choose to throw the Bomb, having lit the fuse, he may only Lob
it and must make a Deftness Saving Throw to prevent it “cracking”
on landing. A Bomb that cracks will lose 1D3 from its Level.

*When such a weapon causes damage to a character, the
damage done is the percent chance that the target will receive a Bash
result. This will drive the character back 1 yard, eliminate his next
Available Action Phase, and require him to make a Strength Saving
Throw to keep his feet under him.

The young shinobi roll out the futon, unfold the blankets, and prepare to for a night's sleep in the "Geisha House." Per their training, they perforce set watches for the sleeping hours. And as Erasing Cloth had advised, they extinguished the oil lamp. The Kumo Clan fear few things, and they are expert arsonists. But they fear accidental dwelling fires as much as an ordinary person of Nippon, all of whom live in wood or wood and paper houses. The ninja lie, sit, or stand in pitch blackness and near absolute silence in the underground chamber, save for the occasional faint, rhythmic, wave-like rustle of mukade centipedes many tiny feet.

After some hours, their is a discrete rap of a wooden staff on the front trapdoor, simultaneously with the sound of throat clearing light morning phlegm. Above and muffled, Reed-san's voice says, Today I'll saw the branches off of that fallen maple tree to the south, toward Kofu. Erasing Cloth's voice answers, The one in the place with the view of Kofu, the river and the road?
Yes, that's the one. I think a kiji pheasant hen has a nest with new spring eggs there. She runs about and stops and examines you when you approach the clearing.
Dear, if you find the nest, please leave the eggs. They're delicious, and we're poor. It's sentimental of me, but kiji chicks are so... cute.

The young shinobi can almost feel that the experienced ninja and hensu-jutsu actor Reed-san is holding back a little laugh at Erasing Cloth's improv line and clue and cue. Alright then, if you insist. Might as well come with me to see the view of Kofu and the travelers you like.

The trapdoor quietly lifts the breadth of two fingers. From the foot of the ladder up, the sleepers see a lateral line of gray sky. It will soon be early dawn.
Still plenty of time to equip items from the storeroom, if you'd like.
Just mentioning these rules so everyone is aware.

1076.4 SPECIAL NINJA ABILITIES
-All Ninja may see in almost-total darkness to a distance of their
Level in yards. As long as some faint illumination is available, they
can use this Ability.
-Ninja add their Level to their Base Wit Saving Throw for purposes
of discovering Hidden Things. Their Saving Throw for this purpose
is therefore equal to the Raw Wit ST + (2 x Level).

Kaida gets a good quality silk pouch and fills it with clinking silver. "If we are priests seeking to ignite the flames of greed in the merchant, it might be good for us to have a pouch of clinking coins. But let us not lose them before our return... though we can fortuitiously rob the merchant of any other coins we discover, yes?"

Ready for dawn, and to continue, I think.

“Is this salve a healing salve? Do we have a lockpick set?” Jinsei pondered aloud to his fellow ninja.
Responses?

In the subterranean darkness that night, Jinsei pondered the ways of his clan... "He also thinks of how to make the result appear to have happened other than through the work of a ninja, naturally, or through the actions of another party."

That morning, he raised the topic: "Our enemy ninja clan the Taira, do they have a symbol or such that we can leave at the house, placing blame on them?"

Sorry, yes, the salve is a healing salve. The Taira are actually a samurai clan. They're enemies of the Takeda clan that govern this province. Below are the Kumo clan's enemy ninja clans. They don't have symbols that Jinsei knows of. The characteristics of each clan are here: https://www.unseenservant.us/forum/view ... 95#p654295 The No Shadow clan are known to be operating in this province (Kai).
Group A
No Shadow (Buii)
Mist (Kiri)
Group B
Moon Behind Clouds (Kumo no Ura Tsuki)
Storm (Arashi)
Moth (Ga)
